This is a very good video and was very instrumental in me purchasing my GT4. Two notes for those interested: 1. The sport button is simply an auto blip button. It does not change any of the performance of the car besides the auto blip. The car is always in a sport mode. 2. The carbon seats I have found to be extremely comfortable and they are all the business. It was a six hour drive home from the Porsche dealership where I bought the car and I had no complaints. However that is personal preference. Others may find the seat a bit uncomfortable. As for the fun and sound factor - this video does it great justice. This car is the best car I have ever driven and it sounds absolutely glorious.
+AbbasSyed I didn't even knew who he is tll yesterday just looked because his comment is under every video I watch too :D True petrol heads I guess (shmee150, chris harris, motor trend, evo, jay lenos garage ftw)
1. Sport button doesnt change throttle response and 2. It definitely isn't quiet or liveable even with buttons turned off, it's always hardcore (which is a good thing)
This is a great car review. I wasn't screamed at. You didn't try to impress with stupid burnouts. No blaring music. No quick editing. You did not babble on. Thank you!
According to the head of gt department the sport button does nothing other than turn on and off rev match. They didn't have time/money to implement true changes with the sport button.
+TickleMeShlomo You put it nicely, I agree. I see Top Gear as a comedy show that happens to be about cars. Here comes Jeremy Clarkson screaming 'POOWEER' 'IT GOES AROUND A CORNER REALLY FAST' and other things I don't really car car journalism. I don't have a problem with the program, it's just not for me. What does irritate me is that TG spawned a generation of people that like cars, but I can't really talk about cars with them. They still don't know anything technical. That just saddens me.
+SoCalSupercars I completely gave up on /Drive, even though they used to be my favorite car channel besides evo. XCar, however, hits the perfect tone in my opinion: lots of background history, an AWESOME host, beautiful photography and none of the childish sideways stuff I don't care much about.
This is hands down the best video XCar has ever made, Alex felt like he meant every word he said and enjoyed every minute he got to spend with the car. I can´t say that of many other videos in this channel. Though they are all great.
I loved 911's, I still do, but honestly they've changed to the point that they just seem so bla. I think they are getting bigger and it's loosing the appeal that it once had with me. When the Cayman first came out I hated it. Now I really love it because it reminds me of what the 911 used to be.
It would struggle as you'd have to change to 3rd to get to 60, thus negating any benefits gained from the shorter ratios. With longer gearing it'll do the dash in 1st and 2nd. With a PDK, no doubt it would nudge under 4secs, however.
+Matthew Hall You do realise that it can currently reach 82 in second gear right? Therefore having shorter ratios doesnt necessarily mean you'll need to grab third to reach 60.
+Kurt Phillips Yeap, a shorter 2nd gear to say... 65mph max would be perfect so you would still be in 2nd gear reaching 60 but in the peak power curve.
+Leon Kalogeropoulos it sold out almost instantly, it doesn't matter if it poses a danger to the 911 or nor. They just used the gearbox they already had, probably for cost reasons.
GT4, one of my realistic dream cars! Stunning looks, Porsche quality, short throw manual gearbox, detuned Carrera S engine (385 hp). What can go wrong, and what more could you possibly need?
+wtfdididolastnight Even used ones with 100,000 miles on them start at £12 grand ( for a 2006 model ). And if by 'youngsters' , you mean teenagers....the insurance alone would destroy that dream. No... these things are destined for middle-aged farts with pot bellies and receeding hairlines.
+Martin Allen That will be solved soon. The 911 already changed to turbo charging, so the Boxster / Cayman will surely soon follow. However it will probably be 4-cylinder turbos, so the sound will not be as glorious as the naturally aspirated 6-cylinders, we get now. Walter Rohrl just bought a Boxster Spyder with the 3,8 liter engine. And I think, that was a clever decision. Because this "last hurra" for the naturally aspirated engines is extremely likely to become a collector item in the future.
+wtfdididolastnight Just about all good cars these days are stupidly over priced compared to wages. Take the new civic type r for example. When it came out in 2001 the EP3 was 16k brand new. The 2015 type r is 30k. I don't know about you but I'm still waiting for my wage to double what it was in 2001. It's shit working full time and not being able to afford what you want. It's hardly surprising so many people just say fuck it and live on benefits. You still can't buy what you want, but there's no getting your arse out of bed 5 days a week for the privelige.
Dan James The Cayman GT4 is the business. I was lucky enough to get first-hand experience of this beast. See what this owner thinks of his GT4 in this video. ruclips.net/video/Zqz5Kcz8dzY/видео.html
Drag racers around the continent are rolling their eyes thinking about how easy it is to spend a few bucks and rehear a transmission to get the exact ratios you want. Porsche has their reasons for doing it but it’s not that hard to cut some gears and slip them in the case.
It's getting better all the time. If you've raced, you know that the chassis configuration (mid engine) is better than rear engine for many reasons. I feel that it looks better than the current 911 series as well. Why is it not better geared? More powerful? Marketing deference to the 911, yes, but also because Porsche want to have room for future upgrades and further interest in the Cayman. They're in the business of maintaining sales year over year. The upgrades will come, as they always have. Well done, Porsche, and XCAR.
As much as I love the concept of the GT4, I'd say that Porsche would've done some things differently if they wanted it to truly be the best the Cayman can be. Most notably, stuffing the same 500HP flat six into it the 991 GT3 RS has. That and an optional PDK transmission. Porsche might have upped the level they allow the Cayman to be at, but they're certainly still holding it back to not interfere with the 911... Great video, by the way - as usual :D
+Tobias Bernhardt Porsche claims the 4 liter from the RS won't fit without significant costly redesign and I can see that being possible. However the gear ratios and 15 hp detune of the engine are ridiculous marketing gimmicks to keep 911s ahead of its younger brother. Hopefully someone will realize that there is room in this world for two distinct and equally fast types of Porsches one smaller with two seats and mid engine or one four seats and larger with rear engine. People that like the way a 911 drives don't care about 15 horsepower they care about the rawness and unique handling. Some people like balance. Porsche is making a mockery of themselves with these continued shenanigans.
Chris Powers First time I heard the engine was considered and just didn't fit. Don't know what to make of that, there are shops that offer swapping the 3.8 litre flat sixes into Caymans and Boxters, so I don't know what to make of that statement. Might be true, don't know how the engines compare in terms of size. But, yeah, as your said, the detuned engine and the gear ratios are a bit of a hint of Porsche's intentions...
I read that the reason the 3.8 in the gt4 is down in hp compared to the 911 was because they had to re design the intake manifold. It's possible the 4.0 wouldn't have fit However, I do believe that they are still holding the gt4 back.... It seems like it sure as hell needs shorter gears.
+Jason Ortiz you don't need shorter gears just change out the final drive gear in the differential. That would be a feasible upgrade for this car. I would gear it so it would hit 65 on the top of second gear that would make it a sub 4 second car to 60.
Great video Mr. G, I absolutely love your in depth review, pointing out the and the idiosyncrasies as well. Other then some dimensional tech really well done!!
Porsche are great sales men. they did not give it a pdk option because it would have been to quick. So they sell it as a driver's car with a manual, wait it's still too fast so longer gears it is. Bunch of fucking assholes, I prefer manual but there is no reason this car should not have a 0-60 under 4 seconds.
lonewolf5460 with the GT4 many are claiming that Porsche finally allowed their engineers to design a Cayman without compromises. But it's apparent from the GT4's unusually tall gears that that is still not the case.
+JoeBlo2 exactly I feel like they are hurting the brand more by doing this and taking people for fools vs just releasing the car with short gears for manual and a pdk option.
+JoeBlo2 How about it costs too much for what you get? I shopped a Cayman S. It had rubber weatherproofing hanging out the crack between the driver's door and the left front fender. It was $88.9. For that kind of money, I expect the little things to be ironed out. I'll stick with my Merc.
YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT...!!GT3 IS NOT AN ''EVERYDAY CAR'' ...TURBO S IS AND THE RACE TRACK LAP TIMES ARE IDENTICAL BECAUSE OF THE POWER AND AWD!!U MAKE GREAT VIDEOS!
I'm really enjoying this guy's reviews, the best out there by far. He comes across as likeable and sincere and of course passionate about driving engaging cars.
I think Matt Farah reviewed one of these by sharkwerks or something like that and they change the gearing around and apparently just completely changes the car in a good way
I now have this car a 2016 and love it. Unfortunately my car is tucked away for the winter as I live within a snowball here in Canada. I can't wait for spring to arrive to get her back on the road.
Great review, as always, and what a perfect driver's car ! When did XCAR will review the Ferrari 488 GTB ? I'm a little bit confused about it and I cannot wait to have your thoughts on it for that reason.
Applaud Porsche for putting a manual in this instead of the PDK, but it's a shame the gearing is so long. This thing could be a real rocket with shorter gearing, and for something so track focused, its surprising Porsche put such lengthy gearing in it. I have a feeling it might have something to do with encroaching on the 911's territory, but either way, it's kind of a shame. Regardless, still a brilliant car.
Great review mate. What a car! I drove an older Cayman S for the first time recently, and have considered selling my restored 1966 912 to buy one. All this talk of having the best top speed is just a pissing contest at the local cafe' in my opinion. It's not how fast you can go in a straight line, but how well you can use the horsepower between the corners as demonstrated in this video. This seems to be nearly the perfect hills blaster. I also prefer the styling of the GT4 to a 911, but thats my personal taste.
Good video. Good host. Excellent cinematography and great scenery. One noticeable ommision...Alex didn't really expand on the unnecessarily tall gearing that most other reviews gripe about. For a driver's car to have taller gearing than a Corolla is inexcusable.
Even though he drives on the wrong side of the road and the wrong side of the car (from a US perspective) and gives weights in the Metric system, this reviewer does a damn fine job.
it should be said " hardcorest caymen money can buy, from Porsche" there are some real monsters out there that Porsche probably wouldn't be too thrilled about
In my opinion yes it is. To me the GT4 is the perfect sports car and the new one with 414 hp is pure perfection. Hopefully I can get one in 20 years haha.
Just to let you know pushing the "sport" button does not tighten up the steering and everything else like you said. All the sport button does is turn on the auto rev matching feature and that's it. A heads up.
great review! VW has been on a roll for about 5 years now. I am just afraid that their stupid TDI problem will bring this awesome toll that have been on to an abrupt end. Quality will suffer, r&d budgets are gonna get slashed. I can certainly see it coming and unfortunate as it going to be...
I applaud Porsche for finally making a car that doesn't sound exactly like every other 6-cylinder car they've made in the last 15 years. (Save for the 911 Turbo which sounds like every other 6-cylinder car they've made in the last 15 years with a vacuum cleaner attached to it.)
no flappy paddles, very nice. have to say i think this would be the porsche i'd buy, even if i had the funds for the gt3. little chip tune so the sport button can stay off and not blip for me, muffler bypass and a shorter final drive and it'd be perfect.
naturally aspirated mid engine + rwd + manual = all the car you will ever need...well done Porsche
This is a very good video and was very instrumental in me purchasing my GT4. Two notes for those interested:
1. The sport button is simply an auto blip button. It does not change any of the performance of the car besides the auto blip. The car is always in a sport mode.

You guys are like Top Gear, a good review, but with a bit of passion. Keep up the great work!
nah, top gear had humour, this has none
+ichiban ter top gear was the jersey shore version of motoring shows, though it did have its merits
Top shore

XCar has honestly been putting out some of the absolute best content on RUclips this year. Even much better than many bigger Channels like /Drive.

you mean /Ads
+Tom de Weerdt This. Stopped watching /Drive for that crap.
Absolutely agree with this. XCar's videos are great!

GT4, one of my realistic dream cars! Stunning looks, Porsche quality, short throw manual gearbox, detuned Carrera S engine (385 hp). What can go wrong, and what more could you possibly need?
This guy totally reminds me of Richard Hammond by way of his voice, tone and inflections. Very much a top gear feel to him. And THAT'S a good thing!
But his accent is different from Hammond's.
as a gt4 owner for the last 14 months I have to say your review and comments are bang on the money. well done!
That’s an awesome piece of engineering & art. Beautiful, a true drivers car.
These things will never be affordable for youngsters.
Even used ones in 10 year won't go down in price, only way is up.
+Martin Allen I'm 22 and selling cars, one day i'll be that fat Director bloke in his secondhand GT4, but with a shorter gear ratio that is =D

+celt67 The average Porsche buyer is 56 years old (in Germany)... so it's 40 years more wanking for most RUclipsrs, statistically speaking ;)
+wtfdididolastnight Just about all good cars these days are stupidly over priced compared to wages. Take the new civic type r for example. When it came out in 2001 the EP3 was 16k brand new. never been a huge fan of the 911, but these caymans have got me interested
Dan James The Cayman GT4 is the business. I was lucky enough to get first-hand experience of this beast. See what this owner thinks of his GT4 in this video.
ruclips.net/video/Zqz5Kcz8dzY/видео.html
Everytime i watch your videos, at the end i'm always subconsciously expecting an applause... like in top gear..
The super long gear ratio was just Porsche's clever way of holding the car back and protecting the 911
Makes you hate the brand a bit lol so cleaely they can make a better product but they wont because they wont make as much money off it....hmm.. lol
Drag racers around the continent are rolling their eyes thinking about how easy it is to spend a few bucks and rehear a transmission to get the exact ratios you want. Porsche has their reasons for doing it but it’s not that hard to cut some gears and slip them in the case.
The 911 has the same 2nd gear ratio. Same as the GT3 too.
Agreed, that would be my perfect car!
best car Porsche makes. connected drivers car, not over done. my favorite new car since the 4c
that review was amazing! I get mine Saturday :) can't wait

Well done, I like the GT4
Simply an amazing Porsche...my personal favorite now....
most under rated car show on RUclips by far.. keep up the good work!
+1...Oh yeah... The Carfection presenters know their business... Great work to presenters and crew...
Great review. I heard the sport button is only to turn on the rev match. No changes to steering or throttle response.
that transmission kills it! Why did Porsche do that? They fucked up, as much as I hate to say it ... shorter gears = more fun
This channel just keeps getting better and better. Keep it up boysss
If it had the rear end of the '16 Turbo S & headlights ,This would be one of the best looking cars all time :)
Great video Mr. G, I absolutely love your in depth review, pointing out the and the idiosyncrasies as well. Other then some dimensional tech really well done!!
Best reviewers on youtube. Test drove and bought my car after watching some of the stuff here.
+Carfection my options were seat cupra 280 and megane rs 265... Test drove both and went with the megane rs
I love this guy! Along with chris harris..
great review my friend Ave to be one of my favourite reviewers any chance of you getting on top gear would defo start to watch it again
I work with exotics and I've driven the GT4. He was spot on about everything he said; explained it perfectly!! What a car.
Universal complaint with the GT4 is its long gears. But its pretty much the only complaint.

Yoo Jastle Cayman GT4 is the exact price as the cheapest 911.
The cayman is for the man who can't afford a 911. The cayman gt4 is for the man who wants more than a 911.
YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT...!!GT3 IS NOT AN ''EVERYDAY CAR'' ...TURBO S IS AND THE RACE TRACK LAP TIMES ARE IDENTICAL BECAUSE OF THE POWER AND AWD!!U MAKE GREAT VIDEOS!
Great car, great video...I just can't understand why they made it a limited edition. 500 cars is not enough.
+kraenk12 I agree with your objection, however 500 is not an accurate number. More than that came (are coming) to North America alone.
They made 2500
Fantastic review, well done!
As I always say- great job to Alex and XCar on this one
Great insert, keep up the stellar job
I'm really enjoying this guy's reviews, the best out there by far. He comes across as likeable and sincere and of course passionate about driving engaging cars.
Thanks Alex and XCar crew
1:36 You might want to state that the parts included on the GT4 are from a 991 GT3. The one shown here is a 997 GT3.
Very nice review. Well done.
love your great review. your right up there with chris harris.😊😊👍👍👍
This guys is one of the best.. If not.. THE BEST!.. Crackin' review mate.. haha..
I have two words for this, GREAT REVIEW!!!!!
I love these videos
Stellar work
"Not the fastest car" is not an apology - it is a full on sports car 8:50.
Another amazing piece of engineering from Porsche!
Great review, as always, and what a perfect driver's car ! When did XCAR will review the Ferrari 488 GTB ? I'm a little bit confused about it and I cannot wait to have your thoughts on it for that reason.

Very good review and I really like the road. Is this southern England?
Good video. Good host. Excellent cinematography and great scenery. One noticeable ommision...Alex didn't really expand on the unnecessarily tall gearing that most other reviews gripe about. For a driver's car to have taller gearing than a Corolla is inexcusable.
Great video! Where in Wales you are driving that?
love your reviews, easy to understand all what you are saying cause english is not my language
Love this car. Thanks XCar!
Looks better than a 911, so it is better than a 911
That was the best gt4 video I have seen
Great vid keep up the good work
Even though he drives on the wrong side of the road and the wrong side of the car (from a US perspective) and gives weights in the Metric system, this reviewer does a damn fine job.
great job on the review
my gt4 is the best car, in terms of involving and fun, that i ever driven.... fantastic review mate!
Indeed it's a rewarding machine, I just bought an E46 m3 manual to pair it with my GT4.
Finally, somebody mentioned the shorter stick. I've never driven one but I always thought it looked slightly shorter.
Great review
Good review. Beautiful car.
i love when they talk about the cars like they have soul and spirit... not many car reviewers do this
Best video on this channel
it should be said " hardcorest caymen money can buy, from Porsche"
there are some real monsters out there that Porsche probably wouldn't be too thrilled about
One word: Awesome!
Great Video!!! Shame I can't buy one anymore!!
A heads up.
I'm liking this channel as much as motor trend now.
the first three gear are too long. they nees to lower final drive ratio.

great review!
Well presented....
Very good review man I'm saying this seriously.
This guy is a quality reviewer
I love the GT4. Such a great all-rounder
no flappy paddles, very nice. have to say i think this would be the porsche i'd buy, even if i had the funds for the gt3.
little chip tune so the sport button can stay off and not blip for me, muffler bypass and a shorter final drive and it'd be perfect.
there will be a PDK version in Club Sport spec coming soon ^^
+Iris C Not street legal.
+Squirrelz Correct.
+Squirrelz PDK will also be introduced in the GT4 street version at the same time the Club Sport makes its debut at the L.A. Auto Show.
