I always love boxes like these you can find things inside that you wouldn't buy for your layout but when you find it you just want to incorporate it into your layout!
1) The Bachman CN unit is a GM Diesel Division GP40 2) All the cabeese are Santa Fe prototype 3) The little shanty could be for (among other things) a switch tender in a yard or for the operator of manually operated crossing gates - operated either by a series of rods and gears to elevate and depress the arms with a lever inside the shanty (along with a chair , maybe a phone on the dispatcher's circuit and a pot belly stove (don't forget the wood or coal pile next to the shanty) and things like oil lamps - both to see and mount on the gate arms at night with cans of oil for them, tools to work on the gates and an oiler to lubricate the bearings on the gates. Don''t forget the railroad or girly calendar and maybe some curtains made by the wife) or a crank handle that inserted into a hole in one of the gate bases and and cranks the gates up and down. In the old days or on a branch, the crossing guard could just have a red flag and a red lantern to manually control traffic and no gates at all. Many of these crossing guards were men who had been injured working for the railroad and were given an easy job as a sort of pension. Here in New Jersey, we had many railroaders of Italian descent and the soil is fertile, so some towermen and crossing guards planted gardens alongside their work place. Tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers were popular and after being harvested the wife would often can them and the husband give out some jars as gifts to his buddies at work. Sometimes it went to the length of making marinara sauce and canning that. 4) The passenger overpass brings back memories. My home town of Fanwood NJ had one with a roof over the 4 track main line of the Jersey Central just to the east of the stations on each side of the track. Today the CNJ is Jersey Transit and 2 tracks and the overpass has been replaced by a modern one designed to look like the old one imgur.com/po2id5h
5:15 that's an Athearn flat car meant for a small airplane with detachable wings! I have two of those (including that same Nickel Plate Road car) and they're a neat sight on a layout when paired-up with other flat car loads like Athearn's tractor and boats.
It really is true you cannot kill old Lima locos. I left some of mine in a leaky shed for over a decade and got them out. Cleaned the motor with a quick spray of electronic contact cleaner and they all ran!
Damn that’s one crusty box of stuff….. still these abandoned collections can contain GEMS. I found a entire Tri-ang train set in one. I could talk all day about my finds! Cool haul SMT:D
Wow Harrison, thanks so much for giving that old box a good home. I’m glad you found some interesting stuff in there and I’ve shared the video with my brother who was the original owner of the train set. So glad you can give some items new life!
The Pioneer/Pool elevators with Biggar Saskatchewan on them👍I lived there for a bit as a kid. Biggar's a crew change point for CN. I drove thru there last summer on my"Search for 6060"trip last summer🚂🇨🇦🙋
My 8 and 5 year old sons love your videos, Harrison! They recently got HO model trains, and they now make their own unboxing videos. They'd love to send you a video of their trains running. :)
Because of your maintenance videos I felt confident the i could fix my late father’s 040 and now im working on my dad’s 1980s Ho Scale Life Like Santa Fe 3500 Diesel Locomotive black and yellow scheme
For the Canuckistahni algorithm. The MILW caboose is Athearn or Botchmann and is kinda prototypical. The body is Sante Fe (thank you, Robert N. I was thinking Southern Pacific...because everything Irv Athearn did was Espee) but the aluminum paint was a Milwaukee Road test scheme to improve visibility at night.
I have one of those Bachmann engines. I have had it since the 80s, it has two lightbulbs, all wheel pickups and all wheel drive. Really heavy and pretty well built. WAAAY better than the new stuff from Bachmann
Hi Harrison. I have not abandoned my HO collection but decided upon on HO DCC. The DC ones work fine. I service them and clean their wheels and strip those ringfield motors. The Intercity 125 headlights dont work because the bulbs may have got burnt. Must check. I was hoping to sell two dummy and two motorized units and the 2 class Bo Bo diesel locos and buy a carefully used DCC sound locomotive.
Hey SMT Mainline i know you will not see this but what the hey. I love the videos and LOVE the restoring videos and tbh your videos helped me out of depression and made me to go out and go train spotting witch is now my favourite hobby and well now I want to get a HO train layout and i have all this because of your great videos. have a good day!
Thanks a bunch, it means a lot to hear something like that. Model railroading can certainly be a huge stress relief, it takes one’s focus off everything for a moment.
Nice haul! I recently picked up that same Nickel Plate Road flat car at my local train show back in January, it came with a small plastic model plane (a Beechcraft bonanza I think) and the little structure on the flat car held the fuselage steady on it and the wings were removable and sat below it. Not sure if it was a set originally but yours might have the accompanying plane in that box somewhere possibly lol
Nice hoard there. The two locomotives are a nice addition. What I would recommend is just add a drop of oil to the gears and give them a running session of about 30-45 minutes on the track. This will burn off any oxidisation on the commutator and they will run a lot better and be more responsive after that. Just clean off the oxide from the pickups will help as well. I really love older retro model trains besides the modern stuff. I assume the CN engine is a EMD GP40-2? Peter.
The grain elevators look like they were some sort of give away piggy bank in close enough scale. Even as a guy from the Chicago burbs those just scream ( in a very polite way) Canada and Alberta specifically. Looks like the other set of stairs to the pedestrian overpass was mixed in with the debris in the box
they most definitely were !!! (grain elevator bank) my grandparents have had one all my life which is a bit ,,, i also have acquired one as well . was going to comment until i saw yours . thin brown plastic can remove the bottom slot for coins on top classic prairie plastique antique
That orange small open truck with a gadget in the middle is actually a crane boom rest. They come in two or three ca formations. (stand to be corrected).
Howdy SMT! Looks like a fairly decent haul you got. The Backhmann GP40s probably came in a combo box where there was 1 powered and 1 dummy engine. I used to see them sold like that during the late 70s to early 80s. Also the Lima 0-4-0s are the same as the Life Life dockside switchers right in terms of design right?
Like most older Triang derived Hornby , Oscar Paisley is likely to have given some great coverage on it, as he has with that crane set : ruclips.net/video/u5Nh3kBFzaE/видео.html Also has one of the earlier Hornby Dublo diecast cranes before Hornby went broke and Triang bought the name and passed the remaining tooling to Wrenn. The original Hornby Dublo ceased production in Liverpool about 1963 or 64. Triang kept using their Margate factory and staff with the Triang designs and tooling.
I recently got the same Milwaukee Road 01924 caboose from a donation to my club. I suspect that it came from an actual Athearn train set. I have assigned it to a train pulled by a (much newer!) Atlas HH660. Out of the same donation lot, I also got a Bachmann GP40 in CP Rail. Runs great! But some of the details on it are atrocious! Nonetheless, I plan to install DCC and knuckle couplers, and run it with some of the trains from my childhood.
Yeah SMT, you got enough💩there to make a Non-Functional Diorama with. I just love how they shoved that piece of flex track in that box, just like a pretzel🥨🤣🤣
Would you recommend a Bachmann N-Scale starter set for $99 or a Lionel Santa Fe with DCC for $397. This will be my first set. I also look at the koto passenger sets.
It's really a matter of preference, $99 isn't too bad for an entire train set so maybe get that and buy some stuff to go with it since you saved some $297 bucks.
That hornby triang breakdown crane is one of the more iconic items they produced.
Maybe it will be restored someday.
I believe Hornby still make it, don’t they?
You're right. You'll never know what you will in an old collection. Nice vintage stuff. From Texas
I always love boxes like these you can find things inside that you wouldn't buy for your layout but when you find it you just want to incorporate it into your layout!
So glad that collection found a new home! Have fun restoring it all.

Thanks for the detailed information!
Love it when u find random model train stuff in old boxes 😂
SMT is a literal model train god, WHATEVER loco he touches it either comes back to life no worries or is easily fixed by him no matter the problem.
Not really but thanks lol
Is your pfp a Nissan gtr semi truck 😂

I think everything has been sitting quite some time, hopefully it can still be put to use.
🙀
I love going thru mystery box lots like this that I find at auctions!!!!
Wow Harrison, thanks so much for giving that old box a good home. I’m glad you found some interesting stuff in there and I’ve shared the video with my brother who was the original owner of the train set. So glad you can give some items new life!

Love the old equipment!!! I'm a southern railroad fan!!! Don't see much of that ho stock around!!!

gotta love how old bachmann dummy engines almost run more than the powered ones
Honestly dig the look of those Bachmann locomotives with the dust and foliage on them lol
I like the grain towers. What a neat find!
Me at the 2 minute mark: GET TO THE TRAINS! lol. Always fun watching you go through a box of goodies. It’s like watching Storage Wars.
For the Canuckistahni algorithm.

As a Canbackistan citizen I appreciate it.
Love the unboxing!
What a hot mess. Looks like a fun box of projects you got there
That was fun going through a mystery box. I think I have a Lima like that. They do run pretty good.
I recently had a family friend gift me a model train collection. Looking at someone''s old collection is a nice window into the past sometimes.
No million dollar prize, but a bunch of perfectly usable equipment.
Absolutely

I have one of the Southern 3 door box cars. The one I have is a Bachmann. It is a nice looking box car.
Nice haul! I’ll probably just clean the commutators just in case there is carbon build up but otherwise that sounds good.
Serenity! We have 2 runners. Cheers
I wish I could meet you! Your one of my favorite model train RUclipsr 😁😁😁

You inspired me to start my own videos about ho scale trains
Lot of 70s-era stuff that I had on my first layout.
Hi Harrison. Great video! Never know what you might find in an old box!
That 0-4-0 sounds like a coffee grinder!
Wow I’m so glad SMT is a channel I really just enjoy sitting down n my couch and watching SMT, what a channel
Grab yourself a hot cup of coffee or a cold glass of tea, it's time to watch SMT.
@@SMTMainline amen 🙏 I sure will 😄🙂
Another great video from Smt Mainline
The grain elevator was a piggy bank. They were common in the 60s and 70s. Every grain company had them.
6:33 I just realized there was a dead ladybug there sitting there.

The lima 0-4-0s are different from lifelike. Lifelike used a design originally made by Varney or Rivaorssi.
You got "curiosity kills the cat", and you got "simplicity saves the loco"
Those 3 odd little trucks go with the Hornby\Triang 75 Ton railway crane.
Nice finds. Very interesting
👍👍Nice, some cleaning and oil should e good to go! 🚂🚂
Those grain elevators look like they would work for N Scale.

Great video. The two cn locomotives are cool
The 2 small red cars go with the crane an longer red car they r idlers
Love the lumberyard. I sort of run one. Hard to explain, I think it’s more if I been there so long now..anyway thought it was neat
I wish I had the time you did man I’d love to make vids like yours
That little black 0-4-0 is the same as the first loco my parents got me. Mine doesn't have a number on the cab site though.
Atlas control switch for reversing loops, used to use them a lot.
Nice ❤️ 👌 👍 been sitting for years but with some tlc should be start
I have the HIllside Lumber & MIllwork building.
Hi 👋 😊
I have always wanted a crane like that. Their not common from my experience so hold on to it
Atlas switch controllers were the DCC before DCC.
SMT- The structure you are looking over at 3:27 is a Bachmann HO Plasticville Pedestrian Overpass bridge.
that do be a tight turn
Rudolph the GP 40 had a very shiny nose and if you ever saw him you would even say he goes!
Lol
the old 0-4-0 has sound equiped
It was at the model club swap in Eugene, Oregon
You should use the moss for weathering for trains that just sit
Good idea.
i love the train collection series
4:30 this is starting to be a trend in your latest videos.
You should keep it all the dirt and dust and it to make it like it's a train grave yard on your layout.
Hi
Not a bad idea but I don’t think I have the space

Great Video SMT, Can't wait for next stream
love that 0-4-0!
'Life is like a box of locomotives' 😉
Rare builder plus paper goods shed
You should restore roughest old prewar lionel trains
I should dig out my old 1970 Triang set and send it to you Harrison. It’s not doing much packed away in my store room.
Really nice lot ❤️
I watched every one of your videos please do more
Hey Harrison I hope you can use all of this stuff
old Limas are indestructible
This just hurts me inside watching me going through local antique stores for good deals and some guy in his 80s THROWS it in a box.
I would sure like to see you work on a lot more locomotives if you will
Would like to see more of the crane setup.. Please
I like those grain elevators
I WANT ALL OF THOSE HO SCALE TRAIN'S AND THAT OTHER THINGS
Yeah SMT, you got enough💩there to make a Non-Functional Diorama with. I just love how they shoved that piece of flex track in that box, just like a pretzel🥨🤣🤣
It's not in great shape bit should be good for that new layout.
4:28 it was about to be a runaway
hey smt i could use the O-scale bridge you found, I've started an O-scale layout but i don't have anything (bridge's, tree's or buildings) to add.
