Bravo! I salute the bin system, since it is ultimately adjustable, unlike stationary dividers. I have used bee's wax on drawer slides in antique furniture, just like they did "back in the day." I'd recommend a polyurethane finish on the top of the drawer frame, and side storage.
A few people have told us about beeswax. Just curious, are you using your setup to sleep/camp, or more tool storage? We’ve never had any issues sliding it, but it seems like many do. Also thank you!
Excellent DIY build! I remember looking at a tool storage system like this for my pickup a few years back and it was well over $1000! This is pretty much that! Great job explaining everything about the project!👍
Thank you! We looked at a few of those too before building this and it was just too expensive and too fancy honestly. You have to make this tailored to your own needs I think
For us, the main issue with that system (which will remain nameless! LOL), was that we couldn't easily remove it, and it was actually too tall (we wanted as much head room as possible). Also, I am hopeless treehugger and the idea of putting all that plastic in the landfill afterwards made me ill! -Greyhound
@@MagellanandGreyhound This looks great! That pricey nameless system also weighs between 200 and 230lb. What do think your DIY system weighs (without gear in it)? I'm betting less...
@@ggray4481 Good question. I am not good at estimating weight and of course everything feels heavier than it actually it is. Maybe 150 pounds? I'd say 100 without the drawers

Such an awesome video. This build is perfect for me and the wife so we followed it to a T and had amazing results! Thank you so much h for the great instructions and amazing ideas! Still deciding what kind of hardware to use and the face plate for the drawers
We just read this aloud together. You just made our day. We are so glad it worked out! It was very difficult to make this video given that we had already made it. Where are you going to take it for its maiden voyage? 😁
Thanks, I’ll check it out! Dude, you aren’t joking! We kick ourselves for not only waiting years to make this video, but showing our adventures in it as well. We watched these years ago for ideas, but we thought we were weird, and everyone who sees us go in the back thinks we’re weird lol.
Really cool guys! I watch a lot of different types of build out videos and its great to see the simple approach. I might just go with something really similar on the next one!
I don't think we'd have been able to make something complicated! 😂 But we do believe in simple. Last thing you want on a weekend away or a road trip is to be bogged down by the complexities of a setup. Been there done that!
Thank you! We know a lot of people think this might be hard to build, but we are not carpenters or experts. We tried to keep it simple, because we just want a nice place to sleep and fit our gear when we travel :)
I'm looking to make a similar system like yours but was really surprised to see your is working so well without runners! I might give this idea a go but still not sure, thanks for your video
We were surprised too! I’m thinking between not ever loading it up too insanely, a plastic bedliner, good handles, and not making the drawers too snug, we’ve never had an issue. People do all sorts of stuff, paraffin wax, gliders etc. I’m sure you’ll find what works for you. For us, we prefer simple.
@@MagellanandGreyhound I did some more research and saw that long runners cost way too much money. So this concept will do 😃 I just hope my 60l fridge (20kg)at the beginning of the drawer will not stop everything from moving smoothly! But only 1 way to find out. Thanks for the helpful vid
That’s actually the best place to put it. We always try to put heavier things up front. You have less drawer to pull out 😊. I’m sure it will work out fine.
@@MagellanandGreyhound thats actually really comforting to know I was already worrying about this! Thanks for letting me know, I'll start building soon with a bit more peaceful of mind 👍
Thank you! We won’t take too much credit. Just a hodgepodge of ideas from years ago on RUclips 😁. We’ve heard from many that they use wax. That makes sense. Is yours for two people or solo?
Thank you so much!! We wanted to build a removable setup as well and you definitely inspired our build! We ended up using birch plywood and it ended up pretty heavy, but we like how it turned out! We’ll see how well its holds up! Thanks again!!
Oh wow, awesome! We are glad we could help in some way. We found that plywood is usually heavier than solid wood, but if there's two of you, it isn't that awful right? It depends on how often you remove it I guess? 😂 It'll hold up fine! Happy adventuring!
I used candle wax to help with the sliding on one of my other projects. This is a good design, but I'm going to think of a way to fold/stack the whole thing near the front in order to use the bed for stuff and without needing a garage to store this.
Candle wax definitely helps! We didn’t need it for this. That’s an interesting dilemma though. I’m thinking - if I wanted something to stack due to lack of storage - maybe make two platforms, half the size and with half sized drawers? And when I need to make room I lift the back half atop the front half and push to the rear? Just brainstorming.
Awesome! Our original build didn’t have sides, but it was also hastily thrown together. We were throwing kayak paddles etc underneath and using a crowbar to grab containers. If we were both short, we could throw a queen in this and be done, but headroom is important too. No truck build is perfect for any one or two people lol
@@MagellanandGreyhound Headroom was the most important for us which is why we chose a Leer 122. We didn't like the price or the 4 week build time but we're happy with our decision. Best of luck!
@@storiesoverstuff absolutely. I think we had to wait 5 or 6 weeks for ours at the time too. Never skimp on what you want. The wait is definitely worth it. Have fun!
You can take your drawer pull off : using the same holes : and add another pull : use one hole move pull to the left adding a hole for the pull : then add new pull to the right : reusing second hole and add another hole for the new pull on right
Just a idea I am going to try. I am going to put 4 or 5 disposable cutting board sheets on the bottom of the drawers with glue. just a little slipperier.
Just additional advice, for more support on the drawers themselves, take a 4 by 4 post, cut a piece off thats the same size as the inside. Next cut the 4 by 4 diagonally in half. This will allow a lof more support for the corners. Incase you have heavy items in the drawers!
Wow, this is really some series and excellent work! I am amazed to see how you managed to get that much storage space with the brilliant idea! Definitely this will make your road trip more enjoyable and you can carry literally a single BR of items..) Excellent work! 😊👍
I love the simplicity of your build. Driving off-road causes the bed of the truck to flex and twist. I want to build a raised floor like yours to hide a water tank and grey tank. Is not bolting to the truck bed the best way to prevent damage to the floor and cabinets bolted to it?
Thank you! To be honest, I don’t know the answer to your question. I know others have bolted theirs down and haven’t heard of any issues. For us, ours was tight enough but just loose enough for play that we never noticed any damage. Would love to hear/see about how you put water/gray tanks in! That sounds ambitious but wonderful of it works out
Thank you! No, I think it’s too heavy (because of the drawers)! I suspect if we made it smaller, it could move, but it’s a pretty snug fit. Good luck with the Tacoma!
Thank you! And no, we didn’t. Part of our reason why not is that as we pull the drawer out farther, it weighs down on a slight angle off the tailgate, and so it will get caught underneath the slight lip of the opening. Granted, if we really wanted to yank it out, it will! A stop wouldn’t hurt, that’s for sure, but we never had an issue.
Would it be possible to get a link for the mattress that worked for you? Too many options out there! Thanks so much for this video... I'm going to try to build it!
It is - shepherdsdream.com/ - this was very expensive, be forewarned. We had to have it custom made to be slightly smaller to fit into the truck. For us though it was a good investment because when not traveling we used it in a guest bedroom in our house and later in our camper. There are many options and most stink lol. Beds aren’t comfortable, don’t quite fit right etc. we figured if we had to sleep in a truck bed, we deserved a good bed. Hope this helps!
Thank you so much! It was a labor of love. And lol - I assure you the wood was not free. We have a dozen garden beds and trellises in our yard and just had this fairly substantial wood supply afterwards, so we just used that. I would not be wanting to buy wood right now!
Thanks! That was the goal. We use the truck besides camping so this was our solution. As for the 1x’s, it’s just what we had hanging around in the wood shop. Definitely made for a solid bottom to the drawers, which was needed!
This is cool. I have a 95 Ram w/club cab, 6.5' bed. Do you happen to know if your build would fit my truck? Also, is the box bottom required for increased stability? Trying to get a sense if I can get away without having a bottom to the box. My bed is plastic lined, so I figure sliding the drawers in and out should be no problem.
It’s a customizable build so I wouldn’t see why not. RAM bed lengths haven’t changed much over the years. It’s all about whether you feel like you have enough room lol. We built the box bottoms for the stability, yes. Our first version did not and we always felt like it was going to collapse. The big plus to not building a bottom was the build was in pieces and could be removed by one person - this build takes two people. Or the Hulk LOL.
Thanks for the ideas I just finished up with my version of your set up. Only one issue where do I get those side rail beer holders there perfect I've tried typing in every posable description I can think of and nothing like those come up please help me from wasting any more spilt beer. Thanks guys
The good news is we linked this in our original truck tour video. - amzn.to/2J5IgU4 - the bad news is it looks like they’re temporarily unavailable. But it should give you a good idea on what they’re called to maybe search for other types. Spilled beer no more!
I can’t remember the brand, but we do have a truck tent extension. It’s like a tall foyer into the cap. It takes forever to setup so we only use when at a place we know we’ll be for awhile.
By the tailgate - do you mean the drawers underneath? Not an actual truck tailgate right? If so, the platform should hold up no problem whatsoever. Our first iteration had no drawers, or a bottom, but we didn’t screw anything and it was rickety LOL. It was meant to be temporary.
@@MagellanandGreyhound yeah i meant does your trucks tailgate happen to hold up the drawers when pulled out? We will likely create a support leg for the drawers either way, but i was curious if that had something to do with the drawers being so sturdy when pulled out!
@@bayleyjunes oh I understand now. Yes the tailgate holds it fine. By the time the drawers reach their end, the weight of gravity will angle them up a bit and they’ll catch inside the bed platform. Unless you pull the drawers totally out, then gravity will set in LOL. If you’re pulling out of an SUV, I’d do a support leg of some kind then
@@MagellanandGreyhound thank you for your response! Yeah we don't have a tailgate on our expedition so we will be looking for some type of extra support just incase.
I'm curious if this could still be done with the drawers if you used PVC pipe? I wanted to but then decided on wood because of attaching drawer slides, but if drawer slides are not needed i'm curious if it could still be done with a PVC frame, and the top plywood would cover it as well as the drawer fronts could cover the front part so you wouldn't see it. Just an idea, would love to hear your thoughts!
We haven’t done that, but I don’t see why that wouldn’t work. There were a few other comments on this video or our ones where people said they did that. I think the biggest issue for us was always weight (and keeping it simple). If things got to heavy we may have went with pipe, slides, paraffin wax under the drawers. But it works fine because of the plastic bedliner lol
Thank you! To be honest, we don’t feel we are great at woodwork either, but comfort levels are different. My dad is a carpenter and if he lived nearby he could have built this for us in 1/100th of the time. 😂😂😂
@@larryhawes8295 no problem! Definitely prioritize comfort! That bed is just a custom version of the one in our house. Nothing like sleeping on the same bed on the road like at home!
Technically speaking, no idea! 😁 Our mechanic ran a line from our main battery to the back with an automatic shutoff. We bring one of those portable battery jumps in case. Hope that helps but sorry if it didn’t
Truck bed length and height definitely matters! That's why we got a slightly higher cap. There are so many options out there, and to be honest, it's even easier if you're going solo, because you don't need to build a full platform like we did. Thank you for watching!
This is by far and away the best video for bed storage I've seen and exactly how I prefer to build. There are true craftsmans out there and the following url is one of them where I'll steal his sliding mechanism, but utilize your plan. His video is: ruclips.net/video/d-BWmPaBfjQ/видео.html And he uses 1x4 3/16inch UHMW plastic to make the drawers slide smoothly. From what he said, it's wear-resistant, low-friction, and self-lubricating. Great job and like another fellow stated, I'll be stealing this too. Thank you very much. Oh, I'll be stealing your air conditioner too. I live in CO, but we travel to Utah a ton and it's a teeny bit hot in the summer. Thanks again and happy adventuring.

I'd recommend a polyurethane finish on the top of the drawer frame, and side storage.
A few people have told us about beeswax. Just curious, are you using your setup to sleep/camp, or more tool storage? We’ve never had any issues sliding it, but it seems like many do. Also thank you!
@@MagellanandGreyhound I have used bee's wax on drawer slides in antique furniture, just like they did "back in the day."
Looking forward to this x
Oh wow, you’re back! Did you delete your old channel? I noticed it vanished on my feed and I tried to find and you were both gone.

Amazing job my friends! I love the way you improve the space with the drawers. Perfect for your wonderful adventures
Thank you so much! It is finite space, so you really have to use every bit you can! This thing has given us the chance to do some amazing adventures!
Great build! We have a vid just like it and it’s amazing how much people love these videos.
You guys did an awesome work on that!!!! Respect ✊ I am jealous of your creativity 😊👏
Thank you Costa! It has made our trips unbelievable!
Great instructional video.
Thank you! We tried to explain as much we could without being able to rebuild it 😁
Really cool guys!
This was an awesome build! Great use of materials and the design is great!
Thank you! We know a lot of people think this might be hard to build, but we are not carpenters or experts. We tried to keep it simple, because we just want a nice place to sleep and fit our gear when we travel :)
@@MagellanandGreyhound shows that with some elbow grease and some time you can do it. Giving us some great ideas for Sake!
Yes definitely. We are not craftspeople either, but this was way better living out of a Toyota Corolla with a tent.
Great and easy job, thanks!!
Thank you! That was the idea!
@@dbrowngaming7583 if you build the drawers first, you can always stick it in the bed with the fridge and test it out too 😊
Buen vídeo,gracias.
¡Lo apreciamos!
Love your build! I used formica strips instead of slides, and paste wax helps the drawer slide easier.
Thank you! We won’t take too much credit. Just a hodgepodge of ideas from years ago on RUclips 😁. We’ve heard from many that they use wax. That makes sense. Is yours for two people or solo?
@@MagellanandGreyhound , Its just for me, it's a shortbed so I have to sleep at an angle! Lol!
@@brianszakacs3424 still a place to sleep!
Very cool and simple design!
Thank you! That was the idea. We aren't that skilled beyond this! :)
This is a great video thank you so much
Thank you! 😁
We just started our own build similar to this. We opted to keep the sides open but we like your side cubbies and may build some in the future.
Have fun!
awesome build! doing a single drawer/half bed version with plywood, but most likely copying your side drawer things, those are sweet lol nice vid!
Awesome! Yes I’d have done that for the solo trips I take. Definitely more roomy! And copy away! Space is space lol
Love this video👍
Super helpful 👏👏👏👍
Thanks! I am glad it helped!
to help with slide, try a little grease, great vid, Thank you
Thank you as well D B! These labors of love are always works in progress. And glad you enjoyed!
You can take your drawer pull off : using the same holes : and add another pull : use one hole move pull to the left adding a hole for the pull : then add new pull to the right : reusing second hole and add another hole for the new pull on right
If I’m visualizing correctly, I can see this being a much easier and stable pull. Never thought of that
Really nice setup guys 😮 really inspiring again 😎😁
Thank you! 😀
Just a idea I am going to try. I am going to put 4 or 5 disposable cutting board sheets on the bottom of the drawers with glue. just a little slipperier.
That’s a good idea. We had no issues sliding ours unless we made them too heavy. Which was sometimes too often 😁
It’s great that you use re-purposed lumber, And by the way that’s a great build I’m going to use this for my build. Love your videos!
We always try to reuse everything. Easier said than done but it’s nice when we can. Let us know how it goes, and thank you!
Just additional advice, for more support on the drawers themselves, take a 4 by 4 post, cut a piece off thats the same size as the inside. Next cut the 4 by 4 diagonally in half. This will allow a lof more support for the corners. Incase you have heavy items in the drawers!
That’s a great idea. And doesn’t seem too complicated. We have definitely made it a bit heavy at times.
Wow, this is really some series and excellent work! I am amazed to see how you managed to get that much storage space with the brilliant idea! Definitely this will make your road trip more enjoyable and you can carry literally a single BR of items..) Excellent work! 😊👍
Thank you! We have so much gear. It definitely helps to have a place fit food and etc for longer trips!
That sounds ambitious but wonderful of it works out
Very nice build.
Thanks Cary !
Nice job!
Put finishing paste/wax on the drawer bottoms/top of the floors. No need for pvc, rollers, bearings, glide strips, etc.
We’ve heard of using wax. And thank you! 😊
How did you get the two 1x12 boards to stay together for the drawers? Glue?
Awesome build btw!
No glue used at all. Just screws! And thank you.
Hello! :)
How did you screw the side by side boards together to make screw disappear? Seems tricky
Great build! Does it not shift forward and back while you drive? Looking to do this on my Tacoma! Thanks!
Thank you! No, I think it’s too heavy (because of the drawers)! I suspect if we made it smaller, it could move, but it’s a pretty snug fit. Good luck with the Tacoma!
I may or may not be stealing some ideas here ;)
Steal away! We’re just paying it forward ourselves.
I'm DEFINITELY stealing some ideas! 🤣
Great video ! I might have missed this, but did you use a stop for the drawers from sliding all the way out and falling incase we forget to stop?
This was the best truck platform video I've seen. Im impressed and inspired. Now where do you get all this free wood? haha.
Thank you so much! It was a labor of love. And lol - I assure you the wood was not free. We have a dozen garden beds and trellises in our yard and just had this fairly substantial wood supply afterwards, so we just used that. I would not be wanting to buy wood right now!
Love the simplicity and how it is removable. Curious why the 1x’s instead of plywood?
Thanks! That was the goal. We use the truck besides camping so this was our solution. As for the 1x’s, it’s just what we had hanging around in the wood shop. Definitely made for a solid bottom to the drawers, which was needed!
Thanks guys
Thank you Jeff! Hopefully you get some good ideas, and can give us some good ones too! We are not craftspeople LOL
@@MagellanandGreyhound Thanks! This is all super helpful. Going to figure out how I want it and plan it out. Let you know how it goes!
@@FG_Manos no problem! No one idea is the best either. You have to make it work for you. RUclips is filled with great ideas. 😊

Have you ever tried to adapt a truck tent to fit above this drawer build? Thanks
I can’t remember the brand, but we do have a truck tent extension. It’s like a tall foyer into the cap. It takes forever to setup so we only use when at a place we know we’ll be for awhile.
HMWP makes a great slide material in 1/4 inch thickness 1 1/2 inch wide on each side of the bottom
Oh cool, just looked it up. Looks like it could double in some sense as insulation too.
Love this!! Do you think the drawers will hold up without the tailgate? currently building out an SUV!
@@bayleyjunes no problem and good luck!
New subscriber l like the build of your setup, but l am not good at building any wood work. I would have to hire a carpenter for that. Good job.
Thank you! To be honest, we don’t feel we are great at woodwork either, but comfort levels are different. My dad is a carpenter and if he lived nearby he could have built this for us in 1/100th of the time. 😂😂😂
I need to build one
Unless you’re in a rush, wait until the price of wood goes down! 😂

Steal away! We watched videos 5 years ago with the same mindset lol
Thanks for information where did you get the mattress?
I think the company was called Shepherds Dream. It was pricey though because it was custom. But it’s our main bed at home too.
Teflon or uhmw tape on the bottom will aid in the slide.
Oooh that’s a good idea. Never thought of that. Thank you!
How did you get power to the bed of the truck?
Technically speaking, no idea! 😁 Our mechanic ran a line from our main battery to the back with an automatic shutoff. We bring one of those portable battery jumps in case. Hope that helps but sorry if it didn’t
I'd be so bleary-eyed that I might get up and bonk my head against the top of the truck. Ugh. But otherwise...that...seems...awesome.
His video is: ruclips.net/video/d-BWmPaBfjQ/видео.html
And he uses 1x4 3/16inch UHMW plastic to make the drawers slide smoothly.
Thank you Gary. Steal away! I remember when we were building this years ago and watching so many videos. No one video was exactly what we wanted. We’ve had a few people tell us that works great, especially if you’re opening them often.
What’s the thickness of the timber for the drawers?
All the boards we used were one by boards.
Well, if you're ready to to this again, I can stop by 😅
😁
Can I ask what kind of mattress topper or bed you are using?
I forget the name of the company, but it's a wool mattress. We use it both with the cap and our slide-in camper. It's the bed we have in our house as our main bed too. Super comfy, but I remember being a little pricey.
Did you guys get this bed arrangement idea from Mav....
No, but that is flattering! Just looked him up. We watched a ton of videos about five years ago when we built this. Don’t remember which, but that’s where we got our ideas.
do you have a list of the lumber you purchased for this?
Unfortunately no, I’m sorry, we don’t have the cut list. I wish we had kept track but we made the video after it was done by many a year 🙂. We had a decent amount of the lumber sitting around too so it’s not like a receipt would help either
Where did yall get that roll up mattress
Shepherd's Dream in Oregon. Just a warning, it was not cheap. We have one for our bed at home too, so we ordered a custom size one that we use in the cap and camper. If it’s comfortable at home, why not when we travel? 😁
What kind of mattress do you use?
It's a wool mattress. The one thing we splurged on because we needed it thinner but comfortable. We got ours custom made at shepherdsdream.com/ I believe. Definitely pricey.
How thick is your mattress?
Cheers!!
I think it’s minimum four inches, max six. It’s been pretty used at this point 😆
Where did you get the plastic bins that are in the drawers
We got them from a farm/farmers market that were getting rid of them. I’m not sure where you would buy, but some kind of agricultural pan / fruit tray is probably the term. They collapse when not in use if that helps too.
