@@theeLonelyRedPanda It will probably end on that mystery. It's similar to Shin Gojira's tail evolving to produce mini-humanzillas to battle the human resistance. We will never know...
While Yamazaki will probably get the director's chair again, I seriously doubt it will be a direct sequel. It'll probably be another timeline, and more of a straight forward monster vs monster film.

The scene with the Bikini Atoll is to show how Godzilla became... Godzilla.
It's not necessarily them killing Godzilla, it's more about how Godzilla became the monster he is. Cause Godzilla has high story allegory to nuclear power it's to show that Godzilla's existence is caused by the nuclear bombs.
At least for me, that’s how I see this scene

you can see the blast moving towards Noriko and Koichi and then you can see it going the other direction, i believe someone called it Over pressuring, another person called it a Blowback Phenomenon, I thought that was pretty cool, its one of the key points i noticed from this movie

it occurred to me the attention to certain details conveys a more threatening Godzilla than previous ones:
when the atomic breath goes off, the music cuts out. it carried the same gravity of seriousness as The Snap from Avengers Infinity war.
second, the charging up color is very much akin to Cherenkov radiation, that light blue glow as radiation exceeds the speed of light for the medium it is in. which also ties into the spines acting like fuel rods.
the third is applying chemistry and physics to its full potential by utilizing aspects to weaponize nature to exert the forces mankind itself cannot control. first sudden compression slowed godzilla in his tracks, and then the decompression sickness exerted tissue damage, which is an observable phenomenon

Their first battle with Godzilla in the ocean is very much like the final confrontation in Jaws, only this time “Smile you son of a…” doesn’t work. And their final confrontation with Godzilla is very reminiscent of the barrel sequence with the shark: “Not with three barrels, he can’t!”
And I love how the fleet of boats that helped raise Godzilla in the end: I’m pretty sure that’s the fleet of wooden boats originally assigned to clear mines, the ones that were sent out as bait for Godzilla, and they’re the ones to do him in at the end.

As a kid, I was a huge fan of Godzilla because I mean, he’s literally the coolest thing ever to a 6 year old. As I got older though, learned history and put more thought into the why of Godzilla, this is what Godzilla really is. Don’t get me wrong, the monsterverse is fun and all, but Godzilla is the manifestation of a nations trauma in the wake of unprecedented destruction (not commenting on the right or wrong of it, just what was). The nuclear powered beast was the closest thing Japan could get to some tangible concept of what had happened to them and, by making it this physical creature, allowed them some ability to cope and heal by destroying it.

Good reaction! The unique thing about Godzilla unlike most other pop culture icons like Spider-Man & Batman is that while there are slight changes to each interpretation, they all remain consistent to who they are and their personalities. Godzilla is a rare instant where he can be anything depending on the interpretation. He can be a hero/savior like in the Monsterverse or even the 1960’s to 70’s era of movies, a antihero, or the antagonist like in the original 1954 film or Minus One yet we still enjoy the character. Even in the ones where’s he’s the villain, there is always a sense of tragedy in that he in a way was a victim of nuclear testings that mutated/scarred him to become vengeful against humanity, blaming them (a nod to how the original was based on Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki). We see that he only attacked the soldiers in the beginning of this movie because they shot at him and defending the island. The novel of Minus One stated that pre mutated Godzilla had a symbiotic relationship with the natives and he brings them fish and they give him food in return. Then the bomb turned him aggressive. He’s been a father, and big enough to have battled Kong, the Power Rangers, Marvel, & DC characters. He’s the King! ^^

I’m sorry if it’s already mentioned here but I believe Clariss wondered if this Godzilla was bigger than the one in the monsterverse films. I too had wondered about his size here and did a little research and it turns out that this Godzilla is supposed to be 164 feet tall which was the same size as the one in the 1954 film. The Monsterverse Godzilla in “King of the Monsters” is supposed to be 394 feet tall! That makes him 2.4 times larger than the one here. What I like about this Godzilla is that he physically is very reminiscent of the classic films I grew up watching except he doesn’t look like a man in. Godzilla suit.
