Great vid sam. The old ground was indeed right opposite that row of houses. If you were watching a game from the bedroom window of the house with the plaque you would of been behind the goal.
One that sticks in my mind was 1974-75 last game of the season beating Blackpool 4-0 to win the Second Division and return to the First Division, 59000 and probably the best atmosphere at a game at OT.
Excellent video. Glad you mentioned you are not a Man Utd fan, but interested in Football history and old stadia. I am a Liverpool fan, and old enough (68) to have visited the old grounds now long gone. I loved old those old grounds, such as Burnden Park (Bolton) , Roker Park (Sunderland), White Hart Lane (Spurs), Goodison Park soon to be added to the list. One old ground I never liked was Wembley. One of my students lived right next to Roker Park. His Mam would get tickets for the Sunderland v Liverpool games and the family always made me welcome, proper Wearsiders. Roker Park was a grand old ground. I have always liked Sunderland. Calvin Palmer , Sunderland left back in 1972, once put me and my dog up for the night, as we were hitchhiking down from Scotland. Sadly Calvin had left Sunderland by the following season when they beat Leeds Utd in the FA Cup Final. He was a good bloke, but tended to fall out with his managers. Probably cos he was smarter than them. He died in 2014, very sad.

It is cool that you are making these videos🤩 Can you visit Fredrikstad Stadion and The Old Fredrikstad Stadion, it is an historical football club with 9 League Championships, 11 Norwegian Cups and they beat Ajax in 1960. It is two stadiums, the new and the old, the old was used from 1914 until it was demolished in 2013.
I grew up in Clayton and during the mid 90s to early 2000s me, my brother and our mates would walk to the velodrome (cycling centre) to play football during the summer holidays. Every year they'd have a football camp and all the local kids would go and play right next to to the spot where United's ground used to be. The football would either be set up in the car park, inside the velodrome or in Phillips park. Amazing memories, I hope that summer footie camp is still going strong 👍🏻
@@kdog9440 It was a demolition company made up of United fans that demolished Maine Road. I still have a newspaper photo of a group of their crew standing in the stadium holding pickaxes above their heads... tiptoe through the Kippax, with a pickaxe, as the song went... sad but true.

Man Utd's Old Trafford stadium that a bit of TLC won't cure. The original plague at Northampton Road was on the corner of 60s comprehensive school building, same shape has the bank st plaque I remember you could see it from the road, it was demolished in the 90s so probably was kept as a souvenir by someone, the original names of teams usually came from works teams like Newton heath, arsenal and west ham originate from factories, then you had church teams that came from teams like Everton , man city and Bolton, and teams created from cricket clubs, most teams had name changes so I wouldn't say these were a second formation date , there is a blue plaque for Man city's ground on Bennett st , when they were Ardwick FC but yet to spot it , Manchester Central FC was actually a third MCR team that successfully applied to join the league for the newly formed third division north but was blocked by city and United , central had Billy Meridith as a coach who had both city and United history connections , some say it was to protect United who were financially struggling at the time, but central was based in Bellevue much closer to the new Maine road stadium than old Trafford
I corrected a RUclipsr recently who put United's formation date at 1902, unaware that they'd changed their name. If the club was given a winding up order then unless the company went into liquidation, like Rangers did, and the saviours stepped in at the last minute to save the club then it's the same club. It upsets a lot of Rangers fans when I tell them that the new Rangers is a phoenix club and doesn't actually have any legal ties to the old one. So, in all honesty, the trophies that it claims to have won were won by the old club, which is now defunct. Anyway, my one and only trip to Old Trafford was in 1978 when they were celebrating their Centenary. It was a friendly against Real Madrid. I bought a United centenary scarf. Had it for years but don't know what happened to it since. That was until earlier this year when I took my granddaughter to watch the women's game against Everton. She likes to think of herself as a female Ronaldo.
Really enjoyed that, Sam. It's a nice change from videos looking solely at the club's modern era. I know you're based in Scotland but Arsenal's history and development would make for an interesting video. When I first started to become interested in football Manchester United were in decline and were actually relegated to the old second division, but they bounced straight back and eventually regained their mojo.
I'm very late to this, but there is actually a plaque for the first stadium. I work in those offices, and it's around the side of the Fujitsu offices, behind the car park - unfortunately it's very hard to find and not really publicly accessible
You’ve got me wanna change my content mate purely so I can go on one of these trips with ya 😂 I do love all these videos man, from Scotland to Ireland to England to Portugal and beyond, thanks for the tours/info and more Sam 🤙🏼
Brilliant video, great to see where our old grounds are. In terms of when our foundation was, the club celebrated the centenary in 2002, so they consider the formation to be when they became Manchester United in 1902
@@Sergio-ig1xd True, I attended the Centenary match against Real Madrid at Old Trafford that year. Jimmy Greenhoff played a blinder and we won 4-1 as I recall.
@@tohellorbarbados7119 I wouldn't know about that pal. I only know that it was celebrated in '78 as a mate's little brother was a ball boy at the swamp at that time.
It wasn't the centenary it's was just 100 years of the name change, just like it was the ground centenary in 2010, most of the English Clubs have had name change or dropped a part of the name like Southampton st marys, it would only be a new club with a new formation year ,if the team went out of business completely and Start up again or if 2 teams amalgamated like Inverness Carley thistle, some would question is Glasgow rangers the same team after going into administration and dropping down the divisions but they still have the same badge ground and 1872 formation and honours record
There used to be a school on Northampton Rd, with a proper circular plaque on it. I don't know if the plaque was re-sited when the school was knocked down as part of the land clearance work to build the shiny offices there now. I live about 3 miles away from there. Northampton Rd is not far from FC United's new ground, Broadhurst Park, which incorporates a storey of large railway sleepers as a nod to the roots of Manchester football.
Haha, yeah just one video at home before getting back on the road. I'll be back in Scotland late next week ready for the new season. I must admit... I've missed covering the weird & wonderful grounds in Scotland!
The plaque is/was on the wall of the left hand Fujitsu building closest to the car park entrance. I work in the middle of the 3 Fujitsu buildings & it was there when I last looked!
Great vid Sam! Interesting story regarding the first period of success. United signed 4 top players from City after the Blues landed in trouble for illegal payments to the players.
@@tohellorbarbados7119 True, for illegal payments to players but your lot quickly caught on to being bent and you've been doing it ever since. Have a nice Sunday pal.
Fujitsu service building, that the same Fujitsu who develop Horizon software that helped lead postal workers to jail, bankruptcy and suicide. Might want to alter or remove that plaque.
Manchester Central were a separate team. Their story is short but interesting. At one point they had a higher attendance than United and City and played at a stadium in Bel Vue. A much smaller version of Central still exists today. Check their history out as it could be a great video to make one day.
Gutted you couldn't make the Cork City V Galway United yesterday. Top of the table clash in the 1st Division. 6,500 sellout and pyro everywhere. Hopefully you can visit Turner's Cross when we pick up the title.
Old Trafford really needs modernisation. The main stand has always been the problem because of the railway line next to it .Being a United fan I love ❤️ the place 🔴⚪️⚫️
Be careful what you wish for, a new ground to replace and improve the capacity would be best part of a billion add that to what the glazers have shackled us with, most of our stadium is less than 35 year old, probably the oldest section is k stand which was built in 72 , a lot clubs ran their stadium in to the ground, I remember speaking to a Bolton fan in the late 80s and said the ground needs new stands, he said they need to get it right on the green stuff before they invest in new concrete and plastic seats , that's the advice we need to be following at the moment
Newton Heath were never photographed in a yellow and green halved kit and there is no evidence to suggest one ever existed. The suggestion of a green and gold halved shirt was a marketing ploy by Umbro in 1994
The oldest part of the old Trafford stadium, is the old tunnel on the half way line, which as far as I am aware part of the original Archibald Leitch design, to walk down that tunnels where Meredith, the babes and law and best walked down sends a shiver down my spine even now
If you would have walked up the street where you asked the guy on bank street you would have come to North road and the plaque is still there. You were right that they started in Newton heath but North road is closer to bank street.
When are you gonna do a video on The World Famous City Ground? I reckon first day of the new Premier League season, first time in 23 years we been there. You’ll love it! 🌳🔴⚪️

There's an completed stadium design on WHF!🔰@UtdWesleyy with a comment stating: So apparently we are looking at an expansion of Old Trafford. It’s been talked about for years but put off because of the complications around the south section of the stadium but if we do manage to do it…🔴 2 Tier SBC Capacity: 88,000+ We're sure that can be achieved with minimal fuss by observation cos its already laid out going by our walk around the stadium experience. The first Stadium on North /Northampton Road was the site of The Original Red plaque it was on the side of the Former Moston Brook High School ,It was stolen during the Summer school holidays in 1982 , It had been moved from being 20 feet off the Ground to nearly 50/60 feet, To unsuccessfully stop people stealing it .
Fantastic video, cheers!
See you were back in Scotland for a long time 🤣🤣. Really enjoy all heritage videos. Great as always
Haha, yeah just one video at home before getting back on the road. I'll be back in Scotland late next week ready for the new season. I must admit... I've missed covering the weird & wonderful grounds in Scotland!
Great video Sam, time for a video at Anfield again. Explain the Kopp and its history.
Really enjoyed this , thanks
Great video loved this as a Man U fan
Top video Sam. Thank you for showing us all these places we might not all get to 🤝
The plaque is/was on the wall of the left hand Fujitsu building closest to the car park entrance. I work in the middle of the 3 Fujitsu buildings & it was there when I last looked!
Ahhhh no way, I missed it!! Thanks for letting me know. I’ll have to check it out next time I’m in Manchester!
Thanks mate, I'll be round with a ladder tonight...
Family are all from around Clayton and my dad actually grew up on Bank Street. Needless to say, the area's changed beyond all recognition.
Great vid Sam!
Interesting story regarding the first period of success. United signed 4 top players from City after the Blues landed in trouble for illegal payments to the players.
@michael corrigan, and those 4 players enabled them to win their first trophy.
@@Sergio-ig1xd True. City were bent even back then... don't blame me, you started it...
@@tohellorbarbados7119 True, for illegal payments to players but your lot quickly caught on to being bent and you've been doing it ever since. Have a nice Sunday pal.
Attend the afc Wimbledon match friendly tomorrow to see the stadium 😊
green and gold until were sold!
Fujitsu service building, that the same Fujitsu who develop Horizon software that helped lead postal workers to jail, bankruptcy and suicide. Might want to alter or remove that plaque.
Thanks it was very informative...i am man utd fan..
The training ground was on the field behind Himley road on Clayton vale
Do one on Stockport county mate George best played for us and we on a big journey back up the league's again
My love since 2008! Newton Heath Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Football Club♥
There was a school built at North rd that had a plaque on it. That was demolished for the current building
Manchester Central were a separate team. Their story is short but interesting. At one point they had a higher attendance than United and City and played at a stadium in Bel Vue. A much smaller version of Central still exists today. Check their history out as it could be a great video to make one day.
I love these vids ( exploring old stadiums)
Great content mate, really enjoy your vids👍
Love the vids my friend
Wow first match for the second stadium was against Burnley *insert mark goldbridge clip here*
You should do a flog on Manchester Central FC Sam ....... interesting history
Both the clubs were really close back in the day. Two clubs from industrial areas.
I never knew that there had two home I am going to Manchester in September so I am definitely going to be meet the place of where the old stadiums was
Quality video
Newton Heath were never photographed in a yellow and green halved kit and there is no evidence to suggest one ever existed. The suggestion of a green and gold halved shirt was a marketing ploy by Umbro in 1994
Very enjoyable content
Manchester City’s first stadium was only just over a mile from Bank Street on Hyde Road aswell, quite strange how it’s worked out
That's Northampton Road there was a school there Moston Brook high school
Thank you
Grimsby Town history!!! please
Knew all the history, but not the location of the old grounds, great Video 🔴⚪️⚫️
The oldest part of the old Trafford stadium, is the old tunnel on the half way line, which as far as I am aware part of the original Archibald Leitch design, to walk down that tunnels where Meredith, the babes and law and best walked down sends a shiver down my spine even now
Qpr have had 13 permanent home stadiums. Think most in english football. That would be some video
Green and Gold until we're sold
Man U played their first ever game as Man U at The Northome, home of Gainsborough Trinity.
Oh wow
Newton heath🥵🥵🥵🔰🔰🔰🔰
If you would have walked up the street where you asked the guy on bank street you would have come to North road and the plaque is still there. You were right that they started in Newton heath but North road is closer to bank street.
I am a Spurs fans, but I like this video
Im from barnsley in Yorkshire and now live in fleetwood in lancashire
When are you gonna do a video on The World Famous City Ground? I reckon first day of the new Premier League season, first time in 23 years we been there. You’ll love it! 🌳🔴⚪️
We want an Expansion to approx 90K capacity, Modern refurbishment & a Levelled Retractable New Roof!
There's an completed stadium design on WHF!🔰@UtdWesleyy with a comment stating: So apparently we are looking at an expansion of Old Trafford. It’s been talked about for years but put off because of the complications around the south section of the stadium but if we do manage to do it…🔴 2 Tier SBC Capacity: 88,000+
We're sure that can be achieved with minimal fuss by observation cos its already laid out going by our walk around the stadium experience.
Take Note: The Stadium Must Not Exceed the rail way track!
Worth a view, please share!
The first Stadium on North /Northampton Road was the site of The Original Red plaque it was on the side of the Former
Moston Brook High School ,It was stolen during the Summer school holidays in 1982 , It had been moved from being 20 feet off the Ground to nearly 50/60 feet, To unsuccessfully stop people stealing it . This plaque was a big metallic plaque. Not a cheap Plastic one How do I know this ? I was a pupil there from 1981 to 1985 !! There was a Sister of the Former Man utd player Remi Moses at the school when it changed from a All boys to a mixed school, I remember she was a City fan .
Like you have with N.Ireland and R.Ireland have a look at the west 1st division
this guy is so underrated
You can see the emptyhad from the area where the first ground was you can see it it this video
Am sure we used to be Accrington stanley to
I was hoping you’d have done Norwich City & the history of their stadiums
