  • The Backseat Driver takes a look at the possessiveness drivers have over their driving ability and how we react when the passenger mentions something they see or when they feel uncomfortable with another persons driving. The common reaction is to shut the backseat driver down. This reaction then trains the passenger to not say anything when they have a concern.
In the world of safety, we strive to create open communication on addressing risk. Yet, looking at how we react when our driving ability is challenged, we see there is still work to do. What is interesting is the passenger and driver actually have a lot of commonality and should be wanting to listen to each other.
The video looks at an alternative way of reacting when a passenger corrects someone's driving. That alternative way is to welcome the comment and show the passengers opinion is valued and appreciated. By utilizing this alternative method it increases the outcome of a safe trip while reducing the risk associated with driving.

Great safety message! Thank you, Spencer, for reminding us of the importance of speaking up when we feel our safety is at stake.

Your welcome. I feel this is a great example that highlights the need to adjust how we take criticism.

This is probably mature advice. My wife is anxious and overly controlling, in general. So her backseat driving is part of that. I feel like saying “thank you” to her countless comments just gives in to her control, and not all of her comments are correct. Some distract me. So I feel conflicted on how to handle all of the unsolicited advice.
