talkSPORT's Cricket editor and presenter Jon Norman sits down with the legendary David 'Bumble' Lloyd and cricket writer Jarrod Kimber to discuss all things cricket.
In today's episode, Bumble and Kimber discuss who should be the wicketkeeper for England going into the test series against West Indies and Sri Lanka this summer. Should it be Jonny Bairstow, Ben Foakes, Jamie Smith, Ollie Robinson, Rory Burns????

Ben Foakes is constantly undermined. Should be first choice wicket keeper. Ben Stokes can bowl now, so Foakes is fine batting at 7.
He’s not good enough. Amazing what playing for surrey does for you.
He’s a quality glove man but his batting is the “problem”. Bairstow for all his flaws has 12 test centuries. Not sure Foakes will get that many and he also doesn’t have that third gear with the bat to truly Bazball.
Bairstow has been playing on borrowed time for months, Foakes has never let them down
Agree Foakes has been a much better keeper but when Jonny has his day he can win you a game single-handedly. The way he batted against KKR chasing 240 in the ipl made a lot of people reconsider, until then it looked like it was over for Johnny. I do feel England might look at Ollie Robinson the wicket keeper as a potential if they want to overlook Johnny. Foakes batting style doesn’t go well with this England setup. If it was up to me, I’d back Foakes all the way in Tests.
Bairstow averaged more than Foakes in the recent series
@@LampsGaming Bairstow's dropped catches and missed stumpings in last year's Ashes hurt the team significantly more than Foakes averaging slight less with the bat.
@@NomadNamedDamon Foakes can't bat. He's average. Bairstow improved his keeping in the end during the Ashes. People are so dumb. Foakes rarely hits a fifty even in county 😀
Ollie Robinson is a better choice. (The keeper)
Foakes is the best keeper in the country by a mile
He’s also never let us down with the bat while his batting prowess is constantly held against him I believe his average as a keeper is as good if not better than jbs
He wasn’t even the best keeper in London until this year when John Simpson went to Sussex.
If you can't bat with a high strike rate it don't mean ish
in the world
And a walking wicket
The terms on which Bairstow was picked was that our batting was lacking. Brook has now arrived, Crawley and Duckett have now made the opening more secure and he is no longer necessary. It's as simple as that. If they're dropping Anderson on the idea that we need to look forward we need to drop Bairstow too. How Foakes does not slot in is beyond me
absolutely right
Bairstow dropped important catches in the Ashes which would of influenced the overall result of the series, Foakes 100%
Foakes has an average of 29, and Bairstow 36. So for the sake of 7 runs per innings Lloyd is suggesting we sack an excellent wicket keeper and substitute perhaps the worst England has ever suffered.
Bairstow will get a hundred along the line, smash a few quick 50s
How many runs does a dropped catch cost in runs v 7 runs less per innings ,its not hard for most ,Yorkshire man votes for other even though he has peaked a while back,
@@scottmacd31 you want to bet on that? ,I've checked runs scored last ten tests and not much between them,Bairstow is a good man but not the cricketer he was n9w.
Bairstow never plays for the team. He's a second rate Kevin Pietersen
@@nicholasrenals9677 Are you calling David Lloyd a Yorkshireman?
The overall Test average for wicketkeepers over the last 10 years in 32.87.
The Australian average is 27.73, with only ONE hundred in 99 Tests, 151 innings!
Looking at trends over time, Foakes outperforms our main rival with the bat, therefore.
We expect too much from keepers. It’s a hang-over from Gilchrist. Averaging roughly 29-36 and being highly competent with the gloves is world class.
Misleading stats. Carey's an excellent batter. He has a lower average than he should have due to him coming at a point where Australia are already 300 up and need quick runs. You've also got Rishabh Pant from India who's of the Gilchrist mould
@@Volatik2006mate be honest he’s dreadful, he looked worse in England than pope trying to play spin
@@Mark-sg2ri I would be worse too if I had an entire country after me for following the rules. He was fine in the WTC final against India
@@Volatik2006 I agree with you. I really rate Carey. He’s an excellent keeper too.
I firmly believe you need to pick a specialist keeper and not a batsman that is just 'adequate' behind the stumps. A specialist keeper improves the standard of fielding and lifts the morale of the bowlers.
And literally gets wickets, especially for spinners. Good gloverwork close in gets those stumpings and catches that someone like Bairstow will not.
Simple. Best wicketkeeper plays the position. Foakes.
Always play your best keeper.Ben Foakes is our best keeper in all conditions. Very solid & secure at 7 & can bat with the tail. Didn't ben stokes say last year that Foakes is world class?
If I was Foakes at this point, I'd just stick two fingers up the England test team and tell them to jog on and just focus on county cricket. The mistreatment is bang out of order
I agree. He's been treated so poorly which I suspect is cos he's not Stokesy's mate. Foakes would be right at this point to lobby all of the top t20 teams around the world and say, "Look, if you want an impeccable keeper who can bat down the order, I'm available. Give me a decent pay day and I'm yours. " Go around the world doing that for a few years and stick two fingers up, as you say, to the delusional bazzballers.
Woakes has made himself not available due to a bereavement.
@@christianbarrow2568 your point being ? What's Woakes got to do with Ben Foakes ?
@@chriswood4 misread the comment 😂
@@christianbarrow2568 fair does mate 😅
If you want an established gun batter with decent gloves, call up Salt or bring Butler back. If you want the best keeper going, go with Foakes. If you want an up-and-comer who could excel in the future with bat and gloves, pick Robinson or Smith. None of the potential scenarios call for Bairstow..
It’s batsman
@@TRUc972 You’re a battyman.
I'm so sick of this trend of picking batsman who can keep a little bit, as the test wicketkeeper. All those dropped catches and missed stumpings for what, an extra 10-15 runs at number 7? Not worth it, Ben Foakes should play.
Stats say Bairstow takes 96% of the catches and stumpings offered, Foakes 97%. Thats all the difference is between an 'adequate' keeper and a 'class' one. Also Foakes drops plenty as well.
Foakes is a good batsman and a brilliant keeper.
It’s obviously Foakes with the gloves. obviously.
Bairstow for an elite athlete needs to lose a lot timber to keep wicket, so heavy on his feet!
Really good line up this. Hope there’ll be more.
Where can i watch the full discussion?
Is it possible to watch the whole conversation somewhere?
Seeing Jamie Smith this Spring is making me salivate at the prospect of him in the Test side in the Summer.
We need a move on from pope, bairstow. I would play Smith eyes closed. Build for that ashes now
Smith does have Bairstow's batting aggression and he learned his wicket keeping craft under Foakes.
Please pick YJB. The Aussie crowds are salivating.
talkSPORT Cricket, I really enjoyed watching this, so I hit the like button!
I'm with Kimber - Rory's interpretive dance routines at the crease entranced and delighted Australia. There was unrestrained joy in the crowd when he came out to bat.
Foakes may not have the most impressive average however he's a great keeper, will actually catch the ball thus saving runs that way. Plus if Bairstow still plays (at 6) his batting average increases greatly. Win, win.
How can you possibly pick Bairstow as keeper after the Ashes last year? He was an absolute liability with the gloves that series.
Love this content, all the clips are brilliant
Bairstow must be history, he’s no longer consistent enough to hold down a batting place. And he’s become a slogger he cannot occupy the crease in difficult times !
rob key needs to be kicked out, the idea that you can play test cricket without county championship is just weird
The difference between Bairstow and Foakes batting average is about 7. And during the ashes his average (23) was below Foakes’ overall average of 29. I’d go with Foakes, as his superior glove work will make up for those runs in my opinion.
talkSPORT Cricket, This is fantastic! I subscribed right away!
Been loving the "Friend of the show" 😂
I cannot wait for English cricket's love affair with Bairstow to be over. Never seen a more selfish player (KP aside)
"He responds to a challenge" - people only question him when he stinks the place out averaging 20, then throws a tantrum when he gets dropped
Yeah bairstow is a muppet really not what England need in the long term
nah hes class, match winner on his day
@@cricketstation2004 on his day is exactly the problem. Does nothing for months, throws a tantrum when he gets dropped then decides to play properly
Yea people like you are so good and quick to have a go at Bairstow when you have probably never kept wicket In your entire life, let along played cricket even at club level.
Why not talk more about who you would rather have rather that just criticising all the time.
@@flatbat8571 true but i personally like his batting a lot, hits the ball cleanly, hope he finds that 2022 form again
It amazes me that Ollie Pope is not more often spoken of in this capacity. Pope is a "proper" wicketkeeper. He has kept wicket for England more than once when injury situations have arisen, and is absolutely not a "batsman in wicketkeeping gloves" in a stand-in capacity. He's a REALLY GOOD wicketkeeper, was trained and developed as such, and only fell out of use because his county has such a plethora of talent. Yes, of course, Ben Foakes is the best wicketkeeper in the country and if you're going to pick the best, you pick him. But if it is a requirement that the wicketkeeper must be an international class batsman in his own right, then in my view Pope is right up there with anyone else you might consider, and he's going to be in the team anyway.
Bairstow is an average keeper that is no where near international test standard.
Foakes is the best gloveman on the planet and had test tons. He deserves his place.
Personally would love to see either Ollie Robinson (the Durham one) or maybe even Jamie Smith. Sure Foakes is probably the best keeper in the world but his batting just hasn't been good enough even in the county championship. Either of those two picks would be good choices, especially in terms of batting, and would both be real picks for the future.
The stats about Bairstow having 12 centuries as wicketkeeper are misleading. It depends whether England batted first or second. If England bat first and Bairstow scores a century then its irrelevant because he wont have been tired out from wicket keeping yet. Its only if he scores a century after having kept wicket that you can say yes he is a good wicketkeeper/batsman.
Joe Clarke- 3 100s already this season keeping as well. Never mentioned persona non grata still.
Rightly so, I wouldn't want to sit next to him
Didn't score a single 50 in India, had an abysmal world cup, and his keeping in the Ashes was lousy. Time to move on from Bluey. Foakes kept superbly and didnt deserve to be dropped for a tubby has-been.
Other than Begging Jos Buttler to come back into the fold, your always gonna lose something when selecting a WK. Be nice to give one of the young lads a go (Rew/Smith/Robinson) as they are the future
Worst of the lot 😂 had his chances, lots of them
Buttler LOL. Even worse keeper than Bairstow, tried and a complete failure with the bat. No thank you, stick to the hit and giggle stuff.
Best keeper is Foakes by a country mile, and his batting hasn’t been poor, certainly not poor enough to warrant a dropping. If selectors are so worried about the batting then look to county for a strong wicketkeeper batsman like Smith or Rew or Robinson. Bairstows time is passed and with hindsight he should never have been selected for the Ashes
england is kinda ungrateful, if some other country player performed the way bairstow did in tests 2022-23 they would've been regarded as some legend by now, those kncoks vs NZ, India and 99 vs aus just too good
All bumble's statement says to me is that there is very little faith in the specialist batsmen making runs and staying out in the field
You need Foakes because you're going to have an inexperienced bowling attack and you need your best keeper to take the difficult chances and keep things tidy if the bowlers get nervous and start spraying it down the legside. Alec Stewart didn't balance the side because he was an opener who didn't like hanging around all day waiting to come in and his figures at 7 are much worse than his average when he opened.
I don't know about WK but English bowling line up must have
Wood,Pots,Tongue and Woakes
Tongue's injured again.
Spot on Rory Burns has kept before ! 🤣he was actually pretty good
Only got into the team because of his mate Joe root
It is disgusting the way they treat Foakes he is easily worth his place in the team
England have a long history of not picking their best wicket keeper, weird how each generation takes on the tradition
Why isn’t wicketkeeper seen as an attacking position? Taking wickets is the most important part of test cricket surely!
Ollie Robinson or Jamie Smith. Both look big talents. Foakes hasn’t done the business, and he’s no spring chicken really. I think it’s time to back one of those two to become our Gilchrist.
If Foakes gets dropped and Bairstow doesn't that's a joke. Bairstow has hardly had a good test innings since his injury. Yes Foakes isn't very Bazball but he's useful for building partnerships with the more aggressive batters.
In terms of new blood, Ollie Robinson from Durham has had a great County season, he's surely worth a mention as WK-bat?
Aggressive batsmen. They are men. Call them as such.
Time to try Olly Robinson while there's a couple of lower-key series....is Bairstow really the future?
They need atleast one sensible batsman Foakes should be giv3n another chance
People commenting on here fundamentally misunderstand how this England team are trying to play, I even see people stating batting averages! This team doesn’t care about averages! they care about run rate, foakes doesn’t add anywhere near enough with the bat, it’s not the 1990’s, modern cricket has passed most of you by.
Top 6 Batsmen completely stink in last series. Bumbles solution, drop the wicketkeeper. 😅😅😅😅😅
Foakes for me. He’s an excellent bat
Foakes is by a mile the best keeper
Look at the statistics of Ashes series won and lost in Australia with or without a specialist keeper. I think it will show that England sides do better with a specialist keeper. Fine margins wins series and the odd chance missed, or taken by the keeper can have significant consequences. And Foakes does not embarrass himself with the bat. Foakes should keep. It’s a bit like not picking the best seamer because he is not a good batter.
Most recent England series wins against Australia:
2015 (in England) - Buttler - out and out specialist batsman, worse keeper than even Bairstow.
2013 (England) - Prior - exceptional batsman who was an OK keeper, kept several world class specialist keepers out of the squad.
2010 (Australia) - Prior again.
2009 (England) - Prior again.
2005 (England) - Jones - another batsman who could keep, in the team more for his batting.
1986 (Australia) - Richards - picked over the specialist keeper French as he was a better bat.
Barstow's wicket keeping cost the ashes
i think Bairstow has passed his peak as a keeper and as a fielder and his test batting is open to question now.... if someone like Robinson is considered a better bet for the balance of the team but i think you can rely on Foakes to average in the 25-30 bracket whereas Bairstow will be somewhere between 30-40 depending on how big he goes the couple of times he goes past fifty. Foakes's keeping IS worth 20-30 runs an innings and Bairstow's keeping is as likely to cost you runs as save them.
If england really want to look to the future as with anderson's retirement then they have to start putting plans in place now and instead of just persisting with the oldies until they retire and then expecting the youngsters to perform miracles straight away when they've retired they need to bring them through now to play alongside the root's and stokes's etc in order to gain experience and grounding
Also if any player in county cricket over 30 is considered to old to get picked then the same has to apply to the current test players. Not when they are playing well, But when players over 30 are out of form it shouldn't be considered a shock if they get dropped for 25-30 year olds such as a joe Clarke or ollie robinson
England didn't regain the Ashes because of Johnny Bairstows wicketkeeping.
Barstow’s hopeless keeping cost us the Ashes. His recent batting scores are marginally better than Foakes and Foakes have marshalled the tail very well in the past.
Bairstow isn’t the same player since a broken leg
Rew maybe bit early for him but good player catches win matches and foakes is the best we have at it
Bairstow's best days are behind him, since that broken leg, not been the same bloke.
Who were those 12 centuries against?
Bairstow will do what he always does. Unjustifiably keeps his place, underperforms then just when it's time to get rid of him, he scores a last minute century.
David Lloyd is a parody of himself now
Bairstow shouldn't be near the XI
He’s now on a par with Trueman. Mad as a bottle of chips.
also why is there such a fascination in this country with the wicketkeeper batting at 7? There's no need for them to bat there if they are better than that
James Rew
/end of debate
The experts' choice is counterintuitive; on current form Foakes will outscore Bairstow and he is the better keeper by a country mile!
Foakes is the better keeper. However I think Phil Salt is a dark horse to make his debut against West Indies.
As for his ambition to play test cricket, well, this is why he moved to Lancashire in the 1st place.
Foakes and then in due course Rew
Bairstow is not good enough and let's be honest he is struggling with both bat and being a wicketkeeper, The real trouble is central contracts has been handed out and Bairstow is one of them
Never understood the policy of poor batting drop the wicket keeper
Some people say "keeping wicket" and others say "keeping wickets". Which one is correct?
James rew
Past history does not mean you are the best at the present time.
You play your BEST wicketkeeper every time. Will save you runs every innings.
Both Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope have played as wicket keepers...
The maths is clear. Foakes average 30+. Bairstow might average 35+? You're saying in a test Foakes won't buy you 10 runs / Bairstow won't lose you 10 runs? One dolly drop from Bairstow and the maths doesn't add up for the whole series.
Cricket is a simple game of maths in many ways
Time to move on from Bairstow now
Ben Foakes is one of the most overrated players in England, he’s not an international standard batsman at 7 as he is a one dimensional batsman, and his keeping is dramatically overblown. Bairstow is finished too, time for Robinson and Rew to be given opportunities
So bumble's advise to bairstow on playing bumrah is to hope that he gets injured? Lol
bairstow should never wicket keep again
Foakes, for god sake pick the best wicket keeper
Definitely Bairstow.
Just one Question which is on my mind. Only one.
" WHY NOT BUTLER/SALT? "
foakes is one of the most disrespected keepers of all time
Ben foster should be the first choice wk
wrong wicket keetper🤣 long time retired but was a worldy too
Ben Foster is a goalkeeper. He was probably thinking of Foakes. You must be thinking about Jamie Foster.
@@Sensabaugh James foster who was a really good wicket keeper
The answer is Foakes. Bairstow couldn't catch a cold it cost England the ashes.
Is David Lloyd having a laugh? I thought Foakes keeping ability had closed this argument moths ago.
Time to say bye for bairstow in tests. Foakes is the best
jonny is a match winner...
Has Butler retired from test?
No. But I think he is happy to never play tests again.
Phil Salt or Bairstow, both have kept in IPL and are in good keeping form. If both of them are playing then Phil Salt, as Bairstow has experience fielding as well.
Bairstow is past his peak for me. He can be great but time for a change and some fresh blood
Jamie Smith not in contention at all then?
His boss at Surrey, Alec Stewart, said last week he thinks Smith’s initial route into the England side will be as a batter. He didn’t elaborate further.
Only England would have the best wicket keeper in the world available for selection and not pick him
Defo not suggesting this. Ollie pope has done it in Pakistan...mm
Iron gloves bairstow.. ? Really.
