    The automatic life jackets have a little piece of chalk in them that dissolves when it contacts water. Than that opens a valve so the life jacket can inflate

    I use a manual one for swimming. After five years the blow tube broke off so I bought another and tested the new one with the old and rusty C02 canister from the broken one. It inflated pronto once I pulled hard enough. It was less the force than to know which direction to pull in - away from the C02 canister mouth.

    When I had a houseboat, I'd run a life vest drill so everyone knew how to put on a vest"Just like putting on a coat & jerk on the cord to inflate it."
    I'd add"Anyone inflating the vest must wear it all day." but I really just had them wear it until we'd cleared the marina & I'd hand the steering over to a guest while I showed how to replace the CO2 cartridge & deflate the vest.

    One note of caution: Self inflating life jackets SHOULD NEVER BE USED if a capsize could result in a person being trapped under or inside the craft.
    I know of at least two fatalities (in the UK) resulting from the above. Jacket inflated, trapped them against the craft & they drowned before they could deflate & swim out.

    how do the ones that always hold the air work, the air is being contained in either the tank or the balloon yet only in the balloon does it float, how does that work?

    • @jameswood8389
      @jameswood8389 3 года назад +2

      When the air is in the tank it is compressed, so it has a much higher density. This means it is not buoyant. However, when it is inflated, the density of the air decreases as it has room to expand, so it becomes buoyant.

    • @ccyn042
      @ccyn042 3 года назад +2

      Yes, the co2 cylinders have expiration dates, and the whole vest needs regular inspection.
      This includes manually inflating the jacket to make sure the bladder holds air, checking for corrosion on the cylinder, wear on the jacket itself, etc.
      USCG has a document called “we’re not inflating the importance of this message” that goes over some key things to look for when inspecting an inflatable life jacket.
      PS Re: using it only for emergencies, I try to keep in mind that emergencies are never planned. Best to have it on at all times when on the water.

    • @apackwestbound5946
      @apackwestbound5946 Год назад +1

      Sometimes people are also injured/incapacitated when they fall overboard (shock, blunt trauma, bleed out, burns among other causes). Not all life jackets are designed to turn a person face up and/or face out of the water if unconscious or incapacitated. Hypothermia is also fatal and the life jacket offers little to no protection against the effects of hypothermia. Life jackets are an important safety item and should be worn. My reply was an attempt to answer the question why some perish while wearing the jacket and NOT a reason/excuse/justification to not wear one.

    Wheres your crotch strap? Inflatable lifejackets should always be worn with one to stop them riding up when inflated in the water!
    The colours of your toggles are also the wrong way round as Yellow signifies Manual and Red signifies automatic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! well at least it is everywhere else in the world outside America, also it is not recommended to attach your kill cord to your lifejacket either.

      Inflatable vests have to be operated in order to work.
      A foam vest just has to be put on in order to work.
      A non swimmer falling overboard might not remember how to inflate the vest while trying to stay afloat.
      Is that clearer?

      That's where standard foam vests come in.
