I might be looking at purchasing a new car within the next year or so. The new Prius looks really good. Ideally I'm trying to keep it lower priced.
Do you think that it would be worth it to get the Prime over the base Prius? Follow up: is the higher trim (solar panel) worth it over the base trim?
We received our new Prime last month. It's our third Prius but first plug-in. For 16 years we averaged about 4.5 litres per 100km with the regular hybrids and, each one usually ran half the time on battery alone.
The 2024 Prime cost about $6,000 more than the regular car. But, the government rebates almost eliminated that. So far, we've been getting 80km on a charge without using any gas. As the warmer summer temperatures arrive we expect the range to increase slightly.
If one only drives 80km a day the Prime is certainly worth the premium as electricity here is a lot cheaper than fuel. If the battery drains you simply carry on as a hybrid. Albeit a very economical one.
I don't think the solar roof is really worth its cost. Remember, in order to get the solar panel you have to buy the highest trim level, amounting to a lot more cash layout. And, at best, in return you get three "free" charges in a year.
Downside for you: if you do decide to order a new Prius you need to check with your local dealers in regards to delivery time. We waited an astonishing 21 months for ours and we're told when we finally collected it that the wait now is closer to three years !
Great review Drake! I never thought I would say that I liked a Prius but Toyota really has done a great job with this generation. That being said, I still would not buy one lol. Hoping that you are doing great!

Here in Canada, we received a $5,000 rebate when we bought our 24 Prime. That essentially eliminated the extra cost. We have been getting 80km per charge and that costs us around $1.72

I think the Civic’s a great looking car. Not a direct competitor but a hybrid is coming out this year.
