Hi Polo - I don't know if you did this one, but I think you would love it:
ruclips.net/video/pbZf8GY1-Ag/видео.html
I would say that with few exceptions Genesis' live performances are better than their studio versions.
You were blown away by the live performance. Now go listen to the studio version to have your mind blown a second time.
The whole album (especially side 1)
He definitely needs to listen to the recorded version!
The original 80's video is great. Highly recommend it.
The video is awesome
Sorry, it is a crime to call this Genesis. When Gabriel left they became something different- not Genesis!
"He's up there ripping the stage like a call center supervisor "😂
lol :)
I came here for this comment! 😉😄
@hollylooyeah me too, my favourite line!
I swear I was thinking the same thing when he said that!!!
Such a great comment!
You CANNOT find bands today putting out this level of musical excellence. I challenge anyone to find one
Ne Obliviscaris are up there
That has nothing to do with what she said. @@amarok9097
Tool.and dream theater
@@amarok9097I tried a listen I count get through it. What's a good starting song
Tool, Dream Theater and Marillion are ALL UP THERE TO THIS LEVEL
I just had to watch this reaction to my favorite song by Genesis. Phil gave us so much good music. It's heartbreaking to know he's not in good health. I hope he knows how many of us are so thankful for the year's he gave us his all ❤.
One of my favorite genesis songs.
Chester Thompson is one of the all-time greatest drummers. He sits in the pocket with precision then hits you with a powerful fill without doing too much, but you know he was there, then settles in again
He has to be if he’s playing all Phil’s drumming when he tours with them. 😉👍🥂
Phil, as always, put his haert, his body and his soul on the stage... What a beautiful human being...
Facts
You are so right.
According to Phil Collins, the song is "just about a young teenager that's got a mother fixation with a prostitute that he's just happened to have met in passing and he has such a strong feeling for her and doesn't understand why she isn't interested in him."
It's a haunting, eerie, and moody song --- starkly different from all of the other pop music you'd hear on the radio in the early 80s. A real classic, it hasn't lost any of its impact 40 years later.
Yes! Genesis 50 yrs of my life!.You have no idea the rabbit hole you are entering!
In the cage 1 & 2
Dam wait till you see Chester and Phil on drums.
1000's of listens never gets old.
They were amazing live!
Pete era too
LOVE GENESIS!!! This is one of my favs...also like HOME BY THE SEA...GREAT BAND!! ❤❤❤❤
Yes, Home By the Sea!
Yes
Genesis with Peter Gabriel on lead vocals is very different than Genesis with Phil on lead vocals.... Go listen to Cinema Show, Firth of Fifth, Carpet Crawlers, Dancing with the Moonlit Night... and of course that really long one. Then compare with Pop era Genesis when Peter was no longer around. Both eras are exceptional....
Phil did a lot of the older songs live. Did just as well on the vocals as Peter did.
My personal fav is "Squonk".
@@396Cap Yea - same with Steve Hackett when he tours solo. Genesis is one of those bands -- pure magic at every level. That era of Progressive Rock when Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, ELP, Rush... to name a few... were live and touring was the golden age of ProgRock.
Let’s Go Buffalo ! Gotta get Squonk in there too, eleventh earl of mar
Peter would have been great on Mama
another incredible Phil vocal is “I Don’t Care Anymore”!! Chills… every… time!!
Phil solo and with Genesis, great musicians. Live... untouchable. The best ever. Thanks for your great reaction.
I was there as a 20 year old...stood under the big tower in the middle...simply amazing
Genesis came to Orlando in 1987 and sold out the Citrus Bowl in less than 20 minutes. This was before the Internet, of course. You can't overestimate how influential they were in the 80s.
Overestimate?
@@robertgieseler1220 words hard
*Dude, they sold out four consecutive nights at the 80,000-capacity Wembley Stadium on the tour in 1987. It was a record at the time and only bettered by Michael Jackson five years later.*
The whole Album is the bomb.
This is hands down, the BEST reaction I've seen from you thus far. Genesis is simply amazing. I look forward to more of your videos. 🎼
I saw the second show on the 83 Mama tour in Normal, IL. I was delivering pizza during the first show there and saw Horton Fieldhouse all lit up with color. The building was shaking from the keyboards and Taurus pedals. Bought a ticket for the 2nd night and was right next to the stage. Saw them a few months later in Peoria, completely different show. Varilites were amazing. Phil was one of the best frontmen and drummers I've seen.
I forgot about this one, The album one is good. He was in Genesis, Home by the sea was a good one.
Excellent album. I had a black T-shirt of the album cover back in the day. The album released on my 21st birthday.
I agree, Home By the Sea is next, or it should be.
He got the idea for the "ha ha" part from 'The Message' by Grandmaster Flash, which they were listening to while writing this record.
Hello Polo,
I was 14 years old in 1983 and enjoyed this great time of music.
Back then, people went to concerts even if it cost them a lot.
I've seen some of the great Ones live... I still get goosebumps, it's priceless.
I know it was around this time that I first went to a Genesis concert.
I turned 15 in 1983 and it was a super turbulent time in my life as my father was divorcing my mother… Music kept me alive back then and Genesis was definitely near the top of the list of my favorite artists of the day. Listening to Phil singing brings me instantly back to a wonderful road trip I took with my friend and her family to the mountains in California when I so desperately needed a respite. Awesome voice and good times.
Same as Jon Anderson with YES He also has his own voice that you instantly recognize. Phil is an incredible Singer but most of all A Great Drummer with many signature beats.
The official video is GREAT and Phil sounds incredible. They make the meaning clear.
Polo, Phil rarely gets the vocal credit he deserves... I mean, he had to go up against the likes of Freddie Mercury, Ronnie James Dio and so many other greats in the 80s, but honestly the studio version of MaMa is some major vocal excellence! If you liked this live version, then check out the studio version. When he sings "my EYES are burning mama...", you swear the dude must have blown his own head off by hitting that power note.
😜
Ripples... beautiful song...
I forgot how great this song was! Thanks! 😊
I saw Phil years ago and he was amazing. What an experience. Great singer, drummer, and actor. 🤭😁
My favorite Genesis album is Trick of the Tail it’s ALL good cuts, the musicianship is next level!
LOL, you even mention Genisis to my brother and he breaks out singing songs from that album. Still humorous to see that even today
I was hoping you would get to his one. The drums are a heartbeat so amazing and Phil’s voice Amazing!
Phil is a great performer I have seen him in concert a couple of times. Genesis ABACAB is a good tune also …. Thanks for playing this I haven’t heard it in along time …🇺🇸👊🏼👊🏼
I've not seen this before. Great performance. Thanks
One of my favorite Genesis songs! Thanks for the incredible reaction! Was lucky to see them live back in the 80s!
Yup studio version is fire 🔥 And a must. Great reaction as usual my friend and Peace out ✌️ ☮️
This is a great live version but I think this song is one where the studio version is better. They also cut out a verse from this live version. I would definitely check it out if you get a chance.
Totally agree
Phil brings me to TEARS!
The studio version is awesomeness..you gotta hear the production quality. Highly recommend it.
I've inherited my sisters Genesis Mama album on vinyl when she died in 1985. She was only 18yo. I was 10 and desperate as she was everything for me: my older sister, my mother, my friend, my idol. The kindest and most sensible soul. I didn't speak English back then, so the title and the emotions where what helped me express my grieve. Especially the scream. Until this day, this song and Phil's voice gets me.
My heartfelt condolences 😢
I was there as a 25 year old. Oh my, Knebworth and Genesis. An experience like no other.
Our children and all future generations will never understand how lucky we were to be a kid, young adult and some older folks as well. The music, clothes, cars, and how we didn't have the worries of the world like we do today. But I can still remember how certain songs and artists voices made you feel. We had the good old days.
Studio Version!!!! Even way better.
Takes you away in his music ❣️🎵🎶
Love this song! Great reaction!
Imagine sitting the middle of a room with with a really good and powerful stereo with multiple speakers and such listening to this powerful song for almost 7 minutes. Stunning. ❤❤❤
Supposedly, here’s the explanation of Phill’s “laugh”:
“the inspiration for the laugh came from rap music pioneer Grandmaster Flash's song ‘The Message’”.
Grandma does love them 🥁 drums ❤✌️ Polo...
This was definitely a highlight of their concert back in the 80's! So powerful, gave me chills. Love your reaction!
I've been following your channel for a long time cuz I'm a Tool fan, but this is probably my favorite Genesis recording ever. Thank you so much for doing this song Polo.
Great request
Its songs like this that really makes me miss my old home stereo! And my truck
I was never a big Genisis fan, or Phil Collins but I've always loved this song since it came out.
Hey Polo: Phil used an audio processing technique on this song (and on the famous drop on 'In the Air tonight and on many other songs too) known as Gated Reverb (invented by Peter Gabriel's sound engineer Hugh Padgham) which uses a 'gate' to cut off the end of the very loud and 'muddy' drum reverb, which produces the unique drum sound you're hearing. Gated Reverb became one of the signature sounds of 80's pop music.
Heard this live on first acid trip. Fell in love with thhe world.
I saw Genesis in the early 90s and when Collins sung Mama's sinister vocal he leaned over this green floor light on the stage which made his performance even more sinister with the green light shining up on his face.
Incredible Drum DUET w/Phil & Chester Thompson from their “1987 Invincible Touch Tour at Wembley Stadium.” The instrumental/medley they go into directly after is unreal as well with amazing light show. Well worth watching. 👍🥂
I was there! The most amazing live performance I’ve ever been to ❤
Yes!!! One of the best Genesis songs ever! ❤
Sometimes Less is More my brother 👍. Followed this great band from the Peter Gabriel day's first time around 🎉. Such a deep deep catalogue 🎶🎵🍯🤌🙏💪🐝🍀
Amazing band!!! I have to go listen to "Home by the sea and 2nd home by the sea" next!!
Home By the Sea... PLEASE!
I was there!!! Still one of the best gigs I've ever seen (& I've seen loads!!!)
Thank you Polo. ❤ xxx
One of my fav from Genesis. Saw them live in Sydney and they opened with this track. Magic. This was a great live version. But i really like the studio version. Produced by Phil.
What was the biggest concert at Knebworth?
The record attendance of 375,000 fans over three nights in August 2003 at the Hertfordshire England, estate has never been broken in the UK. Despite decades of performances at Knebworth Park, its current owner said the Robbie Williams shows remained the "best I've ever seen".29 Jul 2023
Thank you so much to pick up this great song and performance. Glad you liked it.
You hint about art is an attitude I do share a lot: "I mean - come one - what is this? ... But I like it" (7:14)
The studio version is also really great. The text btw is rather disturbing (about a young guy in love or more obsessed with an older prostitute)
The 80s have their special moments in music/movies and art in general like many periods.
In almost every year you had some special artists.
Genesis have bin in the 70s very influencial and progressive and did a turn with the beginning of the 80s and became more "pop". But it was great pop music. And '83 itself was a great year.
Dont forget - in 83 Michael Jackson was in all media with Billie Jean and the whole Thriller album.
I was rather young in 83 (born 1970) but quite noticed already many of the music. The 80s were more the decade of pop music. Metal became already huge but still was in mainstream... well... to be honest literally rejected. But many bands that have been progressive made a lot pop music (e.g. Queen and many others). But it was really good music.
Another huge english pop singer was George Michael. Dont know if you already did songs by him. Probably you know some songs of him. He started with a school friend as the boy duo "Wham".
"Careless whisper" is a song of Wham/George Michael you probably heard somewhere before. Has an iconic saxophone riff and is one of the most iconic "sad" songs of the 80s.
I would suggest an early live version recorded in 1984 - its the one that is 8:30 long with fewer clicks than other live versions ("only" about 7 MIo clicks right now). The reason is a very intense intro with the saxophone. Wham was indeed not only the two guys but they had for live performances some great musicians with them.
Wham entered the scene just in 82/83 and was in the early years (as far as I could witness it) seen more like a pop group in the magazines who just were about looking good and doing videos... but they were really great musicians. And this can be seen here really well.
Wow what a show amazing .takes u away
Yes, you pronounced Knebworth correctly. I grew up nearby and used to play in that field! Incidentally, l was also there for that performance. It was a biggish crowd 😀😀😀😀
I've loved GENESIS forever!
Gets better every time you listen to it!😜
Phil, as the drummer for Genesis when Peter Gabriel was singing, was content on the drums. He never wanted to be up front. Thank God he was talked into it!
Abacab is an excellent album
Genesis w/Phil Collins is 3 of the best concerts I have ever attended! The 1st Texas Jam, and the Eagles "When hell freezes over" round out my top 5...
I was there. So many great acts: Floyd, McCartney, Page and Plant, Elton John, and loads more. Rained most of the day 😂❤😢
Yes please, do the studio version! Do it with us, please. Ty!
Knew you would love this one!
80's popmusic was a golden decade.
I grew up listening to 99% of the music you react to, I've got to say it brings back wonderful memories.
I really enjoy your reactions thx
This song is on my phone play list ❤
Chester did all the drumming in the live concerts with Phil joining when he wasn't singing. They did a drum duet at every concert, Genesis or Phil solo. Phil did all the drumming on the studio productions.
You were born in 1983, I was born in 1973. That year, Genesis made their best prog rock album ever (to me), "Selling England by the Pound". You should react to this area, with Phil, Mike and Tony, but also with Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett (Firth of Fifth, Dancing with the moonlit knight). Amazing !
Was born in 1950! Heard some amazing music 🎵! Remembering is Cool!
I bought their album on cassette when it came out! I played the livin' iron oxide off of that mylar cassette tape! It was the one with the yellow puzzle pieces on the cover. It was their 12th release simply called "Genesis". I was then fortunate enough to see them on tour that same year at a place I'm not sure I remember, but it was at an arena in Tampa or Orlando or Lakeland! I saw Phil Collins come over to the stage left speakers. He sat down & sang this song from about 20' away! Good times!
I really like Phil Collins so this ls a cool thing to see with him playing with his band Genesis
Phil always looks so relaxed, like a man who knows exactly what the job is and how to do it.
He is the kind of performer that just does it to have fun, which equals relaxation because there is zero internal pressure to be "good" or "better"... just enjoying the crowd and his bandmates. The best are always like this.
Funny fact: "bandmates" autocorrected to "baldness". Maybe he enjoyed that, too, idk.
Was an amazing concert, Silver Clef, Tears for Fears opened with Bad Mans Song, also worth a listen.
This is such a great track! ❤
Yeah love to see the studio version reaction as well. Cheers!
Genesis is like a buffet. From its various eras (prog art rock, more approachable prog rock, and pop) there is so much to choose from. For an off the beaten path song, I recommend Chamber of 32 Doors. Amazing.
You are so right. Great explanation of their transformation.
I just can’t help but associate this song (and In the Air Tonight) with Miami Vice. It just triggers me to recall the show and that time of my life whenever I hear them. I feel an “air of menace” in the lyrics and the music that I honestly don’t recall hearing from any other artist or band, which is why it was so impactful on Miami Vice and enhanced the show brilliantly.
Did you know that Phil was pushed out of his comfort zone to sing lead for Genesis after Peter Gabriel left the band? Sometimes the best singers are hiding in the background. Lucky for us some of them did go out of their comfort zone.
Like Randy Meisner for example, when he sang Take It To The Limit with The Eagles
Yes, absolutely agree.
I love Phil's drumming!
I love all great drummers from this Era!
Neil
John
Keith
Stewart
This is one of my favorites and the live was good but find the studio version too please!
I love this song so much. The original video is great.
The studio version... always listen to the recording of a song first, especially if you've never the heard the song before. That way you hear it like we heard it and fell in love with it. Also there's usually something awsome in the studio version that may not be replicated live.
Wow I have not heard this in yearssss. Forgot how good this is. 👌
Polo Reacts is the reason I am hooked on Phil and Genesis again. I listen to him almost every night now. Phil is one of the best live performers.
Someone probably said it, but that drumming comes from Phil's original drumming in the studio.
I saw Genesis on the tour for this album in the mid 80s. I think they’re one of the few bands that their live performance is pretty true to the studio. Phil’s great voice had a lot to do with that. I’d recommend you do Home By The Sea next.
It's the Silver Clef Award/foundation thing concert and lots of good bands played at this one and it was also released as a 2CD
Simply mesmerizing! Such exceptional vocal talent. Power, passion, and control. Love it!
Phil put gates on his drum sound, it was blowing ppls minds off at the time
That's Chester Thompson backing him up on drums, he took over drumming for Genesis when Phil became the lead singer
I am sure people have suggested this before, but check also out the Genesis - When In Rome 2007 when they played in front of half a million people at Circus Maximus. I particularly enjoy the song "In the Cage/The Cinema Show" medley there, and I am sure you would too 👌🏻
Polo - I love the fact that you LOVE this music !
Now you have a new genre & tons of songs to listen to!
Happy to see younger generations discovering this music 🎶
The BEST EVER ! 🎶🎶💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻
Never saw Genesis but saw Peter Gabriel 93’ !
This whole album is fire!
This song fits right in to the Miami Vice soundtrack!
