- Merchant Navy Class '35018 British India Line' puts on a superb climb over Grayrigg and Shap on the Cumbrian Mountain Express. The big southern class 8 ran between Carnforth and Carlisle well inside of even time at 61 mins and considering you have the long pull over Grayrigg and then the fearsome Shap this arguably the best run of the year over the northern hills of the West Coast Mainline. In this video we capture the Merchant Navy near the top of Grayrigg at Docker and then just after the Summit at Beckfoot. On board reports have the train topping Grayrigg at 57mph and Shap was taken at 47mph which indicates a breathtaking run for all concerned.
The return leg over the S&C was the polar opposite, the Bullied roar which was showcased on the outward run was replaced with the usual soft Bullied chatter that we're all used too, with a more 'run of the mill' ascent over the S&C on the return leg. We capture the action at Waitby Common near Kirkby Stephen and at Angerholme near Ais Gill. The final scene captures 35018 working well up Wilpshire Bank on latter stages of the steam section.
Its been nearly two months since we've filmed a mainline steam tour due to the heightened fire risk across the country though in the North West the risk has diminished unlike southern parts of the country which are still under restrictions. We can now look forward to a busy month in September, though fingers are still firmly crossed due to the lack of rain we're still not getting.
I hope you enjoy the video. Авто/Мото
Shap Summit was passed at 47.8 mph.
I really like traveling in this way. Thank you for giving me this opportunity! Salutations de France.
Wonderful sequences, and you cannot beat 3 cylinder reg, many thanks!
Excellent video & enjoy the steam locomotive sound with joy. Thank you.
Excellent video Liam and Phil. Great selection of locations capturing her performing well. Enjoyable watching. Kind regards C&A
I have seen that Merchant Navy Class 35018 and noted it down in my Train Spotting Book a long time ago now it was when younger and still in the UK
A motley collection of coaches !
Thanks for posting, I was on this trip and it was quite obvious we had done something special on the run up to grayrigg and shap. A very happy looking crew when we arrived at carlisle. Well done lads!
You're welcome, no doubt the Bullied still had plenty in reserve.
@@MarshSteamVideosTM By the sound of it, yes!
Great shots Liam and Phil , some display from the Merchant in the am run and that bloody cloud always hangs around at Docker Viaduct ☹️
Looking great
Fantastic footage, thank you
Excellent video, many thanks.
Great Video Liam & Phil ....Dave 🚂🚂🚂
I will hopefully be soon in your nation, and note some areas such as parts of southern England's Somerset have had good rains, enabling steam traction resumption on for instance West Somerset Railway, while others including I gather East Kent and East Anglia remain very dry, to which you allude. Looking at the UK Met Office, norain predicted for southern England in the next seven days, but let's hope God sends it down shortly thereafter.
The usual great footage with a pleasing performance from this loco (thankfully unassisted by a diesel) even if some locations repeat from earlier videos. Unavoidable.
Great shots from Angerholme, a spirited perfomance today from the west coast crew, cheers Steve .
Great locations!
Wonderful.
A very well done video, great locations and nice sound :)
Excellent which I have come to expect from your efforts. As you say the climb up to Aisgill was more the "shuffling "sandpaper " of the Bulleids as we used to say in the 80s re City of Wells !
Who said you can never hear a Bullied???
Record for steam mph over shap ? with perseved locomotives ? Duke of Gloucester? or Blue 🔵 Peter ??.
Brilliant photography as usual. A matter of preference of course but is that one hell of a good looking loco? Great to see them stretching their legs on the main line especially on the S&C. All the best. Mick.
My 2nd favourite class of locos after the mighty Duchesses
@@kenmcdowell5325 Mine to . Always thought that there were similarities in the two. Both looked the part, heavy and powerful. Shame there’s not a few Duchess’s around. We are very lucky with the Bullieds. All the best. Mick

Wouldn't it be great if they could get that caged beast the City of Birmingham out of the museum
👍
Brilliant film what's the record for a steam loco over shap
I believe its 71000 Duke Of Gloucester.
The video of the record run is listed below

@@MarshSteamVideosTM yes, l'm quite sure what could beat that by 71000. Possibly Blue Peter as the driver size is the same.
Must be using Welsh steam coal.
