Hey yammie , can I ask a totally unrelated question? Which would be the better (more stable) bike for riding in windy conditions, as it’s always windy in Ireland, a ninja 650 or a gsx 650f? I’m guessing the gsx because it’s heavier? I hear ya sayin, that’s two totally unrelated questions, ok, totally unrelated question 3, which is the better bike in general? You can tell I’m a new rider can’t you? That’s kind of rhetorical but I just put a question mark on it just to confuse myself and possibly anybody that reads this.

I had the BMW 1200 LT (Light truck), the bike that became the 1600. Once the 1600 came out, the value of the 1200 took a beating. There are some great deals to be had on these used and for touring, you won't be disappointed. I never had a single repair to do on mine. The design did change post 1999 and it did not "become" the 1600. That is a totally different bike albeit still a touring bike. One major design change in the 2000 on bikes was the electric lift. The rake was changed as was the engine power output. There are probably many more on the bike that the "design didn't change"!

The most comfortable tourers were the loop frame Moto Guzzis of the 70's. The Ambassador 757cc could cruise at 90mph for hours. It held the 24 long distance record for several years. None of the other bikes could match it's distance even though they were faster as they had to stop too often to refuel. It's record wasn't broken until the Kawasaki Z1 900 came along.

I've been riding BMW RTs since the 1980s.
My first bike was a Honda CB400 (basically half a 750-four), my second was a naked BMW R65, and my third was a BMW R100RT and nothing but RTs ever since. Because the main thing I need a motorcycle for is my annual ride to SoCal, my annual ride to the Pacific Northwest, and whatever Bay Area travel I need to do that I can't do on BART/MUNI which isn't really a whole lot. So I don't ride much, but when I do it's a pretty long way and in the case of my summer vacation, a long time on the scenic route. So I want something that can carry my clothes and stuff from one hotel to the next and have fun on the winding (and occasionally twisty) roads in between.
You featured the GT, which is BMW's answer to the Hondabago (interesting that BMW, distinct for its boxer twins, uses an inline-6 for its premium tourer, while Honda, whose most iconic bike was an inline-4, uses a boxer-6 for its tour cycle...); both it, and its predecessor the LT, always seemed like too _much_ , while the RT was just right. And then you featured the GS, which I'll get back to.
With my first few (old, used) RTs, the seats were horrible, and the first thing I'd have to do when getting a new (to me) one was get a Corbin or Sargent's seat; but sometime in the '90s they got the seat right, and it was a glorious day. They are now one of my absolute favorite things to sit on, in any context.
My previous purchase was a 2007 model (1200 cc), the floor demo bought at a discount in 2008, which I rode until 2017. But I realized that I hadn't ridden it *at all* other than my couple trips per year, and it spent all the rest of the time sitting in the garage, which isn't good for the machine and is just kind of wasteful. So when it was time to sell it, I decided not to replace it and just rent an RT from the local BMW rental shop for my couple trips, and wait for an electric that could handle my Bay Area needs.
And that kind of worked for a couple of years, until this year when the shop decided to stop renting out the RT because *everyone wants the GS instead.* Me: Do they go off-road on them? Shop guy: No, they mainly stick to the asphalt. So I wound up renting the brand-new 1250 GS for my trip. The luggage was smaller, but adequate. The windscreen is not the electrically adjustable wonder of the RT, but it was adequate. The gas tank was 4.5 gallons instead of 6.5, and I actually got "range anxiety" during a couple legs of my trip (which this year combined the SoCal and Northwest into one big loop). The seat hurt after about 150 miles, in stark contrast to the RT seat. Basically everything about the GS that's different from the RT just reminded me how much I love the RT, how much it's the perfect tool for the job, for me.
So I just last month bought the 2019 R1250RT floor demo from the shop. Which means I guess I'll be riding internal combustion for another decade.

I went through the dilemma of RT vs GSA this last year when looking for a used bike for long range touring (No way am I paying the depreciation on a luxury item!) and it really came down to the fact that its unlikely that I'll every ride a GSA on anything less civilized than a few patches of gravel, and protection from the elements is a high priority for me. The GSA is a very capable and a subjectively a better looking bike, and I may get one some day, but the RT (2007 1200) has really grown on me. I've ridded a few GS and GSAs, and cannot figure out how they could be more comfortable than an RT.

Comfort is always a very subjective subject. Some people consider cruisers with forward controls the ultimate but to me that is a torture test. The water skiing position with 90% of your weight on your tailbone and no way to lift yourself up on the pegs while riding is close to being on a torture rack in my opinion. And yes I have owned a V rod, Dyna wide glide and Sportster 1200 Custom so...

Yep. I rode a GL1800 Goldwing for 11 years, and my friends just shake their head when I tell them my current Yamaha FJR1300 is more comfortable -- for me. But I have a bad back that hates sitting upright for mile after mile. The forward lean with my feel under me is very comfortable. Sitting bolt upright, especially with my feet way forward, is, as you say, torture.

Comparatively to some bikes yes that is probably true. It is a hell of a performer and an absolute joy to ride. Bike is skimming the front end in the first two gears. On the track it shifts out of 2nd at 100mph, with 4 more to go. Stable in the wind, pillions enjoy it too. Would recommend, but don't expect a lazy boy. I'd say it's comfort increases with speed lol. The Goldwing, and GLs of the last 20 years, are amazing machines. That motor is amazing. However, after 3 different rentals in 3 different states in last 10 years, I can’t recommend it for comfort. Hard seats don’t bother me, but if you over 6 feet tall, the inability to move your feet/legs in different potions is a deal breaker. The GL is low for sure, but the position of that 6 cylinder motor has my legs spread out like I’m at a gynecologist table. A old Honda tech told me years ago, “anyone can ride the ‘wing… but if you’re over 5’10, good luck”. But damn, that smooth awesome delivery of power on the GL is just amazing. There might not be a perfect motorcycle .. but it’s fun searching for one .
