I may not explain it right but I used to gobble any dvd behind the scenes doc that I could find up but I haven't really enjoyed any post 2010..
Actual human skeletons being cheaper to get than fake ones is wild, more that the remains were actually for sale at all.
Chauncey said that the remains were bought from a medical and biological supply company, so they were probably donated to science and meant to be studied and/or researched. Instead, they were put on screen and God knows what happened to them afterwards. I think that was an awful choice and extremely disrespectful to the decedents and their loved ones. Imagine dying and donating your body, hoping you can help further science and medicine, only for your skeleton to be tossed into a pit of mud and fooled with for hours, and then probably thrown away after. I’d haunt the shit out of that set too!
Men Behind the Sun used medical cadavers for every death scene because it was cheaper than making fake limbs
It might be hard to digest, but great skeleton props are harder to find than a leftover corpse no one claimed. It shows how little support some people get that no one even bothers giving them a proper funeral.
Production Tales from Hell feels almost nostalgic. If this show was weather it would be cozy autumn.

For real, i remember not being able to stop grinning during the Horror Awards this year and the aftershow esc podcast ep they did.
I just heard of this channel somehow. It’s like RUclips was like “Hey, remember that video you made two years ago that nobody watched? Here’s a better version with like the same title card pic!”
To me, if all but one actor are saying Hooper directed them, and the one saying it wasn't him also claims to be a psychic, I'm inclined to believe the majority of actors.

Yeah, it's always bugged me that they kind of stole the credit from Tobe Hooper. I imagine it was people who loved Spielberg and were indifferent to Hooper, but it's pretty scummy. Hooper wound up not having great experiences in Hollywood, while Spielberg just raked in dough. It was really Lifeforce that doomed Tobe's career to low budget films, though, but Poltergeist, Invaders From Mars, Lifeforce, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 are all great films, even if they weren't received well at the time.
It should’ve been Tobe’s big break into Hollywood mainstream. Unfortunately it was the 80’s and people played up Spielberg’s involvement in anything and gave him all the credit on anything he had any involvement in that was decent.
Definitely agree that Tobe deserved more attention for this classic film

This packed so much info in so quickly while not being too fast paced to keep up with and actually absorb the information , feels much longer and more satisfying than 15 min videos generally do. Great writing made even better by a great host with a great voice
I agree. I was so engrossed i didnt realize we already were getting to the end. I do hope that future episodes keep this pacing, especially once we get into movies that were absolute trainwrecks from start to finish.
Tagging “PTFH” at the end doesn’t really stick out: The title should be something like “Production Tales From Hell: Poltergeist (1982): EP 1”.
Edit: Yeah this new title fits much better. Looking forward to what’s next. I’ll assume we’ll see a Halloween: Curse of Michael Myers (1995), Hellraiser: Bloodlines (1996), and Alien 3/4 eventually.

Poltergeist’s behind the scenes stories was so crazy cause you never would have imagined this to happen, but with Dominque’s death and heather’s death, the films mean so much more to fans

Hell even Family Guy at one point parody poltergeist as well. They even had it where Peter tearing his face off and it being Hank Hill's face underneath and the whole Indian burial ground plot.

I love this angle Dead Meat is going with -- great host, great production, and it's obvious this is something Dead Meat has been wanting to lean into a lot more. I know people come for the "Kill Counts," and undoubtedly, those will continue (unless the team really just wants to screw over their own channel), but I think these behind the scenes things are the future for the channel to really branch out.

The skeletons thing reminds me of the movie Lord of War where it was easier to be actual gun runners than rent/buy props. They bought thousands of actual guns and even some military vehicles and just resold them for a profit after filming. They worked with actual gun runners for the shots of tanks and gunships and had to alert the UN when they mobilized and lined them all up for the movie because it looked like an actual military deployment! lol
The production of that movie is absolutely insane, and fits the theme and storyline of the movie so well it’s kinda nuts.
So for anyone who likes that kinda stuff, definitely look into it because it’s pretty wild.
Also, for anyone who hasn’t seen it Lord of War is an amazing Nic Cage movie based on a true story of a Ukrainian immigrant from NY who becomes one of the worlds most prolific gun runner by just sorta… deciding to do it and being an incredible salesman. It’s a good movie and doesn’t hold back when it comes to the reality of warfare, and the fact that the main character is a terrible person. It’s kinda refreshing.

Chauncey has such a good voice for this. She's the perfect blend of factual and fun--leaning into dramatic where needed. I had to stop mid-watch because i was struck with the realization that she is a REALLY good choice for hostess here in this series. Thank you all for your work on this!!! Seeing how this is playing out, it feels like this can work out well to "re-Dead Meat-ify" the early stuff the channel covered, back before the Behind-the-Scenes/Production stuff was regularly being added to the videos.

I can sum up all the difference in opinions between the cast and crew on the director controversy:
Craig T. Nelson: "It was great because Steven wasn't around on set all that much, he was too busy prepping E.T. And then there was Tobe Hooper, who was wonderful to work with."
Oliver Robins: "Tobe Hooper was the only one who directed me."
Martin Casella: "Towards the end, Steven just wasn't in the picture anymore, he was too busy with E.T."
Everyone who has claimed Spielberg directed: "Oh yeah, Spielberg directed it, no doubt. Hooper was always there, talking to actors, making some creative choices, talking to Spielberg when Spielberg should be talking to me! (Hrumph >:(((), doing things out of my eyesight as I have a very specific role on the set, being a hippie freak - why can't he put on a nice tie and blazer every now and then? - but heck yeah I'm sure Spielberg directed it all, have you seen his house??? He said he'd give me a little piece of that pie, I just had to laugh at his jokes on set... oh yeah, the Spiel-meister is pretty funny!"

i have been waiting for this series since its announcement! i love the behind the scenes segments in kill counts, so a series focused on this history of horror production is just what i needed! chauncey, you are killing it!

Spielberg was the idea man (he created the story) and creator of more emotional scenes, while Tobe was doing the horror stuff. But both had done a phenomenal job and that is the only thing that is important.
It does make me wonder if, had this movie been released now (when the director's guild is less stringent about single directors getting sole credit and movie studios are less likely to bind directors from working on additional projects), Spielberg and Hooper would have simply shared director's credit. Perhaps, or perhaps. Either way, though, both deserve their fair credit for making this film the classic that it is.
@@scotthill7431 Director's guild is much more chill than writter's one with giving credit. I think that Spielberg would give the director credit to Tobe in either case. Or it could be done in a way: "Directed By Tobe Hooper. Co-directed By Steven Spielberg". But 20 years ago, Robert Rodriguez had done the same thing with Frank Miller and Tarantino and guild wasn't really happy with it (Robert quit the DGA).
@@nachosniewolnosci3147 Yeah, it's examples like that that I was thinking of when I said the DCG was a lot less chill back in the day. That, or how much crap they gave George Lucas for daring to put the credits at the end of Star Wars instead of the beginning (which led to the only reason why Spielberg didn't direct Return of the Jedi: since Lucas had quit and done all the Star Wars movies after as non-union, as a guild member Spielberg couldn't take the job).
Spielberg wrote it and so it carries his sentimental scenes, but if you look at a lot of the storyboards and even the script, the scenes lack a lot of the emotional fervor. For instance, the mother's most emotional scene - when they first talk to Carol Anne through the TV and she "goes through her" - is written and storyboarded to be a lot more focused on the scientists running around and treating the situation with skepticism. Through numerous scenes, Hooper seems to reinterpret the tone and tenor to make it more immediately emotional and visceral - which is his style. I don't think we should credit Spielberg for all the most emotional moments - especially when he wasn't on set as much as the entertainment rags of 1982 liked to claim.
@@Sallytheflounder Tobe made TCM2 - which I love. Yeah - I kinda forced the emotional scens = Spielberg thing, but there are a few scenes, in which we just replace Jerry Goldsmith's phenomenal score with Williams's work and we just get Spielberg movie. But yeah - I love Poltergeist BTS and especially the scenes of making scares. Have a nice day.

This was the first production tales from hell video i saw, not sure if there’s others i missed. Been watching James and Dead Meat for going on 6 years. I’ll say that Chauncey kicked ass, video was great. It did feel a little scripted, but overall this was put together very nicely. Can’t wait to see more from Ms. Robinson! Keep it up!

About Night Skies, Spielberg produced in 2000s show Taken about people abducted by aliens. It's a pretty damn good show. I recommend it.
Hooper directed the first episode, too, in a nice bit of "full circle" lore.

This show’s pretty cool, glad you guys made it! I’m happy to see you branching out more with other hosts and shows.
I kinda like to lean towards the Spielberg director theory, considering Tobe didn't even try before or since directing a movie with a similar style to Poltergeist, when he went mainstream Texas Chainsaw 2 and Lifeforce still had some of that Texas Chainsaw dirt. While Poltergeist feels way to similar to Jaws or Temple of Doom, where there are some shocking scenes, but a kid can still watch it.
Lifeforce has a similar "Cinemascope" sense of scale, not to mention Hooper directed an episode for Spielberg's two series AMAZING STORIES and TAKEN, and those are very "Spielberg flavored." Spielberg seems to have abandoned the "scope" lensing once he took up with Allen Daviau on all his films outside of the Indiana Jones films, and regardless of lensing, they all lack that cool and clinical distance that characterizes "Poltergeist"'s most chilling moments and that Hooper took forward in all his horror films (whereas Spielberg's later forays into horror proved mostly unscary, even disastrous, producing two other ghost stories: The Haunting (1999) and The Turning (2020)).
@Sallytheflounder Eh usually episode directors rely either on the episode script or showrunner (not to mention the short production and also the episode needs to fit into other people's episodes), so there is not much director personality a director can put into an episode. Also producing and directing are 2 completely different things. Not to mention he was only an executive producer (a well documented nothing burger position) for The Haunting, not to mention he was an uncredited one at that. Also he didn't really produce The Turning considering he is not credited in any shape or form, it started of as a passion project sure, but he wasn't really involved, he has no credit on it.
@@pond0479 Interestingly, in a case of history repeating itself, rumors and reports floated around on both The Haunting and The Turning, while they were filming, that Spielberg was "heavily involved" or on the set, and Jan De Bont even confirmed that for The Haunting. Not saying Spielberg is responsible for those films, but I do think there's something to say about Hooper's collaborative role throughout the development - and making - of Poltergeist.
As for the TV episodes, I think those go a long way in disabusing us of over-inflated ideas of "auteur theory." Hooper went in and directed solid episodes of Spielberg-fashioned shows - and his visual and stylistic imprint is not absent, either - and just because its applied to a feature length film doesn't mean his work and effort on all these projects mentioned is any lesser or more meaningful between them, simply for working under a "house style" (again, often modified by a strong personal style, which Hooper had).
