Acorn to Arabella - Journey of a Wooden Boat - Episode 79: Making Sawn Frames

- We've done steam bent frames for the majority of Arabella, now, in the stem and the stern, it's time to make some sawn frames.
Where the bow and stern come in to the centerline timbers, the shape of the hull is fairly sharp. Steam bending frames in these areas would not be very easy nor ideal. Not only are they very short, which would make them difficult to bend, but they also would have to have some sever twist in them. Because of this, making single sawn frames for the bow and the stern were a better idea in our minds.
This gave us the opportunity to test our hand at making sawn frames. Making patterns, finding timber with curved grain to cut them from and then shaping them before installing them back in their place with a different kind of bronze floor. In this video we explain our process for picking up patterns and making the frames. In the next episode we will show more of the work being done organically. Hope you enjoy and thank you for the support!

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

I had to wait through ads embedded in the video for the first time today [really crappy local car ads mixed with Rockler(?)]. Anybody else get that? Does that happen if you watch on the Patreon site?
Can you please let us know if you are getting ads in the middle of watching our videos?
There should only be ads either at the beginning or the end of the videos but there should never be ones in the middle. We have no control over the content of the ads but we should have a say in how many are shown.
We have recently found out that this isn't holding true. Thank you all for your help!
Acorn To Arabella Just a thought on future videos perhaps you should mention/read the message that you posted /I just read.
@@AcornToArabella One was at about 7:00 and the other around 11:00 or so. I probably wouldn't have mentioned it except 1. it's never happened before and 2. I was trying to follow Steve's math, and the ads made it harder to follow.
Really, this isn't a big deal for me - love the project and think you guys are doing an incredible job.
No midvideo ads for me. Thanks A2A! Love your work!
I didn't get to see a single ad, at all!!
The entire video is just a huge buildup to when you first hold the frame to the boat. For so much measurement and transfer and work, getting all of those curves and angles so accurately just blew my mind. Incredible.
👍👌👏
Watching you putting so much effort into those two sawn frames I finally realized completely how incredibly important the old big shipbuilder bandsaw is to/for Leo Goolden/Tally Ho/Sampson Boat Co.. He was really lucky to get it (and he deserves it).
Thanks a lot for making taping editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and health.

Excellent use of CAD... Cardboard Aided Design!
Didn't know they had CAD in the 1800's. LOL. Honestly these guys are really great to watch. They are learning as they go and not afraid. Love the Acorn team. Keep it up and God Bless.
@@rvjunke3073 This was one of the earliest Cardboard Aid Designs as cardboard dates to the 1840s!
These guys are great. I love how they will take the time to find the best possible solutions then teach themselves the proper execution of those solutions. As you say, no fear.
Another fan of Bad Obsession Motorsports, i see. :D
@@capnsparky2436 Not familiar with Bad Obsession. I'll look them up.
I enjoy watching them both, " Acorn to Arabella" and Sampsom Boat Works, oka..."Tallyho!"
great viewing...rr Normandy, France

I started watching your channel after the lead keel episode. I am a machinist and that process intrigued me enough to stay for the rest of the build. I think to date this is my favorite video since then. You took a seemingly impossible task of fitting up all those compound angles, and broke it down to such a simple process. That is the kind of wizardry I am trying to achieve all the time with metalworking. Great job!
Missed the normal opening theme. It is part of your channel signature that I look forward to.
Agreed. I like the visuals, and the musical adaptation is a good one, but I totally associate the original intro song with Arabella and miss it a lot. Nothing negative about the current incarnation, but I prefer the original song.
You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time.
Me too!
After 8 hours of driving around other peoples food, I get to sit down with mine and watch my fav channel. Love you guys!
Food delivery? Like grub/door? You enjoy it? Do they pay fair? And should i tip cash separate from app is that better?
@@Deftonesdsm I deliver for Uber Eats, averaging about $22/hr before fuel, maintenance, tax etc. I enjoy it some nights, not as consistent as I'd like. I rarely get tips but cash would be better as most services will take a 10% cut.
@@GreensladeNZ cool. Yeah i bet uber is better than others. Noted i will tip cash from now on
I feel ya, 8 hours of running in and out of meetings today. But now I have a glass of whiskey and can watch a beautiful ship taking form.
@@GreensladeNZ
Sorry man, but you're fighting in a loosing battle. It will never "be consistent". Go get a formation in a much paying trade and be a winner.
Only Uber is making (huge) profits on your back. And every Uber client is a cheap skate. So, do not expect any decent tip. As an experienced accountant and looking in this trend for some of my own clients, I can tell you you're taken for a ride by Uber and the restaurants. You're taking in all the risks and expenses. Not them.
I hate selfish Uber.
Nice shout-out for Leo and Tally-ho. You guys rock!
I am not going to lie, this one has me lost :) Enjoyed it just the same... Morning Akiva!!
Me too! I guess he thinks in 3-D, like a sculptor. I could watch this 6 times, and still not come up with those odd shaped boards. 😢
Thanks for posting and sharing your precise craftsmanship.
Love this Tube and Tally Ho, what a combination of boat builders!
You never cease to amaze me with your skill sets and knowledge of your project. It's like you read a book..... Youz Guyz make my Friday mornings.
Sorry that you guys get “You Tube” sail boat builders. It is easy for them to watch and criticize. It is your boat. You obviously researched how to build them. You are ingenious and resourceful. You have volunteers helping and you are repurposing parts from your old yacht. So I ask what do they have to say! Keep up the good work. It is interesting to watch the story. The title is a good name. Oh one last thing; remember sailors are cheap. If they weren’t cheap (willing to use the wind to propel the boat) they would own a power boat. Kudos to you guys. Keep it up. From the Third Coast
I'm always amazed at your ingenuity when it comes to fabricating the complicated forms needed. Great work !
I wasn't able to understand most of the words you spoke, but your enthusiasm is great!
Most trades have their own language, it's not designed to confuse the customer, it allows for ideas to be shared with out long explanation
I re-ran the video and understood more of what the guy said. I think he may need to 'crisp up' his lingo for the international audience (though not perhaps to the same extent as Noel Coward does), but then again I'm 70 years old so I probably talk a different sort of English from the youngsters doing this video! They're thoroughly enjoyable videos, thanks for doing them.
For one, is he saying “ribbons” or “rib ends”?
@@briansmith8967 Noun. ribband (plural ribbands) (shipbuilding) A long, narrow strip of timber bent and bolted longitudinally to the ribs of a vessel, to hold them in position and give rigidity to the framework.
(cut/paste from an online dictionary --- don't want you to believe I carry this stuff around in my head!! Cheers)
I am really enjoying your videos. I have watched almost every one. My lady friend sometimes appreciates it due to the fact that it keeps me quiet. I would love to be about 25 years younger. I would love to fly out and help you for a couple weeks or so. Age keeps me just watching. I think that your boat is going to be so beautiful. Nothing like sailing. I am a six year Navy vet from the tin can fleet on the east coast. I love the ocean.
Now that you have it all figured out, time to build another one!!!!
Looking good.
I love watching Talley Ho, and then you. The difference in craftsmenship is very little while the techniques vary greatly. I love the figuring out and the problem solving without the tools that would make it is simpler. Great job. Sail life Athena is awesome to see a craftsmen on the inside. I have a great couple of hours lined out from Friday to Sunday with some boat building. Sometimes I see techniques that help in the finish carpentry part of what I do. Thanks.
Wow, I’m never this early... 👍. My head hurts just looking at how you did this let alone trying to work out how to have cut something like that in the first place. Very nice work. 👍
You guys are incredible. Steven you had me thinking “what are you talking about when you described the front sawn ribs”. Glad you know your stuff, could not follow the inside and outside measuring points. Just not the same as building a 2x4 wall. Confusing but very confident in your ability
It's cool you mentioned Leo. I found your channel by watching him and your videos have been great while waiting on his.
What a great first fit!!
I love this channel and have to say today's episode, with that awesome templating technique for compound angles, is one of the best so far. Keep it up chaps!
Man that's a lot of work. You guys brighten my day with your gotta be right attitude. Thanks
This is so impressive, two young guys building this fantastic boat.
Wow! Nice job making that look easy! HAHA. I am always amazed by the apparent mastery of woodworking that you guys demonstrate in these videos. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the kind words and for watching!
Avid viewer but not a boat builder... thinking you guys should flash a shot of the plans to show exactly where you guys are working with some hi-lighting on the plans. This gives us a good reference for a the complicated pieces you are working on.
That was quite the puzzle to figure out and implement. Great job! Thanks for sharing.
That was an amazing process of developing the design / layout of the cut frames . I hope anyone who ever thought of building a wooden boat took note . I was holding my breath you had a lot of effort in those two pieces of wood ... well done indeed .
I've read about this, seen photos and diagrams... but nothing beats this for explaining the process. Thanks.
Great video thanks for taking the time to make sure your miked well and demonstrate all this.
That one made my brain hurt! This is why kids, you should listen to your geometry / trigonometry teacher.... and you're materials technology teacher.... and maybe your carpentry teacher. Awesome guys, another step forwards. Thanks for sharing.
Shout out to Tally Ho!
Crossover episode is needed!

What are we viewers going to do if they both launch at the same time??
No offence, but this is a dinghy compared top Tally Ho
@@davidarthur6564 well you are wrong but yeah theres many ways to build a boat
Very clever and well done!
Thank you for this video gentlemen. Great explanation of the process of pulling dimensions and getting out the pieces. Arabella is looking better every week. Take care and have a great weekend.
Amazing from start to finish with all the measuring & mathematics to the finished sawn frames. You know your stuff man awesome.
This is the first video where I'm completely lost. Totally dialed in on such important geometry. Well done
What a channel, great to watch you guys building your boat.
I didn’t understand one damn thing... but that’s ok! I’m one step closer to knowing how to build the boat I’m never gonna build.
I so enjoy this channel! Great stuff.
Well now I don't feel so alone, but it is so interesting.
This was super cool craftsmanship Stephen! I was like what - you are kidding me and the final product was spot on. Well done! I enjoy watching your woodworking and boat building. The editing and narration is great as well. Great job videography Alix and editing Ben! I missed the Instagram updates this week. Hopefully a little advanced tidbits to keep us hungry for the next set of future videos. Keep up the good work and I look forward to next Friday.
Very impressive layout and fitting work. Really enjoying watching you guys figure out each aspect as you move forward.
Excellent detail in this video, very inspiring...
I was lost until you took the pattern off and put it on the floor. Very nice.
Leo Sampson is a trained shipwright, craftsman, and very experienced sailor.
That's one of the things that makes watching the two series interesting. Leo's obviously more experienced, and I have a ton of respect for his skills, but if it came to it, I'd rather have a beer with these guys.
He is the man
@@yt2006ty I'd like them have a beer together. Respect for both channels.
I’d have sent them to Leo to cut on his ship saw
!...nicely done, you make it like a walk in the park🤗
Building a wooden boat definitely is an art.
Between the words and the video, really quite well discribed/shown. I think that would give me enough to go on to figure out how to do my own if/when I ever get around to building my own boat. Thanks.
It's great to hear you and Sampson Boat Co. mention each other's existence and difference in construction. I follow you both closely.
Beautiful piece of White Oak... love the flecks!
great job guys!
Hope once she's in the water you make a stop of in the UK. Be awesome to know a boat built by two guys (with a bit of help from.some great volunteers) has made it across the ocean. Maybe.one day before that we get to travel to see her in her birth place. :)
You two guys have the patience of JOB!
This is the first of these videos that I have come across - simply amazing! Wow!
You have a lot of catching up to do!
Very nicely made. They fit well for the first fit. Folks your seeing craftmanship in real time.
Guess what day it is?
It's Acorn to Arabella VIDEO DAY!
love watching you guy's, and Leo also. Great work, very inrteresting!
Love learning the methods and skills of the shipwright....You guys rock!!!!!! Hope to get out to the east coast someday and watch some boat building in person.....
Lovely work, well done. Thanks for sharing
Unbelievable detail you guys amaze me
Brilliant!
You may not have started this project a shipright, but by the time that you're done ... you will be ⛵💞
I'm no shipbuilder but followed the build so far pretty well... til today 😀 on my 2nd watch just to see if anything sinks in... keep going lads, dont wait for me and I'll be along later 🤯
Brilliant... thank you, learn so much, have to watch twice, and loving it. Oh, and shout out to "Tally Ho", Leo and Crew...
Spider at the end was a really cool touch.
Great video as always. Making good progress
Thanks guys for a great video , that template was a bit complicated to work out but got it in the end 🤔🙂👍👏👏👏🇬🇧
Really Master class woodworking, your patience is commendable. Best wishes!
Just watched the Dangar Marine video, so glad you guys talked!
Proper tree-wood trees used to be specially grown so that you could use bough sections straight from the tree, strip the bark off and just nail them into place. Easy, peasy!...Honest, they did!! ;) ;)
Just got my head around the lofting floor ex Leo, this is just voodoo..! ;-)
Excellent
Like the music!
For the thousand times, I was wonder why so many boat builders and woodworkers reach for the "samurai saw" when the "old" conventional saws seem to have a better grip and longer stroke; woodworking only ; ) Suddenly, you did break out that old saw.........THANK YOU!!! DD
Wood with knees like that is also what you need for a full length gun stock. Just a FYI.. Awesome work!
Hey kids, here from dangarmarine. Awesome guys.
Welcome!
Excellent video! That boathouse now looks very comfy. Didn’t look so promising when you were lofting it like mountain climbers! 😃
Another impressive video guys. You never disappoint
Love the Art of Boatbuilding shirt.
Woo hoo, My bent frame dealer is here :)
Can't wait to see Tally Ho and Arabella on a cruise together.
Compound bevels, ship saws, sawn frames--interesting. Spider snagging a caterpillar at 26:50--now that's cool!
Love all the methods and old techniques and tools you use to measure, transcribe and shape these. CAD? pfffttt, whatever. 🤙🤘🤙
Amazing Work
Nice to se Stuart from Danger Marine pop into see you two taking about Sturn tubes etc. By the way good work guys keeping it up.
Alrighty now! Good job guys!
On your next sawn frame set your bandsaw table to the minimum of the two or three bevel angles. When you finish cutting you will have far less chisel and planer work.
Awesome video guys! I love the little banner in the back ground. hadn't seen it in a while. lol
Nice shout out to Leo guys.
Love this channel!
Lovely Line at 24.50 “ like we almost made it to fit” well done!! Viewers, Don’t worry about the strange terms/names just think about the process and all will come clear. I felt like that when I was learning Astro Navigation, which was incidental just before Sat Nav became available!!!
OMG that spider at the end. That was crazy!
Great job guys, greetings from northern Ny. Hope to come visit you guys some time.
Been watching Leo for ages. Amazing job just like yours. Hes got a ship Wrights saw. Lots of nods to you on his channel as well.
I have no idea what you just said, but im still thoroughly entertained
It almost looks like you know what you’re doing. Very nice job.
Sawn frames? I’m so confused! You guys are amazing.....
Awesome as always.
Lots of math involved. Good job.
Is there a strength difference between bent and sawn frames?
Really cool. I have heard (not sure if it is true) that in the Faeroe Islands kids are taught math while learning to build their own boats and houses. It seems like a great way of doing it.
