Love mine. I am getting 45-50 mpg when driven at 50-60 mph in the UK with the engine you have tested. I don 't need fancy graphics to show me how to close the hatch however. I would like a gas strut for the bonnet.
They could make the whole windscreen become an infotainment screen, leaving only a small window to see the outside. Or they could install cameras and then we could see what's outside on the giant infotainment screen
We still keep our original golf mk4 running as 3rd car, the best golf ever. The concept that if you properly maintain a german car it will last forever. It is that good that I was considering keeping the GLC as main car and getting as secondary a golf GTD, unfortunately they canceled the GTD :(
Very interesting comments on the NVH issues, thank you for that. Looking forward to seeing your review of the Variant version with the more potent diesel under the bonnet. Cheers from Poland, excellent job Majchrzak 👍
I wish VW would bring back the Golf to the United States. I love the GTI, but would like to have the option for a more affordable Golf. Nice car and a great review as always.
Me too. Am considering a GTI as my next car. Would downsize the wheels and add a resonator to quiet the exhaust. I just want a comfortable Golf sized vehicle.
I would love to have a deeper insight into the DCC - you always recommend that, and I have followed that recommendation and find that it's worth it, but no clue about how it actually functions. Maybe a technical deepdive of this system next time?
picked up my 2nd mk8 Variant last week, preFL, 1.5 etsi 130hp dsg, had a 2022 1.0tsi manual (covid era, lead time for dsg was 12months+, manuals were on the lot), the etsi surprised me. I have 1.5tsi in karoq that is disengaging to neutral when you lift-off, and I thought e-tsi would do the same but will just help to keep the rolling speed longer, but it shuts of the engine and it keeps you rolling for surprisingly long distance. On parking lots it kept me at 18kmh for a full circle till I found a free spot, it is really like driving a hybrid, which has its negatives too of course, the brake pedal is completely different than on base TSI engines without the mhev, most of the time you feel like your brakes failed, you have to really press it all the way down, you also have to learn to brake earlier and generally switch your mindset to a hybrid driving, I don't know the capacity of the small battery, but it is shutting off the engine... a lot more often than I would expect it for a mhev, If they would come with this technology 15 years ago when they first started putting start-stop in cars, killing 12v batteries and starters, people would not mind it that much. But im glad you can put on coolant and oil temperature to be shown in display, so I generally keep the dsg in sport mode until the oil is at least at 80C, otherwise on short drive, even 30km, in summer, your engine may take a long time to cross 90C, and oil temperature generally in modern engines runs ideally at 95-100C, I like the eTSI, I don't like comparing manuals and automatic, I do tend to rev the engine much higher than automatic would, basically like if the dsg would be in sport mode all the time, but my average consumption on 1.0tsi 200nm 110hp manual was 5.7-6.1, on all-season tyres, on this 1.5 etsi 130hp 200Nm it's 5.1. I don't really care about the consumption, I reckon other drivers would get bigger differnce, but I like that now I don't mind start/stop to be left alone, that I produce less noise in the city, does not really make a difference in the cabin, below 90kmh you don't really know if the engine is running or not, I have to keep the rpm gauge on to actually know if the engine is shut off or not. It makes me want to buy a hybrid next time, which is weird for me to even think about it.

Hail physical buttons on the steering wheel once again, please make a comeback on the media - climate physical operations too, VW! (Also on the keys) That high-gloss pianoblack plastic piece left from the gadgets surrounding the capacitive BS lighting panel is hideous too.
It’s insane the Mk 8 Golf costs $50K in Australia when it was $30K for a Mk 7 when it came out. No one buys them anymore because no one can afford them
Does the new Golf 8.5 1.5TSI still have COD (Cylinder on demand) where it goes down to 2 cylinder mode when there is low power needed? My 7.5 Golf has that. I think it is a nice feature. I can't find it on the official Volkswagen site.
It's a small thing really but the MK7 had a cup holder sliding cover. It's nice to be able to close the cover, now there is no cover and the two cupholders are opened. in the mk8
They totally abandoned the "peoples car" approach that made them successful. They overpriced the new beetle so much it was a flop. They ruined the Passat in America with poor design and engine choices as well as overpriced. They overpriced the GTI and added all manner of electronics that the owners didnt want. They continue to make these blunders even today.
On my radar. Giving up a lease BMW 520d soon - a totally brilliant car that has been a pure joy to be with for 3 years but they are now crazy money and I am not ready for electric. I am on the motorway a lot but quite fancy a smaller /sportier practical car. Is the new Golf for me ? ( rarely carry passenger ). 150bhp tsi Match seems a good spec for me.... I know it seems a big leap but I dont need a big car anymore and am even considering the manual transmission.... 😮 Thanks for sensible opinions.
Nothing beats a manual on the open road. A crying shame that golfs are sold in many countries without a manual option. No one is scrapping their car when the clutch goes but plenty will when the dsg lunches itself
The Golf 7 was always praised for its roomy interior, especially in the rear. How come the knee room in the Golf 8 gets criticized now ? Is it smaller now than in the Golf 7 or has just the standard changed since many of the competitors have gotten more spacious ?
@@autogefuehl thanks. Last question. And what about ride quality and noise? golf has mcferson while Octavia has torsion beam. Does that feel different according to you
Hi, you know what I like about the Golf? It's the design and styling of the car, it's a bit more "conservative" when compared to other brands and direct competitors like 308, Ceed, i30 etc. it has it's own elegance. Of course there are really good alternatives from a price perspective but the Golf is the kind of car that doesn't scream "look at me, look at me" and I like that. Can you also please start the Piano Black Police similar to the Fake Exhaust Police? :D
Loved my Golf but had to switch to Tiguan as Golf was too low for my old body! Loved the way it handled even though it was small engine (2022 US version) and somewhat de-contented. Still very peppy car, such a joy to drive. Thomas here’s a shoutout to your always good looking footwear. Oh yes, and stylish glasses.
Hi Thomas! I had a Golf 5 and am now driving a 7.5. I bought a 8.5 R Line with a lot of discount 🎉 I just could not give 2000€ for matrix led lights, lights are lights, not gimmicks, you seem to find them very important 😊
Super gorgeous rear lights with that shadowing effect. Would love a car with a "bad roads" feature; here in California are roads are pretty bad now; not as bad as Brasil but definitely way worse than 10 years ago. Thin tires are a recipe for a cracked rim. Sadly, we only get the Golf R and GTI in the USA, when the plain Golf would be a much more practical product. And of course we aren't allowed to have the economical Diesel version; after the scandal VW will never import a diesel again. And of course we aren't allowed to have the more reliable manual transmission version. If you want your car to go 500k miles, a manual transmission is the best way to go. And of course we don't get the Estate (wagon) version. the US gets screwed over and over by the foreign car companies who only send us their most expensive, largest, vehicles. So we just drool over Hilux and mini Asian trucks, and the practical cars that are so abundant in Europe. So we are left with 48k avg price SUV's.
I love by GTI but the price has gone up a lot. I was looking at manual GTIs in 2018 and they were going for about 27,000. I decided to go for a M240i convertible. However, when I found out the manual was being discontinued, I decided to buy one before they were gone. I like it but it was 37,500. That's a big increase for only six years. I think it's a bit crazy the car prices now adays. I am now looking at a CLE 450 conv. but the price is crazy. I am not in a hurry but if I wait, they'll just keep rising. I have a lot to think about.
yes. The mild hybrid push system is build inside the gearbox. That is the reason that dsg gets mild hybrid but the manual does not. In the case of Ford Focus and Mazda the mild hybrid electric motor is attached to the crankshaft by pulleys so it always comes with it.
In these days I have to change my old Golf, I'm considering this new Golf 8.5 (1.5 mild hybrid) and the Honda Civic e:HEV (full hybrid), same price (with the same specs) but very different cars. Which should I choose? Which is the best?
This vehicle looks remarkable. I can confidently say that Volkswagen is starting to move in the right direction again. Unfortunately, in my country, we only get the GTI and R versions of the Golf.
What is wrong with all car manufacturers these days 20 -30 years ago you can buy a golf or Corolla and use as family car , rear seats used to have as much room as Passat but now all hatchbacks are simply two + mini two That’s insanely stupid or purposely made to push buyers for more expensive suv type cars And these huge screens , unnecessary clutter
I remember back in the day when the Golf was the affordable go to vehicle for many. Now idk who would actually buy one, at least one that is not bare bones. Those with nostalgia maybe? Anyway i would always prefer the Civic. The Civic hybrid and the Prius are the absolute kings in the segment.
Interesting...my first Golf 2 was really expensive...you had to work at least two years for it...today it is still expensive, but the average salary is at 34k/year in Germany, which means it got not more expensive at all... But it has way more Features, Assistent Systems and much much higher Security at Crashs.
Now add the average 3% to 5% Inflation for those 8 years...and the money for all the Assitant Systems...wether you like it or not...and you will end at this price point, too...but no one really pays a Golf for the Listprice...you always get a Discount or better lease it
I have a facelift golf 8 and had several pre-facelift golf 8 before. Here are my 2 cents: - The bigger display offers more functionality like shortcuts and the buttons are bigger and are easier to press when driving. Especially when using apple car play. The bigger size is also not distracting to me. Overall i'm happy with the bigger display. - The touch sliders are illuminated now. I didn't care that they weren't before, but many people complained. So, it's good that they fixed this, I guess. - The infotainment software is definitely more reliable now. I didn't notice any black screens or any other problems yet. - The illuminated logo is a real eye catcher. My sister in law even called me from her car when she was driving in front of me. She was very impressed :D I personally also think it looks really cool and not cheap or gimmicky at all. - I really like the seats. They seem more high quality. - The overall quality has increased in the facelifted golf. The prior model had some sounds coming from the gearbox or something, which was a general problem I had with all Golf 8 cars i had (i was getting a new one each six months on lease). Those sounds are now gone. - I also got a lot more for my money. I didn't pay much more, but got better seats, a headup display, better headlights, better side mirrors, etc. - The cockpit seems a bit more laggy when switching views now (definately less than 30 fps, probably less than 24 fps even). I also prefer the old UI design in the cockpit display. The new UI just looks a lot more busy now. The old UI had a much cleaner design. - I also prefer the old front bumper, but this is subjective of course. So, overall, I'm happy with the updates in the facelift Golf 8. Most of the updates are positive and I got more features for my money.
I’ve owned a mark v, vi and vii Golf. They were excellent cars. Just bought a BMW 1 Series. The infotainment screen is small and controlled by touch or a selector wheel which is far better and safer to use on the move. I don’t like big screens that look like an afterthought. I agree that the new Golf is too expensive.
VW Golf 7 won the Car of the Year with a whopping 400+ points from the jury (highest ever points if I'm not wrong). I've Golf 7. It would be very interesting if you could compare Golf 7 versus Golf 8 Facelift. For example, comparing driving comfort, noise insulation, etc.
I just upgraded from mk7 1.4tsi to mk8 1.5tsi. The mk8 is much louder, both road noise and engine. Also, there is more vibration and a less settled ride. Steering is more responsive, though.

I don't understand why are they putting all the digital B's not analog and cheap scratchy plastics in a car over 40 thousand what a ripp off
Great video and Very good presentation. I don’t like the screen placed in the middle of the new Golf car dashboard
Thanks 🙏
Thanks for this nostalgic ride with a manual gear shifted Golf!
Love mine. I am getting 45-50 mpg when driven at 50-60 mph in the UK with the engine you have tested. I don 't need fancy graphics to show me how to close the hatch however. I would like a gas strut for the bonnet.
Thanks for the feedback!
They could make the whole windscreen become an infotainment screen, leaving only a small window to see the outside. Or they could install cameras and then we could see what's outside on the giant infotainment screen
They are working on it actually. Check the new Audi A5
Golf is getting better and better and what I love about it, is that you can always count on it, in fact, you can always count on the entire VW family.
You are joking, right?
you can count on them to burn oil even after 10k km
We still keep our original golf mk4 running as 3rd car, the best golf ever. The concept that if you properly maintain a german car it will last forever. It is that good that I was considering keeping the GLC as main car and getting as secondary a golf GTD, unfortunately they canceled the GTD :(
Mk4 best Golf gen indeed
I have that golf, but stupid climate policy in Spain will forbid me from using it in 2025...🤬
How so?

What happened at 9:26, the km/h jumped from 85 to 104 and while shifting and then back again to 91 ?
Thanks for your review Thomas. Please review the GTE model ASAP. I'm eager to see that on the German autobahn.
Very interesting comments on the NVH issues, thank you for that. Looking forward to seeing your review of the Variant version with the more potent diesel under the bonnet.
Cheers from Poland, excellent job Majchrzak 👍
Thanks best greetings!
I wish VW would bring back the Golf to the United States.
I love the GTI, but would like to have the option for a more affordable Golf.
Nice car and a great review as always.
Thanks m8!
Thomas love to love you the best automotive reviewer there is 😍😍😍 too accurate too objective too realistic plz some more.
thanks so much !
picked up my 2nd mk8 Variant last week, preFL, 1.5 etsi 130hp dsg, had a 2022 1.0tsi manual (covid era, lead time for dsg was 12months+, manuals were on the lot), the etsi surprised me. It makes me want to buy a hybrid next time, which is weird for me to even think about it.
thanks for feedback !

Hail physical buttons on the steering wheel once again, please make a comeback on the media - climate physical operations too, VW! (Also on the keys) That high-gloss pianoblack plastic piece left from the gadgets surrounding the capacitive BS lighting panel is hideous too.
I wish the steering wheel was just for steering. McLaren’s approach, using toggles around the dashboard and a pure steering wheel is genius!
Waiting for SavageGeese to review the Piano black and whitelack of B58 in it. AI Jack will be disappointed…

It’s insane the Mk 8 Golf costs $50K in Australia when it was $30K for a Mk 7 when it came out. No one buys them anymore because no one can afford them
Interesting...in Germany we have record sales since this Facelift came out...they have to produce it 24h a day to be able to deliver the ordered Cars.
Does the new Golf 8.5 1.5TSI still have COD (Cylinder on demand) where it goes down to 2 cylinder mode when there is low power needed? My 7.5 Golf has that. I think it is a nice feature.
I can't find it on the official Volkswagen site.
I really hate Volkswagen Group Cup holder location in middle console . Its not comfortable(btw I have Cupra)
Indeed! The correct placement is to the right of the gear lever.
It's a small thing really but the MK7 had a cup holder sliding cover. It's nice to be able to close the cover, now there is no cover and the two cupholders are opened. in the mk8
The rear hand-holds on the boot lid have been on nearly every VW I've owned - and yet hardly anybody knows they are there or what they are for.
VW has blown more opportunities than any carmaker in history.
We want new Tucson review! :)
Decent sense of humour on the disco lights. 😅
I liked the look of the 8 but this looks even better! Timeless design.

Hi Thomas ...will the golf facelift have an alltrack version ? ...ps they fixed the design big time
I dont think so but if so, we ll keep u updated
Is the ‘bad road’ suspension the ‘heavy duty’ suspension on the options lizt
Yes
@@autogefuehlthanks. Great video again!!
Nothing beats a manual on the open road. A crying shame that golfs are sold in many countries without a manual option. No one is scrapping their car when the clutch goes but plenty will when the dsg lunches itself
I can get a CLA for this price
As long as the buttons are normal, this should be a far better car!
Nice review meet❤
The Golf 7 was always praised for its roomy interior, especially in the rear.
How come the knee room in the Golf 8 gets criticized now ?
Is it smaller now than in the Golf 7 or has just the standard changed since many of the competitors have gotten more spacious ?
Never praised the Golf hatch for knee room, it is tight

I wish the new passat had the same design as this. It looks very good. Too bad about the sound insulation.
Thomas, which one is better - Octavia 2024 Facelift or this new Golf 8.5? Thanks

Octavia offers more space for sure
But u rather have to compare it with the Golf Variant
@@autogefuehl thanks. Last question. And what about ride quality and noise? golf has mcferson while Octavia has torsion beam. Does that feel different according to you

I like your presentation's
Thank you so much! Please recommend / share our channel and our videos 🙏
Love everything about it except the tacky giant screen and lack of physical controls. If that was sorted it would be a perfect vehicle.
Oh yes, and stylish glasses.
highly appreciated my friend !
The best reliable types of golf....love it ❤
my Mk7 golf has hydraulic struts holding up the hood, they decided to cheap out with a $5 prop rod. Shame on you VW!
Hi Thomas! I had a Golf 5 and am now driving a 7.5. I bought a 8.5 R Line with a lot of discount 🎉 I just could not give 2000€ for matrix led lights, lights are lights, not gimmicks, you seem to find them very important 😊
Still happy with my VW golf 7, which cost a third of this car. 44 K USD/ EUR is insane.
Dear Thomas can you try the lowest trim level golf the most affortable.
Not only the highest.
Thank you good job perfect videos😊😊
Always trying, but test vehicles are rare in low trims!
Thanks my friend !
My first VW was $2200 included sunroof and new for that year (1965) A GAS GUAGE! No radio but otherwise a fun car from Bob Smith VW in Hollywood.
02:15 My 2005 golf had soft closing boot handle. Don’t know why they stopped doing that.
Why is this TV screwed up🤦🏿♂️
1.5 tsi mhev With dsg?
1.5 tsi with manual?

If your charging infrastructure is good…
The MK7.5 Golf still looks better than this - inside and out.
Could you please add an ASMR quality check section, while reviewing the interior part?
We do a lot of that actually! Both in the long reviews and also on our shorts socials
VW will always be my favourite brand. Love the new Golf
This vehicle looks remarkable. I can confidently say that Volkswagen is starting to move in the right direction again. Unfortunately, in my country, we only get the GTI and R versions of the Golf.
Does the Wagon have the plug-in hybrid?
Sure
What is wrong with all car manufacturers these days
20 -30 years ago you can buy a golf or Corolla and use as family car , rear seats used to have as much room as Passat but now all hatchbacks are simply two + mini two
That’s insanely stupid or purposely made to push buyers for more expensive suv type cars
And these huge screens , unnecessary clutter
You know that you have a Golf Variant right?
What? Golf 1 or 2 are smaller than a todays Polo...
What do you think about those 18" rims on this one? Not too harsh?
Depends on comfort or sportiness preferences. 18 are still ok though
Thomas Do you prefer this or the Golf 7.5 ? As 7.5 has physical buttons ?
7.5 for sure
When do we get to see an in depth review of the mk8.5 GTI?
As soon as available! Probably September
I paid $26,000 for my 2016 Golf SE and I thought that was expensive... almost $50,000 for a Golf today seems insane to me
Now add the average 3% to 5% Inflation for those 8 years...and the money for all the Assitant Systems...wether you like it or not...and you will end at this price point, too...but no one really pays a Golf for the Listprice...you always get a Discount or better lease it
The new face-lift is well worth
Hello Thomas. As usually professional test. One question: any rumors about GTD version?
Thanks 🙏 defo no GTD
Golf 7.5 still the best
why cant they make just a simple car that cost less , dont need to change the appearance of the speedometer , dont want the engine off at lights
These interiors with what looks look an iPad glued to the dashboard really
sets off my OCD. This a deal breaker for me .
Just can’t get over the headlights on the golf 8. Looks a little better now but still so ugly compared to the 7.5
Indeed
I have a facelift golf 8 and had several pre-facelift golf 8 before. Here are my 2 cents:
- The bigger display offers more functionality like shortcuts and the buttons are bigger and are easier to press when driving.
Thanks for review!
thanks for the feeback !
Will this be launched in India?
Has the internal maps improved
Anyone who owns a smartphone in 2024 isn't going to use it anyway. Google maps/Waze/Apple Maps are far superior.
it did, I had a test drive 2weeks ago, works great now
The wheels and Pale Grey interior colours on the previous model were much nicer
VW Golf 7 won the Car of the Year with a whopping 400+ points from the jury (highest ever points if I'm not wrong).
I've Golf 7.
It would be very interesting if you could compare Golf 7 versus Golf 8 Facelift.
For example, comparing driving comfort, noise insulation, etc.
I just upgraded from mk7 1.4tsi to mk8 1.5tsi. The mk8 is much louder, both road noise and engine. Also, there is more vibration and a less settled ride. Steering is more responsive, though.
@@spr0123 congrats 🎉 So you bought Mark-8 or Mark-8 Facelift?
I bought mk8, not face-lift.
MK 9 I expect no less than an oled TV replacing the infotainment screen. Let’s just go all in at this point.
It is quite a step up in silence from the previous generation anyway. Comparing prefacelift.
