  • It's been over two months since I last did a mail unboxing to today I decided to do a mega one featuring seven parcels. Collectively between the boxes there were countless vintage ho and n scale locomotives, track and buildings.
    A huge thanks to everyone who contributed to this unboxing for your generosity!

    That little green engine is a Norris Locomotive Works 4-2-0. Norris started building them in the late 1830s, started delivery of them in the early 1840s, they called it the England class because they built them for the Birmingham & Gloucester Railway in England. The first one was called the George Washington, for its trial run it was tested on a 7% grade in Philadelphia, becoming the first locomotive to climb a hill under its own power pulling a load, proving steam locomotives could climb grades while pulling loads, this accomplishment was so amazing that engineering journals at the time doubted it happened and a second trial with a heavier load than the first took place, the locomotive pulled it with ease.

      @@billfusionenterprise No it is not, you're thinking of Bachmanns La Fayette set. La Fayette was one of Norris' England class locomotives. The John Bull was originally an 0-4-0 with a leading truck added later changing it to a 2-4-0, the John Bull has 4 driving wheels not 2, the train sets model both engines correctly, the La Fayette is a 4-2-0 while the John bull is a 2-4-0.

    The Shay is a Model Die Casting / Roundhouse kit engine. You can find parts on EBay. They are noisy by design. There are you tube videos on tuning for best operation. VERY FINICKY. The Round BoxCab Diesel uses the same drive line design. Most of the noise comes from straight cut gears. And when the body’s are added the noise gets amplified.

    I knew exactly what that N scale flat car was the minute you unwrapped it Harrison because I have the same type of car in HO scale only mine is a Walthers Mainline model decorated for TTX. These cars can run with either four 20 foot containers, two 40 foot containers, or a two 20 foot and one 40 foot container load configuration. I've also got a few of those old Athearn blue box passenger cars as well. The most trouble I encountered assembling these cars are actually pressing the windows in place. You may have to do some trimming and filing to get everything to fit properly, but they look very nice when finished! Very cool lot from some generous viewers Harrison, thanks for sharing and happy holidays!

    I like N scale as background add ons. About 20 years ago I had a sweet mixed scale layout in my old houses basement. It was a huge layout. 30ft long 9ft wide. It took up half the basement. The first 5 ft was flat But the back 3 or 4 ft was a mountian/valley range that i had set up A 3 N scale loops on with tunnels. 1 was a mixed freight consist 1 was a passenger train and the other was a 14 car coal train. N scale works great to give the appearance of a train in the distance.

    That Bachmann Pegasus is a recolour of that B&ORR Lafayette locomotive. There is also another recolour named the Prussia. Most of these locomotives came in sets during the 80s and there are multiple others, such as the john bull, the dewitt clinton and my personal headache, the lafayette. You are very lucky that it ran. These locos are so fragile that if you sneeze they fall to bits.

    It's great to see the PC Train set pieces come out. I'm thrilled to finally have ALL of the sets in their entirety, which took quite some time to build up. Almost all of them are with full boxes intact. Two of the boxes are slightly damaged, which was fully my fault, in sets I bought back when they first came out and was so excited to have them that I didn't think of the future of what these sets would eventually mean, and paid little attention to the boxes themselves. Pity, because it would have been something else to have every set and every box completely intact.
    I really wish they would put out these sets again. I've sent many letters to PC "Insiders" about it, but they don't seem to see enough interest in it to ever restart them.

I bought it as is. When I put it on the layout , it was shorting out. I didn't think it worker at all!! Good thing it does, all you need is to find the piston parts!. The SOO "B" unit just need the wires reattached. I glad some comments that viewers likes the painting of the Soo Lines!! The CN engine just needs the handrails, I thought you could use the ones from the 2 shells!. Again Great haul from everybody who sent stuff in. Nice haul. It's Chicago Great Western on that boxcar just to avoid confusion with the British Great Western and Colorado shortline Great Western.
    The herald is referred to as the Lucky Strike logo due to it's similarly to the logo of Lucky Strike cigarettes.
    Not surprised you haven't heard much of it as I'm 61 years old and the CGW vanished into the Chicago & Northwestern when I was 7 years old and really except for some short segments here and there is mostly bike trails and reclaimed by farmers with nary a sign that up to 12 unit AB F units, GP30s or SD40s pulled 200 car freight trains ran there and while things have gotten better in the last 15 20 years I can only think of a AHM chemical tank,a short lived offering in Athearns 62 foot tank car and a company that offered custom painted 50 foot plug door in CGW.
    Flexi Van service was early container service on passenger trains in the late 50s and 60s. NYC, Milwaukee Road, IC and possibly more that slip my mind at the moment.

      First time hearing any of this. Was the similarities between the logos intentional or just a coincidence?

    • @garysprandel1817
      @garysprandel1817 Год назад +1

      @@SMTMainline coincidence. If you look at a larger version of the CGW logo the band around the circle is actually slightly offset and was supposed to represent a stylized flanged wheel but railfans particularly since it was adopted in the early to mid 50s went with the similarity to a popular cigarette brand logo.

    A little thing about that orange hustler. The D&RGW railroad is officially known as the Denver & Rio Grande western. It was operated by Southern Pacific until 1992, when it was consolidated into Union Pacific.

      The story on all Athearn blue box passenger cars is they're to short. They're made short so they fit on 18" radius curves. They should be 80' feet in ho but are much shorter.

    • @mercuryoak2
      @mercuryoak2 Год назад +1

      @@bryanphillips6666 well the ones I have on 18-in radius curves which isn't my layout curves because my layout has been taken down since I moved. But the cars end up hitting each other on the ends with a small loop of ez track that I have set up temporary so they're better off with 22-in or broader curves. Also to me it doesn't matter about the length and all that other stuff I don't care for it. That's why I have customized my Mantua pacifics and a Riverrossi docksider and I love the fact that it irritates people because the Mantua pacifics are technically Baltimore Ohio boilers. I literally was in a nmra Facebook group and the fact that guys were losing their minds because God forbid I stepped outside the box. I find it hilarious. I left the group because I couldn't stand them badgering me to the point where I would have gotten banned was saying what I wanted to say.

    Hello SMT! The Classic Trains magazine I sent you has an article on Canadian National's Super Continental passenger train. I thought you might find that interesting since you are a fan of the CN. The maps are from a 1948 railroad atlas & areas where there are parallel lines, they draw one line & list the abbreviations for the railroads above the line. The Central Valley parts are replacement chassis kits for 40-foot freight cars, such as boxcars, reefers, livestock cars. I sent the trucks and weights to use with them. But you probably could also use them to scratch build a flat car!
