+SlipknotMaggot0526 Agreed! Have been really enjoying this series. Wish they could do more of these. And Randy Pobst just really knows what he's talking about and has great insight.
I can't help but suspect that Porsche geared the GT4 long to handicap it against the 911 range. Shorten the gears a decent amount and this car would be significantly quicker to 60, 1/4 mile, and lap times.
+Zygrene Yours is the only logical explanation of that long gearing I have heard to this point. Porsche apparently have claimed that they geared it long so it's drivers wouldn't have to do a lot of upshifting when overtaking. I read that in a review of this car on the internet. That is bullcrap. Someone here said it is geared that way for top speed. That is even bigger bullcrap. So the best explanation that actually makes a lot of sense I've heard so far is yours.
+Christos Segkounas Yeah those reasons make no sense. Overtaking is about acceleration, which would be quicker with shorter gearing. The top speed excuse is silly too. On most race tracks the GT4 will never hit 150mph, which is still achievable with much shorter gearing. Sixth sense is telling me it's gotta be a handicap. I hope someone drops in a shorter final drive and does a comparison vs stock.
If it understeers, they should have reduced the setting on the front anti roll bar, increase the rear one, and take some of the rear wing down to reduce downforce in the rear. Everything on this car is adjustable, so you can make it drive exactly as you want.
+derbigpr500 Around 2:39 he said that he would add another hole to the rear sway bar to stiffen it up even more, meaning that it was already set as stiff as they could set it. I would assume they also adjusted the front sway bar and rear wing.
your trying to compare a high momentum car with this...a low momentum meaning most of the weight sits behind the driver. by decreasing the front you be understeering much more because the rear already is pushing and front not enough stiffness to handle the back.
+B00steDevil That is not correct. Anti-roll bars influence the wheel load difference between the inner and outer wheel on that axle. For example: A stiffer anti-roll bar increases the wheel load difference. The outer wheel is loaded more and the load on the inner wheel is reduced more. Due to the tyre characteristics the amount of side force won on the outer wheel can't compensate the amount of side force you lose on the inner wheel. Therefore the slip angle on the front axle for a certain amount of force has to be increased. This means that the the difference between the slip angles on front and rear axle increases and the driver needs to increase his steering angle. The car understeers more. Contrary to that a softer anti-roll bar in the front reduces understeer. However the anti-roll bars in the front and rear should always be changed in opposite directions simultaneously if you want the keep the same amount of body roll. I hope you can make at least some sense of this.
+fesch198 the stiffer the anti roll bar, the more force is required to cause body roll. So the stiffer an anti roll bar is the smaller the disparity in wheel load is between the inner and outer wheels.
Could not agree more with your rank list Motor Trend. Really liked the video and how many thoughts you guys put into placing them on the board. I enjoyed it, so thank you for that. Watched probably all of your videos, but this one makes me wanna subscribe the channel. Keep up the good work.
Man I've truly grown to love the Motor Trend crew, by far my favorite car channel on RUclips. These videos are just so addicting, can't wait for the full 2015 MT BDC video.
+e-hybrid 919LMP1 For good reason though. If you own a Porsche or drive one a lot, anyone understands why there is so much blind loyalty. They never disappoint, consistent durability/quality build, and always bring that perfect balanced all-around performance.
+Kentavis Perry It has to do with balance, understeer/oversteer is a question of balance. But the aero package only affects high speed corners on road cars, it's not as effective as in race cars.
+ZeoStorm he died in a carrera gt, because thats what happens when you put someone whos not a pro driver in an extremely difficult and un forgiving super car and they drive like its a cayman with driving on in the rain...
GT4 is such a weapon! Far beyond many cars though Randy is 100% correct in saying tighten the rear. Keen to know if they had the rear sway set to hard as it is adjustable.
Why dont you guys adjust the suspension settings before setting the lap times to the drivers liking so that the experience can be correctly evaluated? This is a genuine question...
Wow. What a car! I'm surprised they left that understeer in there for the production model. I wonder if it might handle differently on a different track.
Righting this, before I see the review. Never thought I'd buy a Porsche that was not a 911... Then, along came the Panamera (still an ugly duckling) and now, the fabulous Cayman (ok, it's a cheaper/lighter 911). This car is so awesome in everyday usage that it's frightening. You do your chores, get stuck in traffic, buy some groceries, get stuck in traffic, find a good portion of free race track (also know as roads) and you are in paradise. Since Porsche solved the "floating front syndrome" it's been one masterpiece after another. The perfect car for the street racer. Now, on with the show. Hope you don't make me eat my words. Cheers.
+NorthWolfe Ok, so the "floating front" hasn't been completely solved and probably never will be. As for the gears, you can always remap them or have them remapped.
Hey, MotorTrend! I have a question. So, you said the Cayman would be quicker with shorter gearing, but why is that? Longer gearing means the engine revs higher, correct? As in the car has a higher red-line/rev limiter, so the gearing is a bit long, right? So why would the car be quicker with a shorter gearing ratio, since that would take away the higher reving nature of the engine? I was just curious about this is all :) Who knows, I'm not a mechanic or an engineer, so I probably asked a really dumb question, but again, I'm curious! Haha! Thanks so much for the awesome videos! Keep em' coming, please! I would love for you guys to release content more often, as they're such great, entertaining, well produced and informative videos! :D - Hunter Parleir/HuntingVapor(RUclipsReviewingChannel)
+Richard Basford you have to be kidding me. changing the gearing ratio in a porsche is anything but inexpensive...unless you've got that oil Sheikh money
eeterp32 I think you're being a bit ridiculous. Changing the final drive would be far less expensive than changing a gear set and is a fairly common mod for many race cars. I've found ring+pinion sets for a 911 online from $2g - $3,500. Remember I'm talking final drive, not actual ratios.
+Daniel Maia Would final drive gearing change all the gears? (1st-6th) Honest question, I guess I always figured final drive gearing would be only 6th gear but that may just be complete ignorance. Would changing the final drive gearing cause you to hit redline sooner in each and every gear?
tkobvious The final drive is like a multiplier for your gears. If you get a shorter final drive, for example from 4:1 to 5:1, every gear will be shortened. Redline would be hit at a lower speed in every gear. (hope this helped)
+Ten and Two Don't think the Z28 can be put in the same sentence as the Cayman GT4 when it comes to dynamics or driving, not even comparable to the most basic Cayman. Z28 is fast on a track because it has a lot of power, super wide and super grippy tires and a lot of downforce, but it's not a particularly good car to drive. It's still a heavy muscle car. GT4 is a race car with number plates. There's a very big difference between a car that just has a lot of grip and power, and a car that is naturally balanced, mid engined, very low center of gravity, very short wheelbase, etc.
Porsche Cayman GT4.....its gonna be a fun battle with this against the MX5, not in a race, but both seems really fun to drive. As for the understeer and tall gearing, thats Porsches way of not letting the Cayman get too far ahead from the 911.
This car will cost a fortune in about 5 years. It is a serious investment right now. Last Porsche with an NA Flat 6 One of the last Porsches with the manual Plus, it's a special verison. Definitely would buy if I had the money ;)
+Jason Lee I am from Europe, at least from hole in Europe, and I might prefer CTS over ATS just because of more room. Both outstanding cars and Im really happy Caddy shows teeth so much. For winners, lets just wait until others are run thru.
I wanna see Randy do a head to head comparison between that Cayman and a similarly equipped 911 and try to see which he thinks is dynamically superior!
The long gearing was designed withe 'Ring in mind. Much longer, faster track. Still, to put down the time it did in this shootout against cars with 200-300 more HP is literally unbelievable. $100,000 or less will not buy you a better car with more exclusivity and accessible performance.
Dream car... i would take this over ANYTHING!! ... Except for a Koenigsegg One:1 or a Ford Capri Zakspeed or a Porsche 935... but man this car is up there!
I'm not even going to watch the finals , they will make the presche win like always and I have to say out of these it is sooo damn worth it (not a porsche fan )
Ara J Surprisingly, I addressed that already in my original comment; "Porsche's wins often, but not always." ...There's always the chance of an upset, or surprise victor. Are you seriously going to boycott the final?
LOVE that car! Was Porsche just giving the purists time to adjust to the Cayman by waiting so long to finally give it some legs? The design has all the makings for a great race car and sports car combo. I think this one is going to catch on like fire. If I hit the jackpot, I would go and pick one up myself. Maybe someday.....
I was hoping they'd say that the gearing was also changed, in the beginning of the video. even with all of the upgrades, the gearing still holds it back (omg 911 sales!)
+TheCamaro5 I don't disagree the gearing was to keep the acceleration away from certain 911 models. However the 911 is not going away; it has been around for 51 years.
Track cars need low weight and not so much power and as Colin Chapman founder of Lotus said ''Add power and you will be fast in straight, but loose weight and you'll be fast everywhere''
The only things that bothers me is how they put a mic literally inside the rear exhaust pipe to make it sound like a fire breathing monster. Notice when he talks during the hot lap it sounds like he is driving in a taxi and then they crank back up the exhaust pipe audio once he stops talking.
I don't believe for a second that the long gearing was done to make the car a better road car. Everything is right except for gearing. Porsche are still holding the Cayman back.
Randy says he would like to change the sway bar setup to eliminate the understeer, so why aren't they doing that ???? Thats the reason Porsche made it adjustable !
I could watch these all day.
+SlipknotMaggot0526 Same here :)
+SlipknotMaggot0526 I KNOW RIGHT!
+SlipknotMaggot0526 Agreed Maggot! I wish they'd involve Randy in more stuff too, he's great to watch, and he's such a good driver.

+SlipknotMaggot0526 Agreed! Have been really enjoying this series. Wish they could do more of these. And Randy Pobst just really knows what he's talking about and has great insight.
Top speeds on the main straight:
1. Cadillac CTS-V - 133 mph (214 km/h)
2. Mercedes AMG C63 S - 132 mph (213 km/h)
3. Cadillac ATS-V - 128 mph (206 km/h)
4. Porsche Cayman GT4 - 127 mph (205 km/h)
5. Lexus RCF - 124 mph (200 km/h)
6. Golf R - 112 mph (180 km/h)
7. Mazda MX-5 - 103 mph (166 km/h)
Interesting post
AMG GT S was 137 mph
I can't help but suspect that Porsche geared the GT4 long to handicap it against the 911 range. Shorten the gears a decent amount and this car would be significantly quicker to 60, 1/4 mile, and lap times.
+Zygrene Yours is the only logical explanation of that long gearing I have heard to this point.
Porsche apparently have claimed that they geared it long so it's drivers wouldn't have to do a lot of upshifting when overtaking.

+Zygrene Yeah I'm waiting to see someone change to shorter gear ratios and make the car handle a bit more neutral and then compare it to the carrera s
+Zygrene agreed
Agreed. And imagine it with a PDK gearbox. It would just demolish the 911 in terms of performance.
Perfect car.
Perfect edition.
Perfection.
GT4 has fully adjustable suspension, so that under-steer is no issue and can be dialed-out. Great Drive
If it understeers, they should have reduced the setting on the front anti roll bar, increase the rear one, and take some of the rear wing down to reduce downforce in the rear. Everything on this car is adjustable, so you can make it drive exactly as you want.

And here we have the next winner of the 2015 Motor Trend's Best Driver's Car.
+d1gBR Nope. The Mercedes AMG GT S wins it.
+rvind92g We´ll see ! But in 2013 the 911 won... And the GT 4 it´s the "perfect porsche"... So im betting on it.
+d1gBR no you don't get it. I actually meant the AMG GT S has already won it. the CEO of Mercedes north america tweeted it
+rvind92g daaamn... spoiler aleeert :~(
+e-hybrid 919LMP1 For good reason though. If you own a Porsche or drive one a lot, anyone understands why there is so much blind loyalty. They never disappoint, consistent durability/quality build, and always bring that perfect balanced all-around performance.
Mid-corner Randy said that it understeers a bit more than expected! Why not set the rear spoiler to produce a tad less downforce and try again??
what does the rear spoiler have to do with the front tires?
+Kentavis Perry An imbalance of downforce will cause lift on the opposing tires.
+Kentavis Perry It has to do with balance, understeer/oversteer is a question of balance.
But the aero package only affects high speed corners on road cars, it's not as effective as in race cars.
Ok!
+Christos Segkounas So you say aero balance can be altered on road cars, but the effects are minute! True!
are the rebound and compression not fully adjustable like a gt3? couldn't they stiffen up the rear to get rid of that understeer?
So, what rollbar settings and wing settings were actually used in the test? Has it been mentioned somewhere?
RIP Paul Walker!
+ZeoStorm Made me laugh

that exhaust sounds so glorious.
Why dont you guys adjust the suspension settings before setting the lap times to the drivers liking so that the experience can be correctly evaluated? This is a genuine question...
Love that they only equipped it with a manual!!
except for the fact that it has way to tall gears, just a stupid thing porsche does to make it slower than stock 911s.
Damn this car is sick.
Wow, up to 80 in 2nd gear? crazy....
Wow. What a car! I'm surprised they left that understeer in there for the production model. I wonder if it might handle differently on a different track.
What's the thing he is moving his right hand on?
Please please please tell me the new ford mustang gt is in this
These are more informative than most car reviews
you should have put a 2016 Porsche gt3 rs in this lot.

The perfect car for the street racer.

can't wait to see what the Z06 Z07 does and the AMG
Is there any aftermarket solution for the long gearing on the Cayman GT4?
+Daniel Maia yes, as he mentioned, you could change the final drive. A relatively inexpensive fix, which I've read early owners are already doing.

No the GT4 should have the 500 hp 4.0L.
We'll just wait for the Gt4 RS 4.0 (we can hope right)
That’s what I’m saying
This is like Porsches Camaro Z28.
+Ten and Two Don't think the Z28 can be put in the same sentence as the Cayman GT4 when it comes to dynamics or driving, not even comparable to the most basic Cayman. +derbigpr500 I guess you missed the Head 2 Head episodes where they put a Z28 up against a Nissan GTR and a 911 GT3.
+derbigpr500 It won BDC last year so it must drive very well.
What a car. Magnificent.
can we just take a moment and listen to that sound....
Definitely my favorite 2016 Car
Sway bar last can be adjusted but why did Porsche leave the gearing so tall??
I see a winner already
amg gt s
Obviously the winner
Out of all the cars i hope this wins it!
amg gt s
Mini beast!!
What a wonderful car.
Porsche Cayman GT4.....its gonna be a fun battle with this against the MX5, not in a race, but both seems really fun to drive. As for the understeer and tall gearing, thats Porsches way of not letting the Cayman get too far ahead from the 911.
First my dream car was a cayman R. then it was the GTS. Now it's the GT4. Till the next Cayman variant comes out.
great review apart from tall gearing this is it GT4
Love this car. The new Cayman is tough.
This car will cost a fortune in about 5 years. It is a serious investment right now.
Last Porsche with an NA Flat 6
One of the last Porsches with the manual
Plus, it's a special verison.
Definitely would buy if I had the money ;)
Domestic driver's car - ATS-V manual
Foreign driver's car - GT4.
Done. This years driver's car show is over.
+Jason Lee I am from Europe, at least from hole in Europe, and I might prefer CTS over ATS just because of more room. Both outstanding cars and Im really happy Caddy shows teeth so much. For winners, lets just wait until others are run thru.
+Jason Lee I don't think the ATS-V will end up above the ZO6.
+Jason Lee No. The AMG GT S wins it.
Reptilius Maximus I know! Caddy is awesome nowdays. It's so weird how the automotive industry changed so much over the last 2-3 years.
unbelievable car.
I thought you could get it in a pdk? Maybe in Europe but not US I guess
+jack snell manual only
I wanna see Randy do a head to head comparison between that Cayman and a similarly equipped 911 and try to see which he thinks is dynamically superior!
The long gearing was designed withe 'Ring in mind. Much longer, faster track. Still, to put down the time it did in this shootout against cars with 200-300 more HP is literally unbelievable. $100,000 or less will not buy you a better car with more exclusivity and accessible performance.
GT4 Will be best drivers car for sure.
Motor Trend knows they love German cars the most. Built the best / look the best.
This is the car to own in my opinion. Shame it was a limited run. Probably will go str8 up in value...
There is room for 1 second improvement with swaybars
+Montenegro Montenegrin proof?
Very cool and impressive, though also impressive that for about the same money a mid size luxury sedan is nearly as fast on track.
I'm finally glad to see the Cayman getting 911 attention.
Would be interesting to see how much time Randy could shave of with all suspension and sway bar settings adjusted to his liking.
Dream car... i would take this over ANYTHING!!
... Except for a Koenigsegg One:1 or a Ford Capri Zakspeed or a Porsche 935... but man this car is up there!
3:07 Jonny sulking with envy
+Lolman240 Envy? I was just staying out of the sun!
I'm not even going to watch the finals , they will make the presche win like always and I have to say out of these it is sooo damn worth it (not a porsche fan )
+Ara J The Mercedes AMG GT S wins it.
+Ara J
Last year the Camaro Z/28 won. That placed it ahead of cars like the AlfaRomeo 4C and 911Turbo S.
Porsche's wins often, but not always.
Flabernat what about 3 years prior to last year ,,dude I have been watching this channel for years
Ara J Surprisingly, I addressed that already in my original comment; "Porsche's wins often, but not always."
...There's always the chance of an upset, or surprise victor. Are you seriously going to boycott the final?
Flabernat I'll watch it but will not going to watch the placing
Nice machine....
Randy knows exactly what he's talking about.
Shouldn`t the GT3 RS be in too? It wasn`t launched when they did last years COTY.....
This car better win.
Gorgeous car omg
LOVE that car! Was Porsche just giving the purists time to adjust to the Cayman by waiting so long to finally give it some legs? The design has all the makings for a great race car and sports car combo. I think this one is going to catch on like fire. If I hit the jackpot, I would go and pick one up myself. Maybe someday.....
there must be some adjustment in suspension that would make this car faster... It doesnt make sense to be fast as z28 on this track.
Just a second faster than the CTS-V so I know Cadillac is going to do better 💯 with their next series..
Seems hard not having this car as this year's winner.
the want is strong with this one!
would have loved to see you set the rear sway bar and have another go at a hot lap
look at Johnny standing in the background like some unnoticed groupie!...hahahaha!...ok I'm done.
I was hoping they'd say that the gearing was also changed, in the beginning of the video. even with all of the upgrades, the gearing still holds it back (omg 911 sales!)
+Dungzoo 911 is geared long too. Fuel mileage regs is my guess.
+Dungzoo Porsche is scared it would be too fast. And Hurt 911 sales. Which Porsche needs to go ahead and change all cars to this superior platform.
+TheCamaro5 I don't disagree the gearing was to keep the acceleration away from certain 911 models. However the 911 is not going away; it has been around for 51 years.
the 911 also has inexplicably tall gearing
Truly insane!
Why was the Porsche 911 GT3 RS not in this year's competition???
Track cars need low weight and not so much power and as Colin Chapman founder of Lotus said
''Add power and you will be fast in straight, but loose weight and you'll be fast everywhere''
The only things that bothers me is how they put a mic literally inside the rear exhaust pipe to make it sound like a fire breathing monster. Notice when he talks during the hot lap it sounds like he is driving in a taxi and then they crank back up the exhaust pipe audio once he stops talking.
here that Porsche. Get on Randy's recommendations.
I don't believe for a second that the long gearing was done to make the car a better road car. Everything is right except for gearing. Porsche are still holding the Cayman back.
+motortrend OK seriously no 2015 Viper TA 2 on this race course. Also you guys are sponsored right??
please ford mustang gt and gt350 hot lap
That downshift gets me in my soul.....
Randy says he would like to change the sway bar setup to eliminate the understeer,
so why aren't they doing that ???? Thats the reason Porsche made it adjustable !
3:05, What's up Johnny?
LOVE IT! BEST HOT LAP!
