- The Scottish West Highlands were expecting wild - dangerously wild - weather today. ScotRail however inflicted a serious speed restriction on ALL Scottish trains, even those running along the unaffected Solway Firth between Dumfries and Carlisle with a journey time extended by approximately 50%.
Avanti announced that none of their services would run north of Preston - although a few did seem to actually travel through to Glasgow - presumably very slowly. Trans-Pennine Express terminated their trains at Carlisle. Northern Rail tried to run a normal service on two of their three routes out of the Citadel. The third line features in this video.
The Midland Pullman was due to run from Slough to Fort William today as the first part of a three day trip - closure of the West Highland line meant the cancellation of the entire venture.
The Settle and Carlisle Circular ran from Loughborough to Appleby, returning via the London Road loop and Upperby yard, by-passing Carlisle station. All three specials were originally scheduled to be in Carlisle within a short period of time and I had hoped to film them from the air. Unfortunately, the wind (very audible at times in the video) made use of the drone impossible.
Loved the commentary and how you made the very best of what could have been a right miserable situation!!
Ah well - disasters always make for great movies - think "Titanic"! Joking apart, it's always more interesting when things go wrong than when everything runs smoothly. Best wishes.
A musical start to the day! Well captured
Not quite the London Philharmonic but what can one expect on Carlisle station in the middle of a storm?
Outstanding video Tim as always, what a day! It’s never dull is it! F says hi!
Thanks Kate. A big hello to Felix - we didn't see him in the video - but we certainly heard him!! Until the next time.
well done Tim ,always enjoy your vids as they show passengers as well as trains !
Can't have one without the other! Thanks Peter.
What a day up there I am glad you made it home OK. I knew nothing of this until this morning as I had missed the evening news yesterday. Good old BIL to the rescue She did a fine job bringing the train alone. The band will hopefully have a better day if they play there again.
Much of Scotland is still suffering - and likely to continue for some time to come. I see the Rest and be Thankful road is closed yet again - thank God I don't live in Argyll!
@@schoolshorts It does look bad up there with landslides and washouts calling for the helicopter having to rescue people Just glad it is not where you are and hoping it has not caused problems for my Aunt in Dyce. She has not called me today.
A very disruptive day well documented Tim. Nice to see Tesco, RHTT and the charter still running though. Best wishes, Jeff.
Thanks Jeff. The Midland Pullman's run from Slough to Fort William was cancelled - that would have added an attractive splash of colour had it turned up. Best wishes.
Thanks for posting Tim.
As ever, you're welcome Tony.
I went over to Glasgow to meet a friend for lunch. I did get there and back, but it took a long time!
The 35 miles between Dumfries and Carlisle were frustrating enough - I dread to think what a longer trip must have been like.
Watch a vid of BIL climbing Asigill, was doing a fine job under atrocious conditions, certainly a sand box day!
Good capture at Carlisle, 11 on the hook and no banksman, can’t ask more of her than that.
Thankyou for sharing, appreciate your efforts, keep ‘‘em coming 👍
She's a great powerful brute of a machine is BIL - why put a diesel on the rear unless to provide electricity for modern air-conditioned coaches?
RHTT to visit soon? Hopefully!!
Any day now, I would imagine.
Is that old buffer staggering about on the track safe to be there?
Spot on Tim. Steam, RHTT and a brass band, cant be bad!👍
Thanks David - bad days often produce good results!
Someone was off key… 🥸
Ah well - we weren't expecting the Halle Orchestra!
@@schoolshorts I assume you got home safely too… 👍🏴
@@macjim I did indeed, thank you.
