    Great Video! In my opinion, the 1874 Sharps Rifle is the best looking rifle ever made. Shiloh, or C. Sharps Arms, both make really nice rifles.
    Mine is a C. Sharps and "Tiny" compared to that! 45-70 with a 520 grain bullet. It kicks plenty.
    50-140 looks brutal! Smokeless I think is too much for that cartridge, but black powder will still kick hard with that amount. THERE WE GO! BLACK POWDER! LOVE THAT SMOKE!
    I'm surprised you said the smokeless has less kick. I wouldn't have thought that. The 1886 might be heavier? Running backwards because you are afraid of getting wet....not because of recoil! HA! Hardly!

    Roughly thirty years ago I had the pleasure of owning a double barrel percussion Kodiak rifle in .54 caliber. I never got to hunt anything with it, but I can attest to it having the most brutal recoil of any shoulder fired bullet launcher I've ever pulled the trigger(s) on to date! I had to lean into it to hit anything with it on my old homemade range and it still stood me up straight and sometimes (depending on powder charge and bullet weight) pushed me back a step or so. I can only imagine what you were experiencing firing that big old .50-140! I would love to own one, but age and Uncle Arthur would probably lead to a hospital stay and shoulder surgery if I shot it more than a few times! Take care and keep the great big bore videos coming! Merry Christmas and a Very Happy New Year to you and yours from The Lovely Bride and me!

    If it was me, I would pass on buying that rifle. The difficult extraction, and the off center primer strikes tells me that the barrel is not installed in the frame correctly. The barrel threads must have been machined either off center or crooked into the frame, and so the chamber is not centered, thereby causing the extraction and primer issues. It is too bad such a beautiful rifle is flawed this way.

      @JDWard-Jeepster Год назад +1

      Hard extraction is a known problem with both the .45-120 and the .50-140 they are both very straight walled and the case has a lot of surface drag in that long chamber. Your drag issue is probably the large rim diameter dragging on the groove in the action tail right behind the breech block. If this groove isn't deep enough it will drag. There is no excuse for offset primer strikes, either the lever isn't raising the block high enough or the hole was drilled slightly off center. Either way poor quality. I take it it is an Italian copy and NOT a Shiloh Sharps out of Big Timber Montana.

    I can’t believe how you can handle the recoil if I am not careful not even shooting what I would not consider a hard kicking rifle anymore and being on blood thinners after having a heart attack I get all black and blue last time my hole should and arm down to my elbow was black and blue

    Even though that’s one of my dream rifles, because of the extraction not working and the primer striking off center, I think the barrel might need to be re-bedded, cause something is out of whack. Unless you can get a great deal on it because of barrel issues and you know a good smith or can do it yourself. Great video!

    you deserve a lot more subscribers than what I'm seeing here. you really have some awesome firearms, that I'd never known of until I found this channel. my father gave me my first rifle when I was 8, I'm not exactly a stranger to firearms. would be polite if you introduced yourself sometimes, first name will do. I tend to be a bit formal and feel silly saying the levergun50 guy when I mention the content to my acquaintances. the whoteewho guy the same thing. I did know his name but forgot what it was. since he never introduces himself, I'm not inclined to mention the channel because the name makes me feel silly. weren't you going to sell that rifle or send it back because of that sticky shell issue? I believe I remember you saying something to that effect.

    Except Sharps never made a rifle chambered in .50-140. Or, for that matter, .45-120. Both are 3 1/4" cases. Sharps never chambered anything with a 3 1/4" case. The famous "Big Fifty" was actually a 2.5" case, the longest they ever chambered in .50 caliber. The longest case used in .45 caliber was 2 7/8". There were, however, Sharps rifles rechambered to 3 1/4" in both .45 and .50 caliber some time after the Sharps rifle company went belly up. Pretty much the beginning of "wildcatting", really, which is cool in and of itself. So, while Sharps never made one, early "wildcatters" did, so it's still very "historically correct".
