Replacing a Broken MK7 GTI / Golf Trunk Latch

- Will a $20 aftermarket trunk latch with an "incompatible" part number work for my 2015 GTI? The OEM part is $300-$350, while other aftermarket latches with the correct part number range from $50-$100. After breaking a $55 aftermarket eBay latch, I decided to give the "incorrect" part number a try.

broken hatch latch boot trunk how to change replace fix repair
The latch motor on my 2016 GTI was making a grinding noise and would not lock. Replaced it with the part linked in the description and it works perfectly! Thank you so much!
Awesome! Thanks for the comments!
The dealer tried to charge me $700 to fix this. $500 for the latch alone! Bought a replacement from eBay for $23. Thank you for this video, I’m confident this will work for me too. 😊
Saving $$$!!
@@clintathusaz the hardest part was getting the panels back on! This was so simple, thank you again! Took me about 15-20 min
Yeah they can be a bit of a pain to get perfect, but not worth $200
I don't own a Golf and who knows if I ever will. But learning how to do this, can help me when someone else have a problem and don't know how to fix it. Great video man. Learned something new. 🤙🏼
Thanks for the comment!!
Thank you for this video and link to the trunk latch. I have a 2015 GTI and it worked perfectly.
Not a problem! Glad it worked out for you!
I just renewed my lock on my Tiguan and didn't remove all the trim. Just unpopped the bottom part and it gave enough access to change the latch.
Thanks for the guide! Had some issues getting the large piece back, but after bending the piece that goes towards the window as well as it let me, it snapped right in. Putting those plastic pieces back was honestly the hardest part 😂
You just saved me $300 bucks. Thank you to you and thank you RUclips.....Have a great day!!!!
I love hearing that!! Glad it helped you save a bit!
Clint, I can’t thank you enough for putting this video on RUclips and also the links to the parts. I was able to replace the latch and it worked. It saved me $$$$, amazed how the shops reap you off. Thanks a ton, Clint!! 🙏🏻 🙏🏻
You are super welcome!! I'm glad you were able to save some money
Thanks Clint! Worked great to fix my hatch lock on my 2015 GTI.
This worked great for me on a Mk7 sportwagen thanks for saving me $280
Worked for me. Thank you very much for this video. I have a 2017 Golf GTI S. I used the links you provided for the part and tools.
just did the same to my '17 GTI S! Can confirm everything works perfectly
Excellent! Thanks for commenting!
Great! Thanks for confirming!
Thanks man, glad I ended up here first instead of the dealer.
Super easy worked great and really helped me out $$$ so thank you! Mine is a 2016 VW GTI SE MK7
Yes!! Thank you for the comment!
Haven't seen a video from you in a long time. Welcome back
Ha thanks! Takes a good bit of time to put them together.
Very useful. Thanks
This is great, same problem on mine!
Thanks!
Can you please post the part number for the one you bought for the GTI hatch latch.
5M0827505E, there is an Amazon link in the description for the latch I used.
Thank you! Ordered.
Oem part is now $463! Crazy.
was this still working after a month. my thought is that the metal piece that it is supposed to hook into is pushed far back and not engaging. either way thank you for this video.
Nice video! The video is a year old…does the trunk latch still work?
It does! Not a problem at all with it!
I did this, but the rear latch will not unlock and I have to manually pull the white actuator. Is there a rod that connects to the rear latch?
What if you can't open the hatch from inside? Moving the white lever does not release the latch. I've pulled and pushed and it won't budge. You can't remove the large inside panel with it closed, can you? HELP!
Same issue here, hit a speed bump recently and it turned the lock enough to release it, so proper way to fix it if the emergency lever doesn’t open. So just keep driving over those bumps
My latch will lock the hatch shut, but I can't open it back, and the backup camera won't work. Watching your vid and about to try to replace the latch, wish me luck.
Mine felt locked too, just keep going back and forth with it until it hopefully ejects and opens
@@tonynosko I replaced the latch recently. The new one is still temperamental, but it works more often than not, and the backup camera is starting to work intermittently too. Better than nothing, I guess.
This worked on a 2016 Golf R mk7
Great video. Would this also work for mk7.5 GTI’s you think?
Thanks! I would think so. Not that many changes between the versions.
@@clintathusaz thanks a lot! I’ll update you with my findings after I receive the part.
@@Keytap15 I've got a 7.5 as well, did it fit?
@@jason90molina it did! It fit and works perfectly.
@@Keytap15 awesome!! Thank you!
thanks dude 🤌
What year is your golf? Will it work for a 2015 you think?
Yep mine is a 2015
I'm having trouble getting the largest piece of the liner reinstalled. The piece seems way wider than the window. do you get the left and rght ends tucked in first before inserting all the clips?
Same problem here lol
can you solved at the end ? i cant put i back too
Thanks for this video, on my GTI the trunk is completely stuck (I can't open it from the inside slider either) can I still replace it? Or would it have to be opened first.
Hmmm I think you'd have to get it open somehow first just because you wouldn't be able to get the panels and bolts off without it open. Best of luck to you!
@@clintathusaz I see. Thanks. Hopefully somehow I can get it open.
Where can I find tat part
The video description has the part # and an Amazon link
Try having someone go inside and pushing it out while you try to open it. Mine felt stuck too for a bit but keep pulling on it (no pun intended)
anyone know if this will fit a 2016 gti?
It should.
Would it fit a 2012 golf TDI?
Is the latch still working?
Yep still working!
Do you think it will work for golf 7 2013 gt tsi?
I couldn't say. My guess is the latch design would be different.
@@clintathusazlooks like yours
Shows how little I know! I thought it was the previous body style and you even said 7. I would guess it would match up just fine then 😂
