Pretty poor that not just 1 but all 3 of them got the name wrong, of someone who's played one of the greatest innings in test cricket.. these guys are meant to be well researched, but I suppose they just read the news the next day about Kusal's innings and can't be bothered to register the name.

@KingsMan-tk1uz England home tests definitely don't lose money. Tickets are quite expensive and tv ratings quite high. Indians need to look at tv footage of their home tests in the past. Even only 20 years ago at somewhere like Eden Gardens they could get a packed stadium. 40 Years ago Ranji Trophy finals used to get packed stadiums. There's a trend amongst younger generations to pretend that Indians have never liked test cricket, this was not always the case.

Talking about 20 years prior test cricket was the only option other than Odis. There was no T20 cricket back then. If we Let the free market decide, T20 cricket is the best currently.
Most importantly only 3 nations cant be playing test cricket. What about others. No other nation actually makes any money from Test.
As someone who loves test cricket, there are some valid points here. Last year, New Zealand beat England by 1 run after being forced to follow on. But because this match was played in New Zealand everyone has forgotten the match.

Some fellas talking about 3/4 days Test cricket- 40 overs ODI format is all rubbish because if this changes implemented then after a while this fellas will say 'test cricket of two days ' and 'ODI format is irrelevant so stop it '- whare will it stop!
Every sport has their own spectators. Cricket fans will watch cricket and by cricket I meant the real game/ format. Who doesn't develop their taste according to this sport _ they can/should move on from cricket- no problem in it.
Bottom eight test nations should distribute some percentage of tickets to government school's students》 hope BCCI will take this sort of step in Indian stadiums for the real format.

Dk man.. I get the real test of grit and perseverance part but 5 days are a lot for a match
I would not allow batsmen to use helmets, keep the 2 bouncer per over rule. This will equalize batting and bowling. A younger audience would love to see batsmen getting hit and some blood wouldn't be so bad. MMA and F1 draws huge audiences For many decades batsmen batted with caps against bowlers just as fast if not faster. Tyson, Lillee, Thompson,Wes Hall, Fred Trueman, Mike Proctor and they also played on uncovered pitches for a while. Why has no one suggested this? It will revive test cricket I think and has for school and other levels different balls could be used that would be less harmful

Cricket has seen more death than mma . Mma happens to be my favorite to watch but doesn't have a leather ball which could kill you on the spot . I have watched test matches of all teams. The 2018-19 BGT, Headingly, Kushal mendis, BGT 2020. India tour of England 2021. West indies tour of Australia last year. England tour of India this. I remember vividly every event tgat happened in those tests. But can't even remember any white ball games before 2024
you have a lot of time on your hands.. not everyone has that and even if they have, they have better things to do..

A cricketer is primarily judged based on their test career.

Try expanding the game with test cricket? Not possible.
Try to fill crowds for test matches except India, Australia, England? Not possible.
Try running test cricket on its own financially? Not possible. Even India has to compensate for test cricket from money earned through other formats.
Try to pay cricketers on par with other international sports without taking any money out of earnings from T20 cricket?
Not possible.
Ask the broadcasters will they pay more for a 1 test match than a 3 match t20 or even Odi series? They won't.
Ask West Indies, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh etc about whether a test match is actually financially profitable for them. It isn't for most cricket boards.

If a format is loss making you can pretty much say that it isnt much popular, and those who say that test cricket is real cricket are either very small in number or Are only mouth works that don't aren't really committed. The truth is
Most people that really love test cricket actually follow the score most of the time. Is it possible to watch every ball for a majority of people on working days. It's not. Think about the broadcaster then. T20 matches even on working days are no issue because they are scheduled at evening/night.

As a person recently immigrated to Australia from India, I can see the importance given for test cricket by people here. They just love the summer when some country tours here.
The Boxing Day test in Melbourne huge just huge. Last year it was Pakistan and it has got good audience everywhere, even though matches ended one sided. This year will be a blockbuster summer here as India visits and I have already booked for Boxing Day through pre sale in MCG. Ashes and recent India series will go another level here in Australia. Last year I was sitting next to man living in the countryside 3 hrs far from Melbourne who never missed any Boxing Day test in his last 30 years. That’s the level of passion here some fans give for summer tests cricket. Put some sunscreen on, have some beer and fish and chips and watching a Boxing Day test - I got that feel straight away.
I have went for a big bash game. Conducted in a very entertaining way. Lot of DJ, fireworks. I can clearly see the crowd difference. More young kids, casual fans. Different but very necessary for the game.
I am sure these 2 will survive. Test and T20 is the future. I enjoyed Odi World Cup but I can’t see a future. May be I am wrong.
Great comment. I’m a US Cricket fan who’s followed the sport off and on for a few years, got to finally see my first both professional and international match today - Ireland vs Canada at the T20 World Cup. It wasn’t particularly competitive, but it was a load of fun. Cricket isn’t my top sport, but it is fascinating and engaging to me. I would love to go to a day of Test Cricket in Australia, India or England at some point in my life.
@@wyattmund9286 It’s great mate. As you said the Ashes or Border-Gavaskar series will be your best bet. You will enjoy it for sure. If you have only one day to give for the match I will recommend you 3 rd or 2nd day. Most probably you can see both teams batting and bowling. 3 rd day is called as ‘moving day’ and most like the decisive turn happens.
ODI is boring AF
Tests definitely have the low moments but for me the ashes last year showed why it’s the best. It’s more like a tv drama than a sport, it’s all about storylines, form and outrageous moments. Even Carey getting a hair cut (was national news. As a massive football fan there’s nothing like it.

I'm gonna speak from a Bangladeshi point of view since I am one.
There just needs to be more day night test matches. People will fill out stadiums for televised cricket on any holiday. So, if you can check out the cricket after work hours, people will obviously come on weekdays.
And the under lights aesthetic is what we have been brought up on. We need more of that.
And above everything else, we need the same number of matches for teams in WTC cycle and ensure that everyone participating play everyone.
That is the major issue. If players never get the chance to play against quality sides then they will never improve for generations and the gap between nations won't bridge.
And if there are more skilled sides then obviously the games will be more interesting.

And by the way, no cricket match is hooking me on for it's entire duration. I'm gonna watch parts of it no matter the format. So this incessant whining about Tests are dying needs to stop. And they should try to fix the problems at present rather than create new ones in the name of reinvention.
Test cricket is the pinnacle of cricket and should take priority over any other part of the game

Test cricket has its loyal customers and they will be there till it is exciting and open to all nations. Best is a matter of personal choice but obviously if you are asking what is best in the world, you would obviously have to see how many people watch Fantasy cricket, T20 Cricket and see that it is better. Now, don't cry out saying that it is not about quantity but quality because again for you the contest between two specific teams or specific moments in the test cricket game would be quality, but for T20 fans the moments of quality that they define are different. People are equal and their opinions are equal and anyone in today's world thinks otherwise, is just a bigot and is actually afraid inside their mind to accept the truth.

@@CricketEngland you are talking about England v Australia, yes the crowds are full. England still pulls decent crowd for test Matches. In Australia only England and India matches attract decent crowds. Other than look at recent South Africa, Pakistan or West Indies tours of Australia. In India, Test Matches are able to manage less than half capacity crowds for most series. Other than this three nations, no other board actually makes any money from test cricket. The crowd can be counted on fingertips.
So if only 3 nations playing with each other is the only time when Test cricket makes any profit, you can say that it is in pretty bad health.
If you stop subsidizing test cricket with money earned from other formats, cricketers will earn less than half the money.
Agree it or not, Test cricket is only surviving because of T20 cricket. On its own, its revenue is far too low.
You can not survive for 2 years from the money earned through ashes or bgt for two years if all other test matches that you play lose money.
"A lot of rubbish test cricket played". After all the rubbish T20 internationals and domestics since 20 years. I remember every single test i watched or followed or even ODIs. No T20 sticks in my mind even though its a short game. Because its stupid. Simply put, T20s are a stupid format with a low ceiling.
Tests are simply incredible. I can follow it each match like a TV show over 4 or 5 days. So much action.
T20s are like a sitcom episode of a dull show.
4 day test matches will probably cause more draws, it's hard enough getting a result in 450 overs sometimes when the pitches are so dead, let alone 400 overs. And teams that are completely out of it will find it easier to block out for a draw because they'll have less overs to survive.
Also 100 overs in a day is only really achievable in England, the daylight hours won't allow that in the subcontinent and the Carribean

I hate T20s because of how short they are. I can miss a game simply by getting stuck in traffic. Tests are an event. A weekly event with something everyday. Like a TV show, it could have some dull episodes but the season (each test), has soooooo many narratives and you can write for days after. T20s are similar to street matches. Who cares about them?
Tests are top tier and define a player.
Narine is nobody compared to Ashwin.

On the point of Headingly and South Africa vs Sri Lanka Series, there was another match Between India vs Australia, Rishabh Pant single handedly Drew the test match in Sydney, and that led to an amazing 4th test match at Gaba, its all about these moments people remember.
How often are T20 games remembered?
Definitely not overrated, most cricket fans love it for all the reasons listed here and in the video. Unfortunately however, it is largely becoming a 3-nation sport. So really, you have test cricket that's thriving and healthy among the big 3, and test cricket outside the big-3 that is slowly fading.
Even having these discussions/debates help in the slow-poisoning of test cricket

I remember every Pakistan test victory in the past 10 years (especially the away ones), i Don't have a clue about the gazillion t20's we have played in the past few years except the ones in the 2022 world cup and a few PSL finals.

I don't get the starting argument. That's just the nature of sports isn't it? Every sport is like that. In any EPL season, there are SOO many dull games, it's not even funny. Not to mention all the mismatches and "dead rubbers". That doesn't mean football is bad or boring. That's how all of sport works.
T20 is all that will remain, it is simply inevitable

The schedule of test cricket is essentially akin to bilateral international friendly matches. The powerful nations controls how many games are played and against whom. If this is what pinnacle looks like then we are on a plain

This is a good point, there are some classic ODI matches but not a overall series. E.g. india vs australia Desert storm in Sharjah but no one remembers the other matches in the series.

People don't realise the popularity of test cricket. On Cricket Australia's RUclips channel, the top 10 most viewed videos include many clips and highlights of test cricket. So, it's an absolutely essential format. BTW I think it was Kusal Perera not Mendis.
Test cricket is not a sport, like sport for winning or losing like of fun in other sports , it has other funs like beauty of it folding and unfolding in 5 days making it great . Cricket is lucky that we have that format in our beautiful game of cricket ❤️❤️
test cricket improves the technique of players and endurance which is why they then become good T20 players and odi payers, very rare do you see it the other way round
What I find incredible is every suggestion to get people into cricket is too play shorter games, ie less cricket. So basically best way to improve the game is to show and play less of it
I don't get the push for four day tests. Firstly, it would see a return to high % of draws, and secondly, playing schedules would become more crammed with administrators and broadcasters getting even bigger pounds of flesh. Stick with five day tests, and if teams can finish them in less, well, let them have an extra day off to enjoy the country they're playing in - that would be my attitude if I was a big wig in the Players' Unions around the world.
Watching Brain Lara or ViV Richards batting in Test Cricket was just amazing. No T20 will come close
When was the last time a side bowled nore than 90 overs in a standard 6 hour day?
Unless umpires penalise time wasting in real time, 100+ overs a day is for the birds!
Therefore, no to shorter Test Matches. In fact, I'd be happy to see a 6th day to complete a minimum 450 overs for a draw.
I used to watch a lot of limited overs cricket of 40, 55 and 60 overs when it was on the BBC but then Sky bought some and the domestic schedule changed and Sunday Grandstand disappeared. Now that I have a Sky subscription I still don't watch any pyjama cricket. Innocence lost.
That Was Kushal Perrera Historic knocks(same at par like ben stockes) Against South Africa in Durban (Not Kushal Mendis ), and their were crowds inside the stadium watching that match !!!

Test cricket is the gourmet dinner to T20's order in dinner. It's not overrated it is just enjoyed by fewer people. Question is how to get more people interested in Test Match Cricket, big picture is getting money into that format of the sport so there is more than 3 dominant nations. One way is to force franchise cricket to part ways with some of the money they make from T20 leagues and invest it into various ways of growing test match and ODI cricket.
Also, the idea of changing ODI cricket to 40 overs, 2 inning T20 match sounds really cool to me. Aus domestic cricket tried the split innings in their one day cup but it was split innings, not 4 completely restarted innings.
Kimber put it brilliantly. Most sports are a battle; Test cricket is a war. The endurance required to be the better team over five days, as the ball, pitch, and weather evolve, when you can be batting or bowling (or in some cases doing both) for hours on end, is second to none. And as a fan you become so invested in a Test match watching so long, it makes the final victory/loss feel like no other sport.
Are you mad? It's the highest form of cricket. T20 is driven solely by private capital. It has had a corrupting influence on cricket, at least in India.
You can think of a test match like a good novel. It's a story. It unfolds. There are twists and turns. There are exciting moments, quiet moments. Build up. Surprise. Drama. You don't get that same level of sustained engagement in white ball. White ball is more concentrated on the ending.
Test Cricket is not overrated but people who say Test Cricket Died are 100% Overrated.

D/N 4 day Tests is the answer. Play an hour extra each day, start on Thursday & conclude on Sundays. You maximize ground attendance as well over the weekend.
Test cricket it massively over valued nor over rated. Yes it is great but no way in hell can cricket be popularized by a format that spans for upto 5 days with the possibility of no result in the end. I don't understand these gatekeepers who talk about saving cricket but at the same time demean T20 and proclaim Test cricket is THE format. If you really believe that then - do only one thing, make one stranger from your neighborhood to attend a five day test match with you, if you can't even do that then STFU and let T20 do its job.
Ok so Bumble likes his ‘day at the cricket’ in the test match format, does he really though, as a fan? When was the last time he bought a ticket? For the amount it costs to take a family, and the high probability it’s NOT going to be one of those classic days, and the quality of the experience itself - it just isn’t worth it for most people. Seeing a t20 you’re almost guaranteed to see an entertaining game and have an experience that’s similar to other sports. I think these guys forget that the fan doesn’t have the experience at a test match that they do. They don’t have a sky pass and and catering and interns getting food and drink for them. It’s too often an expensive, uneventful day of being herded around like cattle. Sorry the game has no future as a live spectator sport outside of a couple of corporate events (ie home test matches) in London.
Stop test cricket now. It’s rubbish. Let England and Australia fund and play their ashes. For rest of the world Test cricket is not sport.

Who will ever forget the 2005 ashes! we lost but I still watch highlights and the documentary on it all the time. Sport doesn't get any better

Test cricket might be the toughest team sports as far as i know. Every team sport moves in a progressive state until the result. And then there's test cricket where even if you have an upper hand, you have to start fron scratch in rhe second innings on a deteriorating pitch. Thats depressing and crazy lol
India have got test cricket (which is great), bangla are getting there and Pak,SL need to do better. There were test matches starting on Mondays and Tuesdays in the home season, need to do better. More or less every Australian home test begins on a wednesday or a thursday
I don't watch much white ball cricket. However I do watch test cricket.
Test cricket is not suppose watch on tv sets it is a game which needs to be seen on ground and its format should not be changed to 3 days because the ground that plays crucial role which will be not be there so i think it should be played very less so rarity would help to build the audiences odi and t20 can have 8 months only 2 months for test would do

Test is the Pinnacle of Cricket period.
I am a huge advocate of T20 Franchise and believe it would revolutionize the sports but never at the cost of Test Cricket. Only mis-fit is ODI.
In my personal opinion, to make Test Cricket even more exciting is by defining max over per innings. For example 120 overs per innings and Don't make it draw, if you don't reach the target you lose simple.
Another suggestion, Go for Franchise or Club Test Cricket just like County Cricket

As usual Jarrod gets it right: yes there is a lot of fluff and godawful test cricket being played, but when the stars align, and the game goes down to last day, last session, with all four results a possibility? At that point, test cricket is no longer a sport, it's transcended into some weird form of drama that makes every part of you tingle in anticipation. There is nothing like it.
I watched Kusal Mendis live. It sent shiver down my spine. I missed Stokes's effort as I was in Brazil and we were 9 wickets down at midday in brazil and could not keep my friends waiting any more.

There is similar debate or analogy in the acedemic field as well, t20s obviously get you money and but in long term test cricket is a hidden contributor for cricket in general. You can tell the same thing about Physics, Pure Math and Outer space exploration...how does it serve me? Can it give me huge monetary gain...why do it?

To say broadcaster want to move ODI and not T20, isn't really an argument that's pro test, they are both seperate formats.... I like all formats, I like test cricket because you can drop in and drop out, although usually if I drop out I miss loads. I really do think T20 is peak cricket though, behind the ashes. Anyone can beat anyone on any day in T20, but except the ashes or India vs England or India vs Australia, I really couldn't care less
Only three teams play and Test cricket is really predictable.
Anybody touring India will lose the series.
Australia will beat England at home.
1)England vs Australia in England.
2) Australia vs India in Australia.
Are only two unpredictable series to be honest.
Even India vs England in England is most likely a India victory.

since t20 cricket is in the world now if you are a truly cricket fan guys playing 50 over cricket like t20 cricket and we are not seeing close games ICC should bring international championship trophy t20 if I was ICC I will remove 50 over cricket
It's not overrated - it plain sucks. Don't have 5 days to burn on a boring draw. No one wants to watch it except England and Australia. The rest of the world wants to play and watch T20s.
Test cricket is like Bitcoin. Need a lot of energy and effort to produce one classic game. You won't always get it. 90% of the effort produces mediocre results but the remaining 10% will produce something special and memorable. It needs to be preserved for that rarity and uniqueness.
If the rules weren't so skewed in favour of batsmen, if the pitches weren't skewed so much favour of batsmen (atleast in India the biggest market), if the curators produce an even matchup between bat and ball, then every session of a test is equivalent to a T-20 match.
It's everything around Test cricket that weakens it compared to T20.
The fact that only 3 countries are profitable when it comes to hosting Tests while USA is beating Top 10 opposition in T20 is making T20 entertaining.
Not the format specifically, but the number of countries playing well and tournaments with all of them is helping T20.

Test cricket is magical, there is no question about it. 1st day opening bowlers and batsmen… getting the new ball in the evening session, spinners coming on when the ball loses its shine with a rough side. I mean come on !!
Now that there's a World Test Championship in place, Test cricket will have more relevance. Test cricket should be encouraged and prioritized in all 12 Test playing nations.
I would compare test cricket and test series to that of the NBA Playoff series. A really good test match is like a Game 7 - they've been so evenly matched that it comes down to one final game (basketball) or one final session (cricket). Most people don't remember Games 1 through 6 but they'll remember Game 7 because you don't get too many of those. Nobody will remember England's 1st innings from the Headingley game but they'll remember Ben Stokes. Test cricket's selling point is investment - that if you stick around long enough you'll get that one game that makes it worth it.
t20 is boring no mind games or setting upr a batter it's all slogging. Love Test matches and would prefer ODIs over t20 anyday.
Its all dinasours who have held on to Test Cricket. Its boring! and no one has to time to watch it, cause its boring! Even the people who claim to love it do not watch the Test match. Only 3 teams really have a proper test team the rest of the test teams is on their last legs. ITS BORING and the younger generation does not care. There is no kind of marketing you can do to entice young minds who are glued to their phones to tune in for a 5 day bore a thon
