"You... stay. I... go. No following." "Superman." Those scenes make me cry everytime. Such an underrated classic. It's a shame it flopped when it originally came out.
Well, it may have flopped in theaters, but it more than made up for it when it came to VHS sales, which is how most kids at the time saw this movie. Now it's considered to be one of the greatest animated movies of all time. The Iron Giant was actually the first movie I ever saw in theaters back in 1999. I was only three years old!
One of my favorite mini-themes of this movie is the representation of Toxic masculinity through Kent, and Positive (true) masculinity through Dean. Kent is set up to be the ultimate "american man"(tm), but he's aggressive, self-important, cowardly, and apathetic towards the people he's supposed to protect. He shows no respect for anyone other than himself and when it comes down to it, he won't think twice about running away to save himself. Dean on the other hand is empathetic, confident, intelligent, and incredibly brave when faced with danger. He got close to Hogarth because he saw a young boy in need of a mentor and took up the task selflessly (not to get with his mom, which is often a motivation used for other characters who try to get close to the main child character). He empathized with the Giant and Hogarth enough to keep their secret, but he was also cautious enough to step in and protect Hogarth when things got dangerous. Even when faced with certain nuclear death, he was ready to stay and comfort Hogarth and his mom in their final moments. Men...be like Dean. We need more Deans and less Kents in the world.
Brad Bird took the basic Ted Hughes book "The Iron Man" and tied it into the murder of his sister. He wrote it to ask the question what if a gun had a soul. Warner brothers didn't realise what they had until the test screenings, but didn't put any money into marketing it, instead choosing to promote a live action movies. On a personal note, it is easily one of the best animations in recent times (arguably ever). It is deep, complex and funny as well as poignant and heartfelt.
Also a fun little thing about the film: One of the producers of the film was Pete Townsend of The Who, who had previously made a concept album based on the Ted Hughes book.
Probably already been said but if it hasn't here it be. The story came about thru tragedy of the loss thru gun violence and the question was brought up what if the "gun" had a conscious/soul. And here we are.
The dream scene was NOT in the VHS when it was first released or in the theaters. I remember when this movie came out and they definitely did not have the scene of the other iron giants in war mode. So when the moment came where the giant lost it was like a BIG shocker back then!
I loved the way this animation was made. The attention to detail is incredible and everything flows so well that it is a timeless work of art. The screenwriter is to be congratulated, the characters and the story manage to be as fantastical as they are realistic and, certainly, many film aficionados took the references in the design of the Giant. So many movies about alien invasion and all combined into one character, I always love watching such a perfect piece of work. I am very grateful to have another opportunity to watch this wonder and until the next opportunity 🫡
Love You Clariss and Tim, The Iron Giant shows us a lot about having relationships for someone and the bump on the head of the iron giant made him forget about his destructive ways even Hogarth helped him become a better person.
This is unquestionably my favorite animated movie of all time. I watched it when it was new in the theaters 25 years ago. I have never been able to watch the missile scene without tearing up. Not once.
Hey, Clariss. Just a quick note. The town of Rockwell is a tribute to the America of artist Norman Rockwell. It represents that time of a wholesome era and small town values that are a source of pride for many people. The world has become too big for many0 people. We have become smaller and our values are much diminished. But there is still hope for people who work to instill in each other the idea that we still need to care for each other . There is an animated movie from Don Bluth called THE SECRET OF N.I.MH. He worked at Disney during the 197o's during a period when the films had lost some of their magic and wonder. He formed his own company to recapture the heart he felt was missing after the death of Walt Disney. THE SECRET OF N.I.M.H. was his first film. It has a bit of a dark tone, but it is beautiful to watch. Bluth would follow up with a string of hit movies in the 198o's like, AN AMERICAN TAIL, ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN, and THE LAND BEFORE TIME to mention a few. Great review. Animated films with heart are valuable because we are all children at one time and can appreciate that these themes touch something inside that reminds us of our innocence. Keep going and enjoy the movies.
This movie only covers the basic half story of the story it comes from, the rest of the story is about a Space-Bat-Angel-Dragon creature from space the size of Australia and the Iron Man (as he is called) having a incredibly creative battle with it to protect the earth.
Watched this as a kid, always was top in my family. We talked about it all the time. Still is one of the best shows. Kinda reminds me of "Balto" movie too. Give it a watch if you haven't, it's so nuanced and adult in it's theme.
Still my favorite childhood movie❤ In high school, I actually wrote 9 metal songs based on this movie😂 It’s just so funny, wholesome, and it’s understanding of war are phenomenal.
Another underrated animated gem is 1997's Cats Don't Dance. It was never properly marketed and released to theaters but it's easy to find online, even here on RUclips.
@@jediknightgeo Oh, come on. The Iron Giant was not treated well when it was first released, certainly not as well as it deserved to be. The film was a commercial failure, largely because Warner Bros. did not properly market it.
@otaku-sempai2197 Right, it was a commercial failure, but that's not the same as it being underrated. When the movie came out, those who saw it rated it with universal acclaim, and that has only gotten bigger with every person that sees it. It was overlooked, not underrated. There's a difference.
Hi Clariss , Very happy to see your reaction with husband tim. I even saw you reaction with him on his channel 2. I grew up watching this movie as a kid but you're reaction together was the best thanks for watching it. Can't believe Vin diesel voices the character And I have a lego iron giant mini figure from ebay. It's really cool !!! And you might want to watch movie ( ready player one ) the characters in it.
This was the third of three animated films released by Warner Bros. in 1999 (The first two being 'Quest for Camelot', and 'Cats Don't Dance') Since neither of those films did well at the box office (It didn't help that this was also the year that Episode One of George Lucas's space opera was released), the decision was made not to put any marketing behind this film (very little advertising, no toys, etc. To this day, I hope those who made this decision are still looking for work...) As a result, this movie snuck into and out of theaters, but was easily one of the best films of the year. To add insult to injury, the Academy did not have a 'Best Animated Feature' category for films released in 1999... The director (Brad Bird) went on to direct 'The Incredibles' for Pixar, among other things... (This movie was subtly referenced in 'The Incredibles', as the Jet that Helen flies has the call sign 'India Golf Niner Niner' (IG99)as a tribute to this film)
In animated films, it usually shows the antagonist in prison or in custody at the end. Iron Giant did a fast forward in time at the end, did not show Mansley. He tried killing a child, ignored orders, functionally couped his superior for the purposes of nuking US soil, tried deserting his post, was engaged in trespassing, kidnapping, conspiracy, treason, etc. All of this at the height of tension in the Cold War... Mansley was 100% executed.
Fun fact: the old men from the train are Frank and Ollie! Two legendary animators from the early days of Disney. They have various cameos (sometimes just visual, sometimes vocal) in a bunch of animated shows and movies. They also show up in The Incredibles, the two older guys talking about “old school heroics” after the big final fight.
You know it's bad when this is a better Superman movie than any live action thing we've had this century. 25:35 This was a deleted scene originally. His memories and like prime directive are trying to come back and it's clearly the bump on his head that made him forget. Also, whatever aliens sent him here miscalculated and he landed in the middle of some mountain town rather than some metropolis where humans would just start shooting at, triggering his attack protocol.
This movie is one of my favorites not only gets me to cry and emotional but laughs too also when I was little I had a iron giant figure that my dad got me I lost in storage when we moved
Hey, I absolutely love your videos Clariss! I very highly recommend you react to Society of the Snow! I also recommend keeping a box of tissues on hand, cause it’s a very heavy film.

Clariss, you are such an entertaining and relatable Reactor… you are insightful and allow yourself to be present and engaged… you are considerate… And, unfortunately, this guy is just… not. He is not any of those things you are, nor does he possess (as a Reactor) the qualities that have come to define your channel, and it makes your reaction videos with him difficult to watch, and nearly impossible to enjoy. While I’m sure he’s a nice person and a good friend to you (and his style of reacting works to entertain his fan-base) I really think you benefit from solo-reactions, which allow you to be immersed without unnecessary distractions. All love to you, thank you for your work!
