Fantastic tutorial, thanks. One note for me was that the 8mm triple square in the set I bought from O'Reilly didn't fit, 8mm was too big and 6mm was too small. Hi Shayne. 2008 S Rabbit owner here. My latch would not close, and I bought a replacement (not OEM) off ebay, and then OEM item # off VW website. parts.scottvw.com/p/Volkswagen_2008_Rabbit-S-Hatchback-25L-5-cylinder-MT/Lock-Latch/54005465/1K6827505F9B9.html The latch installs easily and works beautifully. BUT... my light is still on, just like you! Here are my suggestions... I have not figured this out yet... please take the latch in your hand, and "close" it with your finger, until it clicks. You can do this without it being plugged in, and you can just flick the little lever to re-open it. Again, this works great. BUT... now when it is closed... please push it ANOTHER half inch... it will find ANOTHER catch point. If you do this when the thing is wired up, then the tailgate light will go out! BUT (double BUT) I tried a ton of things on my Rabbit and I cannot get the door to close far enough to get that second "push." So, even though the liftgate closes and holds nicely, the car does not detect it as "closed." Please note, that on the older models (like my Rabbit), when you press the latch there is ONLY one "catch" and no need for the second "push." So I get the feeling this is a slightly mis-labelled part. What I am going to try next is to buy a new latch bar: parts.scottvw.com/p/Volkswagen_2008_Rabbit-S-Hatchback-25L-5-cylinder-MT/Striker-PLATE/48120449/1T0827517A.html the latch bar in this picture looks a LITTLE different from the one on my car. So I am guessing that if I install the new latch bar with the new latch, then I will get that second "push." Or... I can just maybe replace the cylinder in my latch bar with something more elliptical. Thanks for reading so long... now some GOOD NEWS. In frustration I started messing around with my old latch. Again, in your hand, pull the release lever. Then try to close the latch... it won't. BUT... if you look on the back you will see a little black plastic piece which looks "stuck." If you poke it with finger, it will move and the latch will be closed. Do this a few times, maybe put some wD40 on it... then try and wipe as much of the rust and corrosion crap out of there as you can... your old latch might work again! Please respond back if you want pix or anything. I hope this is slightly helpful. And Martin, thank you for the video!
ok update. You can actually take the latch apart. If you can get into it... you will see two small metal strips that press two switches. If the top switch is pressed, the latch light (in the rear of the car) is on. If the bottom switch is pressed, the indicator on the dash (the problem we both have) is on. Now, if you flatten out the metal bar that is over the bottom switch, you can re-assemble the latch, and the indicator light on the dash is FIXED! BUT... this means that the indicator light on the dash will never go on! So, I am working on making a nice bridge between the two metal strips... stay tuned.
@@etrtomryan hiya, unfortunately I got caught up with work and was not able to mess with the metal strips. My new latch works great, and it is smooth, but my hatch never registers as open. This, to me, is preferable to the hatch always registering as open because there is no way to disable that!! When it gets a little warmer I may mess with this again. Very sorry I could not get you a good update yet...
Hey I have an 09 sportwagen and the hatch button does nothing. It wont open at all anymore. Is this a common symptom of a broken latch as well? Should I buy a whole new latch. @@bubbaskywalker3129 Hi, for me, when my problem got bad it was because everything was so gunked up inside I wouldn't get a noise because nothing would really move...

Most often, a small plastic gear breaks in the gearbox of the look. A repair without new parts is therefore not possible. However, there is an emergency release that can be operated mechanically from the inside. However, since the other parts of the gearbox and the motor only have a limited service life, it is not economical to just replace the plastic gear wheel. But feel free to do so. The parts are available on ebay and let us know your experiences.

So, I am working on making a nice bridge between the two metal strips... stay tuned.
@@splatbubble same problem with me today. any update?
@@etrtomryan hiya, unfortunately I got caught up with work and was not able to mess with the metal strips. My new latch works great, and it is smooth, but my hatch never registers as open. This, to me, is preferable to the hatch always registering as open because there is no way to disable that!!
When it gets a little warmer I may mess with this again. Very sorry I could not get you a good update yet...
Great
Does this tailgate locker works for any golf state?
As far as I know this lock is used in Golf 6 and many different Models of VW, Audi, Scoda, Seat and so on.
What if the light in boot on estate does not work and the boot does not show in dash board what could it be
Peter hello please see my response to shayne pooley above... there are little switches inside the latch system that you can get at.
Hey I have an 09 sportwagen and the hatch button does nothing. It wont open at all anymore. Is this a common symptom of a broken latch as well? Should I buy a whole new latch. Problem used to be intermittent, but it's completely broken now. Just confused by the fact I don't even have a grinding noise.
Could also be a wiring issue. Does the emergency opener on the inside work?
@@MartinMeise Yes it does.
@@bubbaskywalker3129 Hi, for me, when my problem got bad it was because everything was so gunked up inside I wouldn't get a noise because nothing would really move...
Dose this lock works for golf 6 2010? Answer please
As far as I know, yes.
The Lock works, but it takes many tries on the opening switch -- Same repair?
Maybe. Could also be a broken cable. Does it sound the same as in the video?
@@MartinMeise No. No sound. It just doesn't release. I have to keep fiddling with it, then it finally does. Maybe a few tries. Thanks for the quick response.
@@gaetanpappalardo3892 Sound more like a broken cable or a defective switch.
@@gaetanpappalardo3892 i have the same issue on mine as you pal 👀 did you get it sorted in the end?
@@blackcountrycycleman7942 I didn't do the repair yet. Looks like you have to take the tailgate apart. I'll prob replace the switch and see what happens.
Torx 15 or Torx 20 I thought...

this is not a repair, its replacement
for me, this failed in 06/2020, 09/2021 and now in 11/2023
It is sadly not very reliable
Deutsch kalitat, what a joke 😅
This NOT repair. Its replacement.
ha ha. misleading title. its not a repair its a replacement procedure.
well done though and well explained.
but its only good if you're lucky to already have a brand new or refurbished lock in your hand when the lock fails. would be useful if you could repair it yourself, at least temporary until new arrives in mail.
