    Did you know that hundreds of inmates took the Scottish government to the European court over “sloping out”? The practice was deemed a breach of their human rights and compensation was paid. I’m unsure of the year, maybe late 90s or early 2000s. Cash compensation of various amounts was paid into accounts of serving prisoners to enjoy on release. Typical award was £500-£700 per month they had to endure it.
    The same cells are still in use to this day, all with a very unprivate toilet.

    One of the things that makes barlinnie a lot worse than other jail's in UK is that's it's 23 hour lockup. It's monotonous being locked up in a cell 23 hours a day and some days it's 24 hours if the guards can't be bothered giving you the hour exercise that you are entitled to. Also the fact it's an old Victorian jail that used to do executions etc gives it a creepy vibe. Overcrowding is rampant and you can end up sharing a cell with a psycho.

    • @SuperKarinaG
      @SuperKarinaG 4 года назад +4

      That's just not true. Unless you are talking about years ago. All the guys go to education, out to play football, the sheds to work on the bikes and make stuff. Aye a lot of the suicide risks, escape risks and those on protection are dubbed up 23 hours a day

      Kar fc, thats true. Becouse every one i knew that was in barlinnie had to work. Maybe except guys that were only doing 7 to 14 days. But most guys doing a long sentence had to work. My mate was working on the garden work party in bar-l about 9 years ago and he said it was like a fucking golf course, it was huge lol.

      Karfc, thats true. All the long term prisoners i knew had to work in bar. But i thinck if you were doing 7 to 14 days to 28 days you were locked up 23 hours a day. And the screws made you work. Its a hard big jail and no doubt!

      @@SuperKarinaG It is true because ive been in it and experienced it and the fact you think its not true tells me you havent so stop talking like you know what your on about, listening to stories passing it on as fact. Everyone doest need to work theres not enough jobs for everyone to works theres over a thousand prisoners, do you think theres that many jobs inside a prison, also not everyone goes to education etc because like i said theres over a thousand prisoners, the guys who work in gardens or cooks etc used to be housed in letham hall
      and have different priveledges to guys in a,b,c hall, 12 year ago since i was last place.

    The year 2000 while I was just beginning a four stretch , very first afence, was 4/5 doors down landing (E hall 3rd flat) from carri. Me and him got on quite well and carried would have down what he could to help me out. Carri had just started a 9 stretch but you could tell he was familiar with the ins and outs of the system, he was very switched on. Carri actually put a good word in so I could landing pass job and all he wanted in return was to make sure I got him the best shirts and trousers: shoes. I. Good deal I thought cause the passmen were always getting a certain amount of brand new clothing after kit change we new who wanted the new clothing. Apart from carri you always got a little snout some choco bars for the service. Carri always looked out for me cause I was the freshes of all meat. He did hold a level of respect but didn’t shout it from the chimneys. In summary carri was old school and I think the majority of merchandise. We both bought on the outdside came from possible. He took to me straight away, and I don’t think I would have got through the first six months with a different mind set. He ) carri) Once I got the pass job things changed over night. You just had to be very cautious. In summery Carri was/ is a top block . Other may disagree but I am sure giving face to face interview may uncover

      Screws were murdered in Northern Ireland during the troubles outside of the jail's. It will have happened here aswell but it's a cliche that they're just gonna hit an inmate for nowt. Commonly - they'll treat you like you treat them. Think about it - do you want punched with no warning, slashed, toilet buckets poured on you, etc, etc. That's the job they face. No doubt about corruption and sadists but mostly a co-operative prisoner will not get hassle. Just imo. That's why violence in jails is kept private and out of sight. The cons are the hardest cos they've got less.
