In this video, I will go through the basic tools you will need to build a small, wooden boat.
Considering the complexity of a wooden boat, you may be surprised by how small and simple this basic tool kit is.
The tools are grouped into three categories: Tools for measuring and marking, tools for cutting wood, and tools for joining pieces of wood together.
Essentially, that's what wooden boatbuilding is about: Drawing a precise line, cutting out the piece and then attaching it to another piece of wood. Then repeat the process until the boat is done.
Obviously, there are a few more details that need to be filled in - but it's not as difficult as you might think.
Some of the tools that will be covered in this video are:
The pencil and the eraser. The square and the bevel gauge. The plumb bob and the level. The pencil compass.
Hand saws. Chisels. Planes and spokeshaves. Files and rasps. Sharpening tools.
Drills, screwdrivers and hammers. Riveting and clench nailing tools. Clamps, nippers and pliers.
Machinery: The bandsaw and the thickness planer.

At Small Boat School, I teach a comprehensive online boatbuilding course, which covers everything you need to know to build a wooden boat: Setting up a workshop. Sourcing tools and suitable wood. Sharpening and using your tools. Reading boat plans. Making plank patterns (spiling). Planking the boat. Steam bending. Fitting the boat out with decking, coaming, guards, hatches ... and every other little detail that's a part of the building process.
Personal support is a central part of Small Boat School. This will ensure that you avoid the usual pitfalls of the first-time boatbuilder while keeping your learning curve as steep as possible.

I am respectfully envious of your work. In the infancy of my first boat building project I seek inspiration here, and there is great comfort knowing we (fellow boaty people) share the passions, curiosities and the reasons behind them. Without pressure, please, do keep going.

@@chrisleggatt3240 I will keep going, for sure! Have you settled on a design for your first boat project yet?

I have, it's a John welsford designed Scamp, we plan to move in the next couple of years to a property with a workshop, so I can't yet start anything big until we do, I have eyes on your fiddlehead for my next possible project. I took an inflatable kayak on a lake on the Isle of Wight and loved it, but I felt a wooden craft would have felt more "right"

@@chrisleggatt3240 I hadn't heard about the SCAMP before, so I just looked it up. It's quite a charming boat! Looks very capable for its size, too. I hope you'll find a place with a workshop soon, and until then dreaming and thinking about boats and workshops isn't too bad either. :-)

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. One of the things I find hard to get my head around is the grains of the timber. For example, which type to select for different part of the boat structure. Just subscribed and hope to learn more.

Hi Joseph. Thanks for watching! I've made a video a while back about finding good boat wood: ruclips.net/video/N1tipBNVFgA/видео.html Perhaps it can be helpful for you. Cheers, Mikkel
