Maybe try "Are you looking for a Model 40, or something that shoots .40cal?" For example.
Leave it to Glock to come up with model names that don't make any sense.

One shop I went to actually got so tired of this conversation they printed out a size/model number/caliber chart just for Glocks and taped it to the counter. So the customer could pick one out off the menu and then the clerk could show it to them. Think they did the same with pictures of different size calibers of ammunition so people could see the size difference between them. Everyone starts somewhere. Gotta do what you can to help the new shooters get started off right.

The other guys in the shop got waaayyyy too technical and elitist while me, the shop manager and the one other woman that worked there took the time to work with people so it was a comfortable experience.
That's key, I've seen a lot of girls come into stores and think they know what they want because some guy let them shoot there pistol and told them it was the best, you go to hand them the pistol in stores and they can't even load/charge it. Just like the internet. There’s always a handful of people that know everything about everything, according to them of course
For those who don't understand the confusion, Glock's naming system is based off the specific model's patent number
And when people started to catch on, they brought out the "Gen"s
That's why you always do your research or you'll be confused when you go into that gun shop
Used to work at a gun range (not gun shop), I would explain in 1 sentence that the numbers don't match the caliber. This is just a skit meant for giggles.
Then I would explain the preferred carry guns. Glock 19, Glock 43X, 19X, 365XL, M&P Shield.
My point is, an honest sales person (or instructor in my case) can make the process super easy.
