The 10 Biggest Mosasaurs Ever

Extinct sea reptiles known as mosasaurs date back to the Jurassic period. A limestone quarry in Maastricht, on the Meuse, yielded the first fossilised remains of these creatures in 1764. Their phylum, Squamata, also includes lizards and snakes. In the earliest Late Cretaceous, there was a group of aquatic lizards called the aigialosaurs that went extinct, giving rise to the 42 recognised genera of modern-day mosasaurs. Following the extinction of the marine reptiles ichthyosaurs and pliosaurs in the final 20 million years of the Cretaceous epoch (Turonian-Maastrichtian ages), the mosasaurs rose to prominence. Approximately 66 million years ago, near the close of the Cretaceous epoch, they went extinct as a result of the K-Pg catastrophe.

Nothosaurus is related to plesiosaurs, not mosasaurs. An easy way to tell the difference is time periods, with plesiosaurs and pliosaurs existing for almost the entirety of the Mesozoic while mosasaurs only were around in the later stages of the Cretaceous
