Sean B. Carroll is an award-winning scientist, author, educator, and film producer. He is Distinguished University Professor and the Andrew and Mary Balo and NIcholas and Susan Simon Chair of Biology at the University of Maryland, and an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He was formerly Head of HHMI Tangled Bank Studios, and led the Department of Science Education from 2010-2023. He is also Professor Emeritus of Genetics and Molecular Biology at the University of Wisconsin.
An internationally-recognized evolutionary biologist, Carroll's laboratory research has centered on the genes that control animal body patterns and play major roles in the evolution of animal diversity. In recognition of his scientific contributions, Carroll has received the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Life Sciences, been elected to the National Academy of Sciences and the American Philosophical Society, named a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and elected an Associate Member of the European Molecular Biology Organization.

I appreciate the optimistic tone, suggesting that significant improvements can be seen within a relatively short period if we take action. This is an encouraging message, especially in a time when environmental news can often be overwhelmingly negative 😅
Unfortunately it is all just smile and be happy despite the reality of severe decline all over the Earth. Big oil wants you to remain calm and driving on fossil fuels to make themselves even 'richer'. Humans are not exempt from extinction!

I have been collecting wildflowers from the field surrounding my house prior to their development. I have only been doing this for a handful of years. I started with a small 10 square foot section of my back yard, and every year added a little more. Last year once I was free of a dreaded trampoline, I spread it to nearly the entire yard, save my pepper garden.I have collected as much as many things as possible and spread them evenly with the idea that they will simply survive and thrive where they can in my yard. Along the way the diversity of as I like to say these days " visitors to the guest book" has exploded. I grew up in this area, in a generation that spent most of its time outside. Despite that I regularly see creatures of all types new to me . I'm simply amazed, and honored to support dozens upon dozens of pollinators, and their predators.
Even the video makes it pretty clear, that WE need to change a lot if we don't want to destroy nature (humans included).
The video does say that we can't be "business as usual" if we want nature to rebound.
It’s not an ideology, it’s science. The planet is getting destroyed and CO2 is building up into our atmosphere creating rapid and drastic changes in our climate. The number of species that have disappeared and the rate with which existing ones are going extinct is not normal. You can go on. It’s not naive and simplistic, it’s actually complex and most people understand that. You choose to ignore facts, it’s a choice. Don’t call science and ideology it makes you sounds dumber than you probably are.
@bsmithhammer is prime example why this video is so stupid: all the climate change deniers and other such idiots go and say; see, we don’t have to change our ways. Someone will cycle to work or plant some carrots at communal garden. Let’s just keep dumping plastic and warming the atmospehere.
Nature thrives in our absence - that's the real message. It's not because human's "manage" nature, it's because billions of us quit destroying nature.
Unfortunately the rampant destruction continues day after day, non stop, 24/7. And a lot of people like their plastic lifestyle of total annihilation and comprehensive denial. Humans are not exempt from extinction.
I appreciate the message of hope, but this is highly oversimplified. In most cases, just stopping our destructive actions will not restore biodiversity. We've destroyed too much habitat and altered ecological systems in such a way that they will require extensive restoration efforts to even make them suitable for wildlife, which is difficult and expensive. Intensive management will be needed in many cases. Even in his own example of bringing back bald eagles, banning DDT was only half the story. Hacking techniques had to be employed to reintroduce eagles. Again, difficult and expensive. And conservation is not a high priority for most governments, making funding options tough to come by. Conservation is also the least well-funded of all charity types, so public support is also low. Planting natives in your yard is a great idea, and everyone should do it, but it's not going to save the planet. Reducing or eliminating meat consumption (ranching is the biggest driver of habitat loss), voting for pro-conservation politicians, and giving a lot of money to conservation NGOs is what needs to be done.

@@TheJesusFreeke Honestly, the best sources will be journals like Conservation Biology, Restoration Ecology, Applied Ecology, etc. There are also many good trade books like Corridor Ecology and Ecological Restoration. But for the general public, I'd recommend a few pop science books like The Sixth Extinction by Elizabeth Kolbert and Song of the Dodo by David Quammen. There are probably some decent RUclips videos out there, but those that are founded on sound science and not flashy, simple messages are nowhere near as popular and don't get the traction as the latter videos, so they don't pop up in anyone's feed and go unnoticed. This is really a larger issue of social media in general.
Sean insights on biodiversity and the resilience of nature are truly inspiring! His emphasis on local action reminds us that every individual effort counts towards a larger environmental impact. 🌍

Shallow psychopathic optimism in the current reality of mass extinction just doesn't cut it. Fossil fuel propanganda is a deadly pill... For all of us. Humans are not exempt from extinction. It looks like this movie will not have a happy ending.

This is awesome stuff! I mastered in Data Analytics in hopes of becoming a Data Scientist to help find trends in Earth science or medicine that could help everyone.
Try the Fallow Continent idea. It would take a genie with a magic lamp to get people to agree to do it, but having everyone in the world live on a single highly verticalized continent, move to the next continent every 25 years would give the remaining continents 125 years to regrow. Construction groups would be the only active members on the next continent, using the most advanced civil engineering and construction standards. During the 25 years, they'd prepare the continent for the great migration. Everyone could live together, nobody would be fleeing one nation for another. There would still be regional in-fighting, but the whole planet would have a say in what goes on where we live. Nobody would be without a home. Skyscraper greenhouses. You could still choose to preserve historic structures, but say goodbye to most of the regular buildings. Nature would reclaim and dismantle them. Say goodbye to lumber costs, as there would be tremendous regrowth. We might even get our population down to a more reasonable number (5-6 billion?)
Sometimes what's best for the planet is for humans to get out of the way and stand aside, watch, and learn...

Great video Mr. Carroll. But despite great efforts in Gorongosa N. P., the civil war has left a big residue on the elephants living there. Most of the females are now tuskless, which also affects their offspring (your can guess why, what with the the illegal ivory trade). This serves as a reminder that actions have consequences, including nature.
I agree, as a biology student, nature is what keeps our planet alive, and so it’s our duty to help her heal from our mistreatments, e.g. pollution, habitat loss, poaching, etc. May your presentation be a light on our path to coexistence

This is a very optimistic message that he's sharing, and the child in me wants to believe in it. But the more cynical side of me sees that not everyone's heart can be swayed this way. And if not enough hands turn the wheel, nothing can be set in motion.

I argue that local initiatives are the only rational choice in the climate era we live in. A warmer atmospheric means local self sufficiency is necessary to ride over the larger scale disruptions inherent in a warmer climate. Large scale long term projects are subject to much higher frequency and magnitude of disaster. In order to navigate such a world regional (county) level organization is key. Self sufficient cities and towns linked by mutual aid will provide core resilience.

I’d like a clearer understanding of how this process works regarding “forever chemicals” and microplastics. They have contaminated all creatures on earth cuz that “fresh, clear” water you are talking about is full of both
I think the only hope we have there is to find some way to use the plastic we currently make as it’s only recyclable if it is at all about 7 times before it’s too degraded. And then we need a way to either filter out micro and nano plastics and then burn them or we need some sort of safe bacteria that eats it. In long run I think one would evolve but we ain’t got time for that. Forever chemicals again it’s going to be filtration on some level but to my knowledge doing so either isn’t active yet or is slow to release. Best to talk with water company and ask them.

Nature is great and capable of bouncing back, but the problem is that most people have no idea how important biodiversity is in their lives and therefore they have no reason to invest in improving the environment. And for politicians it would mean making unpopular policies in the game they play of who can be most popular, so they have no interest either.

I see the main issue is how we farm with tillage and fertilizers and poisonous herbicides. As soon as we start farming with diversity and using methods such as biomimicry, only then will we be able to make true change on a global scale. But our corporate overlords will not permit that.

This will never happen unless we abolish large, multinational, corporations and professional politicians. Both of whom are willing to do ANYTHING for profit.
It’s important that we remain actively hopeful (acting positively in relation to our belief in the possibility of better), but we have to remain deeply cautious that we don’t over-emphasise resilience outside of its ecological context. Many of the examples given are the result of coherent(ish) human coordination that restraints human activities. More broadly, especially if we are attuned to the nuances of the metacrisis, we seem to lack the wisdom to effectively steward our power as a custodial species. So, without something like a wisdom revolution, it seems deeply unlikely that we will find a way to bring life back within planetary boundaries while also ensuing every person on the planet has what they need to live a healthy and dignified life.

Let's say human history is 20,000 years old. The earth is 4,500,000,000. That is 0.0004% of earth's history. Biodiversity is going to bounce back quickly. But probably without the capability to sustain human life as we know it.

All species everywhere in the universe have only three mandates. First, to recognize that they are part of a web of life and that they are inseparable from and totally dependent upon the health, well-being and survival of that ecologically-based life-support system for their own health, wellbeing and survival. Thus our economy ought to be viewed as a subset of the ecosystem designed to build up the carrying capacity of humans by enhancing the carrying capacity of the ecosystem with ecologically literate humans functioning as keystone species and reaping only the excess ecological productivity to sustain their subsistence survival. Second, they must propagate their species and their mutually codependent life-sustaining ecosystem throughout the universe where alien species have not already done so. Third, they must defend their species and their ecologically-based life-support system from all threats and hazards, both internal and external, that might cause it harm. ALL human actions including policy decisions, laws, and expenditures of resources should be held up against these three mandates. If they further these objectives, they should be done. If they don't, they should not be done. The universe functions as a high pass filter, only the moral species that follows these laws is allowed to continue to evolve and survive. All others go extinct. No gods need be evoked to punish or save, we do it to ourselves through our free will decisions. Most species, due to ignorance, insanity, criminal selfishness, stupidity or complacency, choose extinction. This explains the Fermi Paradox. Rather than foolishly trying to harness all energy and resources for ourselves (which would rob our ecologically-based life-support system of resources and hence destroy ourselves) we should aim to become a Type I ETHICAL civilization -- one that can prove that it can live sustainably, harmoniously and peacefully on its home world. And then aim to become a Type II Civilization -- one who can successfully live sustainably, harmoniously and peacefully within its home solar system. "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you and love thy neighbors as thyself" with others and neighbors defined as all living things, human and non-human everywhere in the universe. That sums up the fundamental law of the universe! Let's do it! Let's get started today! I appreciate your comments and suggestions!

Not only we are the only specie who left the planet earth, but we're the only specie who doesn't follow the "Survival of the fittest" law of nature.
Not to be pedantic, but this is incorrect. There is no way to not follow "Survival of the fittest" because by definition those that survive and reproduce are the best adapted to their circumstances.
Sometimes "the fittest" are also just lucky enough to be born in a certain area or at a certain time. Take the example of these 1000 pairs of eagles. If you had two genetically identical eagle ancestors the one born in NY they probably didn't survive due to human habitat destruction, but the one born in New Mexico probably did.

Ummm…sorry to break the news but it’s the whole “doing something” that is the problem. The reason being is that to “do something” requires fossil fuels every step of the way, as we were born into a fossil fueled world w/ ~8 billion + creatures - all w/ this insatiable need to “do something.” We are “doing something,” everyone is, all the time & everywhere. fighting for clean water, clean air, healthy soil... yes! fighting against a gas that is essential for plants to grow... no.
Yes, CO2 is necessary for plant growth, but too much in the atmosphere can actually decrease growth. Plants, like all living things, have thermal tolerances. A warming planet will reduce the growth of many plant species. Some species (both plant and animal) may be able to migrate to higher latitudes, but that depends on whether or not they can locate corridors in our human-dominated landscapes to allow migration. Often, this is not the case. Additionally, we will see drier or wetter conditions predominate in many parts of the world, altering the vegetative communities. In some deserts, the landscape may become nearly devoid of plant life. Climate change isn't going to destroy the planet, but it will fundamentally change it, and not for the better.

Stupid take. Small local areas or single species can be revived, sure. If someone cycles to work or plants some carrots at communal garden, it does not help shit to mitigate climate change. Once something is irreversible it is too late and that is what climate change is at this point.
It’s a bottom up strategy not a top down one. Tech we need both. And I would argue that cycling helps and gardens at least get you into composting typically and that reduces methane release into atmosphere. Plus if enough people do it it can reduce shipping trucks to stores. There is also a slight effect from weight of a product on gas mileage, if they are shipping 100 less carrots it would be small but it could be called by the number of people in a country doing it
