Being alone is why I quit my day job. I worked for a small company and, due to several reasons, I was working alone nearly half the time. I decided if I was going to run someone else’s business alone, I may as well just run my own business. Best decision I ever made. No more jobs I don’t want to do, I get to make all the decisions, and I work as much or as little as I want.

As someone that's been working from home the last 6 odd years, my 2c:
    - Stick to a schedule, wake up mornings, do your usual thing (workout, breakfast etc etc), dress like you would for your day job or at least don't stay in PJs.
    - Take breaks, go for walks perhaps to the shops
    - Sign off at 5 or 6pm or whenever, leave the work at the door
    - Go out in the weekends and do something social
    - Focus on yourself first, especially your mental health

      Thank you for the hints!
I do some of the things already, like regular breaks or walks and social interactions on the weekends. Also I reduced drama inducing people in my life :D
I need to get better at a proper schedule, thats still a mess :D

@@StefanGotteswinter I actualy never liked regular schedule.
I am bit specific, "night type", but everyone have it's time, conditions, etc.. when/where he is most productive. If this is from noon up to 8 in the evening... why not work in that time? Cos this is not "common"? Who give a ... for common? This is your life, not common life.
Do a job at the time you are convinient, as long as you want (or must), and when you feel that it's enough... just stop. It does not matter is it 10 in the morning od 5 afternoon. I usualy make a mess when I continue to work after I feel that it is enough :)
You are the master of your job. Do not let your job to master you.

Some very good advice there. I worked from home for 25 years before retirement. I did travel a lot for my employer (a very large very British institution 😁). The points made are disciplines that keep you on track and sane and yes, never go to work in your pj's, not even at home 😂.

You definitely do not sound arrogant. I have a suspicion that most viewers have no clue as to how much work goes into making an average video. Your content is fantastic and your contribution to general and exotic machining knowledge is really appreciated. I have not tried the Patreon route because it feel weird, mostly because I don't have your expertise. You are one of the rare and valuable contributors like Tom Lipton and Robin Renzetti. Thanks for everything you have contributed and I hope you succeed in the coming year. I think there will be financial and mental challenges.

Great tour Stefan. I am always impressed that you get rid of things if they are not useful, even if they are pretty! I guess that’s the difference between a working shop and a hobby shop, where you can keep hold of things for the pleasure of owning them!

I run a prototype shop for an aerospace company and I work totally alone in a building away from the office. I love it. But I’m also struggling with the very high demand on my time and creativity from my job and lack of time for my own projects. Good luck. If Germany is like America, the instant you open a shop and people realize you know what you’re doing, you’ll have more work than you can handle. My friend opened a shop to have something to do in casual retirement and he’s working more than he did before he retired

I always like your sit down thoughts and the shop tours. The fact that you are able to take a 12 month sabatical is wonderful, it gives you the time to try out if something else will work for you, in the knowledge that there will presumably be a job for you at the end of it. To be honest I'm sure any number of companies would be glad to have you if you decide to go back to work again. This channel is the very best advert for your capabilities.

It was a great video, and I certainly picked up a couple of good ideas. Best of luck with going solo, it is a big change, as you know the interaction with fellow humans is one of the toughest things to keep going. If you make the time and don't put off the once a week get together with friends thinking you have to keep working it really helps. Once I started to manage my shop time and my "me" time better and kept them separate I was a much happier person. Took me quite a few years to force myself to do it though, I always had a back log of work. I used to let it be a burden, finally just had to learn to manage my own self expectations and workload scheduling as well as my customers expectations. It took a bit to accept that I was just a mere mortal, and three months of work wasn't all getting done this week... Happy 2023, lets hope it is a bit less weird than the last two years.

Stefan thanks for the shop tour update. Well done! I enjoy your videos. Besides the excellent content but the lack of overt ads and silly, extended, goofball intros so many others use are very welcome!!

Stefan.... Thanks for a fabulous 2022, and one of the best (and LEAST boring) shop tours of the year .
25 sq. m. .... all that gear...... a tall bloke,,,,, and you didn't bump the camera tripod once !!!! Amazing.
I hope you have a good "sabbatical" , a great trip to NZ, and lots more great videos.
    Regards,
    Robert ( Sydney, Australia)

    Hi Stefan,
In addition to wishing you a very happy and prosperous 2023, I take this opportunity to tell you that I really appreciate your channel. Your videos are very informative, and the craftsmanship is a joy to see.
I hope that in this year you will have much pleasure in making the video's yourself, now that you are taking a sabbatical.

The pure quality of your work and productions are much better selling point than any ad. That is not easy to do. If you look at others who do this you can see that it is hard to keep up. So cheers to you we know full well how hard this is. You should do a chat with This Old Tony....your dead pan and his child like humor is a great mix. Cheers!!! oh Happy New Year.

No you dont sound arrogant, i appreciate your content, and the tips you share, and i noticed that taking a sabatical is a huge decision icould see in your expression, because it will be one year without coworkers, and the socialization that comes with it. i felt that way when i was layoff for two months, being used to work for 23 years, all of the sudden i had 2 months to myself, in lockdown, that's when projects started forming in my mind just to have something to share with fellow enthusiasts. I wish i could support you in patreon, in a matter of fact there is no guilt in getting a income from content you created, and having a patreon, im used to make tutorials and i know all the work that comes with it, and i like to share things to help others, so getting a bit of money is all good, i prefer to support a maker that shares his love for what he does, than a shady multimillion company that usually is managed only with profit in mind. no soul on that.

I am almost in tears experiencing this most marvelous work space you have created. I am unable to maintain a well defined area for my hobby. I'll be insisting on one when next we move. In the meantime, thank you for showing us what is possible!
