    The amount of black in the shellac was just right. The black reads as a neutral “color”. So, it only added to “calm down” the overall look. The black rim with gold in the grain, great! I might have used clear instead of black in the cracks. That way, even if you can’t feel the crack, they won’t look like a crack, I think. Overall, beautiful bowl and a great job! Thanks Mike!

    I have never heard of a Monkey Puzzle tree before Mike, but it does seem to have some interesting characteristics. The end grain does seem to create some problems while turning but it seems to resolve with a lot of time & care in sanding. Quite a nice idea staining the sealer as it suited this wood. Nice shape to the bowl & it finished well with the shellac. Well done my friend, it is a very pleasant bowl to look at. Cheers, Don from South Australia.

      Thanks Don, the wood is also called Chilean Pine and is native to Chile and Argentine although it was brought to the UK in 1795 and it's done quite well over here.

    The bowl looks terrific. Very well done.
    I can imagine the effort cutting away all that end grain, and then the hours to sand out the tool marks. Never fun.
    Good that the cracks were easy to stabilize with the CA glue.
    To paraphrase the name of a famous play and film "A Bowl for All Seasons". LOL

    I'm a natural wood colour kinda gal, so when you added the black I'll admit to cringing a bit lol, but how perfect did it finish up! Beautiful 😍
    Love the shape it ended up with, just perfect.
    Thanks as always for sharing Mike.

    Another lovely piece of work had memorised. I didn’t think the black was going to work however you proved me wrong yet again the black and gold on the top rim was absolutely beautiful. Another masterpiece thoroughly enjoyed watching this look forward to the next one. Keep the channel going and keep the videos coming.

    This turned out quite lovely. I love the black stained shellac it really gave it character. When you added black to the rim i thought it was pretty good but once you added the gold embellishing wax, damn it made the whole piece. The gold pulls more of the yellows out from under the stain and the black underneath had the room trying it all together.
    Stunning piece thank you so much for letting me see it.
    Oh and turning the head stock is probably the better idea unless you really feel confident about turning it left handed. I saw another woodworker hollowing out a piece and he had a chisel that had to be at least a meter long plus a stand to use as a pivot point!

    • @MikeHolton
      @MikeHolton  2 месяца назад

      Thanks Nikkie, since it was suggested I've been dying to try left handed so just wanted to give it a go. Turning the headstock is so much easier like you say. I would love one of those long hollowing tools but they are expensive lol 😀

  • @VickiAndersonwoodturning
    @VickiAndersonwoodturning 2 месяца назад

    I had to chuckle a little when you said hollowing was going to be difficult. As a turner it is all fun and games when turning the outside and then all of the sudden you realize how unpleasant turning the inside is going to be. I have not tried turning in reverse, but am glad you were brave enough to attempt it. Hahaha. Thanks for a great video.

    • @MikeHolton
      @MikeHolton  2 месяца назад

    I like the dyed shellac. Conservative (not teal or red), but it adds character without taking away from the natural variation.
