I normally use the smallest size of the trans-clear Goody' s Hair Bands, which are cheap and sold at WalMart. They are not the best in terms of longevity but the low price makes up for that. For "official" traction tires, I recommend Calumet.
I would agree with Rob, the Calumet traction tires are your best bet to do the Tyco diesels. I have a pack of the Hair bands as well, but haven’t installed them yet. I want to try them on one of my Tyco steam engines.
There are a lot of people in model trains who put Tyco trains down saying they are more like toys, in a sense they are. But they are fun. A good introduction to the model railroad hobby. I feel Tyco is still a good way to start off. I have a good size collection of Tyco trains. I'm getting back into H.O. trains after a 30 year absence. Tyco trains aren't perfect, just fun to run again. Tyco is a nostalgic time for me.
They were not as bad as people said…got a lot of us into model railroading. Back then kids ran them full speed, slammed them forward and reverse, set the track up on carpet, and never lubricated the motors. I’ve gotten plenty dead for years ones running like new. With basic care and maintenance, they run fine. Even better as they are cheap to acquire and kitbash/detail/custom paint into nice operating models.
their play value is OK, but they are not models, they are toys. I use them for "bashing" projects. for $1, you could get the tyco "wood" reefer and build up an excellent PFE car of the 40s and 50s. they take paint easily and decals are readily available. kadee trucks and couplers fit perfectly.
My Penn-Central Mantua F7 is still a good runner. It was acquired in the mid 70s as a Christmas gift. And I ran the piss out of it. Thank you for sharing your unboxing and good luck restoring these classic gems from the retro DC realm of used to be. :-)
Cool old collection. The MU2 motor is indeed indestructible….a simple but excellent design. Those little holes on the bottoms of the trucks are lubricant points. Just a bit of labelle 108 oil and wheel cleaning and it will fly! I’d use that drive on your G,M&O shell.
Out of all the the engines I was surprised the CHATTANOOGA steam engine ran! Some smoke in tac! When all are repaired they're going to be good runners.🙂
That Chattanooga still has the cab and boiler cap, that’s rare since most were used by kids. Also sounds like there’s no cracked nylon gears in the Bachman thats also rare
Finding a truck and parts for Tyco is still possible, with that being said this video proves that only idiots are selling things online lol. Bachman is still in business so parts are available.
So what are you use for Traction tires I've asked this question lots of times. Lots of people never really get a good answer

Nice unboxing. 😊 The Post Office shows no mercy. LOL
Hope to see how you fix/restore them in up coming videos.🚂
Great little haul, the steam engine looks most likely to run with little repair.👍

Yes, I've made countless videos of my "Retro Tyco" layout, all of which are under the "Retro Tyco II" playlist on my channel.
