    Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have an Onkyo TX-NR686 that HDMI output stopped working on. I actually have new capacitors arriving today that I was preparing to replace the existing capacitors with, but I was just continuing to check videos to see what pitfalls to avoid when doing the replacement when I came across this video. A simple unplug and replug and suddenly my receiver is back to life!

I am a DIY researcher n builder w tools and experience, so I will definitely look at that inner hdmi cable, unless a 10 min + un-plug n re-plug, ... or then unit reset fixes my problem....It would be nice I can get my unit working properly again. Already scanned options for a replacement. Will report back here too for the networking in lessons cause :+)

    I have an onkyo TX-NR555 and it initially had a lot of problems such as not connecting to Bluetooth and no sound on some inputs. I did a firmware update on it and everything works on it now except that there is only video and no audio from the HDMI port #2. The other HDMI ports work good with both video and audio. Swapping the input cables from HDMI 1 to 2, the no audio problem stays with that port. Does this sound like a very easy fix to you? Would you suspect a bad solder connection on the port, a processor problem, or possibly something as simple as just a setting? Is this one of those receivers that you can select a different audio source such as optical when using HDMI? The manual I found online wasn't very clear to me. Thanks

      Thank you for the comment, steve.
      Remote troubleshooting is always difficult, but it becomes manageable with more information, so I appreciate your initial diagnostics.
      1. Yes, settings are the first thing to check and are often the culprit
      2. It is probably not a processor problem unless: #1 it is the ARC or #2 all the outputs coming from the same processor are out (which I doubt is your problem, but you can trace leads when looking at the HDMI controller board)
      3. It could be an unseated leg off that processor, I suppose...
      4. I like the idea of it being a sloppy solder point from the processor to the HDMI connector. Sometimes, with the HDMI port active, you can wiggle the cable while it's inside the port and you'll get intermittent output (you should try that!)
      -Regarding the HDMI v Optical, I could be wrong but... your unit likely auto-detects between the two (located on the same phase) and favors one over the other (so don't have an optical AND HDMI both plugged into SAT/CBL when testing, for example)
      -Lastly, don't forget the usual stuff: Try different devices on each port, make sure they don't have volume on 0 or mute, etc.
      I really shouldn't type this much, my apologies :P Let me know what you find out!

      Thank you for the comment, Jose. That's a really nice receiver. Let's take a strategic approach to your issue:
      1. Is this a brand new receiver or did it previously work as you expected? If it's brand new, just return it :) If it used to work, I like that you tried multiple blu-ray players.
      2. Did you try multiple HDMI cables? Some are of lesser quality, some have HDCP compliance conflicts, etc.
      3. Next, I think it is worth a try opening it up and examining the hardware. If the receiver is set up similar to mine (with the HDMI interlink), try my easy fix! :)
      4. If it doesn't or is an older unit, you may be looking forward to swapping capacitors or re-balling chipsets (I provided links below my video for these)
      Let me know how things turn out, Jose, and have a great week!

    • @VestigialVoice
      @VestigialVoice  4 года назад

      Thank you for the comment, Harshal.
      1. What were the circumstances in which it stopped working?
      2. Do you have any sound coming out of any of the HDMI outputs?
      3. Using a thermometer, were you able to verify heating the processor(s) on the HDMI board enough to re-melt the solder in the BGA?
      If yes (to #3), it is time to test the capacitors. Pull the board out as there are some on the underbelly.
      If you have a MESR-100, it will save you time by not having to remove the caps for testing.
      Good luck, my friend. You have a challenge on your hands.

Everything else seems to be fine, when we watch normal TV it does work, but it's a shame that when we want to watch a movie on the Netflix App or something, we can't have the surround we did have before. Dang, steve, you are flexing some dolla dollar bills!
      Did you purchase this as a used-item or did it previously work for you and then stop (if so, what were the circumstances)?
      The short answer:
      If it's still under warranty, let someone else deal with it.
      If it's outside of warranty, while it may not work, give my fix a shot... It literally only takes a couple minutes with limited tools.
      **I've never worked on that particular model and am curious if it carries the same design flaw as the one in this video**
      As always, make sure to do the simple things as well though: try multiple devices on each of the ports, make sure volume is not set at zero or mute, etc.
      Thank you for sharing your experience and visiting my channel!
      I look forward to hearing your results :)

      @@VestigialVoice Thank you for the quick reply. I purchased the item new in 2011??? It worked fine until random speakers began to drop away, came back, and now completely gone. I used 4 nautilus style fans sitting above the unit to blow air out the front and back of the cabinet. I cut the majority out of the back of the cabinet to increase air flow, leaving only the perimeter around to hold a cabinet sides square. I spoke to an Electronic's repair facility who indicated Onkyo no longer sells these boards and so this looks like my only option. I described the repair and they said they no longer attempt this type of repair because it doesn't typically last that long. Perhaps they're not heating the chip long enough or using a heat sink in the repair.
      I will order the repair items and let you know if my attempt is successful. Thanks so much.

      You're welcome, steve.
      I feel as if we went through a particularly dark-era of poor quality control with the emergence of HDMI. I hope we have popped through the other side but have very little evidence of this just yet.
      Check out the two links I placed in the video's description.
      You may end up getting lucky and just have to replace a few surface-mount capacitors, otherwise, reheating ball-grid arrays usually only yield temporary success unless you rig a new way to cool the processor, kind of what you are talking about with additional fans or heatsinks.
      Good luck, my friend :)

    ok I am having sort of the same issue but I can plug my iPhone in and get sound, and I can plug my laptop in through the HDMI and still get sound. But when I plug it into the TV, no sound... • @VestigialVoice
      @VestigialVoice  3 года назад

      Thanks for the comment, jessica.
      The long answer is: It is so easy to try, why wouldn't you?
      The short answer is: It probably won't help.
      Especially if you are getting audio and video using other devices through that same HDMI input.
      My guess is that the problem lies at the interface between the receiver and TV, so make sure to do the easy things: Check your settings. Make sure the TV isn't on mute, etc.
      Other questions I would have as a troubleshooter:
      1. Is this a brand new unit?
      2. Did it EVER work?
      3. Does it work using different inputs?
      4. Does it pass video?
      I hope some of these ideas help you out :)
      Have a great weekend!

    Is this also the case when getting the 'HDMI Start-Up' comes on at power up. The 2nd zone HDMI seems to be working, but connections to the HDMI ARC output kills all audio & video sources except AM/FM.. I’ve heard that the OSD is somehow relevant. The HDMI ARC has an OSD, but the 2nd zone does not.

      Thank you for the comment, Brendan.
      Some people get lucky, and then there's the rest of us...
      A large number of problems with this (and frankly any) receiver stem from the incompatibility of the non-uniform ARC and CEC formats.
      It is a known and recognized manufacturer problem without a great solution (see previous comments from other frustrated users).
      Did it initially function properly and then stop working?
      Occasionally cache-clearing or factory resets will offer temporary fixes and then, somewhere in the software coding, it will fail to recognize the device again.
      In my setup, I avoid using ARC and instead run audio through an optical cable. I know, this is both sub-optimal and an unfair compromise.
      If you stumble across a fix, I'd love to hear about it.

      Brother Tim! It pains me to say this, but I have some bad news. While ARC is supposed to be a standardized format, CEC (consumer electronic control), is not. Therein lies well-known, but unfixed incompatibilities. A mounting, frustrated community has put together solutions that sometimes work with different combinations of televisions and receivers. Frankly, some of these solutions (like cache-clearing and factory reset) often only offer temporary fixes and then, somewhere in the software coding, it fails to recognize the device again.
      In my setup, I avoid using ARC and instead run audio through an optical cable. I know, this is both sub-optimal and an unfair compromise.

      So, you are asking my opinion, it's easy and only takes a couple minutes: Certainly try it as a starting point. If it doesn't fix a single one of your issues, you'll have to explore tracings and capacitors or perhaps even re-ball your video processor chip.

      You're right. It's pretty common for these receivers to kick out a lot of heat.
      I want to believe they have been engineered to be heat-tolerant, but if you are looking to mitigate the risk of ruining irreplaceable components, perhaps processors, you are welcome to apply thermal compound and affix a heatsink to the chip's surface.
      I've never gone so far as to mount a "silent" fan, but I know people who have done this in gaming consoles that experience BGA issues.
      It goes without saying (but I'm going to say it anyway) that you should always keep the vents unobstructed and in an area with proper air circulation, not stuffed in an entertainment cabinet. Thank you for the comment, Wee.

      Wait a minute, has your PS3 ever successfully passed both audio and video through that particular receiver?
      The reason I ask is because PS3 has a restrictive HDCP laced into its HDMI signal.
      If that's the only device giving you problems on that HDMI port, you may have better luck purchasing an inexpensive HDMI splitter that will strip away the copy protection.

      Hi Mudi,
      Which Onkyo model did you get?
      I exercise caution with FW updates. Do you have a GOOD reason to run the update(does some function not properly work, etc)?
      Some receivers, notoriously Onkyo, do not handle updates well...
      Make sure your USB is formatted using FAT32 file structure.
      Lastly, the receiver may have a force-firmware-update button combination (similar to forced-reset).
      Good luck 🍀

      We have entered a culture of acceptance with software updates coming, at times, on a weekly basis for all our mobile devices. As you've probably experienced, most of the time, they provide improvements, but occasionally they introduce new problems.
      I'm undoubtedly a bit biased, hearing about the times when things go wrong, and there's been a block of years where new firmware carried an unacceptably high risk of brick-ing these AV receivers.
      If updating has already proven to not be as seamless as expected, please carefully consider what the actual benefit would be to you, as the risk (with updating) probably lies around 5%.
      Of course, ultimately it's your choice.
      Please hit me back with your final results. You've got a beautiful sounding receiver, Mudi! 😊

    Hey Man, thx for the video.
    I have a problem with my onkyo tx nr626 receiver and my Samsung 65" QLED.
    Onkyo and my 10 year old Panasonic worked great. But since I changed TV a bumch of problems started occurring. First was that my tv keps switching back to its speakers instead of sending the output to recivers/speakers. I fixed that by switching the HDMI to the eARC hdmi port on the tv.
    The problem I have know is that on some occasions my picture just stops working for a second or two. Then comes back. And it can do that several times over and over again. I turn the tv off and the receiver off. Switch the receiver back on first. And then the tv and it usually works. But still get that 2s black screen(sound continues to work). Whenever this happens the Onkyo receiver starts blinking for HDMI and PCM. Any idea what to do? Ive tried factory reset on both devices and switched HDMI cable already

    • @VestigialVoice
      @VestigialVoice  2 года назад +1

      Hi Bajjeee, does that only happen with the new ARC HDMI port you've started using which is located on the TV?
      If that's the case, it points my troubleshooting toward:
      1. A software incompatibility of ARC (as coding is non-standardized and varies from manufacturer to model to device; quite annoying if you ask me). This problem is typically NOT fixable except via updates, if you are lucky, but sometimes those updates screw things up worse.
      -or-
      2. A loose solder joint on the aging Panasonic television (VERY fixable with a skilled hand)
      **Getting back to your original problem, were you running TV audio via the HDMI cable down to your receiver? If your TV has the option, I've completely switched over to running audio from the TV to the receiver via an OPTICAL CABLE. Drop the volume of the TV to ZERO (not mute) and then output to your receiver.
      The only drawback is that fidelity maxes out at 5.1 surround, but that's all the speakers that I have set up.
      Good luck, my man 🍀

    • @Bajjeee
      @Bajjeee 2 года назад

      @@VestigialVoice Thx for the reply. It worked great with the Panasonic. Never had any issues.
      Its With the new samsung QLED is when the problems started occurring. When I used another HDMI port then my TV kept switching back the sound to the tv speakers and still did this blackscreen problem. By using the eARC port the speaker problem atleast disappeared. I use my PC as my media player. Netflix and RUclips through the chrome browser. Kids watch youtube alot. The Problems really show themselves around white screens for eg. Chrome homepage or youtube homepage where the majority of the screen is white. When you double click and have a full screen it happens seldom. Thats why it so strange.
      Both receiver and TV are firmware updated to the latest versions

    • @VestigialVoice
      @VestigialVoice  2 года назад +1

      Gotcha.
      Let's be clear: Just because all updates have been performed DOESN'T exclude that it may be an ARC incompatibility.
      That being said, the beauty of the QLED technology is it's ability to handle whites, which is why when you bring up the white screen issue, I wonder if it is fooling the receiver into thinking the signal has been terminated...
      Go into the TV settings and switch PICTURE MODE to STANDARD.
      If that doesn't help, you can certainly toggle the GAME MODE setting as well.

    • @Bajjeee
      @Bajjeee 2 года назад

      Bought a new HDMI cable. So now I have the same from PC > Onkyo > Samsung QLED.
      While being behind the receiver I noticed that the TXNR626 have designated 4K ports and that I wasnt using one of them.
      So I switched my input from the PC to a 4K port on the receiver. All settings which are power reducing are off! So far so good!
      Ive done all of the steps which usually triggers the black screen. So im praying now. For my mental health and wallet.
      Because I swear if that shit starts again. Imma loose it! and I rather have my mental health in place than money. So Id just go buy a new soundbar or some shit.

    Hi. I have problems with my Onkyo TX-NR 585. No sound through HDMI with some devices. First of all, perfect sound through the smart TV through ARC to the receiver, I even have a cable TV decoder connected from it to the TV and that analog signal passes through ARC to the receiver and it sounds perfect, but it is not heard nothing if I connect my Bluray player or my computer to the receiver. I checked for a misconfiguration on the receiver but everything seems fine. I did factory reset, also updated to the latest firmware. Tried different cables, different HDMI ports, tested different TVs with and without ARC, tested on a projector but no sound. What problem do I have? Please help me. Thanks.

      Hi Gediman,
      It sounds like you've done some good troubleshooting, but let me get this straight..
      1. The Cable TV works via ARC, but then when you plug in the bluray player, the Cable TV audio stops working? Is that correct?
      2. Does the Cable TV work (both audio and video) in all HDMI ports?
      3. Does the Bluray player not work in any of the HDMI ports?
      4. Does the Bluray player work perfectly when plugged directly into a TV?
      Hit me back and perhaps we can better pinpoint your problem.

      @@VestigialVoice Bluray and PC always worked fine previously, the problem started when there was a power outage and the receiver went into NG mode: lcrslsrblbr. I did the factory reset to solve that problem and it has never happened again but from there the audio problem started. The only sound through HDMI that I can get is to the tv speakers, both in the pc and in the bluray player. I do this by turning CEC OFF and Audio TV Out ON. Maybe it means that the receiver, despite recognizing the speakers through HDMI, is not able to provide them with sound, although the sound is fine on Analogue RCA cables. or maybe since HDMI sound is only allowed if CEC is on I don't know if it's a problem with CEC. Before the blackout, everything worked fine.

    • @VestigialVoice
      @VestigialVoice  2 года назад +1

      I like the way you problem-solve, Gediman!
      So, it certainly could be that a component was damaged during the power surge / outage which would be a significantly more difficult fix, and the fact that you received the NG:LCRSLSRBLBR error tells us that the unit experienced a threshold of heat worthy of going into protection mode... but the whole situation does still reek of a "settings problem."
      As you probably know, when you reset your system, saved settings are often wiped out, and may not even return to the original "factory settings" as you experienced when you first pulled it out of the box.
      1. Sometimes the receiver sets priority (so try the Bluray player when the cable TV is NOT plugged into any HDMI)
      2. Sometimes the signal gets sent out to a different Zone (I don't know why...)
      3. Sometimes the receiver anticipates that the signal is going to run through an external amplifier
      4. And, of course, toggle through the "HDMI Passthrough" and "PCM" settings
      I'm sure there are loads of other software settings to troubleshoot, but no more come to mind at this very moment.
      If nothing else, I run all my hardware into the TV inputs and then output everything via optical to the receiver. Sure, it can only handle 5.1, but that's all my stereo system is set up for, and it is WAY less button-pressing for kids (and me) to fumble through.
      Good luck, my friend. Keep me posted on the conclusion to this story 🙏

    • @VestigialVoice
      @VestigialVoice  3 года назад

      Hi Kevin,
      Sounds like a software incompatibility, perhaps Netflix' app through Apple TV uses a codec that your receiver does not support.
      Is this a new issue? Did it ever work (aka did it work for a while and then suddenly stop)? Is Apple TV connected wirelessly or via HDMI?
      As you can imagine, remote troubleshooting is difficult, but I'd start by checking the settings in the Netflix app, however, I don't think there will be much flexibility there. Next, cycle through all your receiver's audio settings.
      What happens if you bypass the receiver, will your TV process the audio signal?
      What happens if you use a DIFFERENT receiver?
      I'll stop spit-balling ideas, but that should get you started.
      Good luck, my friend 🍀

      Troubleshooting offsite is always more difficult, but I have a few questions and comments before you open it up: Does the display still work? Make sure to try it on multiple setups. Test to see if it works with a different TV, test all the HDMIs, if it has bluetooth: will it produce sound? Is there any mode that you can get sound production? Another big one: will it work with optical input? The problem that I most commonly see with ONKYO receivers from this era (aside from user-error) is loss of HDMI functionality, input and output. I look forward to hearing from you soon, bud :)
