Polo..I discovered your "first time" reactions months ago. Your comments are pure appreciation for music. (In this case, I call this classic rock genre) I was watching your reactions for "Mama" & I loved that you wanted to get down with the song! Bobbing your head just a little & trying to hold back!! Phil Collins is a master of percussion and it's just SO natural for him! I say little prayers for Phil when I think to!
Hi Mr Polo. I eemember how some of my firends tought that progressive rock was weird and all that stuff, but the short time that this genre existed, it made music that no-one had made before or after. This song 'Mama' is maybe the peak of that era. RUSH maybe the best example of progressive rock ever and they in general were even better than Genesis, but their music was so different that you juts cannot compare these two bands even though they are labeled as progressive bands. Rush wa sway heavier and in some songs closer to metal that progressive rock. But songs like 'Trees' is still a mastepiece. But some of these bands at this era where just amazing. But in this particular song Phil Collins just went over the top as the feel of his singing is so damn strong that you cannot argue about it. He gets to your skin.
Chester Thompson is one of the all-time greatest drummers. He sits in the pocket with precision then hits you with a powerful fill without doing too much, but you know he was there, then settles in again
According to Phil Collins, the song is "just about a young teenager that's got a mother fixation with a prostitute that he's just happened to have met in passing and he has such a strong feeling for her and doesn't understand why she isn't interested in him." It's a haunting, eerie, and moody song --- starkly different from all of the other pop music you'd hear on the radio in the early 80s. A real classic, it hasn't lost any of its impact 40 years later.
I just had to watch this reaction to my favorite song by Genesis. Phil gave us so much good music. It's heartbreaking to know he's not in good health. I hope he knows how many of us are so thankful for the year's he gave us his all ❤.
Our children and all future generations will never understand how lucky we were to be a kid, young adult and some older folks as well. The music, clothes, cars, and how we didn't have the worries of the world like we do today. But I can still remember how certain songs and artists voices made you feel. We had the good old days.
I saw the second show on the 83 Mama tour in Normal, IL. I was delivering pizza during the first show there and saw Horton Fieldhouse all lit up with color. The building was shaking from the keyboards and Taurus pedals. Bought a ticket for the 2nd night and was right next to the stage. Saw them a few months later in Peoria, completely different show. Varilites were amazing. Phil was one of the best frontmen and drummers I've seen.
Yes! Genesis 50 yrs of my life!.You have no idea the rabbit hole you are entering! In the cage 1 & 2 Dam wait till you see Chester and Phil on drums. 1000's of listens never gets old. They were amazing live!
Before Peter Gabriel left Genesis, Phil was doubling the lead vocal on a lot of their stuff, which is why the sound didn't change all that much once Phil was the only voice.
He is the kind of performer that just does it to have fun, which equals relaxation because there is zero internal pressure to be "good" or "better"... just enjoying the crowd and his bandmates. The best are always like this. Funny fact: "bandmates" autocorrected to "baldness". Maybe he enjoyed that, too, idk.

I saw Genesis in the early 90s and when Collins sung Mama's sinister vocal he leaned over this green floor light on the stage which made his performance even more sinister with the green light shining up on his face.
Hello Polo, I was 14 years old in 1983 and enjoyed this great time of music. Back then, people went to concerts even if it cost them a lot. I've seen some of the great Ones live... I still get goosebumps, it's priceless.
I turned 15 in 1983 and it was a super turbulent time in my life as my father was divorcing my mother… Music kept me alive back then and Genesis was definitely near the top of the list of my favorite artists of the day. Listening to Phil singing brings me instantly back to a wonderful road trip I took with my friend and her family to the mountains in California when I so desperately needed a respite. Genesis with Peter Gabriel on lead vocals is very different than Genesis with Phil on lead vocals.... Phil is a great performer I have seen him in concert a couple of times. Genesis ABACAB is a good tune also …. Thanks for playing this I haven’t heard it in along time …🇺🇸👊🏼👊🏼
That's the brilliance of Chester Thompson on drums. He can play powerfully in the pocket without flash, and then later in the set have a drum duet with Phil where he really had a chance to shine. Both of them, really!
Genesis came to Orlando in 1987 and sold out the Citrus Bowl in less than 20 minutes. This was before the Internet, of course. You can't overestimate how influential they were in the 80s.
*Dude, they sold out four consecutive nights at the 80,000-capacity Wembley Stadium on the tour in 1987. It was a record at the time and only bettered by Michael Jackson five years later.*
Incredible Drum DUET w/Phil & Chester Thompson from their “1987 Invincible Touch Tour at Wembley Stadium.” The instrumental/medley they go into directly after is unreal as well with amazing light show. Well worth watching. 👍🥂
The studio version... always listen to the recording of a song first, especially if you've never the heard the song before. That way you hear it like we heard it and fell in love with it. Also there's usually something awsome in the studio version that may not be replicated live.
Polo, Phil rarely gets the vocal credit he deserves... I mean, he had to go up against the likes of Freddie Mercury, Ronnie James Dio and so many other greats in the 80s, but honestly the studio version of MaMa is some major vocal excellence! If you liked this live version, then check out the studio version. When he sings "my EYES are burning mama...", you swear the dude must have blown his own head off by hitting that power note.
Love this song! Great reaction! Imagine sitting the middle of a room with with a really good and powerful stereo with multiple speakers and such listening to this powerful song for almost 7 minutes. Stunning. ❤❤❤ Supposedly, here’s the explanation of Phill’s “laugh”: “the inspiration for the laugh came from rap music pioneer Grandmaster Flash's song ‘The Message’”.
I bought their album on cassette when it came out! I played the livin' iron oxide off of that mylar cassette tape! It was the one with the yellow puzzle pieces on the cover. It was their 12th release simply called "Genesis". I was then fortunate enough to see them on tour that same year at a place I'm not sure I remember, but it was at an arena in Tampa or Orlando or Lakeland! I saw Phil Collins come over to the stage left speakers. He sat down & sang this song from about 20' away! Good times!
Thank you so much to pick up this great song and performance. Glad you liked it. You hint about art is an attitude I do share a lot: "I mean - come one - what is this? ... You should watch the 1992 Genesis concert at Knebworth in 1992. 2 and a half hours of pure brilliance. I still have no idea how he was even standing at the end.. just unreal ❤🎉❤🎉 Home by the Sea is just other wordly.... literally
What was the biggest concert at Knebworth? The record attendance of 375,000 fans over three nights in August 2003 at the Hertfordshire England, estate has never been broken in the UK. Despite decades of performances at Knebworth Park, its current owner said the Robbie Williams shows remained the "best I've ever seen".29 Jul 2023
I saw Phil Collins sing this song in Vancouver during his 1984 Mama tour and at the point where he does the crazy haha ha section they shut down the lights on the stage and put a spotlight on just his face. It added an incredible visual and creepy dimension to the performance. He is definitely one of my top 5 performers of all time.
Hey Polo: Phil used an audio processing technique on this song (and on the famous drop on 'In the Air tonight and on many other songs too) known as Gated Reverb (invented by Peter Gabriel's sound engineer Hugh Padgham) which uses a 'gate' to cut off the end of the very loud and 'muddy' drum reverb, which produces the unique drum sound you're hearing. Gated Reverb became one of the signature sounds of 80's pop music.
You should mention that Padgham claimed he came up with gated reverb by accident while Phil Collins was recording the drums for Peter Gabriel’s song “Intruder.” It was Phil’s use of gated drums on In the Air Tonight that led to it becoming widespread throughout the 1980s.
I've been following your channel for a long time cuz I'm a Tool fan, but this is probably my favorite Genesis recording ever. Thank you so much for doing this song Polo.
One of my fav from Genesis. Saw them live in Sydney and they opened with this track. Magic. This was a great live version. But i really like the studio version. Produced by Phil.
Polo - I love the fact that you LOVE this music ! Now you have a new genre & tons of songs to listen to! Happy to see younger generations discovering this music 🎶 The BEST EVER ! 🎶🎶💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻 Never saw Genesis but saw Peter Gabriel 93’ !
I received this wonderful album from my then boyfriend for my 24th birthday in 1984, and this is one of my fav songs still of all time. The vinyl of this is safely stored away in a box in our linens press. I have heard this songs at various places around the world, in Bali Indonesia, At Yallingup beach in Western Australia, in Vanuatu by the pool at a resort and also in Melbourne numerous times. It is a stunning song!!
I am sure people have suggested this before, but check also out the Genesis - When In Rome 2007 when they played in front of half a million people at Circus Maximus. I particularly enjoy the song "In the Cage/The Cinema Show" medley there, and I am sure you would too 👌🏻
You were born in 1983, I was born in 1973. That year, Genesis made their best prog rock album ever (to me), "Selling England by the Pound". You should react to this area, with Phil, Mike and Tony, but also with Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett (Firth of Fifth, Dancing with the moonlit knight). Amazing !
Yes, you pronounced Knebworth correctly. I grew up nearby and used to play in that field! Incidentally, l was also there for that performance. It was a biggish crowd 😀😀😀😀

The original 80's video is great. Highly recommend it.
The video is awesome
Sorry, it is a crime to call this Genesis. When Gabriel left they became something different- not Genesis!

He has to be if he’s playing all Phil’s drumming when he tours with them. 😉👍🥂
Chester was amazing with Frank Zappa too and The Weather Report before working with Phil
Chester and Phill used to do drum duets when Genesis toured they were bloody brilliant
You CANNOT find bands today putting out this level of musical excellence. I challenge anyone to find one

Phil solo and with Genesis, great musicians. Live... untouchable. The best ever. Thanks for your great reaction.
He got the idea for the "ha ha" part from 'The Message' by Grandmaster Flash, which they were listening to while writing this record.

This was definitely a highlight of their concert back in the 80's! So powerful, gave me chills. Love your reaction!
My fave Genesis tracksuit, song is brilliant 💯
The studio version is awesomeness..you gotta hear the production quality. Highly recommend it.
Man, we were blessed. Today's music is just so dull in comparison.
I was there!!! Still one of the best gigs I've ever seen (& I've seen loads!!!)
Thank you Polo. ❤ xxx
I've been following your channel for a long time cuz I'm a Tool fan, but this is probably my favorite Genesis recording ever. Thank you so much for doing this song Polo.
I listened to “three sides live” on cassette tape nonstop commuting to university in the late 80s lol
One of my fav from Genesis. Saw them live in Sydney and they opened with this track. Magic. This was a great live version. But i really like the studio version. Produced by Phil.
Polo - I love the fact that you LOVE this music !
Now you have a new genre & tons of songs to listen to!
Happy to see younger generations discovering this music 🎶
The BEST EVER ! 🎶🎶💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻
Never saw Genesis but saw Peter Gabriel 93’ !
Man on the Corner- Genesis
Heard this live on first acid trip. Fell in love with thhe world.
I've loved GENESIS forever!
Grandma does love them 🥁 drums ❤✌️ Polo...
I particularly enjoy the song "In the Cage/The Cinema Show" medley there, and I am sure you would too 👌🏻
Had the pleasure to attend this concert what an amazing lineup that played
Sometimes Less is More my brother 👍. Followed this great band from the Peter Gabriel day's first time around 🎉. Such a deep deep catalogue 🎶🎵🍯🤌🙏💪🐝🍀
Amazing !
Was born in 1950! Heard some amazing music 🎵! Remembering is Cool!
Simply mesmerizing! Such exceptional vocal talent. Power, passion, and control. Love it!
I really enjoy your reactions thx
Yes, you pronounced Knebworth correctly. I grew up nearby and used to play in that field! Incidentally, l was also there for that performance. It was a biggish crowd 😀😀😀😀
