While I know the frustration with the CVT, I think you can have fun without banging through gears and mashing the throttle and brakes. I like these relaxing drives on the back road where I ease in and out of the throttle and just let the car flow with the road and that is no less fun than hustling a light sports car, just different.
Honestly, I really liked the CVT in my ES300h, it made for a very sumptuous and responsive ride, smooth with good torque response. The one big issue with them is the droning engine noise, and I guess Lexus addresses that issue while Toyota doesn't typically.
I have the C-HR with the 184hp engine. The CVT is performing incredibly good on mountain roads. Always at the right gear, very responsive and the torque is always applied to the wheels.
I'm so excited for mine. I waited 4 months with Toyota dealership and it's finally in. I got the light interior which looked even better than the dark in my opinion.
That alarm thing is standard in the US for almost all cars btw. I guess they do it because it is so easy to forget where your car was in massive parking lots in the malls. So you can turn on the alarm to find where your car is.
Looks good but surprised at some of the quality issues. Also, height in the back is surprising seeing as how many will be used as taxis etc and need rear space and boot space. My wife has first gen electric ioniq and it looks the same inside but hers has far more space.
As this car, or any with CVT were not inttended for throtle response, but rather to run the engine at the OPTIMAL RPM for the acceleration you are asking for (for the best MPG) the engine won't feel directily connected... because it isn't. I remember the Powerglide 2 speed automatic from the 50s, and the RPM was a serious compromise most of the time, given that the peak HP is in a very narrow band of RPM. Over the years, they have added more and more gears to both automaic (10 or more) and manual (six or more) to try and keep the RPM at the peak. Even then it spends much of its time at a comproise RPM. The drone you were complaining about is due to the it beiing a long stroke engine. The peak HP happens to be in the drony range. Just be happy it is doing its job of NOT being at a compromise RPM. Anyone that puts fake shift point on a CVT or eCVT should be shot! Especially if there is not an override switch! I have driven an eCVT by choice since 2007, and currently drive a 2017 Prius Prime. I wouldn't buy anything else. I have gone 575 miles on a tnank of gas, and went two 12 month periods without buying gas at all. (25 mile EV range is sufficient for my around town needs.
P.S. The "e" in the eCVT is for electric. No belts, but rather a planetary gearset (or two in some cases), two motors and the engine driving the wheels on various axis of said planetary gearset. MG2 is connected to the differential (yet another, but common to most cars planetary gearset), so spins X times as fast as the fron axle. X being the differential ratio of between 3 and 4 : 1. The ratio of the RPM of MG2 and MG1 controls the RPM of the engine. In the Prius Prime (not the regular Prius), when in EV mode MG1 helps MG2 move the car, so the engine doesn' have to start to help at full throttle. I don't know if this is true on the 2023 (gen V) Prime though. Dr. John Kelly hasn't made a video yet. ;)
I went ahead and changed my 2021 Prius Prime for a 2024 Prius Prime. It's a huge improvement in every aspects... Electric range, power, handling... but my 2021 was more efficient on long highway rides..
Same here. Going from a 2021 Prime to a 2024 Prime. I figured it wouldn’t be as efficient for longer trips, but I’m hoping the trade offs are worth it.

We owned 2nd and 3rd generation Prius sedans in our family. This is a great improvement with a couple of exceptions. The "A" pillar is sloped in such a way to make entrance into the front seat a bit difficult. Very easy to hit your head and a little too close once in the seat. I would have favored a slightly more upright windshield. Dashboard could have been better as well.
Have to admit that is a REALLY good looking design. I really like it. Make a version with more performance and I'd add it to the new car list. 1 1/2 years till new car time....
Hugely informative as always. Some will say that flying a British car journalist all expenses paid to the USA to tell people about a car they can’t buy in their country absolutely pointless and not environmentally friendly. But we know you’re a regular tree planter and you off set your carbon emissions. Keep up the great work!
The Prius may not be available in the UK, but the Corolla is based on the same platform, has the same engine/battery combinations and is built right here in the UK.
Corolla generates a little less HP, about 1/2 second slower on paper and around 10% worse on fuel economy, maybe it's the aerodynamics? Though the Prius might be better looking than the Corolla here - though neither look bad at all.
Toyota decided to not sell it in the UK, Australia and New Zealand... Probably lack of sales in these markets compared to continental Europe and North America...

Toyota have taken a very uncool looking car with lots of great features and made it very attractive they've smashed it wow 😍
Toyota is the goat when it comes to function and practicality. When they make a car look good it’s perfect
@@enolopanr9820 they honestly are and not to mention they actually make reliable cars that last definitely goats 👏
@@enolopanr9820 practicality ? unless you are a manlet, this car is a headache.
Holy cripes is that seriously a production prius?!? It looks great. I used to constantly bag on all rhe old prius designs and motors, but i totally love this one's swoopy design and powerful motor. They musta fired the top designer and got a new person to lead the exterior design. I'd like to shake their hand. Well done.
I like it how when he reviews a BMW or a Mercedes he says '"animal free leather,"' but when it's a Toyota it's '"fake leather."
I have noticed, Matt always has negative view on Japanese cars.
@@Mu5tyLaghmani even tho he buys Japanese cars and tend to be a fanboy for JDM cars... i guess hes trying to stay impartial
@dunhillsupramk3
It is European mentality to be not be pro Japanese cars due to jealousy or whatever reason.

I have a 2015 Jazz hybrid,it does the same and to be honest I like the way it works.

@@phillipbanes5484Shouting its location is a side benefit (or silently flashing its lights).
Looks good but surprised at some of the quality issues. Also, height in the back is surprising seeing as how many will be used as taxis etc and need rear space and boot space. My wife has first gen electric ioniq and it looks the same inside but hers has far more space.
Passengers can just suck it on the headroom. They won't be in the car very long, and I want the high fuel mileage.
Dr. John Kelly hasn't made a video yet. ;)
Toyota really did a fantastic job!
@@User.Joshua they are! In my case at least! Now i can go to and from work on a single charge. The price difference is offset by the gas i dont have to burn! Win - Win!
I've seen them in person & man I never thought in my life I'd find a Toyota Prius more beautiful than most of the German cars out now. I saw it in black on black rims & everything & that car looked pretty aggressive & sporty. Get me secretly wanted to have one. I can't even believe I'm saying that. What odd times to be alive
Dude…I’ve been a car guy my entire life, finally have a few years under my belt at a serious job and needed a car. Went to see about a GR Corolla. Left with a new Prime arriving in 2 weeks. Office has a charger. Weird time to be alive

I will laugh at any man driving this toy. I live a Toyota as a manufacturer. This however is fucking hilarious 🥴
Love the design of the new Prius! Also, in Camry, which I own, there is also that dripping sound in the air-conditioning, but not always.
5:38 there is nothing to "think through": you either put the rear wheels arches inside the backdoor or not. That how you get the windows to roll down completely.
are we gonna ignore the voice crack @ 4:06 ?
XD I just read Ur comment as his voice cracked
It's such a shame that the new Prius won't be sold in the UK, but it will be sold in other countries in Europe. I also just checked in Toyota's website in Ireland that the new Prius is posted there.
Yes we get the top spec Plug in here and it’s well priced (€47k)
It's quite expensive considering it's a Prius
we would have bought this over our full hybrid Renault Captur had it been going to be sold here in the UK.
Not sold in Norway
You’re the only car reviewer I love to watch 😁
I had an S2000 and they are amazing cars!!!
7:36 The materials on the outside are definitely worse than before, I drive a 2009 toyota sedan and the sound from hitting the bumpers and especially the doors closing is so deep and reassuring
The Prius has always lacked extra sound deadening
I own a 2010 Prius and sounds the same, but I also rented a 2017 Prius and it got a lot better in that regard. Seems that this new Prius is taking a step back, probably to increase mpg's
Jesus christ, Matt is a national treasure
i like it when matt forgot boot capacity and said this to put it there later 🤣🤣🤣🤣 bravo for haldling it smooth
It was more about the conversion into liters.
The new Prius is really look good .plus with Toyota reliable and quality nothing will go wrong
It could go wrong if they go for cheap materials again and from Mat mentioning the "tin".. looks very cool though
when i see a prius ,only thing i can relate to is brian from family guy
Loved my s2000. Probably the best car I've ever owned. Sad that I sold it but when you have to roll out of a car it does nothing for the old street cred. Changed it for an xfr and now pull a petrol tanker behind me!
Do you regret selling the s2000?
I’m quite disappointed we won’t get the new Prius in the UK, but it is currently sold in Ireland.
Your Review style is Excellent.

Am guessing reduced weight for fuel efficiency
I've seen a ton of these driving around Japan already. I like the design.
Amazing oldschool CoD hitmark at 7:09 😂😂😂
We owned 2nd and 3rd generation Prius sedans in our family.
The Plug in version offers 220hp.
Hugely informative as always. Some will say that flying a British car journalist all expenses paid to the USA to tell people about a car they can’t buy in their country absolutely pointless and not environmentally friendly. But we know you’re a regular tree planter and you off set your carbon emissions. Keep up the great work!
This looks like a epic car Shame we don’t get it in the uk
The Prius may not be available in the UK, but the Corolla is based on the same platform, has the same engine/battery combinations and is built right here in the UK.
Corolla generates a little less HP, about 1/2 second slower on paper and around 10% worse on fuel economy, maybe it's the aerodynamics? Though the Prius might be better looking than the Corolla here - though neither look bad at all.
don't let that stop you, i'm sure the Toyotas built in the UK is just as reliable as the other countries...

Being the owner of a Toyota Prius, in EV MODE, even if you press the gas to the floor, it will not turn on, compared to the Corolla. I like that. After all, this is a Plug-In hybrid! The PDA system is beautiful!
Rear door handles = no issue. Honda Vezel is a standard taxi in Singapore and has the same door handles. Not a problem. You simply look at the door and it takes like 1 second to work out how to open the door. Then once you have done it once you sort of know.
Yeah but he was pointing out it could be an issue for taxi drivers
Toyota MUST put those solar panels on the bonnet, and also on the other cars, Corolla Cross, Rav4. So cool!
