  • Harley Davidson and reliability is something that has been debated by enthusiasts and daily riders for a long time. In this vlog we take the 2020 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Special in for a 35k service and talk about the reliability of Harley-Davidson and if you should be worried. We also will be making a change on the bike. I just hope it's a good decision.

    I use AMSOL in everything on my bike. Tried the Harley products but like the AMSOL best. I change all the main fluids every 5,000 miles regardless of when it tells you to change which is usually more mileages. Yes I changed my own with my husband teaching me. He passed away on June 25, 2022 so I will get a friend of ours to supervise me to help me remember how I need to do it. Hey, I’m 71 yrs old & have CRS, 😋😋. It comes along with the age, 😜😜

    Not too long ago, HD would rebuild your top end under warranty with new pistons, rings, and cylinders if you were burning a quart every 1500 miles. (that’s what happened to Kevin’s trike at DK Custom Products). And the reason they did, was because that should never be happening - that’s an excessive amount of oil getting past the rings. Typically that’s because the motor was severely overheated one time, and the low-tension rings lost their seal and the cylinders were glazed smooth. Do that just one time, and you now own an oil burner. The new HD tech bulletin stating that burning a quart in 1500 miles is “normal” is only to cover HD’s butt and avoid valid warranty claims. Looking at this in automotive terms, a V-8 truck engine (with four times the number of cylinders as a Harley) would be considered “normal” if it burned 4 QUARTS of oil every 1500 miles! That’s effectively what your two- cylinder motor is doing.

      I started off with a 2020, Electra Glide standard that would use half a quart of the Harley 20/50 synthetic oil if I rode at a steady speed of 75 mph for just 80 miles. If I rode at a constant speed of 70 mph no oil was used even if I rode at that speed all day. I later bought a 2019 Road Glide Ultra that started off with a 114-inch engine that would use half a quart of Harley synthetic, 20/50 synthetic oil if I rode 80 miles round trip at a steady speed of 75 mph. No oil was used if I rode at a constant highway speed of 70 mph though or all day at that speed. I later had a Woods 22X cam installed, Fuel Moto, RTX, two into one exhaust, dyno tuned Power Vision, Ventilator Extreme air cleaner, S&S lifters, and lifter cuffs, Fueling oil pump and Fueling backing plate, Fueling vented dipstick, DK Customs head vents in a catch can on my 114-inch engine. Riding 80 miles round trip at 75 mph I would use half a quart of the Harley 20/50, synthetic oil but no oil was used if I rode all day at 70 mph. I had the exact same amount of Harley 20/50, synthetic oil used when I had 128-inch build installed. The Harley owner's manual says to use the Harley 360, 60-weight, non-synthetic oil when the outside temps are 70 degrees. Harley 360, 50 weight, non-synthetic oil when the outside temps are 60 degrees. Harley 20/50 non-synthetic when the outside temps are 50 degrees. When the outside temps are 40 degrees use Harley 20/50 synthetic oil. Since I switched from the Harley 20/50, synthetic oil to the Harley 360, 60-weight, non-synthetic oil I can ride all day at a steady speed of 80 mph now.

    I think also worth noting. Service everywhere has degraded. Getting something fixed right has always been a roll of the dice. However the odds getting it fixed correctly have gone down. No matter what brand you have. I was at my local Honda dealership yesterday it looked like it was in disarray. It been there 50 yrs. They had 4 E-bikes, New African Twin and a used Harley on the showroom floor. Ive see better selections at yard sales.

    Got to Sturgis on Monday afternoon after a 1047-mile ride. Thursday night was headed home in a uhaul pulling my bike on a trailer. So much for my 60th birthday 3-week vacation in a cabin at Sturgis. 2018 Fortune Silver Electra Glide Ultra Classic with 48074 miles on it. Was heading from Custer to Black Hills HD doing 45MPH when the rear cylinder ACR= automatic compression release blew out of the head. The bike is still under warranty, but they were only doing brakes/ tire changes and oil changes- no warranty work. So, I headed home and the good folks at Gold Rush HD in Elko NV. got my "Penny" running again. Just got back from Reno Fall Street Vibrations and Tomorrow it's off to Vegas Hogs n Heifer's bike shows. Sadly, the Vegas Bikefest isn't happening for the 3rd year now.

    The Million Dollar Bogan (MDB) has been one of the BEST ambassadors for Harley-Davidson’s motorcycles. It’s unfortunate that HD doesn’t acknowledge the MDB by at least giving him a T-shirt. MDB makes me want to buy more HDMCs.

      They actually donated some stuff to his bike while he was preparing in US for his second trip to Mexico and further to South America. But I would say it is too little to late. Part of that is the current target of the company and its CEO. He wants only electric Harleys in future, they focus more on making dealers some butique shops and most importantly he wants H&D to be logo just for the most rich. MDB is a rich, but ride as blue collar worker. That's the history they want to get rid off.....

    When I bought my 2020 Road King, I bit the bullet (even more) and bought the prepaid service plan. I've been running synthetic from the first oil change, and had no idea that the engine might be noisier. Thanks for pointing that out. I've also been having my bike serviced every 2500 miles, since it's already paid for, and I just had the 15K service done. Yeah, it's probably overkill, but I wanted to give myself the best chance for longevity as this is my first Harley and, at 68 years old, will probably be my last. Anyway, no problems with the bike so far, no plans for engine upgrades as the 107 has more power and torque than I need.

    I have a 19 RGS with 52K on it. Being a 19 model is still had the old/bad oil pump in it. I upgraded my cam to a Red Shift 468 so when I did that I added an S&S oil pump, cam plate and lifters and used a Power Vision to tune it, all courtesy of Fuel Moto so the warranty was voided pretty quickly. I have run Amsoil in all three holes since the 1K service and it hasn’t seen a Harley dealership since the 1K service. I do all the work on my bike myself and haven’t had any problems. It does appear that the 2020 oil pumps are much better my buddy has a 2020 RG Limited and he has had zero problems. I really wish I could be at the stubborn American but I just got back from a 3k trip through Colorado, didn’t plan that out very well. Be safe looking forward to seeing your vlogs from the party.

    What reliability I've had a 17 road king that blew a head gasket at 10,000 miles because of a scratch on the head from the factory. Had the gas cap seal fail and dump gas all over tank while riding in stugis. Had the clutch sensor go bad because i got caught in the rain. Bought a 20 road glide limited thinking i just had a lemon. That bike burnt oil from day one. They refused to rebuild it till 7k miles. It needed an entire top end by then. Within 4k miles had to go back in for valve stem seals now it only burn 2 quarts every 5k miles. Harley davidson says thats within tolerance. Now it rattles on start up because the timing chain tensioner sticks. Not a problem says harley davidson not gonna fix it under warranty. Now my heated grips only work intermittently as well. I have the maintenance service plan all maintenance is done on time by a dealership, and yes it's synthetic oil. There's no excuse in this day and age for a 30k vehicle to be in the shop 2to3 months a year.

    I own and ride an old 02 carbureted Electra Glide with Stage 1 and 2 and have never had any issues with it, but I am anal about maintaining the old girl. I do my own maintenance only because I want to know that the proper attention is being given. And yes, I would take her cross country if I wanted to. However, I also own a well maintained GoldWing and never ever worry about taking her out on long trips. It’s all about routine maintenance. Any man made machine is subject to failure.

    Reliability doesn't affect sales much because (most) modern HD buyers are old and very well off so toy money is not a problem. If it breaks, throw more money at it and install a bigger engine since it's a toy not a tool. For used buyers HDs being so easy to work on and having the biggest aftermarket of any brand more than compensates for any issues. For example I'm still fixing Twin Cam timing chain shoe problems because so many owners never heard of them, but the work is easy to DIY (any real motorcyclist is also a mechanic) so that doesn't hurt used sales. Despite all those roached engines HD sold everything it could produce in that era.

    All I can say is that I've put 30k on Ultra limited in 3 years. 3k on 6 day trip just last week bringing total mileage to 38k.
    Only one issue, the thermostat crapped out at 10k. That's it.
    & i didn't buy the extended warranty when i bought it.
    I just stay on top of my maintenence.
    My friends M109 with 16k - clutch crapped out on him last week.
    If it's mechanical is going to break at some point.

      Thinner motor oil from slightly lower viscosity = higher oil flow / recirculation rates and a slightly lower observed oil pressure because of the increased oil flow rates to all engine parts. Usually temps will drop 10 to 20F observed. So that's the best benefit of a fully synthetic motor oil. Don't over heat it, and the additives stay in the oil and don't get roasted and cooked out of the oil causing the oil to become ineffective. Overheating any motor oil is bad for it. Don't run your bike really hard when it's hot out, slow down, take it easy, and lower your fuel consumption rate throttling bak and your oil will stay cooler.

    With all due respect, oil consumption is why I sold my 2018 ultra limited and will never own another HD product. Oil consumption with modern manufacturing capabilities is unacceptable and absolute BS when Harley says it’s normal. Go buy a Honda Goldwing and beat that crap out of it, it will not consume oil. I own an Indian and a Yamaha, neither consume oil. My two cents…..

    I really wanted to own a harley but&$#@?. The price compared to other bikes like the star venture from yamaha you compate it on any level with a harley and in the end its actually better as an air cooled v twin than the harley. The name is not worth 15000$. After 22000miles only replaced the key fob battery and the battery along with tires. No seat or any other upgrades but add ons like more deflectors for summer riding. My backing off from harley was price and reliability. Harley guys that told me to stay away because of that if I dont have a budget for repairs. I think thats why most harleys probably only do the vfw and poker runs.

    Myself and about a million other HD riders would strongly disagree with you about Harleys being reliable. I have had more than most over the last 3 decades. And one of my Harleys have been reliable. My 2003 VROD. I still have that one. All the air cooled TC motors have been basically junk. Never got more than 47k out of a TC engine without a major failure. Happy for the guy who got a million miles out of one. That is as rare as an honest politician. I have put over 100k miles each, on 3 different Goldwings. With only Oil changes, air filter and tires. And a couple of fork seals. Even the mighty M8 was a POS when it came out. The MoCo didn't get the oiling system right untill 2020. And they have been building V-Twins for over 100 years. Gonna take a whole lot more than a RUclipsr to make most of us feel any different. Best of luck on your trip. Good chance you will need it.

    • @Walker_Mcloud
      @Walker_Mcloud 8 месяцев назад

      I know this is a year later. But you've found 3 people that agree with you. A million seems a long shot. And 300k miles on a few goldwings is nothing great. Honda has been known for reliability. And no one is gonna argue that. Unless we are talking civics transmissions between i think 2004 and 2007. Which break down often. Message. Take care of your bike. And it'll take care of you. If it's a lemon. Take it back. The company will exchange it. No matter the product.

    Harley Roadglides are reliable with a lot of maintenance or what I would call part retirement and replacement, not just oil changes. Honda Goldwings are reliable with standard maintenance and not a lot of parts changing. There is a lot brand loyalty and denial in the bike world for some reason. Both bikes need maintenance. A Harley needs rebuilt much sooner than most endurance models of just about any japanese brand therefore Harleys are not as reliable. I could call my car forever-reliable if I replaced the engine every 100k miles because it needs 'regular maintenance'. It's not hard to figure out why honda, yamaha and other bikes are much more prevalent around the world where they are people's only mode of transportation. They are more reliable.

    • @fifthgearfoodie5272
      @fifthgearfoodie5272 Год назад

      Exactly. I’m not a Harley hater in the least bit but there’s a big difference between routine maintenance and repairs. Changing oil and tires is routine maintenance. Replacing engine parts is repair.

      Same sh*t the speedo does on my 2018 Sport Glide. Irritating as hell. HD has a new model ending in a "B" part number and it still does it on humid days when having lunch and the bike is parked in direct sunlight. Problem not resolved, can't see fuel gauge, or miles remaining on the tank of fuel, either. At least my bike is not burning oil running the Syn 3 20w-50 in the engine. Run HD 75-140 in primary and gear box... Only stuff that makes it easy to find neutral at a stop.

    Million Dollar Bogan has bought like 15 New Harley Davidsons.. If you want to look at HD's with a lot of miles on them Check out the two Bikes that Adam Sandoval rode to every HD Dealer in the Continental USA,
    If you want to talk about high milage and reliabiliyt Look at the Honda Gold Wing or Indian Challenger..
    In years past HD had really crappy wiring that failed a lot. Plus had always had Ignition problems .. Compensator Problems .. sumping Problems oil pump failures ect...
    With I supposed any full face Helmet you need the chin skirt in place..
