Aja is one of the greatest albums ever made in ANY genre.
I agree with that!
Agree! The best pop/jazz album ever! For that matter, maybe the best popular music album of all time. Musicianship was extraordinary. Best of the best studio musicians were selected by Fagen and Becker.
Absolutely
rumors, back in black, the wall, aja, hotel california and thriller!
I agree!😘
In this context, The Black Cow is a sweet cocktail essentially like an Ice Cream Sundae with booze in it. Always love your reactions.
so she was high on booze...hopefully
It's a Coke Float.
Black cow doesn’t have booze in it, it’s either a Coca Cola Float or Root Beer Float. (Ice cream float, I mean)
@@anikkigreenlee yes you are right. I did order a black cow cocktail at a bar and was served something like a sundae with Kahlua in it.
There’s an alcohol version and a soda fountain version. The soda fountain version is a root beer float but blended/mixed up kind of like a shake.
The entire album Aja is incredible, it’s a very jazzy yet funky album.
One Hundred Percent.
One f their best
Agree! Must do AJA Album...also like Babylon Sisters from Gaucho Album!
I think their best !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of my all time favorite bands, been jamming them since the 80s
SO many Steely Dan hits to check out here: Kid Charlemagne, Peg, Deacon Blues, Reelin' In The Years, Hey Nineteen, Rikki Don't Lose That Number...keep 'em coming, Steely Dan is amazing :)
Pleeeeeease do "Hey Nineteen"!!!
Steely Dan is Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. For each song of every album, they use the best session musicians in the business. And the production and engineering are perfect.
Facts!!
Black cow is chocolae milk with or without booze or in some places The black cow, a classic ice float, is pure nostalgia for the true ice cream parlor lover. Root beer makes a black cow while cola makes a brown cow
No milk in a Black Cow; no chocolate either. Just Coke (or root beer) and vanilla ice cream.
@@danl.909 there was milk chocoalte version of a black cow
Wrong.
Arguably the best "first 4 songs" on any album...ever.
"AJA" definitely a top 10 GOAT! A Black Cow, as far as I know its Chocolate Ice Cream and Root Beer....or if you want, Kahlua.
2 Tbsp. chocolate syrup.
1 c. coca-cola.
1 Tbsp. cream.
1 scoop. chocolate ice cream.
@@Guitarisforgrins Well, there ya go. This just sounds so much better.
@@Guitarisforgrins Uh you forgot the alcohol!
@@USGrant-rr2by The recipe I found didn't include any. But we both know that is a terrible oversite!
Throw Home At Last on there and you can say the best first 5 songs on any album ever.
Hehe. A "Big Black Cow", as I understand it, is what New Yorkers call a rootbeer float. Great reaction. Steely Dan has so many great songs. But, Asia, you guys should check out Steely Dan's song, "Aja" (pronounced "Asia"). The drummer goes nuts. And, as always, Steely Dan produces the tightest songs you'll ever hear.
one of my all time favorite bands, they blended many various genres of music, rock, jazz, blues, funk, and they always had the best studio musicians come in for the recording sessions.
TW...no its a delicious cocktail.
Root beer condensed milk bourbon
@@hooper4581 that's the one.
A Root Beer Float made with Coca Cola instead of Root Beer. There is a version with alcohol !
Now we're gettin' somewhere on this here channel! Lol. This cut from '77 still bangs and ain't been nothing else like it. Whole album, Aja, is absolute fire.
Chuck Rainey’s monster bass line is what makes this song, for me. 👍
You are right, not only Peter Gunn but also another rapper used it, too. I thought it was sweet when Walter Becke (one of the founders and co-writers with Donald Fagen) died in 2018, the outpouring of respect and love that rappers poured out for him. They not only loved their music for sampling, but a lot of them became fans of their music, too.
Walter Becker.
@@bmw128racer when i type, sometimes I don't realize I left off a letter. Ofc, I know it is Becker, I not only bought every album as soon as they came out, but I also saw them in concert 4 times, one time with Michael McDonald which was awesome.
MF Doom was another rapper who sampled this on his track, “Gas Drawls”
Asia & BJ, you'll love their "Deacon Blues", "Aja" and "Josie"!!!!!
josie...man that drum beat is just sick AF :)
@@bugvswindshield Yeah, not nearlly enough people seem to check out Josie.
Josie is so cool.
@@Incomudro1963 yep, I've noticed that. Don't see it requested much either. And it's such a great song.
CHOCOLATE ice cream rootbeer and KALUHA
Add Pretzel Logic and Any Major Dude.
This song and group were a big part in my youth. Myself and friends running around Los Angeles thinking we were the bomb lol love this song and all the memories that come along with it. Hope all is well guys. As always stay safe and I love you.
Joe...sounds like yr old like me...whats with that kid pic? Lol...
@@michaelasay8587 lol yeah I'm old buddy. 62 had this pic originally to contact old school friends just lazy have never changed it. I should put up a new one. Hope all good.
Same here. A BIG part of my youth!!!😄
Can't go wrong with Steely Dan. Another jazz group that you might like is Weather Report. Their song "Birdland' is classic (I doubt that you would want to do a reaction because it won't draw a crowd). Another artist you might like is Boz Scaggs, "Lowdown". Great reaction.
I'd absolutely recommend Birdland as a full reaction - That's probably their most well-known hit, and it's AMAZING.
Also would get them hearing Jaco Pastorius, probably for the first time. Which could lead into Jaco's self-titled debut album, which was INSANELY good.
Phil Collins and Genesis live concert drummer was Chester Thompson. He was with Weather Report when Phil set his sights on him. Phil saw Weather Report in concert with Chester drumming. Phil was so impressed, he called Chester the next day and gave him the gig with no audition. He also drummed for Frank Zappa
“Black Market” is a Weather Report classic that is both accessible and sophisticated. Highly recommended!
The reason this song and the Aja album are so jazzy is because Steely Dan brought in pro session musicians and jazz players like Larry Carlton, Wayne Shorter (of Weather Report), Bernard Purdie, Steve Gadd, Chuck Rainey amongst others to play their songs. A classic session album!
Chippers I love you bro but Wayne Shorter (of Weather Report)? Wayne Shorter of WAYNE SHORTER.
@@johnandmarie7250 Yup ,that very same Wayne Shorter. The same guy who played with Miles in his younger days before Weather Report. He does the sax solo on the title track "Aja". Look it up. Check the album credits.... Fagen and Becker were musical geniuses and true musicians' musicians. Many pro players wanted to play on their albums.
My dad made me listen to a ton of Jazz. Lots of Larry Carlton constantly as a kid. God bless him ❤
Not to mention Victor Feldman. Beautiful solo on Black Cow.
All the hired guns. Different lineup for each song. Beautiful.
Steely Dan needs to be listened to at an appropriately high level of volume, on a high quality stereo system, with 4 speakers, and you in the center. Every instrument is precisely placed
in the mix, and when you get to experience it in that setting, it really is on a whole other level of greatness. Their studio mix precision is legendary. Which is obvious even at modest volumes.
When I listen to Steely Dan, so do the neighbors.
@@michaelpozzini6426 And Lucky Neighbors they are!
Much agreed
A big black cow was ice cream mixed with Cola. Like a root beer float, but it was a diner thing that has multiple versions depending on where you got it.
Actually, when I was growing up and this song came out, a Black Cow was an ''ice cream soda'' made with Cola and chocolate ice cream. Add dark rum if you prefer.
@@pb68slab18 Sounds right. I just remember Donald and Walter saying it was something they got at soda shops growing up. Even they weren’t totally sure.
More please! Steely Dan is in the RRHOF. They are in their own genre. Every album should be owned and cherished until you pass the entire catalog to your kids, and grandkids.
Agree totally !!
Wife here..Hey Asia.,.I noticed it as a Hip Hop song in the very beginning as well..That Sax is lit!!..Smooth..Funky..Jazz R&B..a little bit of Everything..Makes Steely Dan Sooooo Awesome!!..Perfectly Stated!!!
One of my favorite songs from them. I love to sing the whole song. This is the band that a lot of Rap artists sample. Kanye did copy "Kid Charlemagne" love them. ❤
Steely Dan, is so overlooked and underrated. An American original. One of the best.
I've never really thought them as overlooked or underrated 🤔
I could think of a few that are, Travis, Be Bop Deluxe and Barclay James Harvest, you might be thinking now, who the hell are those!
One of the most respected bands in history is not underrated. Anyone who has a knowledge and love of music knows all about them. Just because a bunch of foot-tappers who listen to Macmusic don't get it doesn't mean they're underrated. I hear people saying "underrated" about every band that they like because nobody's playing them day in day out in the media, who know nothing by the way. Look at any song on RUclips and the comments say underrated including the Beatles and Elvis lol.
I always thought of a Black Cow as a hangover drink, especially in the context of this song. She's been out all night "running around" and carousing, staggering home in the wee hours. The Black Cow has lots of sugar, ice cream, chocolate, root beer and probably booze. The amazing aspect of Steely Dan is that their music is timeless, always satisfying, and never grows old or stale. 50 years since their first album, they're still selling out venues, and remain the most smokin' hot live band in the business.
That sounds like the best and most logical explanation of the Black Cow drink especially in the context of this song.
Actually, it's very innocent. Fagen wrote this in the setting of a 50's ice cream, or soda shoppe. The relationship described is, of course, not innocent.
Aja is an incredible album! Not a bad song on it!!
70/70 🙂 10 for each track
Not a bad song on any Steely Dan album!
PEG! PEGPEG!PEEEEEEG! Groove fest soon good please 😁😁😁💙💙💙💙
The beautiful piano (Fender Rhodes) in "Black Cow" was played by Victor Feldman. He recorded with many jazz greats, including Benny Goodman, George Shearing, Cannonball Adderley, and Miles Davis, most notably on Davis' 1963 album Seven Steps to Heaven, the title tune composed by Feldman and Davis. Miles Davis invited Feldman to join his group full-time, but Feldman declined, preferring session work to the career of a touring musician, such as working in the studio with Steely Dan, Frank Zappa, and others.
You have to do “Aja” ... it’s your name plus a great song with the famous saxophone drums solo ...
Outrageously good! You kids call it sampling though back in my day we called it ripping someone off! One of the best albums of any era. Smooth jazzy, blues with a rock edge!
Very cool jazz rock fusion. Technically perfect with outstanding lyrics. Steely Dan's music will never get old.
Research where they got the band name, you'll get a big kick.
Yup. SD was responsible that opened my ears and mind into Smooth Jazz.
When Steely Dan played this in concert I remember how the Bass FELT, all the way from my chest to my toes.
Steely Dan is known for fusion of different genres - jazz and blues for sure.
This song was released in 1977 and 45 years. and 45 years later its still making money for Steely Dan.
Listen to the title track "Aja", the sax and drums will blow you away, and the lyrics and changeups too.
The Black Cow: Kahlua, Coca-Cola and Cream ....... Popular with coke heads back in the 80's .........
Your just at the tip of the iceberg. Many more to check out. Musicianship and production are always top notch with Steely Dan. Check "Babylon Sisters", "Time Out of Mind", "Peg", "Kid Charlemagne", "King of the World", "Everything Must Go"......just naming a select few!
From a quick interenet search:
Combine 1/2 cup of evaporated milk with 2 cups of root beer (your choice on the brand but we used A&W Root Beer for this particular one) and 2 ounces of your favorite bourbon. Mix then split between two tall cocktail glasses. Add ice to fill the glass. Drizzle chocolate sauce on the top.
Personally, I think I'd use cream or at least 1/2&1/2.
The opening riff was most famously sampled by Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz. Steely Dan is a musical genre unto themselves. Asia, this song is from the Aja album which is pronounced Asia. This is track one. Just keep going with the entire album. Seven great songs that have stood the test of time. All classics, with Aja, perhaps the best. 👍🔥❤️
Bad ass arrangement and tune....Steely Dan are the best...Check some Midnight Cruiser...and many others....great , deep catalog
Black Cow (adult version)
2 oz of Kahlua coffee liqueur
2 oz of half-and-half (or cream)
3 oz of Coca-Cola (or coke)
when I was a kid there was a chocolate milk brand called “black cow” also I think there’s an alcoholic version of “black cow” ...
Asia/B,J...You're right--Black Cow's been sampled more than by 1 rapper...And Damned if I can find a bartender that can mix a good one anywhere in my town!! (Black Cow was a candy bar, I Think they still make 'em today)
I'm 71 years old, grew up listen to Steely Day. They were a mixture of jazz and rock. The music of the 70s was the best.
you need to react to their song “Show Biz Kids”. Very different lyrics and music, they were a very versatile group you could count on them to do a little bit of everything and even something different
Believe this song was about the porn industry....
I’ve been a Steely Dan fan for many many years, and I’m a 58yr old black American.
So many years.... A 76 year old white guy. And always reminds me of a guy I worked with who became a close friend and who has passed away. Started working with him in 1979, the year this album came out.
This is my favorite Steely Dan song. The drink is an adult root beer float. Very 70s. My dad's chainsmoking aunt used to drink these. A lot. It reminds me of her. Visiting on Sundays in the 70s. In her polyester outfits, cig in one hand. Drink in the other. Telling the most obscene jokes.
Hard to pick a favorite from the glorious Steely Dan catalogue, but this would definitely be top ten.
I totally agree. I can't resist naming a few of mine 😏
My Old School
Pretzel Logic
Caves of Altamira
Through with Buzz
I Got the News
Doctor Wu
Change of the Guard
Plenty more of course, but they are just some of my favourites.
A fusion of jazz and r&b from one of the greatest bands ever
There’s a video called “Steely Dan’s UNLIKELY Connection with Hip Hop” that shows all (I guess) the rap songs that have sampled The Dan.
You should definitely hear Haitian divorce by Steely Dan
I think when BJ talks about a "Charlie Brown Keyboard" he's talking about the sound of a Rhodes Electric Piano! You should listen to more Steely Dan, they are all over the place. I personally suggest "Night By Night" or "Babylon Sisters", or "Kid Charlemagne", "Green Earrings". all absolute classics. Can't go wrong with Steely Dan
Black Cow is such a perfect “mood piece” of a song…it’s a song that lets you sit back with the music while it takes you on a story.
Their song Hatian Divorce is a fun one that I think you guys would enjoy, I don't see a lot of people talk about it but it's one of my favorites of their's. Oh and I just wanted to let ya'll know you're killing it with these videos, it's such a joy watching you experience all this great music!
Don't take me Alive! Guitar solo at the start......
Always thought a Black Cow was a cocktail (rum/ burbourn/ different recipes) but in an old Steely Dan interview I heard recently they said it was a children's drink with cola and milk that was popular in the 60's, and that's what it is referring to. 😛
This album and SD is one of the great highlights in my music listening and it’s so cool to see you guys hit it for the first time! I can’t imagine…
They create a complete world. It's a time and a place and you're there every time. Sometimes I'll listen to just the drums. So many drummers. 😎👍
So smooth, so perfect, so digable. And it is very jazz influenced but its all Steely Dan. Loved it!!
My favourite band among many favourites, and I’m a Brit where we have tons of choice.
This rabbit hole is deep and rich with quality.
They use the Hammond B2 and the Rhodes organs. Classic.
My favorite from this album and enjoyed it with you🔥
Huge Steely Dan fan!!!🤘🏾
Funky bluesy rocky and a touch of reggae from time to time...
"Glamour Profession" is perhaps the dopest of them all!! It's tha 1 🏌🏾♂️⛳️
I wish I was hip enough to exist as a character in a Steely Dan song
Heh. Careful with that, you might end up a middle-aged man screwing around with girls too young for you and questioning all your life choices. LOL
@@joeday4293 Haha!
yeah Black Cow is a drink, prob upscale bars.
not where i was bartender;
in 6 years of mixing drinks i had 1 customer order a cream drink!
love this album, put it on and relax...
would also make good background music.
3:10, the beginning was sampled in Uptown Baby
Keep Steely rollin.. So cerebral and eclectic and smooth.. Top five favorite 👌🏻
"Uptown baby!" Lol
Really like your reactions! I bought Aja on vinyl in 1978 when I was 19. Behind Aja, which is my favorite song ever, this one is number two. Please keep on with SD!
The rap song Uptown baby song sampled Black Cow.
A Black Cow is a chocolate milkshake. In this context, it is probably spiked with Rum.
Just gotta say, there were groups/artists that were for me, the foundation of being affected and infected with a diversity of genres and absolute musical virtuosity at the highest level. Steely Dan hooked me from “Can’t buy a Thrill”, to “Gaucho”, just as S. Wonder, Pink Floyd , Allman Bros Band, Led Zep, Beatles, Santana, etc.
Just go down a rabbit hole with this group Aja as an album does not disappoint they are phenomenal
Aja is one of those albums you cue up and let it play. So great.
black cow: Combine 1/2 cup of evaporated milk with 2 cups of root beer and 2 ounces bourbon. Mix then split between two tall cocktail glasses. Add ice to fill the glass. Drizzle chocolate sauce on the top.
with great bands, sometimes you hear their hits so much you don't really play them no more, like stairway...but I never got tired of this song for some reason, it's like the breeze by skynard...it just never gets old for me
You hear funk, R&B and pop. This is called fusion.
This song never gets old.
Award winning album for the technical parts of the recording. Every Dan album is history. History tells us so!
Steely Dan sounds like late night in a big city
Have always loved this song! Steely Dan is the best!😍
Steely Dan is every other band's Favorite Band..
also
a "black cow" is an amazing drink.. go order ya one..
YW
Yep been sampled quite a bit..... you guys should check out some more Dan for sure, they are masters of arrangement and smooth vibes but funky too... great reaction thanks!
The Eagles and Steely Dan had a big beef. Steely Dan did not favor the Eagles because they made top hits. Now, the Eagles countered, stating that Steely Dan could never have hits, since their music was too jazzy. Aja dropped w/ many top jazz musicians.
Rudy's is an actual bar in NYC, near DF's apartment. Been around since at least the 1950's. Inside is an enlarged photo of Frank Sinatra in the bar.

2 Tbsp. chocolate syrup.
1 c. coca-cola.
1 Tbsp. cream.
1 scoop. chocolate ice cream.
This entire album has been highly sampled by Hip Hop artists. There’s a video on RUclips about it.
Check out Michael Franks Art of Tea album. Like Steely Dan, he is a great composer and lyricist who brought together the right musicians. Start with Night Moves. Sorry I can't pay but you won't regret it.
The late great jazz pianist Ahmed Jamal had a excellent rendition of this song some years ago.
Yes it is a real drink!!! Have y’all ever heard their song deacon blue? It’s really nice!
They were just soooo good. They had so many great songs. Love Steely Dan
You got it when you talked about how you liked how it's put together. The album Aja won a grammy in 1978 for the best engineered album. It had over 40 different musicians playing on it from many different genres, with many of them jazz musicians.
As sampled by Lord Tariq-Peter Gunz. , MF DOOM
Love Steely Dan. If you haven’t already do Kid Charlemagne and Don’t Take Me Alive next.
Others can sample this as much as they want but they still didn't write it, nor could they. Only Steely Dan. Cheers!
Asia and BJ listen to Steely Dan sing Kid Charlemagne and try to figure out who sampled this song
The album Aja which was released in 1977 (I was 10) is one of the absolutely greatest records that has ever been recorded. there is not a bad song on this record. Still play this often...
Black cow is a drink Coffee liquer, milk and coke served over ice
As the saying goes, Steely Dan is your favorite band's favorite band!
It’s sampled in gas drawls by mf doom i knew i recognised it I had to search for the right song
First cut of the lp. You really should listen to Aja all the way through. Classic and classy.
Or as my mother used to sing "Take your big black cow, and get outta here".😄
