  • Want to know all about pens for urban sketching? This is the video for you! The pen is an important component of the ink and watercolour wash technique that is commonly used in urban sketching. I use it to draw out the scene and shade out the darkest areas before adding the watercolour wash.
    In this video I will share what you should look out for when buying a pen for urban sketching and bring you to Overjoyed, an art supply store in Singapore to check out the selection of eligible pens.
    What pen do you use for urban sketching? What questions do you have about pens? Let me know in the comment section!
    You can get the pens and inks from Overjoyed if you are in Singapore and if you prefer to buy from Amazon I have also included the links below:

    When I’m overseas, I always use the Uniball Air (comes in two sizes). It’s a disposable rollerball point pen that can draw thin and thick lines, and it uses waterproof ink. Those needle point felt tip pens can wear down quite fast on rough watercolour paper, and sometimes is difficult to get a line with sharp edges because of the texture of the paper.
    When not overseas, I just use my Pelikan M200 with Fine nib. I’ve grown accustomed to using that pen I guess even though I have many other pens.

      Does uniball come in different nib sizes? I bought one in broad but the line is too thick for me. But it writes smoothly and ink flows very well.

    For what it's worth, you can refill Micron pens -- but then you have to pay attention to the archival and waterproof characteristics of the ink. To refill it, you just need a small pair of needle nose pliers to pull off the nib, an eyedropper to add ink, then push press the nib back in -- keeps some stuff out of the landfill

    • @eurekawanders
      @eurekawanders  Год назад

      Thanks for sharing this! I think we should also consider the integrity of the nib unit. I had a few that worn out when the ink was gone.

    I use a TWSBI diamond 580 for outdoor sketching. Nib is , works well on heavyweight art papers, is wet, and pen works even after standing. Pen holds a lot of ink and piston fills. Even though ink is not waterproof, I find I can use a very gentle, dryish wash over it. Pen will work with semi waterproof inks, with the usual caveats about cleaning regularly.

SketchInk from R&K is awesome, I have it in a Faber-Castell pen and works great for sketching and drawing. It also has a few different colours so you can play with that too.

    Nothing can come even close to Platinum Preppy with Platinum Carbon Ink cartridges. Incredible great price, high quality nib in 3 sizes, no messing with converters. The spring supported cap mechanism prevents the pen nib to dry off. Since I have Preppy, I stopped using Micron, Parker any of my other pens. Preppy is so inexpensive that I bough all the three sizes. A converter for my Parker is more expensive then three Preppys.

    I haven't had the courage to try urban sketching yet 😅 but I am a bit of a pen fanatic, so this is still very much a subject I'm interested in! I have a few entry level fountain pens, they're so nice and I really love that I can refill them from jars of ink. I'm looking for a good refillable technical pen right now, that will probably be my next stationery purchase. At some point I want to get a really good, old-school flex nib, but that's far in the future for me.
    I have a lot of custom multi pens, but those refills generally come in individual plastic bags (and aren't waterproof, which is a less than ideal combination when I use highlighters when I study). I go through a lot of them, so I end up with a ton of unnecessary plastic packaging. Fountain pens don't have that issue! I'm pretty sure you can refill and reuse cartridges as well, if you use a syringe...
    Also: I can't use pens that where the cap doesn't post - I lose stuff all the time (during quarantine I actually lost my glasses for WEEKS. I knew they were somewhere at home, but had no idea where)(they were between my couch cushions 🤦‍♀️).
    I look forward to seeing what people use, I'm sure there'll be interesting recommendations in the comments section :)

      Refillable technical pens can be quite pricey! I don’t have one. I wonder if it is refillable with fountain pen ink?

      Do you mean the Colette pens? I use that for work cos i can have 3 pen colours and 1 pencil in one pen! Very useful! But I agree with you on the plastic packaging and I tend to go through them really quickly.

    • @FaerieDust
      @FaerieDust 3 года назад

      @@eurekawanders Yes, I've got a couple of Coletos and a couple of other brands as well - I really love them, they're great pens, but I really wish they'd at least sell the most used colors in bigger packaging - it would be so much more efficient to sell ten black refills in one plastic bag than making people buy ten individually packaged ones. The actual refills cause enough plastic waste on their own, I wish they'd at least try to reduce that for the refills...

      You can refill your “disposable” Micron pens when they’re dry with India ink tho... if they do finally gunk up, no worries, you were going to throw them away anyways, but if you draw often, you’ll get months/years extra use out of them instead of having to buy new ones all the time, and all for just using cheap waterproof India ink :) (just use pliers/tweezers and pull the silver nib off and drip your ink in, voila!)
