      No one ever said Rob was a good vocalist. He is an entertaining front man though. Haha
      I remember seeing him when they were playing 2-3k capacity venues and he was in the crowd for at least 3 songs. He even climbed up to the balcony to join the people up there. I have only been to a handful of shows where there was that much crowd interaction.

    I remember seeing zombie opening for pantera. They had this graveyard stage set. When the intro started there were 3 coffins buried in dirt center stage. Than rob, sean & jay opened & crawled out of the coffins. They had dirt rolling off of them. When the music started & sean started head banging dust just started rolling everywhere. I've seen a lot of concerts over the years. That is by far the coolest intro I've ever seen. If you were lucky enough to see them with the graveyard stage set you know what I'm talking about. • @kmexperience
    @kmexperience 2 года назад +78

    Now I hear what’s missing (in addition to Rob’s breath). In the studio version, that synth part at the beginning plays throughout the verses. But for this live version, they either took it out because it was too hard to keep time with, or it got completely drowned out in the mix. And that leaves the mostly-one-note bass line to carry the verses.
    I remember looking forward to this performance as a 14 year-old, because White Zombie were pretty much the only metal band MTV would play during the daytime. For what it’s worth, I saw them live twice back in the day, and they were awesome both times.

    • @MrParkerman6

    • @kmexperience
      @kmexperience 2 года назад +1

      @@MrParkerman6 there are foot pedals that can play samples, and their stage crew could also have set it up to play at a certain time, so they certainly COULD have used if, just like they got it to play during the intro. But if they tried that during the verse, they’d have probably fallen off time. It’s the pratfalls of having an extra sound come in and out throughout the song.

    • @kmexperience
      @kmexperience 2 года назад +6

      It turns out that White Zombie WAS able to include that synth part during the verses when they played live (and that Rob was able to forget the lyrics): ruclips.net/video/JWM3BGQAKgQ/видео.html
      So during this MTV performance, the synth either got completely drowned out in the mix, or there was some other equipment issue. Or maybe someone forgot to bring something … like an invisible keyboardist (it happens to the best of us) 😎

Bad enough that I called friends after to make sure I heard it correctly. "Dude, was it me it did Zombie sound awful?" I think any future airings had things edited to take the out-of-sync backing track removed. And RZ being winded of course. Zombie is just one of those acts that relies on a considerable amount of post production to sound great. The arrangement, complexity, and sonic depth on his albums is second to none. But, just like hip-hop, you never actually want to see it live.

      @tongkatable I've seen him live and he was 1000/10 one of the best live performances ever, Rockstar Mayhem Tour in Tulsa. Every other band either played only a couple of songs or censored themselves because every shit/fuck (at least on the main stage) was a $5000 fine cause Oklahoma is stupid. It was right after Five Finger Death Punch walked off stage after only playing like 2.5 songs in protest. Rob Zombie finally got on stage and he yelled Fuck 13 x in a row and the entire crowd went apeshit. It was amazing, he was better live than on record. He doesn't sound good on this show, he was probably fucked up, but when I saw him live he was totally phenomenal and I was front row. You can feel the heat off the pyrotechnics, it was outdoors. Shock rock is meant for live performances. The only band that I enjoyed more live was Gwar.

      Rob is an example of a studio musician. Much like the studio rappers. They piece together decent takes to make it sound ok but as soon as they have to perform it, they flop.
      He was into samples and many many takes. Not a good idea for a metal band seeking to play live. And definitely not good if you plan on jumping around like a cheerleader.
