    this is the BEST.
He was so himself, and just didn't care what anyone thought. He did what he thought made sense - love that he sang Brecht.

While I enjoy "The Doors" Version, David puts the theatrical element back into the song taking it to a whole other level. Ode to the bizarre and perverse that Brecht would have been proud of. Fucking amazing. I never get tired of listening to it.

how is it that most people don't get that this is way closer to the original than the, although pretty good, simplified version by the doors? this one is the real deal. amazing histrionic showing by David.

I get it, but this is precisely why I personally like the Doors version better. The Doors made it their own song and completely altered it. That's what the song needed. It needed to be melodic. It needed to be a smooth experience, not dissonant and harsh like the original. And that's what the Doors did. Bowie's version was still good, just not as good as the Doors' version, no matter how "accurate" Bowie's version was.

He spent time in Berlin in the late 1970-early'80's recovering from substance abuse and trying to find himself again. This song came from that period, and also may have come from his flirtation with Anthony Newely music that he had in the mid 1960's.
