Nice video. I’ve been shooting and reloading 45-70 for a long time and love it but the only 50 caliber lever action I’ve ever messed with was a friends 50 Alaskan. In single shot rifles I’ve only tried 45-120 never the 50 cal rounds. Awesome video it was very fascinating.
WoW...... what a fantastic shooting range demonstration video. Absolutely love your rifles here. The Sharps is definitely on my bucket list. The closest thing I have to either one of these is a Marlin Trapper 45-70. Thanks for making this great video, and Howdy 👋🤠 from Tom in 🇨🇱 Texas 🇨🇱
It is great to see a video of two of my favorite rifles, although my rifles are both in 45-70. I know there are more expensive, and more powerful rifles out there, but few carry the history and charm that these two beauties carry. Life is good! Thank you!
I wish more utubers would narrate like you do, makes it so much easier for us grey beards than having hearing problems. Do you have any idea what the bore diameters are that might explain the difference in velocity? I wonder if Shiloh would give you a data sheet on the strength of the rifle? If it's equal to a #1 Ruger, yikes. Maybe you can sell those big 50 fired bullets as ash trays or hub caps, I'd buy one to go with my copper plate you sent me. Might not do your shoulder any good. Loved the comparison, thanks?
One of tho most impressive eye opening comparisons you could have done was placing that.22 Long Rifle in the center of that expanded .50 caliber bullet! It is awesome what those big buffalo guns were really capable, but not many people know about this or see it so thanks to you for showing!
I'm from Scotland, we aren't allowed guns like that. What a superb pass time, sitting blasting hell out of ballistic gelatin on a beautiful day. I didn't know what ballistic gelatin was until two days ago. Superb video!
Brother every time you have one or both of them rifles in your video I get absolutely amazed. Be safe out there brother and GOD BLESS you and your family brother Amen 🙏
Did you mention using smokeless powder, in the 50-140 Sharps?? I have both a 50-70 and 45-110 Shiloh Sharps. I've been able to find published smokeless loads for (that work very well) for the 50-70 but nothing published for the 45-110. Any info you could provide would be appreciated. I want to try loads where I don't have to wipe and dry between shots, like I have to do when shooting charcoal.
That ammo seems extremely powerful! I never heard about it before now. Seeing it tear through that gel was so cool! Just imagine how badly it would mess up flesh! Ain't nothing gonna live through that! ☠️
Putting smokeless powder in these classic BP cartridges is defying the purpose of the large cartridge and a comparison is useless. With smokeless the question is not how much powder I can get in the cartridge , it is , how much pressure can the gun take. A modern Sharps can take about 30k CUP ( some maker claim they can go up to 50k) the Winchester can take a bit more ( but also not more than 50k for sure) . If you would use originals both had to drop to about 20k for the Sharps and maybe a bit more for the Winchester but I would not trust the metallurgy of the 100+ year old guns. With BP the whole story why they went for longer and longer cartridges was to get more powder out of the gun. It had limits. A 50-110 out of a short barrel Winchester or sharps would not gain significantly more power. Barrel length has also some impact. And at the extreme length the gains become marginal . But in this case the Sharps would have measurable more power . How effective this added power was is another story . I would say it would only benefit very long distance shooting. So bottom line , I love to see these two guns and calibers in action but doing it with smokeless is simply without merit . It is more a comparison of the system Winchester vs Sharps and the limitation of the pressures they can hold.
Dang...those rifles kill from both ends...how many pounds of recoil do they generate, my 30-06 pump makes about 28 or so pounds, thank you for the video, i enjoyed it.
Wow. When I went to Zimbabwe to hunt Cape Buffalo I used a 550gr Woodleigh Weldcore at 2,170 fps muzzle velocity. Your loads in the 1886 were just a mite more powerful!! Amazing stuff!
Maybe try new ballistic gel block with each shot. Once you have a wound channel, you have damage to the gel which means if there is any overlap, you'll have bullets traveling off centre.
All the comparison loads were smokeless powder, any smoke you seen was the lubrication on the lead bullets, The only black powder loads was at the end of the video just showing shooting it at 200 yards
Love the videos. Been watch for a while now. I have a question and believe you would be the only one to trust. I have brand new never fired 45-110 starline brass. Is there anything I need to do to them before loading and shooting them? I seen something about annealing them first but I would appreciate your opinion before I do anything because for the price of them I really don't want to ruin any of them. Thank you in advance.
I usually just load my Starline brass, they are usually just perfect when you get them from the factory, after I’ve shot them a while I will anneal them just to make sure they don’t get work hardened
Just curious - what are the twist rates of these two rifles? If I was to to guess, the Winchester bullets veering off course might be due to lack of stabilization in the block due to a slower twist??
Both are outstanding and I enjoy shooting both. Personally I prefer the model 71 due to handling ergonomics. I've had those 1886 rifles with cresent steel butt plates and they are unkind to my thick shoulders. The shotgun style butt is more agreeable on my Sharp's and Winchester 71 rifles.
Wow...now that's a spicy MUSHROOM! Anytime you can lay a 22 LR in one...😳 Love them both and very impressive 💥 That is the worst of the best gel shot's I've ever seen 👌
You can buy one like this from buffalo arms, they’re not made by Lyman they’re made by a tool company I can’t remember the name but you can find it over at Buffalo arms I believe they’re in exact copy and they’re really well made
If I come up with a hotter load for the #also do the hottest load for the 1886 again in the meantime here’s the link to the video where we got over 6000 foot pounds of energy this is the hottest load we ever tried ruclips.net/video/JQ6bEK1Lkos/видео.html
What explains the velocity difference? Even if the powder capacity didn’t matter that much, I would still expect them to be even or with the 50-140 at least a little ahead.
Do you know what powder is being used and how much? I have a 50-3 1/4" Sharps Shilo have shot both smokeless and black powder from it and it is a brute as shown in the video.
I've been impressed with 50-110 ever since I read about it. On paper, it functions better using black powder over smokeless loads, which makes sense with the burn rates and heavy projectile, but it's has great knock down power. When you can scoff at a 45-70, that means something. It sits just under a 404 Jeffrey. 500gr@2000ft/sec vs 300gr@2600ft/sec Now, put the 50-140 in an 1886, name it the Quigly repeater, and that will forever end the best firearm of yesteryear. And, boy howdy, don't that 30 extra grains turn out results! 5800ft/lbs is quite a bit over the 4500 or so of the 50-110. What's that, 2.5 shots equals a 50bmg
Respectfully, I appreciate our history of weapons, just how far ahead of the curve that guns was, for its time period. If I shot that same ballistic gel, it would explode with my semi barret .50 cal. The whole thing would be a wound channel, even the ground around it👍🏻
Here’s a video of 50 BMG hitting a clear ballistic block of gelatin, after you watch it let me know how it compares with what you see here. ruclips.net/video/5J9hCDr21mo/видео.html
That was awesome. I think I might have to pass on Both of those. I just might be too small. I only weigh about a buck fifty. They would knock me for a loop.
That is true, but so only a marginal amount of difference, after all, with all the videos I did shooting them into a box of gelatin. You can see it still consistent with the virgin blocks., the overall difference may be slightly different, but the comparison is not really compromised
The .50-110 is more "efficient" than the .50-140? I vaguely remember reading something about better/more complete powder combustion in a shorter powder column depending on what kind of powder and it's burn rate? I don't pretend to know much of anything other than carrying .45 ACP semi-auto pistols as part of my "costume" for half my life and seeing human beings do some rather strange/interesting/funny/disturbing things.
I do love the 1886 Winchester, you couldn’t possibly go wrong with either one, unless you had heard of mastodons running you down then you definitely would want the repeater
I am confused. You said the cartridges were loaded with smokeless powder, but they produce huge clouds. If these are nitro proof versions of both guns, then the smokeless powder giving muzzle energies of 5800 to 6400 ft-lbs are on a par with the .458 Lott and .505 Gibbs. Why wouldn't more hunters want to use them for dangerous game, at least the Browning for quick follow-up shots?
There’s several of you viewers that have built these guns up and taking them to Africa and taking elephants with the 50-110 he did a headshot on one in the Bullet pass completely through. He did a body shot on one that another Hunter shot that was getting away, broke its hind leg, and the Bullet exit out after breaking the other front leg killing it. using a Hydro stabilized Bullet.
@Leverguns50 thanks for the replies. By 'built these guns up' I'm not sure what you mean. Were 50-110 Browning 1886s made nitro proof before they were discontinued? Even if they were, finding one in good enough to shoot would be VERY expensive, no?
If you fire either of those rifles with the curved buttplate snugly in your shoulder, you will regret that decision immediately. The curved buttplate should go high onto the bicep which will give more in recoil, and reduce the pain
Take care when hunting with either of these cartridges, that two of the pursued animals are not aligned with one behind the other. I discovered this personally with a .45-90 Sharps and two mule deer does. Fortunately, my hunting partner was with me. Nuff said.
i'm going to find me a 1886 one of these days. I'm thinkin the 45-70 or 45-90 would be plenty of power. My shoulder is hurtin just from watchin you shoot that 1874.
Sharps never made the 50-140. Some were chambered aftermarket by gunsmiths in that caliber, but in reality the 45-110 was all that was needed for buffalo or grizzly bear.
I’ve heard a lot of people say that sharps never did but then I’ve also had a lot of viewers say that they have documents that sharps did make them, so I have no idea I have read document stating Winchester sold loaded ammo for them as far back as the late 1870s
You're comparing apples and kumquats. You need to compare with both loaded with either black powder or smokeless. Both were BP era cartridges, but can be loaded with smokeless.
Impressive up close, but I think my lever actioned rifle is a wee bit more powerful. It’s a 50cal Martini chambered for the British 577-500No2 black powder express cartridge and I’ve shot it a few times loaded with a 690gr FB lubed cast bullet 30:1 alloy, in front of 140gr of Wano FFg. 😅 had trouble holding onto the gun! Watch here if you doubt me. 😁 ruclips.net/video/iXVDLHkOhec/видео.html
What is the big deal. Anything gets hit by one it really is not going to matter which one. If it walks , crawls , flies. or even even wormholes here from a distance galaxy it's going down when hit.
These beautiful works of art are relatively unknown today, love them, thank you

The Shiloh is a very strong falling block. It can be loaded to 50k no problem, so long as the brass is sound.
The main difference is the sharps I’m keeping it at 28,000 psi and the Winchesters going to 45,000 psi

The Crescent but pad is not good for prone shooting that’s for sure
What powder were you using? It would be fun to compare full loads of ffg.
With black powder I would bet that the sharps would win because of its much greater powder capacity, I was thinking that would be fun too

In the Shiloh sharps we are using a slow burning powder A 4350 and in the Winchester we are using a fairly fast burning rifle powder H335
@@Leverguns50 oh ok. I honestly thought that was black powder with all that smoke haha

Two powerhouses with about the same performance. To much for me lol. I’ll stick with the 30-30, 38-55 and 45-70😆
Power to spare. No critter I know of could stand either
🙏🙏🇺🇸
Thank you
The 50/140 is a dang elephant gun!! And might be a little too much of a good thing!
Earned a sub!
I want one
My Money Is On The 1886 Winchester 50-110 😀❤️😀 My Favorite Perfect Repeater 😀😀😀😀👍🏼
Thank you so much
@@Leverguns50 always Brother 😀😀
Theres a reason why the army went with the sharps
Impressive up close, but I think my lever actioned rifle is a wee bit more powerful. It’s a 50cal Martini chambered for the British 577-500No2 black powder express cartridge and I’ve shot it a few times loaded with a 690gr FB lubed cast bullet 30:1 alloy, in front of 140gr of Wano FFg. 😅 had trouble holding onto the gun! Watch here if you doubt me. 😁 ruclips.net/video/iXVDLHkOhec/видео.html

OK, now let's build a rifle chambered for the 20mm anti-tank round. This is getting ridiculous.
Well, these cartridges came out in the late 1800s back, then they wanted to make sure stuff was dead with the first shot
Several of those rifles exist. Look up anti-material rifle. 😂
What is the big deal. Anything gets hit by one it really is not going to matter which one. If it walks , crawls , flies. or even even wormholes here from a distance galaxy it's going down when hit.
The 50 110 wins again
Yea thank you
Yeah no thanks, I wouldn't want to shoulder either one of those beasts
They really get in there and really massage your shoulder and the ripple of that really worked out the kinks 😂
These videos are making it very hard not to order a 1886
Well you won’t be sorry, I would imagine you’ll really enjoy it
182 👍
Thank you so much
Brother that’s bigger than a 12 gauge slug. Course a rifled slug is holler based to
