Yeah he was using lots of upper body to steer, you can't just hold those things loose going this fast. I think he even said they didn't have full power steering.

It basically has it in the new 718. Same bore and stroke, 4L... I know Porsche marketing says it’s not the same as the GT3’s, but it’s more similar than different. They don’t want us to think it’s similar, or GT3 sales would suffer.

To bring out the potential of the Gt4, the comparison should be done on a tighter track, with more change of directions... Not just long straightaways like Silversone.
A Turbo S would probably be even faster than the Gt3 RS here...

The best comparison would be a 997.2 GT3 vs GT4. They're similar in price point and both come in a manual. Comparing a PDK vs Manual is a complete fail.

Both are fantastic but I prefer the GT3 RS, it's a masterpiece. I heard that they will do a GT2 (and eventually a GT2 RS) with the 991.2. Can't wait to see it. Hope that they will use a rivet body kit. It will be a nice tribute to the 993 GT2 :)

+dhns555 The GT3 is the badass version of the Carrera. It is made for both the street and the racetrack. Those cars have naturally aspirated engines. Moreover, they are rear-wheel drive. The GT2 is the badass version of the four-wheel drive Turbo with a bigger engine which is also made for the street and for the racetrack. The GT2 and the GT2 RS are obvioulsy more powerful than the GT3 and the GT3 RS. The GT2 is rear-wheel drive like the Carrera and the GT3. Now, with the new 991.2, even the Carrera cars are turbocharged but fortunately for the purists, the GT3 and the GT3 RS will always have a naturally aspirated engine.

3.2 seconds is quite a big difference. I think it would have been better to compare them on a track with much more turns and much shorter straights. makes it a lot fair for the GT4

Wow! Just for reference, the 3 hypercars are all in the 58 seconds range on that track, that's wicked fast.

If the car had slightly shorter gears it would be faster!!! It has to pull so much gear which makes the engine work harder. That's why sharkworks puts a shorter final drive in the car.

Checked out a 2020 GT4 at the local dealer, trade in (owner is upgrading to a 2022 GT3). less than 2K Miles. We went for a spin. Fantastic car. Sadly, ordered without the PCCB and they are asking 5k USD more than the MSRP. Markets are nuts right now. Rumor now (5 years after this was posted) is the GT4 RS which also makes me want to wait just yet... but, no matter what people are hoping, it'll be PDK only and slower/less powerful than the GT3. Count on those two things, sadly.

Nevermind the cars, I can't believe Steve's laptimes! He'd have put the GT3RS on pole in the CSCC Mag 7's race. Last year's pole at the Silverstone National was 1.00.8. The RS was 8 tenths quicker than a 300+bhp race Caterham?! Is that even possible?!
Sorry but 3 sec difference only with 120 bhp down and no pdk makes me want the gt4 even more. I live in the mountains and for the roads i drive the gt4 would be the perfect tool. The gt3 rs is just a track monster !

That’s a short track, 3 seconds is a lot, gap would be greater on a 3 mile track
If you do the aftermarket trick and lower the gear of the GT4 it is unbeatable as the best car to drive

The Mezger is a true race engine; designed by a genius. Only reason they dropped it was the high cost per unit and emissions. The DFI is a good engine too but its not a mezger, which is a legendary engine.
The Mezger's legend was cemented when a standard road GT3 was driven to the 24 hours of Nurburgring; raced for 24 hours and then driven back to the factory immediately after the race with minimal repairs. Oh and it came 4th in class and 13th overall IIRC. In a field of race cars! I don't think they trust the DFI to do that.

If the Cayman GT4 had PDK + a tuned 3.8 (instead of detuned 3.8) + Aero, the results would have been embarrassing for 911 fans.
A better comparison is a manual 991.2 GT3

Actual difference 3.02 seconds but no comment in the video on what makes the GT3 feel so much quicker when the actual difference is what was predicted.

Probably the most amazing thing about the GT3 RS is that after pounding on it at the track all day long it actually went up in value.
So how much faster would GT4 be with carbon brakes, an aero package as good as the one on GT3 RS and an equally good PDK with proper gearing (and not the tall gearing to make it slow) ?

Because the cayman platform is more capable than the 911 when tuned. The gt3rs isnt really a fair comparison either, a gt3 is a fair comparison.

I would have guessed the difference in lap times should have been bigger...you Auto Express people think on a tight track the difference would be minimal...? it can be interesting to see the same test with a regular 991 GT3...

This comparison was like comparing a BMX bike to a 10 speed bike......I wonder if you had a fit driver that weighed less, how much faster the times would be?
Can you imagine Porsche GT3 RS is roughly only 1 sec slower then LaFerrari around here and the lap time was done in December for god sake those other 3 summer time much warmer condition another time for >POrsche it could probably match La Ferrari and maclaren -spyder WOW thats insane impressive..
bit pointless IMO. The GT4 is a road car, the GT3 is a race track car. Hence why - standard - it comes with a racing harness (instead of seat belts), a roll cage (instead of rear speakers) and the only optional extra is a fire extinguisher! Im pretty sure my girlfriend would prefer the GT4 to the GT3 for comfort alone

+TSI Sector It has been proven by experts (people who design ECUs) that chip tune in a NA car is absolutely useless. It's just a scam. I also think that exhaust and intake are already quite good and free flowing in GT4 so I those gains in power will have to be found from somewhere else.

the performance of the cars have been designed to the price point. in other words, the cayman can be easily faster than the gt3 if Porsche wanted to make it as fast as it can be.

Love your show but please start wearing an open face helmet. If it's for your microphone, just get something like an old school Pelter rally helmet with adjustable thin microphone. It just does not work looking at you and not seeing you talk and the voice sound is not good. Keep up the good footage and tests.
You should compare a GT4 to an older generation GT3 imo…. Second hand they come close to each other price wise.

Video quality didn't live up to the cars.
Too bad the producers didn't mic the exhaust for the laps and fade that in instead of going with the helmet mic for the entire thing. Also the shots were cuts from several different laps. So don't be fooled, they started with an amount of time and then filled it with footage and just plopped the helmet audio on top. If you are setting hot laps then I would avoid using chase car shots and drone shots. All of the multi-cam should be done from the car or else it has a movie chase scene feel. Just my opinion.
For real world driving thrills on public roads without gong to jail, the GT4 seem like the perfect car. The GT3 RS is the ultimate track car though.

Put the same engine gearbox and brakes in the Cayman and it would be the faster car the way it is designed makes it the quicker car. Unfortunately Porsche won't do that because the 911 is it's best selling product.

I'd take the GT4 over the GT3 RS , half the price and only 3 seconds slower when sorry but I can live with that ,you counter in the wide open track long gearing it's not as much as it would seem and would be closer on another track and on the road it would be a more comfortable daily
gt3 rs is a great car. I still would take a 675lt however. Just like Chris Harris said, a gt3 rs wouldn't even know were a 675lt has gone.

The reality is that even the comfort model 991.1 C2S is faster than the GT4 without the 991.1 using track tires. Yes, the gt4 is an awesome car for the money but why compare it to a gt3 rs? Track times are much closer to a 997.2 C2S (with same tires and GT3 align settings). Like I said, I love the gt4 but sometimes I think the hype blurs reality.

THe GT4 still wins here. For a car that costs 80-100k in the U.S. It's only 3 seconds behind a car that is being sold used at 175-208k. Still want a GT3RS still. GT4 is my non fantasy car though.
