Make a deal with whoever you live with. Like say if you pass all your classes with a B+ or something like that you can get the animal. It's how I worked out getting a snake. My grandma despises snakes as well, but still getting one if I keep up my end of the deal.
Grayce Kovarik my mom is absolutely terrified of snakes to the point to were if she can't run away from it she will beat you and the snake with whatevers near her until it's gone and she said that when I move out and have a snake she won't visit unless it's in another room with the door locked. She's gotten a bit better about being in the same room as a snake (ie pet stores) but she won't get anywhere near them unless she doesn't know they are there. I'm still working on convincing her to try to get over her fear but once something's in here mind it's really hard to convince her otherwise.
Grayce Kovarik It’s actually great that you want one now, even if you can’t get one. Be sure to study up and find the breed you want. Save, save, save up as much money as you can. Then, when you eventually graduate high school and find your own place, you’ll be fully prepared! Well, at least that’s what I did. Good luck love :)
If you buy a used tank that already has a lid, make your own hides and decorations, it can be fairly inexpensive. I got fake plants from the dollar tree, used a plastic planter from the dollar tree, and buy generic Aspen bedding from Walmart. My bowl is a small casserole dish from a thrift store and was only $2. Be creative, as long as it is safe for your reptile. Also made my beardie a hide out of a cheap wicker basket. Love your videos, got some good corn snake advise from you. Take care.

You'd be surprised how many families put tanks on the road when a small easy to fix area is broken. I just got a sixty gallon aquarium this way, all it was missing was a tank lid and it did have a small crack.
For me with my snakes you have the initial setup and enclosure cost of $100-$400 on top of the cost of the snake. Then for monthly cost you have about $10-$20 per snake. Also if you plan on getting a snake (or any other animal), save up and store away a good chunk of change for vet bills. Snakes are exoctic pets so you need to see an exoctic vet meaning they cost more on average. It is irresponsible to get a pet that you can not afford medical treatment for if something happens. Call the vet that you plan on using and ask for some quotes on cost for the common problem snakes experience then for me I save up one and half times the cost of the most costly problem.
CrazyIrishMedic and make sure you call around vets for the best price when I got my Bobo from his previous owner it was a total of $110. $65 for a visit and $45 for antibiotic shots. Cheapest exotic pet price I have found and not only that but they know their stuff too which is a huge bonus.
I guess i am really lucky, my vet does free control visits and asks to get paid only if the animal is sick and he must do something. The only time i paid (my snake had a respiratory infection and parasites) i paid just around 30$ :O

So as a recent buyer 20 gal are usually around 80-100 which is perfect if your just starting out and don’t have a thousand dollars to just drop on the hobby. 2 hides would be about 30$ for the max and probably 10-15 for a water bowl big enough for your snake to soak in and I tried to go bigger so I won’t have to buy more stuff in the future kinda like buying slightly bigger shoes and growing into them. I used coconut fiber substrate which was 9.99 a bag that was enough to cover 2 inches on the bottom and still have some left over. Also you can go on eBay and find cheaper lights that use less power but still have the heat from the day light and uvs from the night light and it’s around 40$ for that and if you want to decorate your tank probably add 50 max for some moss and a log or something to put in the middle to make it where it’s not just baren. They need room to grow but they like it to fit just right so I recommend if you get the 20 gal or bigger to make sure you get plenty of decorations. It costed me around 250$ for the initial setup with food and everything else. And with the snake around 300$ for set up food and a beautiful ball python that’s my baby. I only made this comment to verify your estimates were pretty damn accurate. I’d say spot on but every situation and person is different.
I'm a new subscriber and I'm currently trying to get everything for his/her home all set and ready before even buying the snake. Which means figuring out the temp -hum first and foremost. Your videos are super helpful.
Gr8 free hide; broken large decorative pots. If you see one broken at a big box store, they will usually give them away. Glazed pots look better but unglazed holds more moisture. The rough interior of a well made pot is nice for scratching too. My Ball, Sulley, has a pot hide & a fake log hide too.
I live in the U.K, there’s quite a lot of reptile keepers over here. The most popular and easiest to find enclosure over here is wooden Vivariums with glass sliding doors. They are actually really easy to maintain. They have ventilation at the top back and have slots for wires like thermostats. It’s kinda the only option here in the U.K. as it’s weirdly hard to find exo terra glass enclosures. Unfortunately they are pretty expensive 😣 The lengths we go for our pets am I right? 😂

Get a ball python normally if it isnt a fancy morph they arent that expensive and the setup doesnt have to be that complicated just a few hides water bowl and a substrate and heating equipment. My ball python is a normal and for just the snake it was £65 english pounds and the setup was 130 english pounds
I think you should also consider electricity bills into the general costs of keeping a pet snake. I was calculating a bit, depending on the heating source it varies a lot, but if you have several snakes and live in a colder climate/ older house/ it might go up considerably, if it is a snake, that prefers it a lot warmer than your room temperature. Super helpful video, that would be the only thing i'd like to add!
Hi, I would really suggest you to build an enclousure by your self! If you do it out of OSB its really cheap. I did build 2 of mine by myself and its not that hard and it makes a lot of fun. Whats positiv too is that those OSB it isolate a lot better than glas, so your power costs go down a lot. And because it's out of wood you can install anithing you want a lot easier than in a glas tank, because you can drill holes into it etc. So for a big tank thats like 150cm x 80cm x80cm with glasfront you spend around 50 to 100€. If you have any questions on how to build it you can ask me or just watch youtube videos like I did :D
In England I gor an exo-terra medium long and it was about 80 quid. I got this for my new (and first) anerythristic corn snake. Finally my first reptile!!
I got my viv and stuff 2nd hand or on sale, the setup cost in total £50 and that included everything (45x45 exo terra viv, with bg, heat mat, thermostat, etc,) I have a hamster that uses the same type of substrate so the substrate is essentially free, or about £10 every 3 months. The food is £5 per month, and the snake itsself (corn) was £40. Overall, under £100 for starting fees, and about £5-£10 per month for upkeep. This is in GBP £ not USD $, but even in USD that's still fairly cheap. The money saved will be put to getting a new, larger viv when the snake grows up. IMO, next to hamsters, they're the cheapest pets to keep.
Mice are cheaper than rats but rats are supposedly healthier with better fat and protein content. And adult mouse is about the same size as a rat pup so even baby ball pythons can start eating rats. If you go to expos I suggest buying the rats in bulk. Feeder source is at all Repticon shows and have a good price for frozen feeders. You can also order in bulk online too
I have a corn snake who we got from a close friend after she realised she couldn’t keep a snake and she wanted him to go to trusting owners. When we got him he was in a tray and we were old that was what they were meant to be in. It worked well until my cat knocked it off of the side and opened the lid causing the snake to escape. I would say if you have any other pets, particularly cats which are known for knocking things for the fun of it, get a tank or put your plastic box in a hard to reach place for the cat. Tanks are heavier and stay in place meaning the cat cannot move it.
Aquarium holds water (best suited to turtles and fish). Terrariums hold a small amount of water/substrate at the bottom of the tank, and open from the front instead of the top. I would suggest a terrarium as you can live plant it and make it look super naturalistic and it's still easy to access.
@Honey The Mute yeah but they were asking what was better for a BP... terrariums are easier to access, and you can stack them (if they arent too heavy) Personally, If I had a BP (which I dont, because I'm Aussie and we can't own them, but i do own carpets) I would cover the two sides and the background with black paper so the python feels more secure. My big snakes dont require this because they aren't scared of anything. Not even my mums cats, but ball pythons are naturally more reclusive. My big babies love to see what's going on outside their tanks.
Life hack for getting lights(not bulbs) and enclosures. Use Facebook marketplace bc you can find supplies for SUPER cheap! I got my geckos enclosure for 20 bucks but sometimes you can even get them for free
Everyone here, if you want to keep your budget cheap, try going on kijiji or craigslist. You can find so many aquariums and supplies for snakes there for garage sale prices(you can also adopt/buy animals on there too). I buy most of my supplies considering reptile supplies are very expensive. It's also better to go on kijiji or craigslist to buy your animals rather then going to a store. Because you're giving a reptile that hasn't got a home, a home
Do the under tank heating pads burn things? I know its a stupid question but will it cause a fire hazard if I put it on carpet? Or wood? I watched the tank set up video and I still dont quite understand. I understand where it gets placed, but will it damage anything or cause any risks?
To be honest its amazing how little it costs especially when people with me have given snakes to re home we just got new enclosures for them and the food for the snakes isn’t all that expensive a dog or a cat needs food every day 2-3 times a day a snake is 1 mouse or chick every 10 - 12 days
#dedicatedsubscriber I own a ball python, a reticulated python, a Kenyan sand boa, and a hognose, always check Craigslist of aquariums (sanitize it if you do)
I don't even have snakes yet cause it is illegal in my country but I'm keeping all this information for when I get my animals, and also because I'll be studying biology and I want to make sure I have a good amount of information for when I get to the zoology semester and when I specialize in herpentology
on the tub part i dont know what kinda tubsy our getting but a small one that can only fit 2 small shoes coast 30 to 50 bucks hereand i live in the usa
thank you for all the videos you have shared with us . I have a question . I wanna buy corn snake, but I do not want to buy from a pet store, and there is no snake shelter in my city, do you recommend buying it online? if yes which website? and if no what do you recommend? thank you a lot .

I don't have a snake, but I do take my leopard gecko for a check up with an exotic vet once a year. It comes out to about $75 a visit for her wellness exam and poop sample. She is my only reptile (for now) so it is not that bad. If you do have a lot of reptiles I would still recommend sending a poop sample to an exotic vet once a year just to get a screening. My vet has this done every six months (once again, I only have one reptile and live with someone with a weak immune system) and it's about $30. It's just a good way to make sure they don't have any internal parasites or the evil salmonella (sarcasm).
My grown (30 yrs old) youngest son has had 2 ball pythons (male & female) for 11 years that we bought at a Herp show when he was a sophmore in college. We paid $20 for the pair. And they've been great pets! They have NEVER bitten me, & only bit him twice in 11 years. I'm partial to the female and she is the bigger one. He has recorded every feeding for each of them since we've had them. The male does refuse to eat at times, but the female rarely refuses food. He feeds live and frozen mice or baby rats every week.
My mom says next year she might let me get a snake. I was thinking hognose(because they're the only snake small enough to fit in a 10 gallon tank I could think of)
Great video Alex you know you are just a really smart person most people don't make videos like you do and I just think that's what makes you so cool as in if someone ask me about reptiles I'll just tell them go to goherping he knows everything you what to know lol you know what I mean haha
If you use a heat lamp do you put it on one side to have a warm side, if you get one that doesn't have light going out do you keep it on 24/7 or just during the day or night? If I have a heat lamp and need to turn it off during the night or day won't they get cold? If my future pet ball python is in it's hide during the day will the heat lamp hit them so they can be warm?
I owned two snakes a while back, I had a ball python and a corn snake. I had both for a little over two years, my ex left me so we had to split the animals off. He got the ball python I got the cod snake (mainly because I got the corn snake more as a personal pet, rather than a couples pet) I had to rehome the corn snake to a friend when I moved. I’m finally living by myself, and have a tank ready for something to live in. I’m pregnant and would like to get something that can grow up with my kid, what snakes are better for children? Ball python is on the list, but I don’t think my boyfriend approves. (He’s scared of the size)
I'm getting a ball python soon and was wondering if snake starter kits are good. Petco is selling an exo terra snake kit for only 135 dollars right now and want to know if it's good.
You'd probably have to get rid of things, swap things out for something else, and add in other things when it comes to a starter kit. I have my ball python in an exo terra 40 gallon with one cave, one zilla rock lair, repti bark and a large water dish. Take a look at what's in the kit, what you'd need to swap out and add in, and think about the size of the tank and if/when you'd need to upgrade it. Ask yourself if the cost would be worth it to you, or would you rather buy everything individually. It all depends on what you need for your snake. My setup as it is now was about $327, not including my snake.
How many mice would you recommend buying at one time? Like, when ordering online, specifically for a young/baby ball python that's still growing. Also, what are some of the best places to get/order mice/rats? Thanks!

I would really suggest you to build an enclousure by your self!
Jey Jey dude not trying to be rude but u can’t even spell
I love your videos 😇 your so positive 👏🏾 I hope there are other people from Lexington watching 🤞

@@brandonnoll5527 alright if u say so!
The enclosure can cost more depending on stands as well. I scored a huge tank for free but I'm now looking for a stand stable enough to hold it
I'm not a beginner just a dedicated subscriber 😂
In England I gor an exo-terra medium long and it was about 80 quid. I got this for my new (and first) anerythristic corn snake. Finally my first reptile!!
It's funny how you used an example of a pricey UVB from AliExpress and a cheaper one from Zoo Med
That moment when you already have a snake but you're a dedicated subscriber so you watch the whole thing.
Hey I’m 11 just a month until I get my noodle I am so exited I weedeat to get the money
You can also order in bulk online too
This was so helpful thank you!!
Can you please explain the difference between a terrarium and aquarium, and which one is better for snakes (specifically BP)?
Aquarium holds water (best suited to turtles and fish). Terrariums hold a small amount of water/substrate at the bottom of the tank, and open from the front instead of the top. I would suggest a terrarium as you can live plant it and make it look super naturalistic and it's still easy to access.
itsTwiggiBetch2 are u stupid an aquarium is for fish and terrariums are for reptiles
itsTwiggiBetch2 commen sense
@@jakefulton8501 no need to be rude about it. Completely uncalled for.
@Honey The Mute yeah but they were asking what was better for a BP... terrariums are easier to access, and you can stack them (if they arent too heavy)
Personally, If I had a BP (which I dont, because I'm Aussie and we can't own them, but i do own carpets) I would cover the two sides and the background with black paper so the python feels more secure.

Honestly how good a petco is is down to how good the employees are and mine is honestly great.
I don't even have snakes yet cause it is illegal in my country but I'm keeping all this information for when I get my animals, and also because I'll be studying biology and I want to make sure I have a good amount of information for when I get to the zoology semester and when I specialize in herpentology
It might only be 4 days into VEDA but I'm so impressed with the content your posting, noice
Thanks!

Wow, I literally just got done figuring this all up. From starting to annual cost. Smh, well I'll watch anyway to see how close I am.
Petco I'm fine with for supplies or pet grooming. Plus if you raise demand for services and drop it for pets than money will shift accordingly.
To yall that have snakes:
Let's switch lives *please*
I don't have a snake, but I do take my leopard gecko for a check up with an exotic vet once a year. It comes out to about $75 a visit for her wellness exam and poop sample. She is my only reptile (for now) so it is not that bad. If you do have a lot of reptiles I would still recommend sending a poop sample to an exotic vet once a year just to get a screening. My vet has this done every six months (once again, I only have one reptile and live with someone with a weak immune system) and it's about $30. It's just a good way to make sure they don't have any internal parasites or the evil salmonella (sarcasm).
5 snakes and a gecko must be a dedicated subscriber
My grown (30 yrs old) youngest son has had 2 ball pythons (male & female) for 11 years that we bought at a Herp show when he was a sophmore in college. We paid $20 for the pair. And they've been great pets! They have NEVER bitten me, & only bit him twice in 11 years. I'm partial to the female and she is the bigger one. He has recorded every feeding for each of them since we've had them. The male does refuse to eat at times, but the female rarely refuses food. He feeds live and frozen mice or baby rats every week.
I really enjoyed this video, I've thinking what the total cost would be for a snake so thanks!!
Could you do one of these for a blue tongued skink? Thanks!

Could a baby corn snake be good in a 10 gallon
Cool- Rob yes,but not for long
Cool- Rob do ur research idiot
Jake Fulton asking more knowledgeable people is a form of research, idiot.
This is great, but could you make a video on the general things to buy, and a good way to set the tank up
NEWW ROOM??!?1!!?!?1!!
Not yet lol
Would using a tank with a lid make it difficult to control humidity?
Here's one for you, how much does your electricity bill increase by? Heat mats vs Lamps?
They're not interchangeable by species.
Any tips on Kenyan Sand boa shedding? Mine has some stuck on his head and the last 3/4 of his body is still in shed.
My mom says next year she might let me get a snake. I was thinking hognose(because they're the only snake small enough to fit in a 10 gallon tank I could think of)
Can I use the exoterra fanarium to house a ball python hatchling? And can I use heat mat on that?
I’m wondering how much will the electricity bill be if you constantly use a heat Matt or a lamp
Great video Alex you know you are just a really smart person most people don't make videos like you do and I just think that's what makes you so cool as in if someone ask me about reptiles I'll just tell them go to goherping he knows everything you what to know lol you know what I mean haha
I set up an enclosure for my kingsnake for a total of only 60 bucks because I got everything used of made it myself
Im gonna name my snake "Throckmorton"
Really dedicated subscriber 👍🏼
If you use a heat lamp do you put it on one side to have a warm side, if you get one that doesn't have light going out do you keep it on 24/7 or just during the day or night? If I have a heat lamp and need to turn it off during the night or day won't they get cold? If my future pet ball python is in it's hide during the day will the heat lamp hit them so they can be warm?
@@nightinggale6470 Thank you, I don't have a bp yet but I want one in the future and heard that lamps are better.

Also if you live by a Mejier they have good aquariums for low prices I got a 10 gallon for 14 dollars
oh that's pretty good, nearest one is about 50 miles for me but might be worth it for a good deal lol
Rem Stockton seems like a nice setup but shouldn’t u have a hide for each side
How many mice would you recommend buying at one time? Like, when ordering online, specifically for a young/baby ball python that's still growing. Also, what are some of the best places to get/order mice/rats? Thanks!
My corn snake cost me 105 with the set up, and cost about $12 a month.
