this song was huge on MTV rotation and radio airplay; and rightly so. Next up: Shock the Monkey. Often overlooked by RUclips reactors, it's a must hear.
Award-winning song, album and video, including MTV Video of the Year (when MTV was still playing videos 24/7). In a similar musical vein from around the same time period, check out Joe Cocker's cover of "You Can Leave Your Hat On". Great reaction, Shawn!
The innuendo of this song is typical of older blues music songs about sex, and the lyrics are loaded with phallic symbols. In addition to "sledgehammer," other references to the male member include the train, bumper cars, and the big dipper. This song was in heavy rotation on MTV. Thanks for playing this, Brotherman. Great commentary, as always.
The video for "Shock the monkey" by Peter Gabriel is pretty crazy if you want to check it out. Also Peter Gabriel did the soundtrack for the Pixar movie Wall-e
MTV New Years eve 1989/90 had polls for songs and videos. #1 song of the decade was a tie between the Eurythmics Sweet dreams, and This song. This song did win VIDEO of the decade.
Peter Gabriel is a rabbit hole you really really should tap. Many great songs by him that have stood the test of time in the anals classic progressive rock. Check out "Games Without Frontiers", and the gorgeously produced "Mercy Street" off his 'So' album. I've seen Gabriel twice live and he puts on an incredible show. Great voice, band, everything. More Peter Gabriel please!
FINALLY. A must listen and must watch. Fun to watch. A Great listen. This is a classic old-fashioned blues tune with all the sexual innuendo included. He gives us a visual 'hint' in the first few frames. Peter was never shy in his use of the double entendre. Could you get any more of them into one pop song? (but I like your naive take)
Your first time? Wonderful. I saw him on this tour - my first gig aged 16 in 1986. Also note Tony Levin on bass. Also plays with King Crimson, ABWH, on Floyd’s Momentary Lapse and much more. Brilliant song ❤
@@intothesunset3 Fantastic! And Levin is amazing. I first heard him via Peter Gabriel back in the day. The first notes on the Chapman Stick on San Jacinto played live are… well, I’m getting goosbumps. I think he always opened with that on that tour so we both saw it ❤️
This blew my art teacher at secondary schools(11-16yrs)mind that he had taped it and brought it in to school, wheeled out the tv and showed us. This was a big thing cause there was no computer tech to execute these ideas and do it another easier write a program that does it for you way
I don’t think Peter Gabriel would have minded if there was an easier way, though, considering how much time he had to spend being filmed for the animations. 😄 People generally know Nick Park for _Wallace & Gromit,_ but the chicken dance section of this music video was done by him within his first year of working at Aardman Animation.
Try his songs "Big Time" and "Shock The Monkey". Have you listened to Robert Palmer? He has two videos that are similar "Addicted To Love" and "Simply Irresistible".
Question: Is it Chauffeur Me or Show For Me? Always wondered. One of the best videos to come out of the MTV years. About a month's worth of work to make it happen.

I like the music but I don't really follow the lyrics on this one so I'm sure I missed a lot. As far as lyrics go and music both I really enjoy The Land of Confusion (which probably fits our current times pretty well too) and the video for that one is fantastic.

The hammer himself..Peter Gabriel. One of the all-time greats. Love this tune very much... 🎤🎶💓

@@elishabacon2299 And Digging in the Dirt, another great video.

Hokum blues. Peter Gabriel was a genius and that was definitely what he was going for.
Arguably the best music video ever done.

When this came out, it was a major hit. Peter Gabriel in the 80's was in a league of his own.
The late 80's ᗷOOTY ᑕᗩᒪᒪ!
Yet, so much more. ♡
This is such a groove, the rhythm section drives the song nicely.
A Time Machine back to the mid 80 s 🙌🏼

Right!? He’s so cute ❤
Shawn... The metaphor is sex. All the metaphors are sexual.
Yeah. I was hoping he'd read the lyrics, although the backstory was interesting.

Peter Gabriel in 1986 was my first gig too (aged 13). Still one of the top three concerts I've ever seen. Tony Levin is amazing.

I remember those days.. ! 😅
If you liked this, check out his song/video of "Steam" which is very underrated and underplayed.

'Steam' Peter Gabriel
I remember when SO released I bought it on cassette and wore that sucker OUT! It sounded like nobody else but had a familiarity and grove about it.

My wife now calls my ding a Ling The Sledgehammer....hahahahahaha.
Well, that’s right on point for Peter (heh heh peter) Gabriel’s intentions with the lyrics. 😉
Peter did so much for stop action and music videos.
I actually think the video distracts from the song. It is definitely interesting though.
Gabriel's take on Marvin Gaye. 😮
It's simply about sex.. don't confuse it for anything too profound... Great Great song
Thanks Shawn😊💙

Great analysis of the meaning of sledgehammer. I just thought it meant he wanted to pound his crush.
