  • Although we struggle to get the first few arches up on our Quonset Hut, we persevere and finally get a routine down. This is just one of the many steps we need to complete in order to have a fully enclosed and functioning off grid workshop in the future but we're relieved to have the process well underway!
We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure 😀
Thank you for watching and supporting our channel! 💙

40 yrs ago 3 of us built a Quonset Hut. We had no idea what we were doing. You are correct the 1st section is the hardest. If I remember, we build the arch on the ground and took a rope and pulled the arch up to top center. We did tighten the bolt so it would stand on it own. With only two people, you are doing
a great job. You work so well together. The one we build 40+ years ago is still up and looking good.

What I love about this, is that you 2 went from doing concrete on a really small slab for your old house stove, and then moved up slowly, but didn't let the "size" or "complexity" of the situation deter you. Here you are, constructing what is essentially the Empire State Building for the "homestead". Good job. There was a point there where I would have said, "I give up", but you pushed forward. Amazing.

EPIC, TRULY E P I C !!!! I thought the two concrete pours were hard going, but this one tops them, hands down. That tractor is more than earning it's keep....
It will be so satisfying seeing the arches taking shape. Good design, the way that all the sections are able to be handled individually. Tip for tightening the nuts/bolts. Use a coloured paint marker, and when you tighten a nut/bolt, "dot" the nut with it. That way you know each bolt has been tightened.
The salmon & sweet potato fries was a well-deserved meal after a hard day, what a colour, looked great. Epic, truly epic.....!

Hi folks, I've been watching you since you started in Alaska, almost. My wife and I admire your brave new world, experiencing new things and always willing to try more. As a veteran gas station and automotive dealer, construction worker, please hear this. That concrete pour you did was the bravest thing I've ever seen anyone attempt (from tv). It was a very large span and thick, now that its down let it sit for a couple of weeks and stay away from it. It may be hard and strong enough to drive on with out the appearance of damage, but hairline cracks will happen underneath it and will reveal themselves within two or three years. I feel terrible I didn't tell you this after your pour I watched. When we poured concrete in Minnesota we couldn't guarantee our work if a car drove on it with in 7 days specially larger vehicles. Stay off of it and cut your expansion lines firs so if it cracks it will crack short lines. Love you guys and seriously hope I'm wrong. I wonder if you can hear me when you ice fish.

Nice and warm. The slab turned out great considering how much concrete it was. Work safe. In the old days we had double headed nails, 16's and 20's to form with. Had to pull everyone by hand. Yeap, I like those screws. A tip for the nnext slab or pour, put a dab of grease in the screw heads where they might get mix in them. You need sky hooks. Come in handy. Wish I had a set. A frind and I put one of those together for an airplane hanger. No air or electric tools. All hand ratchet and wrenches. No lift, ladders and some scaffolding. Great job especially for two people. Once you learn a system it gets much easier and stable. Good looking meal. Jeanie with a view. Build up a tower to watch the sunset. Take care, wet a line.

86! Holy Smokes, Batman! I remember that when, in Anchorage it was 75 and the townsfolk were bemoaning the heat, Fairbanks was often much hotter. Anchorage is on the Cook Inlet, which moderates the temperatures (when it's not frozen) and keeps the city cooler in the summer. You guys are now FAR beyond the moderating influence of any major waters. Hotter in the summers, and wicked colder in the winters. You'll have entire weeks when it doesn't get above -40F. Get the winter wood supply stacked way up!

I have watched you since the beginning but since the move to your new property my husband has started watching also. We are both amazed by your ingenuity, hard work and get up and go, not just with the building work but the additional time taken to film, edit and upload your videos, is there more than 24 hours in a day in Alaska 😂😂😂😂😂😂. I could watch you every day if you posted. Remember to take some rest. All the best from Scotland x

In previous comment I should have mentioned; Tyvek tape works great for covering screw heads. Just go around putting a small piece on each screw head. Then you can easily wipe any concrete off the tape and the bit goes right through the tape making screw removal easy.
I should also add; In a previous comment I recommended getting a concrete crew. I was wrong, you and your friends did a great job :)

You guys totally amaze me with all you accomplish! I've been following your channel since you moved up to Alaska. You both work together beautifully ❤ I lived in Fairbanks 2011 to 2013 and again 2019 to 2020. I remember one summer we were in the 90's for 2 solid weeks. Since there was no darkness, of course it never cooled down at night. Fairbanks was sold out of fans, air conditioners and bug spray 😅
You became so efficient at building, you could probably hire yourselves out to build for others! 😂🤣
BTW, I love all the food you cook, catch, grow and can! I love your channel ❤️
