  • Winter in Alaska is never a dull season, this upcoming year we will be taking on a particularly challenging task of building a large Quonset hut shop at our new property. Although there is a tremendous amount of preparing to be done, we are happy to have this delivery completed and get to enjoy a few relaxing days at the cabin.
We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure 😀
Thank you for watching and supporting our channel! 💙

Just another day with Arielle and Eric! Hauling 11,000 pounds of Quonset Hut on two trucks for nine hours...tons of snow to clear....minus 22 degrees...unloading 11,000 pounds...and then, of course, a lovely moose stew finished with a glorious banana boat dessert. @@jedidiah5131 I can believe that from watching these two. I rather admire folks that are able to either make this transition and it becoming a way of life or for those who were smart enough to begin with who have always lived this way...I find it kinda mind boggling how back in the day when life was hard (meaning hard working & you worked for everything you had) physical labor and then all these "inventions" started coming about making life "easier" and the folks that couldn't keep up with the "Jones' "
that maybe couldn't afford it or didn't deem it necessary, were either talked about or made fun of for being "simple" I guess would be a good term for it..But my point is, is that look around now and see how people are trying to get back to that...the simple, less complicated way of life. This rat race is a mess. Not everyone will agree with what I am about to say, but I d/c! When this country started turning its back on God...thinking and believing that they are their own god,
it messed up. God bless everyone!

Does it not free u from ur daily drivel even if it is for around half an hour. The photography of the beauty/harshness in nature just transports one to a beautiful space which one would never see even if they actually travel to Alaska or even anyplace else. They never promote their merch, it's just in the body of the video description.

The previous owner of your cabin is a genius for putting the well in the crawl space were it was not subjected to to full brunt of the sub-zero winter temperatures. Common sense is not so common any longer in our country, but the previous owner thought ahead and knew he did not want to have any issues with the water pipes freezing so he took measures to assure they would not freeze. Made many MANY banana boats attending and working at various Girl Scout camps. We always left the peel on but cut a v-shaped notch almost fully down the inner curve of the banana (leaving the cut section of peel attached at one end). The small v-slice of banana was a snack and we filled that space with the toppings then re-covered with the cut peel section and wrapped in foil. Cook till feels extra soft when squeezed with tongs.
My favorite toppings were peanut butter, marshmallows, and a couple chocolate chips.

Tips for building the quenset, it will stand upright by itself after 3 completed strips even with no rear wall, rent a manlift to put it up - ladders suck and it will support the first few strips when you start building, have a small aligning bar handy to line up the holes to start the bolts, use a butterfly air impact to tighten the bolts - it's small light fast and torques the rubber sealing washers down perfectly and after 5 5 gallon pails of nuts and bolts will save your expensive battery powered tools. 2 guys with no experience we had a 40x60 up on a prepared slab in about 4 8 hour days in November with light snow.

Just as added thought. I am so excited to see your work ethic. I sit down with my teenage grandson and have him watch and learn from you folks. So much of the stuff that we old timers used to do back in our younger days and it is something the younger generations need to learn. Getting old is no fun cause we can't work! I always say "what I wouldn't give to be healthy enough to be able to clean out our old barn or weed the garden or make hay". Crazy, but true. Working gets rid of stress and enables our minds to think outside the box and develop ideas for future projects. The ingenuity of our generations before us started out that way. Thank you so much of offering this opportunity to show young people how to work. Stay safe.

I don't ever miss an episode. Love seeing it up there and I can only imagine all the hard work that goes in beyond the camera lens! I just moved to Montana from Texas because I have always craved adventure like you guys live. Getting a couple of winters under my belt before I find some property and build my small cabin. If MT doesn't do it for me, I will be headed that way to Alaska! Alaska is the one duty station I always wanted to get stationed at!

Long time fan and never miss an episode. Wish I could convince my wife to move to Alaska LOL.
Quick FYI for the well pump. I found out the hard way that when running a water pump on a generator (and likely solar system) you need three times the wattage to safely push the pump with the generator. Im not sure why. But it over-taxes the inverter/regulator. Had to replace mine on the old generator twice and eventually shorted out the dynamo. You said the pump is 115V and 12A so it's 1380 watts. Typically 1/2 horse pumps are 500 to 750 watts so more likely its a 1Hp which makes sense if the well is deeper than 25ft or so. I run a 1Hp on a 40ft well. Keep this in mind when designing the solar system because you will need at least 4140 watts to run the pump alone. Of course, it won't be running all the time but something to think about when you decide to run it for extended periods while other things may be running at the same time. Like your freezer in the summer.

Good luck on the build. Currently building my 40x60’ Quonset and trying to get finished before winter hits here in Indiana. My tips:
-pay someone to do concrete prep and pour, I did mine and it took forever cause I was only working nights and weekends without much help. Rain flooded foundation so many times and weather kept holding up foundation work.
-when building the arches make sure you use the provided “story board” angle iron pieces to keep the ribs correct distance apart. Got 12 panels in on mine yesterday and kept having issues getting bolt holes to line up and then checked dims and realized top of arch was growing and bowing out front to back out of vertical square. Taking forever to unbolt and loosen ribs enough to come back and get them to correct offset to pull bldg back into square. Killed a whole day yesterday and still more rework.
-minimum of a 2 person job. Can’t hold and align and bolt together by yourself. Scissor lift is a must, have been putting them up straight and curve on both sides, then short on one side and long on other then both top pieces together on ground and lifting up into position. Working well but kinda slow. Would like to try to build whole arch on ground and lift into place to see if it’s any quicker but don’t have a crane. Taking us about 1-1.5hrs per arch. 30 arches total for 40x60 and I have 15 left so another 20-30 hrs in arches and more for end panels and doors.
-just realizing spray foam is going to be a must. Frosted last night and sun today heats up the metal and cause frost to melt and essentially makes it rain on the inside and would get all of your stuff wet. Hope it gets better when I have the whole place enclosed but not sure.
    For anyone still reading:
    Steel master 40x60 19’ tall S model $35,000
Concrete I did myself but $5K materials (rebar, mesh foam, pex), $24,000 contractor just to put up form boards and pour/finish. Ask me any other questions, I have a cost tracker if you are curious.
Good luck! Great structures from what I can tell. Happy building.

Omg! I’ve never heard anyone have banana boats before we had them when I was a kid in the 70’s and my kids and I would always have them in the summer on the campfire up at the cottage but our banana boats had marshmallows in them with chunks of hersheys milk chocolate bars inside the bananas we would leave the peel on the banana and just cut a little slit in and sorta push on both ends so the banana would open a little bit and that would allow a space for the mini marshmallows and the pieces of milk chocolate. And then we would wrap them in foil and put in the campfire and when we unwrapped them we would dig into the Center and it would be oooey goooey yummy sweet goodness! I’ve never seen a banana boat like yours before but I bet it’s good too!! Looking forward to seeing what all you have planned long term!! You both work sooo well together! Cheers from Orillia, Ontario, Canada 🍁 🥰❤️🇨🇦
