    • @marshy_moo
      @marshy_moo 4 года назад +7

      He does mixes as well, and regularly uses distortions and saturations, etc, so ST isn't that unthinkable. I noticed the absence of UAD as well, but with the classic units, WA, and other hardware clones of them, that's understandable. NI don't really hit too heavy in signal processing imo. No waves though... Hmm 🤔 not even Vocal Rider, Submarine, or Sibilance?

    • @Newerasamearea
      @Newerasamearea 3 года назад +7

      Nothing revolutionary in waves anymore (back in the day they were good...but things have moved on faster than they have) and their mandatory ecosystem is aweful. Vocalrider was good at the time but hornet do it just as well for a fraction of the price. Once legendary limiters have been surpassed by Sonnox and Weiss. Most of their emulation stuff is either snake oil or matched/bettered by cytomic, plugin alliance, UAD, Apogee. RBass is perhaps the only standout that noone else is doing as well and that is worth the hassle.
      Soundtoys do some great stuff but more for production rather than mastering which is his focus.
      UAD stuff is good but not revolutionary. Plenty of others do emulations just as well (cytomic, ssl, apogee), NI is for sounds...see point about, mastering above

    I think that plugins like Soothe and Gullfoss (as with mostly any plugin) have the POTENTIAL to do as much harm as they do good. That said, I do a majority of my mixing in the live post realm, mixing multitracks from live recordings. That can mean a lot of DI’s, handheld mics, bleed, and sometimes poorly recorded tracks... Soothe is a big new tool for me to get rid of the big problems I face in eliminating 9-12dB moving resonances due in part to proximity effect and direct recording. It is FANTASTIC for that and doesn’t seem to damage the audio character or give me phase weirdness as much as trying to keep up with 4 bands of dynamic eq. I also know other pro guys who use it with success in standard mixing environments. As always, use your ears.

    _"The best records are not being made by these types of plugins"_
    Lol, the history of music making is littered with these kinds of statements, you'll find a hundred engineers telling you what's right and what's wrong - and somewhere in a bedroom an 18 year old will knock out a track that absolutely kills, using all the 'wrong' tools . . . whenever you hear an engineer telling you the 'pros' don't use something, then it's time to start playing around with that thing, from cheap drums machines, to 303s, from low end Akai samplers to low sample-rate reverbs, from distorted guitars (which engineers spent most of the 60s telling bands were 'wrong') to the 'wrong' plugins, eventually these things find their way into mainstream music, you could jump to any point in the last 50 years to hear someone declare "The best records are not being made with types of keyboards" or "The best records are not being made with these effects" or "The best records are not mixed in the box" or"The best records are not being made with distorted vocals" or "Hey Phil, that's way too much reverb on the drums, the best records are not made like that" . . . . all these things always get overturned.
    Gullfoss doesn't 'flatten your frequency response' at all, in fact 'recover' does quite the opposite, it accentuates parts of the signal, I'd encourage people to try it out.

    Im a little surprised that you don't have some of if not all of the small bundle of the SONNEX Oxford plugs. I got hep to these guys years and years ago when they were first used over at GML and he was developing some code for them and the inflator and GML EQ and the verb are truly good. The inflator in some form has been used on every record i have tracked or mixed and for the longest time some guys were asking what or how i was accomplishing the inflator results. I kept it under my belt for many years. but that inflator is so diverse in what you will get from it in relation to how hard you hit it. check it out then old version was very good the new versions are realy like no other in what it does. and the HUI could not be any cleaner.

    DSM v3 is my new 'desert island' plugin. Compression, expansion, exciting, automatic de-essing, EQ matching, noise reduction/multiband gating.....
    After the initial learning curve, it has a very fast and intuitive interface and workflow, fairly low CPU use, and the sound quality makes me keep asking "how is this possible!?"
    Tried it as an expander/gate on a noisy guitar D.I. after capturing a profile of the noise, and wow! So much more natural than a wideband gate, and none of those weird digital artifacts from iZotope RX.

    • @ArielTavori
      @ArielTavori 4 года назад

      @@Drfresh1402 Indeed, I expect to be finding new ways to use this for many years! Auto de-essing is a 'feature' mentioned in many videos (and perhaps the manual?). It is actually just part of the natural behavior of this tool. Once you've captured a curve, the sibilance and boominess will not conform to it and will be corrected automatically like everything else. I suspect this would work miracles on a singer that keeps changing their distance to the mic!..

  • @lambd01d
    @lambd01d 3 года назад

    I use dynamic EQ all the time because you can focus on specific resonant peaks and it's more focused than a multiband compressor which will only respond to the loudest peak in the band and will turn down everything in the band rather than just the bad bit. Tokyo Dawn Nova GE can squish the most resonant peaks automatically.

Sonible's Proximity is a very much overlooked plugin but can literally push back or pull forward frequencies in the mix - like the inverse of reverb! Eventide's Physion is also audio voodoo... you can isolate the transients from tones and process them separately! Amazing for tuning down drums without the transients going mushy.

    Yeah, of course a Reaper video would be helpful. I know making a beginner video that is also in-depth is very hard but it's hard to know what to start with. I would be aiming to keep my shortcuts the same. There's an hour long video of someone helping their friend switch from Cubase on RUclips. I need to watch that again.
    But Reaper has this "heirloom configuration" thing going on around habits/workflow, like a lot of other personal and personalized tools. I started with the SWS and Extensions, some small and subtle skin change but muscle memory coming from other DAWs. A buddy of mine has been into it for 10 years and his two major versions upgrade just expired. Yeah, it runs really fast. I've been in Ableton and Bitwig (Logic, Cubase and older ones before that) but never use them live or as "loopers" or clip launchers. So Reaper or some linear DAW should really be where I glue and just track. (I know Reaper can loop, you know what I mean). There's like the idea production and then there's the mixing step. I'm more in the idea production but doing it linearly (on a timeline) is where I get stuff done. Anyway, continuing on ... I just need to track a project and not open the familiar DAW.

    YOU are the main reason I want to try Reaper eventually. I started with Sound Forge and Audacity. Then, transitioned to Pro Tools and Audition. When I got into composing, I started with Logic Pro, cakewalk, then my most hated DAW, FL Studio. Reaper reminds me so much of Winamp since it was the same creator, so I am familiar with how the developer lays out the IO and that glorious customizability. One drawback though, school gave me Ableton Live 10 free since they transitioned to Logic Pro and Magix developers gave me a special discount for Acid Pro as a longtime user. I will eventually make a switch to Linux, and only Reaper and BitWig professional grade daws are supported.

    You have your focus on mixing and mastering and use your analog Neumann console... so I understand that you hardly need any plugins. No effects plugins, no saturation plugins, tape emulations, mastering EQs, etc. It's quite rare to see someone using so few plugins, very interesting!

    Hi Wytse, one question: is this list specifically what you use for mastering? i.e.: I would imagine you have a slew of effects for mixing when you have a client that needs that which are not mentioned here, right? Thank you so much for your work, you've steered me to some great products and also helped me avoid some real dogs!

    When he said "makes a track louder" (I think was the wording)... I wondered if he meant master or individual tracks. Imo it is very specific and obvious in usefull application (I am definitely not claiming to be some pro etc) but it seems better suited for certain sounds not master channel imo.
    If it can do wonders on a master I think THAT would be an AMAZING video for White Sea imo.... a "How I use OTT on a master" vid or something... because many all together knock OTT and joke about it... then most I have seen who use it only use it on certain sounds (including me.) It'd be interesting to see a breakdown of OTT doing master work if it is solid for that.

    Lots of interesting choices in there I don't use. I use a number of UAD plugins, but as I can, I'm replacing them with hardware when possible. I'm going to have to watch the studio tour to see what hardware your using which I might be running plugins for.

    The plugins I use on most projects are Ozone 9 on the Master Bus for the Maximizer. Fab Filter Pro Q 3 for EQ. And Pro R for reverb. Neutron 3 mostly for the MB Compressor. If I am doing vocals I do like Nectar 3's optical compressor a lot. Not sure what it is about that compressor but I just like what it does for vocals. For Distortion and Saturation I use Trash 2 which I got as part of some black Friday bundle but I really do like it. Oh, and Waves Siblance for de-essing great little plugin

    Nice collection....Can't really afford to get all the Izotope and Fab bundles on my new system, but maybe at some point.
    I got True Iron right after watching your video on it. It really is such a great simple tool to have, and very affordable. For anyone who works completely in the box, it's a no brainer!.
    I'm curious if you use any delay plugs. Didn't see any on your list?. You may have analog units that we can't see?. I've recently started using Soundtools EchoBoy and Primal Tap. Both are great....I find them to be more than just good sounding delays....really fun creative tools as well.. highly recommended.
    As someone who works completely in the box......these are some plugs that I use regularly. They may not apply to you or anyone that uses a lot of outboard gear?, but they do sound very good, and worth checking out.
    Townhouse comp(mix buss, drum buss). BX Hybrid 2 EQ( mix buss, mastering). Both from Brainworx
    ACME Opticom XLA 2 comp(anything where you need serious color and saturation)
    SPAN-great RTA and it's free. Elephant-(mix buss limiter, mastering) both live on my mix buss, both from Voxengo.
    SPL Transient Designer. Indispensable tool when working on drums.
    Devil-Loc from SoundTools. Great crushing and distorting the hell out of anything. I use it mostly as a drum sub group.
    Black-Box from Analog Design. Really nice saturation plug. I've had it for a little while and it really does some special things....however, it does take some tweaking to really dial it in. Kind of the opposite of True Iron. Each section affects the other, so it's really a plug in you have to learn.

  • @MPHORROCKS
    @MPHORROCKS 3 года назад

    I imagine that the MIX plugin just needs one (stereo )channel, as they'll both be the same ,L & R. You could use the master version and link the sides to have the same effect. I suppose it just means your eyes only need to see one side, so avoids confusion. Rea;;y want this. The hardware of all the Elysia stuff looks ####ing amazing (especially the Alpha!), but bit too pricey for me at the moment.

    • @rowegardner9673
      @rowegardner9673 4 года назад +1

      Nic Stride it has a very over the top (what the acronym stands for) way of handling multiband compression. You can mix in a tiny bit of it easily and it adds a lot of intensity and loudness. It definitely has a ‘sound’ to it. From my experience (not saying this is a catch-all statement), it’s used all over the place in EDM and is almost essential for a lot of producers. You have to be careful though because a little bit goes a longggg way with OTT.

      Uses both expansion and compression. So quiet sounds are brought up a lot which can sound quite nice. You can obtain a very consistent flat high end on sounds like vocals, or synth and control mud in the low mids by compression and volume reduction

    Aha, also a Reaper fan, I kicked ProTools out of house, because I had a version that they wouldn't upgrade for a decent price. So Reaper was my second choice. Look also for the free TDR VOS Slick EQ, you can toggle between EQ's from British to even Russian. Thanks. You have a great set of plugins. PS: you are right, keep it simple, simplicity is perfection.

    After watching at least 25 of your other vids' I could predict that Fabfilter was going to be in here, and probably no Waves' products. I was correct on both counts. I'm glad you did this video though because' a lot of us self-contained composers can learn from people like you'... who have intensely critical ears. You hear nuances in software like True Iron' by Kazrog' that I can't hear. Of course I could hear the (crush) control when you kicked it up, but the other aspects of this transformer modeling... I'm afraid I can't discern it. That aside, I knew I'd learn something from this video and I did'. The Elysia Alpha Compressor is now on my wanted list. I can clearly hear what it's doing. It's doing something that my 1201 other plugins don't do'.

    I find Soothe and Gullfoss a bit incomprehensible, to be honest - what they identify as “resonances” are, 99% of the time, the actual tonality of the instrument/voice and not resonances at all. That’s.. not stuff you want to be removing? Resonances you’d want to remove aren’t dynamic - they stay at an extremely fixed pitch and can simply be notched out without destroying the rest of your sound like that. They’re really destructive plugins for people who are frankly too lazy to just find the frequency that’s the problem and get rid of it, or for people who are just using it because everyone else is so it must be the right thing to do.
