The real monster is the director…not in a negative way but the fact that he directed, wrote, AND did the visual effects for this movie!!! That’s a beast right there!!!
First Godzilla since the original that I gave a damn about the humans. 😂 I go into Legendary Godzilla movies prepared to turn my brain off for good fun. This movie had me tearing up multiple times.
The fact that the film's budget was less than $15 mil will always blow my mind. Hollywood has a higher budget and most of its CGI doesn't look anywhere near as good as this.
You might be confusing CGI with practical effects. The practical effects make things seem better but take longer to set up & execute (at least from what I've heard & seem) This is why Pacific Rim still has that amazing look / feel cuz it mixed a lot of practical & cgi effects. (Man I wish they made a sequel)
Tachibana was a mechanic for the Kamikaze Suicide Squad. He had been maintaining the flying coffins of his friends who took off and never returned. Although it is not depicted in the movie, I think he must have been very sad. Shikishima was also a member of the suicide squad, but he did not take off. Shikishima tried to detonate himself with Godzilla as atonement for the war, but Tachibana gave him a way to live. Tachibana was finally able to make arrangements for his friends to survive.
girl seeing me emotionless watching Jack die to "save" Rose in Titanic : Why are you so heartless?? me watching Godzilla : minus one alone at home = Cries watching a failed Kamikaze pilot having PTSD and survivor guilt so much that he thinks he doesn't deserve happiness.. and heart broken for him because he got his hope trampled by Godzilla again. AND THEN cries again when the mechanic telling him to "LIVE", it was both of them letting go their past and moving on.. and finally a broken mess when Noriko ask him "Is your war... finally over?"
I watched this in the theater with a half full audience, and it was one of the best experiences at a movie. Full of audible reactions, and cheers at the end. We had no idea what we were in for.
ok so the fish that keep popping up are deep-sea fish used to oceanic pressure. They look like that because surfacing pressure change has literally forced them to puke their guts out.
I love the fact that apart from the beginning and a brief dream sequence none of the attacks were at night, and none during a storm or had weird color filters. Just broad daylight and with bright vivid colors.
The scene at the end, where Godzilla uses his "Atomic Breath" and the camera transitions from the side of Godzilla to right in front of him is amazing.
I remember in my theater, you could hear someone yell “goddamn” during that shot, which was accentuated by the massive silence both on screen and from the audience that followed
I am Japanese. A film director gave a TV interview about Godzilla's walk on land. He said that he was very worried about it because Godzilla is a creature, but it is a being close to God that is beyond human knowledge, so it would be wrong to make it move like a dinosaur or a lizard. Therefore, it is different from the way we can easily imagine dinosaurs and lizards walk.
This Godzilla is so twisted by the radiation that its not a creature of nature anymore. The strange, stilted way that it walks after the mutation, as if every step outside of the water is painful, as if its own body doesn't fit it anymore, reflects what an abomination it's become. I wouldn't be surprised if the unnatural weight of Goji's body was cracking it's own bones as it moved , and just healing them quickly enough that it doesn't fall.
Mello's reaction was priceless in this one. The shock, the awe, the amazement, the emotion... Imagine actually seeing it in theaters. It was AMAZING! So good. The cast was amazing. The Oscar winning effects were amazing (I actually cried when they won). This movie had me feeling all the emotions. I can't wait for the sequel.
So a kamikaze is basically a suicide pilot. They purposely crash their planes into the enemy. That's why he pretended something was wrong with the plane. He didn't want to kill himself.
@@happyteedz4626 that's one of the main conflict about MC. He was a coward, afraid of death, and hiding behind his parent's wish. He was fine skipping his last duty because the war has ended anyway. But after first godzilla attack and meeting Sumiko, he realized that he's just a worthless piece of worm that doesn't deserve to live. Part of him wanted to return so he can die on the battlefield, part of him still scared of death. These are the two ghost that kept haunting him every sleep. After Noriko's death, he felt an anger so great that he lost one of his ghost (being scared of death), but that just made him suicidal. Later though, he also managed to lost his other ghost (wanting to die), not because he was afraid of death, but because of his daughter.
Takashi Yamazaki who was the director, writer, and VFX supervisor for this film was told by Steven Spielberg that not only did he love it, he saw this film in IMAX 3 times. He also confirmed that the black substance crawling up Noriko’s neck in the final shot was in fact Godzilla’s cells, implying that she was able to survive because she had mostly regenerated just like Godzilla. And she likely got those cells because the news voiceover said parts of Godzilla came off him when he was being shot at by the tanks.

Finally, a reactor that pointed out the salute respect the Japanese had toward their worthy foe in the end. It was a beautiful moment among many others.
Great stuff! Two reasons why Godzilla moves slow. One, simple physics. Two, the survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki reported other survivors walking slowly, as in a trance. Directors wanted Godzilla to move this way also in order to reflect his origin.
After the first year, post war Japan had very little crime within the nation. It's largely a cultural thing, but the first houses in the neighborhoods to rebuild for the most part weren't robbed or even vandalized.
During the 2011 Tohoku earthquake that created the infamous Tsunami that destroyed Fukushima Nuclear plant, there was also no LOOTING. That's the Japanese people. That's one aspect of their culture that many notice.
Well, it finally hit Netflix. Godzilla Minus One is the greatest Godzilla film ever made. I saw this film in the theater. It was a great experience. Great reaction Mello! 👍🏿
Watched this movie twice in the theater and man, those atomic breath scenes were wild. The scene where godzilla is charging up for the last time and the movie turns silent, I swear no one even breathed in the theater, it was so quiet. Truly a beautiful movie
Best reaction I've seen to this. Absolutely loved how you got every single beat and had it affect you (making you excited, terrified, and sad/happy). Outstanding! The directer has said because it was so successful he is going to make a sequel and do it with a monster for him to fight. Not sure if it's going to be another monster created by radiation, by Godzilla's atomic breath, or maybe an alien organism like they were going to do with the Griffin instead of the Matthew Broderick movie. I'd love to see him take the death of Godzilla in this as a way to mellow out his hatred of mankind. Maybe since he lost his brain in the explosion he doesn't remember being burned by men. Doesn't have to be man's defender, but just more neutral because there's obviously NOTHING they can do to stop him if he wants to destroy cities and kill. But another creature infringing on his territory? That is enough reason for him to fight.
It was so worth seeing this movie in theaters! It was such a surreal experience ❤ definitely one of if not the best Godzilla movie I have ever seen in my life! It made me sob my eyes out, This movie definitely deserved the Oscar!! Godzilla is the scariest he’s ever been and the characters are so incredible! The action is intense and amazing! I love your reaction so much! Thank you for watching this masterpiece!!✨♥️😊 As a Godzilla fan, you can’t ask for more.
acting (ALL the actors), writing (story and dialogue), directing, cinematography, music score, special visual effects, special sound effects... this movie has won many awards around the world! If it had been nominated for more than just the one category at the Oscars (special visual effects), it would have won every category it would have been entered with! I hope that for the next generation of film makers, universities would use Godzilla Minus One as an example of film making perfection!
I have seen G-1 five times in the theater, the last being Minus Color. Every time Noriko gets blasted in the Ginza attack, it always gets me. By the way, Noriko is not the only one to have survived, as the damaged Godzilla skins falling to those injured were also revived; hence, Noriko was almost fully recovered. On a minor note, the radiated black rain that fell on Shikishima may have contributed to his black eye's fast healing, where the Kid’s arm remained in a sling by the film's end. Finally, Godzilla walked like that because the filmmaker pays tribute to the men in the G-suits as CGI takes over the kaiju role.
Your reaction was amazing. Had the same experience with the Ginza attack. Devastating. The shot with Godzilla swagging, roaring in celebration/admiring his mushroom cloud is the best shot I've seen in Godzilla history, and I've see them all. And so evil on his part. Movie is a masterpiece as you say. A revelation. I saw it 7 times in the theater.
Who would have thought that a Godzillza movie would become a beautiful love story . The acting of the main characters was amazing and the little girl was such a darling. And you Mello your reaction was truly emotional one of your best made me cry. So until the next one ❤
This movie had me enthralled beginning to end! And that salute really got me. He didn’t die for the war because he had to live for this one. He thought he was a failure but kamikaze wasn’t his destiny. That movie was a word for me. I was hype as hell when they salute him and seeing Noriko really tied everything together. One of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. I need a movie series from this director and hopefully the cast somehow.
The line "can this war of yours be finally done" is not the original line. Noriko at the end said "is your war finally over?" Which would have made more impact on you since he always keeps saying "my war isnt over yet". It sucks because of the closed captioning.
This is one of the few movies where the English dub is actually pretty good. They stayed close to the original subtitles and the acting was solid. Still not as good, but a worthy alternative if you're a slow reader or want to enjoy the movie without having to keep looking away from what's happening.
One thing that I've noticed when I saw it in theatre and when I watch reviews is everyone is super excited to see Godzilla use his atomic breath, but when the actual detonation occurs, everyone is gobsmacked by the sheer force of it... Its genuinely terrifying.
The deep sea fish seen at the beginning at the film described how they were going to beat Godzilla. Next level foreshadowing. Those "testicle" looking fish was what deep sea fish look like when brought to the surface too quickly. Decompression causes the innards of the fish to balloon out of their mouths.
I can always count on Mell’s videos to not only be apart of my everyday life but an essential at this point. Been watching since 2022, thankful that I came across your channel. Keep up the great work Mell!!🙏🏾🤞🏾
Interesting. These subtitles are not the ones I had. Those are deep ocean fish, and I assume they decompressed so quickly that their swim bladders came out of their mouths. I think the reason the large Gojira moved the way they did was due to exponential, and possibly asymmetrical growth. At the beginning, the smaller, dinosaur-like Gojira was more fluid and nimble.
There’s no shame in not being familiar with terms from 80 years ago. If you’d like to know: Kamikazes were pilots whose missions it were to crash their plane into US ships in an act of sacrifice. While they didn’t always carry out their mission if they failed multiple times they were seen as cowards. At the end the MC displayed that he was finally willing to sacrifice himself and thus found redemption in the eyes of the engineer
What makes this one of the best godzilla movies is how deeply you care about the humans in the story. Its very rare when the human story is so compelling.
What an amazing reaction video! First time I’ve come across your channel and I loved that you didn’t hold back on emotion. I literally reacted the exact same way you did in every scene! New subscriber 🙌🏻
23:33 that roar is my favorite of the movie. The way Godzilla looked when he roared as if he was answering her “ YES IT’S ME!” 27:24 my second favorite roar of the movie. The way Godzilla’s hand clinches as he roars.
The deep sea fish with the "something" sticking out of their mouth is their swim bladder. When a deep sea fish is brought up fast it's swim bladder expands out of their mouths.
The movie balanced the line between human moments and epic/emotionally draining monster moments perfectly Also the buildup for Godzilla’s atomic breath is executed perfectly and to great effect
People other than Japanese who saw this movie were probably surprised, right? Why does a Godzilla movie, which is supposed to be a fun monster movie, make me cry? and. In fact, the Japanese original Godzilla has had many variations over its 70-year history, and some of them even have plots similar to those in the Monsterverse. Recommended ones are Godzilla (1954), King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962), and Godzilla Final Wars. , Mechagodzilla vs. Godzilla, etc., I think are very interesting.
This movie was Fantastic & I positively loved how Godzilla shoots out his atomic breath which the dorsal plates shift outwards from its body is a references to Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001) because the Godzilla suit used in that film had a mechanism to also shift its dorsal plates up - "Minus One" is a reference to how Japan had been devastated by WWII sending them to Zero but then when Godzilla attacks then they went into the negative - The roar they used in this movie is the original Godzilla roar over loud speakers & recorded the audio - Koichi is maybe a reference to Koichi Kawakita the special effects director of the late '80 to '90s Godzilla films while as for Shikishima comes from the squadron that conducted the first successful kamikaze attack called "Shikishima Squadron"
Second favorite movie of last year behind Oppenheimer for me. This film is beautiful in its writing. The effects are fantastic especially for the low budget but for me, that was just the icing on the cake.
It's finally on Netflix in America. Also, you have the option of watching it in the original Japanese language, or in the American dubbed version. I prefer the original Japanese language version.

So glad you did this reaction! Love your videos bro!
Mell, my dude.
When you start to tear up, I do as well 😂
Bro! I absolutely love the way you get all into a movie. Absolutely enjoy your reactions. Phenomenal movie.
this movie is gold from our century! awesome job TOHO!!
Oh this reaction is gonna be good. Such a amazing movie and a great way to celebrate Godzilla 70th anniversary. Takashi yamazaki you rule 🥳🎉🎊
If you watch all the way to the end you can hear Godzilla footsteps coming
Seeing this movie in the theater was such a fun experience. Looking forward to seeing your reaction!
There’s no shame in not being familiar with terms from 80 years ago. If you’d like to know: Kamikazes were pilots whose missions it were to crash their plane into US ships in an act of sacrifice. While they didn’t always carry out their mission if they failed multiple times they were seen as cowards. At the end the MC displayed that he was finally willing to sacrifice himself and thus found redemption in the eyes of the engineer
we were waiting for this one fam
That "NO" was so legit
The key to making an excellent Godzilla film is for the focus to be on the human characters and what they’re going through; not on the monster.
At the end Noriko was supposed to ask "Is your War over?" Not whatever she asked in this subbing.
The subbing is wrong all over the place in this translation lol
Netflix
@@HelloMellowXVI kamikaze=suicide bomber
You Patrick the star lookin aah
This movie is so good, I dont even know what my second favorite Godzilla movie is anymore.
Pacific Rim 😅
Facts 😂
First view! First comment! Mell! You helped inspire us. Great work dude! Thank you for helping us get inspired to make our video reactions!
Absolutely fantastic reaction ❤😊by far the best Godzilla film made in the spirit of the OG content ❤😊
yea i felt exactly the same way watching this masterpiece for the first time. very nice video! thank you for this!
The way Godzilla looked when he roared as if he was answering her “ YES IT’S ME!”
27:24 my second favorite roar of the movie. The way Godzilla’s hand clinches as he roars.
The deep sea fish with the "something" sticking out of their mouth is their swim bladder. When a deep sea fish is brought up fast it's swim bladder expands out of their mouths.
It's honestly great how you mentioned Christopher Nolan because if you think about it. Godzilla Minus One can be a spiritual sequel to Oppenheimer.
I love your videos. Your reaction, especially at the end, literally brought me to tears.
I lost it when he posed for the camera 😂😂
The movie balanced the line between human moments and epic/emotionally draining monster moments perfectly
Also the buildup for Godzilla’s atomic breath is executed perfectly and to great effect
*Thanks for such an amazing reaction to this wonderful film!*
This movie was Fantastic & I positively loved how Godzilla shoots out his atomic breath which the dorsal plates shift outwards from its body is a references to Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001) because the Godzilla suit used in that film had a mechanism to also shift its dorsal plates up
- "Minus One" is a reference to how Japan had been devastated by WWII sending them to Zero but then when Godzilla attacks then they went into the negative
- The roar they used in this movie is the original Godzilla roar over loud speakers & recorded the audio
- Koichi is maybe a reference to Koichi Kawakita the special effects director of the late '80 to '90s Godzilla films while as for Shikishima comes from the squadron that conducted the first successful kamikaze attack called "Shikishima Squadron"
This is one of the greatest Godzilla films ever made.
Hey greeting from Puerto Rico man I wish success in your career great reaction as always keep it up
Great reaction !! I really enjoyed your reaction!!
I just subscribed to you, you and i had the same reaction basically it was the first Godzilla movie i cried at
Second favorite movie of last year behind Oppenheimer for me. This film is beautiful in its writing. The effects are fantastic especially for the low budget but for me, that was just the icing on the cake.
Technically Godzilla is a sequel to that 😂
Some of your best intros lately fr, new and old meshing well
We’ve been waiting for you to watch this masterpiece
AGREED
It's finally on Netflix in America. Also, you have the option of watching it in the original Japanese language, or in the American dubbed version. I prefer the original Japanese language version.
It most definitely is not a masterpiece.
Godzilla getting shot like he was in a BET movie....I lost it...still trying to pick up my rib!
What a great time to be a Godzilla fan I used to get teased as a kid for being a huge Godzilla fan 🔥
I got teased too
Well look who’s laughing now
琴線が日本人に近いナイスリアクターじゃないか!ありがとう!
Best reaction yet. Every time you cried, I cried.
I absolutely loveddd this movie lol. My husband and I just watched it a few weeks ago after trying to find it. I was literally sobbing at the end🥴😂
Yyyeeesssss. Love this movie they did a great job. Everyone please stay safe and blessed much love from San Antonio. He was just angry at everyone 😂😂😂
Kamikaze translates to Divine Wind
They were pilots who flew their planes into boats and essentially became bombs themselves.
They were highly effective against Allied naval assets.
Great reaction 👍👍
the wind that stopped Mongol navy twice
most of them hit carriers and battleships too.
