  • We take the opportunity to build one more project in the early winter season, a sawmill shed. Built with freshly milled lumber from the sawmill of course. With the posts fastened and aligned, we place and connect the beams with ties. Next up is rafters and roofing.

    Nothing more rewarding than sawing your own logs for your projects. And keep those used blades handy and be sure to give them a good wipe with some WD-40 lots of life left in those. Put the sharpener and setter on the Christmas wish list. You guy rock, and let’s hear a big Whoot Whoot for the tractor. Looking forward to the next video.

    • @johncollins719
      @johncollins719 10 месяцев назад +6

      Used motor oil on a rag to wipe the blades down. A couple felt wipes rubbing the blade with a drip of diesel mounted on the mill will prevent (minimize) the sap buildup on the blades. Woodmizer has a franchise in Anchorage. They may offer sharpening. Much cheaper than buying the equipment given the number of bands they are likely to use.

    To save your back mount a 2000lb electric winch above the log deck with about 8' of chain on it. Wrap it twice around the log and it won't slip or put marks in a finished side. Worked a treat on the 120+ year old circular sawmill I had a chance to run. Also a leaf blower is your best friend after milling for cleanup before everything freezes. 👍

Your capacity for projects seems limitless and your skills have grown exponentially. The sawmill set up is the best I have seen on RUclips - the concrete base with footers and the home-milled timber superstructure is fantastic. Well done. And - you work methodically and tidily and with the minimum of mistakes! Well done.

    Driving a concrete truck,they have control cables that work fine when they're new but get a little age on them they start freezing up in places on the inside. You could use hot water to thaw them out by pouring on the outside cable sheath. You might want to change out yours.

    Eric those strong ties that you used for your post are definitely really nice to use!!! I used to have a roofing and deck business and put up quite a few decks and would use the same exact ones that you used!!! Most my customers liked using the 1/2” threw bolts instead of just using the screw holes!!! Of course some wanted both and some didn’t care but I’d say at least half wanted the three bolts!!! They help keep the water off of the posts and will help them last a little longer!!! Glad to see you using them!!!

    The visual and auditory experience at the beginning of this video was breathtaking! I am so constantly impressed not only by your editing skills, but also how well you two work together. A true partnership, and a pleasure to watch. The start of the sawmill shed looks amazing - can’t wait to see it progress. As always, thanks for sharing your journey with us!

    Erik: A vertical member is called a "post or column." Horizontal members are called beams (or a joists or a purlin) Just thought you might want to know. I do like that you're building a "post and beam" shed over the sawmill. great job so far!

    After hearing about the 2 major storms that hit Alaska, I was concerned about you. So glad to see that you are okay. Not sure how close you are to Anchorage. Have a great week!

      Those storms hit from the Kenai Peninsula up past Anchorage, Fairbanks and across the Brooks Range to the North Slope, but they passed well to the west of them! They hit their old place, though! Another big storm apparently coming our way on Wednesday....

      I think they have a mountain range dividing them from that area of Alaska so its drier.

    New tools for new projects. Love it, because you know you're going to get a lot of use out of them over the coming years.
    Really liked the idea of you making the brackets yourself. More welding/fabricating practice for future projects.
    Great team work.

    Fantastic. Just a thought. Since you can mill your own lumber, so other than additional time, why not make the roof slope steeper to aid snow sliding off. However you build it sure it will be perfect. As always you two do more in one day than most do in a month. Be safe. Till next time..
