The loop at the bottom opposite side of the Velcro is actually a rod holding solution. The butt goes in the loop, and the Velcro strap goes over the rod. It’s been brought over from fly fishing vests. The rod is then held hands free diagonally across your body. The more you know…

I bought a Chinook and I like it a lot! I've always been surprised that even on hot summer days I still have never felt overheated wearing it and I have the forest green model. I have wanted to get the knife NRS makes but I had read some reviews that kept me from jumping off. Glad you guys mention PFDs because even decent swimmers can find themselves in a bad situation. There are a number of people that drown every single year at the reservoir 10 min from my house and those deaths are preventable. I swim just fine but the pfd goes on me before my feet touch the launch.

It arrived today and I got to say it's the best fitting vest I have ever tried on. Can't wait for spring to give this thing a full day of fishing test. Thanks guys

I have the OT one and love it (I would even wear it bank fishing cause it holds all my tools) but wish it had a lash tab. I have my knive on a ring, tab would be much better. The other plus is if you have an AutoPilot, the remote fits in the pocket and the leash can go up all those keepers to the top ring making it very accessable, tethered, but out of the way when not needed. Good stuff guys.

Totally agree. I have the Chinook. 2, actually. I had the one like yours, but then got the next version -- just because I liked the new pockets more! They are both great, and I keep the old one as a spare. Mine are bright orange to help locate me in case rescue is necessary.
One note: while it may be true that the "neck pillow" could keep your head above water if unconscious and on your back, but what if you were face down? The Chinook is a Type III but I believe it's a Type V that is designed to keep your head above water? Not to question your terrific expertise!

when i got my kayak the dealer threw in a stohlquist fit that i used for years. no technical features, minimal adjustment, full back. it kept me safe and nothing else.
i recently upgraded to an nrs chinook and it's the biggest quality of life improvement i've made on the kayak. the fit and mesh back make it way more comfortable and all the pockets make keeping tools, whistles, fishing license, etc much easier. in the event you haven't already you should absolutely spring for one.

With all those pockets and attachment points I can still carry lip grippers, scissors, pliers, hooks, tackle, leader line, etc... That little strap on the chest of the Old Town PFD, wouldn't that be for "hands-free" when you are standing and doing a re-tie or changing gear the rod could be secured to the vest so it doesn't fall to the ground or into the water?

My PFD from one season to the next had a major problem. The pocket zippers did not work. I had my whistle and other important things in the pockets. Bass boaters never wear the gear that would help them in a wipeout. Lifejackets usually just keep their carcass floating after their head bounces off the console or gun'l and breaks open after the nosedive spin they pulled across someone's wake at 90mph.
