10 Biggest Sea Dinosaurs | Prehistoric Marine Reptiles

- The earliest marine reptiles arose in the Permian period during the Paleozoic era. During the Mesozoic era, many groups of reptiles became adapted to life in the seas, including such familiar clades as the ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs (these two orders were once thought united in the group "Enaliosauria", a classification now cladistically obsolete), mosasaurs, nothosaurs, placodonts, sea turtles, thalattosaurs and thalattosuchians. After the mass extinction at the end of the Cretaceous period, marine reptiles were less numerous, but there was still a high variety of species in the early Cenozoic, such as "true" sea turtles, bothremydids, palaeophiid snakes, a few choristoderes such as Simoedosaurus and dyrosaurid crocodylomorphs. Various types of marine gavialid crocodilians remained widespread as recently as the Late Miocene. Currently, of the approximately 12,000 extant reptile species and subspecies, only about 100 are classed as marine reptiles: extant marine reptiles include marine iguanas, sea snakes, sea turtles, and saltwater crocodiles.
Some marine reptiles, such as ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, metriorhynchid thalattosuchians, and mosasaurs became so well adapted to a marine lifestyle that they were incapable of venturing onto land and gave birth in the water. Others, such as sea turtles and saltwater crocodiles, return to shore to lay their eggs. Some marine reptiles also occasionally rest and bask on land.

Just a point: none of these creatures were dinosaurs. The are Reptiles. There is a huge difference.
Dinosaurs are reptiles too, although there still aren't dinosaurs.
@@AgroAcro technically birds are dinosaurs
@@autarchyan5426 Birds are reptiles and dinosaurs.
@@AgroAcro yup
@@AgroAcroyeah
Marine reptiles are fascinating...How did they grow to be so massive and vicious?
Hard to believe that they've evolved from much smaller land reptiles with legs
The Ichthyosaur has the form of a dolphin
Simply unbelievable what evolution can do
What else is crazy is that the Blue whale is actually bigger than the Shastasaurus the Shastasaurus "only" goes up to 70 feet long while the blue whale is 100 feet.
@@WalrusWinkingthat’s just the biggest known animal

@@digitnerdhtv9662 no problem bro keep up the hard work!
They are not dinosaurs...
Keep it up 👍
You should bully the colossal squid with Kronosaurus
those are not dinosaurs. calling marine reptiles as dinosaurs is like you calling marine mammals(whales, dolphins) as primates.
when laymens do videos, they butcher jargons so often
How do they determine Shastasaurus was a suction feeder? All suction feeders today have short broad snouts, which certainly does not describe Shasta.
They're marine reptiles not dinosaurs
Most of them can be considered sea dragons
Shonisaurus was 20m long
That first one was from jarrasic park movie what kind or species is it.monusourus
THEY ARE SEA REPTILES NOT DINOSAURS
Loona The Wolf Dress as Susan Heffley

Mother Nature is awesome I love learning about dinosaurs!
It is the meggggg
They ain’t dinosaurs their marine reptiles everyones knows that
Albertonectes is nt as large as camarasaur camarasaur is huge than albertonectes
Pliosaurus was 15 meters long and 30 tons weight
15m thas god damm high but haha only 30 ton wait 30 ton..
Kronosaurus would be included in my channel I'm gonna include other dinosaurs
That's not a dinosaur.
this is missing Peru-cetus now
Perucetus is not on the list because it is a basilosaurid, meaning it is related to modern whales and not marine reptiles. Reptiles and marine mammals had very different evolutionary histories
There is not a single dinosaur that was aquatic, these are all aquatic reptiles.
@prodigyshark1204 I meant fully aquatic, I should have specified that.
@prodigyshark1204 Those are semi aquatic, and there were and are many semi aquatic dinosaur, but I didn't specify so that's on me
And there where no carnivores
whales around in the mesozoic either
in fact
there were no whales at all during the mesozoic
What?
Mosasaurus goes to number one list and is the biggest not Shastasaurus
Please research, stop denying facts just because you like the mosasaurs more
Mosasaurus was no where close to being the largest marine reptile.
@@AgroAcroThe mosasaurus was the second
@@steveprime_x Not even close.
