I remember a philosophy teacher telling me: only the good will matters. You can have any other virtue. You can be honest, creative, precise, organized, patient, charismatic, etc. Without good will, those things just make you all the more evil. This guy reminded me of that. He has many virtues, but only started wanting to be good very late. I’m glad he’s turning it around.

The 1st 80% of the interview is straight out pride in how many people he hurt and how he did it. Then he closes with the alleged remorse and the cautionary warning about not doing what he did.

I just finished watching a documentary by a famous British historian about how people could possibly have been caught up in the Nazi regime. The documentary seemed relevant to this. This historian pointed out that each and every one of us likes to imagine that if we had been present at some dark moment in history, we would have been the ones to stand up, think independently and rebel. And yet, almost no one (if anyone at all) did this at these times. If you have grown up with everyone around you--parents, mentors, peers, teachers, leaders--all thinking one way, it takes a very rare individual to have a conscience of his own. It seems that in a very significant way, we are all defined by the circumstances into which we are born. Whatever your folks tell you and raise you to think, that is what you will be for the rest of your life. Unless you are one out of a million. From what this guy says, it is no surprise at all that he became what he became. We can never excuse terrible crimes, but we can try to understand them.

I appreciate John telling his story as a cautionary tale, but it frightens me how many people will laud the likes of him, Mike Dowd etc as if they're heroes when in fact they inflicted pain and suffering on countless people and arguably have inflicted a net negative upon the world.
People like this are extremely charismatic and its easy to look at them as sort of antiheroes - flawed characters who are ultimately good people - but despite years in prison and a desire for redemption, you can't just ignore all the bad they have done throughout their lives.
An awareness of one's misdeeds does not behove society to forgive them. In my opinion, these are not people to respect or look up to, but nonetheless I value the stories being told.

I keep wondering why quality of life doesn´t factor in how these mob figures saw themselves as long as they were active criminals. Because what are the chances? You´ll get killed or seriously hurt, spend a sizeable part of your life in jail, have to constantly look over your shoulder, can´t trust anyone, are constantly on the run, etc... etc.... Very few mobsters managed to get old without this happening to them. And you know there´s no way out, because even if you quit on good terms there´ll be a contract on you regardless, because a quitter may cooperate with the FBI at some point.
Like Joseph Pistone wrote: The mob is driven by greed, and controlled by fear. Must be a miserable life, yet apparently this life still keeps sucking people in and I´m quite puzzled by this fact.

I was a military conscript right out of high school, during the ramp up of the Angolan Border War in the mid 1970's, spent the next ten years doing annual deployments, PTSD didn't exist in the common terminology, we had to deal with it on our own, still dealing after all these years. For all those who question whether this guy is the “real deal”, I will give you my opinion as a 67 year old guy who grew up in Ozone Park, within walking distance of where he said he grew up In Woodhaven. First of all, the locations he noted were very real, from The Dome in Forest Park (where all manner of drugs were sold), to the boxing at Battalion Hall in Rego Park, to the club on Metropolitan Avenue, to the Social Club in Ozone Park ( which was probably Gotti’s Bergen Rod & Gun Club on 101st Avenue). I also grew up around these guys and nothing he said surprised me. I know it sounds like he’s some guy out of a movie but, believe me, there were guys like him and you just stayed away from them unless you wanted in with them. Regarding whether guys like this feel bad when they gave a beating or worse to someone, they always seemed to rationalize that the guy had it coming because the victim was mixed up in “the life” somehow and wasn’t playing by the rules. I am not justifying that, but that seemed to be how they saw it. The reason some of you might think of the movie Goodfellas with this guy is that he was the kind of guy that would be in those crews and Henry Hill’s guys operated very close to where this guy was.

Incredible interview. Being a vet who joined the AF pre-9/11, and having to serve 6 years through what was going on in Afghanistan and Iraq at those times, our allies starting to turn their backs on us, seeing how much the world hated the United States, even our allies...was wholling shocking to me. My dad was a Marine, served through Panama and the first Gulf War...and I was proud to be American at that time. Dad was also first generation born in the States Sicilian, so lots of how John speaks and the stories he is telling, my dad told me those same stories with different characters from my family. We have a photo of my grandmother and her sister sitting at a table with Lucky at the Copa Cobana back in the day... wild times.
Anyway, I appreciate that he identified that vets would be a group he identified with to stay on his path of healing and growth. It's very hard, very un-manly in America for a man to say this out loud. We need more Johns, and less Donald's and Joe's.
